The effect of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) on Dirac fermions has recently been explored numerically on a honeycomb lattice, leading to precise quantitative values for the finite temperature and quantum critical points. In this paper, we use the unbiased determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method to study the Holstein model on a half-filled staggered-flux square lattice, and compare with the honeycomb lattice geometry, presenting results for a range of phonon frequencies $0.1 \leqslant ω\leqslant 2.0$. We find that the interactions give rise to charge-density wave (CDW) order, but only above a finite coupling strength $λ_{\rm crit}$. The transition temperature is evaluated and presented in a $T_c$-$λ$ phase diagram. An accompanying mean-field theory (MFT) calculation also predicts the existence of quantum phase transition (QPT), but at a substantially smaller coupling strength.
We derive the general continuum model for a bilayer system of staggered-flux square lattices, with arbitrary elastic deformation in each layer. Applying this general continuum model to the case where the two layers are rigidly rotated relative to each other by a small angle, we obtain the band structure of the twisted bilayer staggered-flux square lattice. We show that this band structure exhibits a "magic continuum" in the sense that an exponential reduction of the Dirac velocity and bandwidths occurs in a large parameter regime. We show that the continuum model of the twisted bilayer system …
Anyon usually exists as collective excitation of two dimensional electron gas subjected to strong magnetic field, carrying fractional charges and exotic statistical character beyond fermion and boson. Fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is the only experimental system showing solid evidence of anyon and a serial of fractional charges so far. Searching for new serial of fractional charges in FQHE or other physical system is still a challenge for both theoretical and experimental study. Here a topological fusion theory of propagating paths winding around a pair of fluxes is proposed to explore…
Spin ice presents a typical example of classical spin liquid, where conserved magnetic fluxes emerge from microscopic spin degrees of freedom. In this letter, we investigate the effect of perturbation by magnetic charge disorder in two-dimensional spin ice. To this aim, we develop a novel cluster update algorithm, which enables fast relaxation of magnetic charges. The efficient Monte Carlo calculation reveals a drastic change of spin structure factor as doping magnetic charges: the pinch point, characterizing the spin ice, is gradually replaced by a diffusive peak. We derive an analytical rela…
Since the discovery of charge disproportionation in the FeO$_2$ square-lattice compound Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$ by Mössbauer spectroscopy more than fifty years ago, the spatial ordering pattern of the disproportionated charges has remained "hidden" to conventional diffraction probes, despite numerous x-ray and neutron scattering studies. We have used neutron Larmor diffraction and Fe K-edge resonant x-ray scattering to demonstrate checkerboard charge order in the FeO$_2$ planes that vanishes at a sharp second-order phase transition upon heating above 332 K. Stacking disorder of the checkerboard patt…
Composites formed from charged particles and magnetic flux tubes, proposed by Wilczek, are one model for anyons - particles obeying fractional statistics. Here we propose a scheme for realizing charged flux tubes, in which a charged object with an intrinsic magnetic dipole moment is placed between two semi-infinite blocks of a high permeability ($μ_r$) material, and the images of the magnetic moment create an effective flux tube. We show that the scheme can lead to a realization of Wilczek's anyons, when a two-dimensional electron system, which exhibits the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE), …
We use an unbiased, continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method to address the possibility of a zero-temperature phase without charge-density-wave (CDW) order in the Holstein and, by extension, the Holstein-Hubbard model on the half-filled square lattice. In particular, we present results spanning the whole range of phonon frequencies, allowing us to use the well understood adiabatic and antiadiabatic limits as reference points. For all parameters considered, our data suggest that CDW correlations are stronger than pairing correlations even at very low temperatures. These findings are compatibl…
We report that a possible Z2 quantum spin liquid (QSL) can be observed in a new class of frustrated system: spinor bosons subject to a pi flux in a square lattice. We construct a new class of Ginsburg-Landau (GL) type of effective action to classify possible quantum or topological phases at any coupling strengths. It can be used to reproduce the frustrated SF with the 4 sublattice $ 90^{\circ} $ coplanar spin structure plus its excitations in the weak coupling limit and the FM Mott plus its excitations in the strong coupling limit achieved in our previous work. It also establishes deep and int…
In this work, we theoretically study the charge order and orbital magnetic properties of a new type of antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeGe. Based on first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have studied the electronic structures, Fermi-surface quantum fluctuations, as well as phonon properties of the antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeGe. We find that charge density wave emerges in such a system due to a subtle cooperation between electron-electron ($e$-$e$) interactions and electron-phonon couplings, which gives rise to an unusual scenario of interaction-triggered phono…
We study the dynamics of the massive Schwinger model on a lattice using exact diagonalization. When periodic boundary conditions are imposed, analytic arguments indicate that a non-zero electric flux in the initial state can "unwind" and decrease to a minimum value equal to minus its initial value, due to the effects of a pair of charges that repeatedly traverse the spatial circle. Our numerical results support the existence of this flux unwinding phenomenon, both for initial states containing a charged pair inserted by hand, and when the charges are produced by Schwinger pair production. We a…
We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions on a square lattice with nearest-neighbor interaction, using the recently developed projective truncation approximation in Green's function equation of motion. For attractive interaction, the ground state is in an homogeneous p + ip superconducting (SC) phase at high or low electron densities. Near half filling is a phase separation (PS) between the SC phases. Allowing inhomogeneous solution, we obtain p-wave SC domains with positive interface energy. As temperature increases, the SC phases transit into normal phases above Tsc, generating a…
