Usually complex charge ordering phenomena arise due to competing interactions. We have studied how such ordered patterns emerge from the frustration of a long-ranged interaction on a lattice. Using the lattice gas model on a square lattice with fixed particle density, we have identified several interesting phases; such as a generalization of Wigner crystals at low particle densities and stripe phases at densities in between rho = 1/3 and rho = 1/2. These stripes act as domain walls in the checkerboard phase present at half-filling. The phases are characterised at zero temperatures using numerical simulations, and mean field theory is used to construct a finite temperature phase diagram.
Many classical, geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets have macroscopically degenerate ground states. In a class of three-dimensional systems, the set of degenerate ground states has power-law correlations and is an example of a Coulomb phase. We investigate Neel ordering from such a Coulomb phase, induced by weak additional interactions that lift the degeneracy. We show that the critical point belongs to a universality class that is different from the one for the equivalent transition out of the paramagnetic phase, and that it is characterised by effective long-range interactions; alternat…
We report two phenomena, induced by dynamical correlations, that occur during the free cooling of a two-dimensional mixture of inelastic hard disks. First, we show that, due to the onset of velocity correlations, the ratio of the kinetic energies associated with the two species changes from the value corresponding to the homogeneous cooling state to a value approximately given by the mass ratio m_1/m_2 of the two species. Second, we report a novel segregation effect that occurs in the late stage of cooling, where interconnected domains appear. Spectral analysis of the composition field reveals…
A model for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice with exchange and dipole-dipole interactions is studied via mean-field theory. In treating the dipoles by use of the Ewald method, a soft (critical) mode with a unique ordering wave vector is selected for all strengths of the dipole-dipole coupling. For weak dipoles a partially ordered, three sublattice spin structure (P state), with q_{ord}= (1/2 1/2 1/2), is selected. A fully ordered, four sublattice spin structure (F state), with q = (000), competes with the P state and becomes the stable structure as the temperature is reduce…
In many growth processes particles are highly mobile in an active layer at the surface, but are relatively immobile once incorporated in the bulk. We study models in which atoms are allowed to interact, equilibrate, and order on the surface, but are frozen in the bulk. Order parameter correlations in the resulting bulk material are highly anisotropic, reflecting its growth history. In a flat (layer by layer) growth mode, correlations perpendicular to the growth direction are similar to a two dimensional system in equilibrium, while parallel correlations reflect the dynamics of such a system. W…
We study an experimental system of hard granular squares in two dimensions, energized by vibration. The interplay of order in the orientations and positions of anisotropic particles allows for a rich set of phases. We measure the structure and dynamics of steady states as a function of particle density. This allows us to identify a progression of phases in which a low density isotropic fluid gives way to a phase with tetratic orientational order, short-range translational correlations, and slowed rotational dynamics. In this range of density we also observe a coupling between the molecular ori…
We investigate the critical properties of the phase transition towards complex tensor order that has been proposed to occur in spin-orbit coupled superconductors. For this purpose we formulate the bosonic field theory for fluctuations of the complex irreducible second-rank tensor order parameter close to the transition. We then determine the scale dependence of the couplings of the theory by means of the perturbative Renormalization Group (RG). For the isotropic system we generically detect a fluctuation-induced first-order phase transition. The initial values for the running couplings are det…
We predict that an external field can induce a spin order in highly frustrated classical Heisenberg magnets. We find analytically stabilization of collinear states by thermal fluctuations at a one-third of the saturation field for kagome and garnet lattices and at a half of the saturation field for pyrochlore and frustrated square lattices. This effect is studied numerically for the frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations for classical spins and by exact diagonalization for $S=1/2$. The field induced collinear states have a spin gap and produce magnetization platea…
Motivated by recent realizations of Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ spin ice thin films, and more generally by the physics of confined gauge fields, we study a model of spin ice thin film with surfaces perpendicular to the $[001]$ cubic axis. The resulting open boundaries make half of the bonds on the interfaces inequivalent. By tuning the strength of these inequivalent "orphan" bonds, dipolar interactions induce a surface ordering equivalent to a two-dimensional crystallization of magnetic surface charges. This surface ordering can also be expected on the surfaces of bulk …
According to empirical observations, some pattern formation phenomena in driven many-particle systems are more pronounced in the presence of a certain noise level. We investigate this phenomenon of fluctuation-driven ordering with a cellular automaton model of interactive motion in space and find an optimal noise strength, while order breaks down at high(er) fluctuation levels. Additionally, we discuss the phenomenon of noise- and drift-induced self-organization in systems that would show disorder in the absence of fluctuations. In the future, related studies may have applications to the contr…
The transition from n = 0 to n = 2 is revealed where n is the number of components of ordering field. The critical exponents are estimated. In frameworks of scaling theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena the results obtained are in a good agreement with experimental and theoretical data.
We study the interplay between surface roughening and phase separation during the growth of binary films. Already in 1+1 dimension, we find a variety of different scaling behaviors depending on how the two phenomena are coupled. In the most interesting case, related to the advection of a passive scalar in a velocity field, nontrivial scaling exponents are obtained in simulations.
The short-range correlations are considered for a two-dimensional hard-core boson model on square lattice within Bethe approximation for the clusters consisting of two and four sites. Explicit equations are derived for the critical temperatures of charge and superfluid ordering and their solutions are considered for various ratios of the charge-charge correlation parameter to the transfer integral. It is shown that taking into account short-range correlations for the temperatures of charge ordering results in the appearance of the critical concentration of bosons, which restricts the existence…
We study critical and magnetic properties of a bilayer Ising system consisting of two triangular planes A and B, with the antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling $J_{\rm A}$ and the ferromagnetic (FM) one $J_{\rm B}$ for the respective layers, which are coupled by the interlayer interaction $J_{\rm AB}$ by using Monte Carlo simulations. When $J_{\rm A}$ and $J_{\rm B}$ are of the same order, the unfrustrated FM plane orders first at a high temperature $T_{c1} \sim J_{\rm B}$. The spontaneous FM order then exerts influence on the other frustrated AF plane as an effective magnetic field, which subsequen…
Experimental observations of animal collective behavior have shown stunning evidence for the emergence of large-scale cooperative phenomena resembling phase transitions in physical systems. Indeed, quantitative studies have found scale-free correlations and critical behavior consistent with the occurrence of continuous, second-order phase transitions. The Standard Vicsek Model (SVM), a minimal model of self-propelled particles in which their tendency to align with each other competes with perturbations controlled by a noise term, appears to capture the essential ingredients of critical flockin…
We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the driven phases of particles such as vortices or colloids moving over a decagonal quasiperiodic substrate. In the regime where the pinned states have quasicrystalline ordering, the driven phases can order into moving square or smectic states, or into states with aligned rows of both square and triangular tiling which we term dynamically induced Archimedean-like tiling. We show that when the angle of the drive is varied with respect to the substrate, directional locking effects occur where the particle motion locks to certain angles. It is at the…
To determine the universality class of critical phenomena, we propose a method of statistical inference in the scaling analysis of critical phenomena. The method is based on Bayesian statistics, most specifically, the Gaussian process regression. It assumes only the smoothness of a scaling function, and it does not need a form. We demonstrate this method for the finite-size scaling analysis of the Ising models on square and triangular lattices. Near the critical point, the method is comparable in accuracy to the least-square method. In addition, it works well for data to which we cannot apply …
We study the coordination game with an aspiration-driven update rule in regular graphs and scale-free networks. We prove that the model coincides exactly with the Ising model and shows a phase transition at the critical selection noise when the aspiration level is zero. It is found that the critical selection noise decreases with clustering in random regular graphs. With a non-zero aspiration level, the model also exhibits a phase transition as long as the aspiration level is smaller than the degree of graphs. We also show that the critical exponents are independent of clustering and aspiratio…
We study numerically the ordering kinetics in a two-dimensional Ising model with random coupling where the fraction of antiferromagnetic links $a$ can be gradually tuned. We show that, upon increasing such fraction, the behavior changes in a radical way. Small $a$ does not prevent the system from a complete ordering, but this occurs in an extremely (logarithmically) slow manner. However, larger values of this parameter destroy complete ordering, due to frustration, and the evolution is comparatively faster (algebraic). Our study shows a precise correspondence between the kind of developing ord…
We study the relaxation of a 2D ultracold Bose-gas from a nonequilibrium initial state containing vortex excitations in experimentally realizable square and rectangular traps. We show that the subsystem of vortex gas excitations results in the spontaneous emergence of a coherent superfluid flow with a non-zero coarse-grained vorticity field. The streamfunction of this emergent quasi-classical 2D flow is governed by a Boltzmann-Poisson equation. This equation reveals that maximum entropy states of a neutral vortex gas that describe the spectral condensation of energy can be classified into type…
We study the effect of spin anisotropies on a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet using the J_1-J_2^{XXZ} model on the square lattice. The T=0 and finite-T phase diagrams of this model are obtained utilizing spin-wave theory, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo. We find that anisotropic frustration tends to stabilize XY- and Ising-like ordered phases, while the disordered spin-liquid phase is restricted to a small region of the phase diagram. The ordered phases are separated by first-order transitions and exhibit a non-trivial reentrance phenomenon.

Self-organization of moving objects in hydrodynamic environments has recently attracted considerable attention in connection to natural phenomena and living systems. However, the underlying physical mechanism is much less clear due to the intrinsically nonequilibrium nature, compared with self-organization of thermal systems. Hydrodynamic interactions are believed to play a crucial role in such phenomena. To elucidate the fundamental physical nature of many-body hydrodynamic interactions at a finite Reynolds number, here we study a system of co-rotating hard disks in a two-dimensional viscous …
There are at least three fundamental states of matter, depending upon temperature and pressure: gas, liquid, and solid (crystal). These states are separated by first-order phase transitions between them. In both gas and liquid phases the complete translational and rotational symmetry exist, whereas in a solid phase both symmetries are broken. In intermediate phases between liquid and solid, which include liquid crystal and plastic crystal phases, only one of the two symmetries is preserved. Among the fundamental states of matter, the liquid state is most poorly understood. We argue that it is …
The origin of the non commutativity of the limits $t \to \infty$ and $N \to \infty$ in the dynamics of first order transitions is investigated. In the large-N model, i.e. $N \to \infty$ taken first, the low temperature phase is characterized by condensation of the large wave length fluctuations rather than by genuine phase-ordering as when $t \to \infty$ is taken first. A detailed study of the scaling properties of the structure factor in the large-N model is carried out for quenches above, at and below T_c. Preasymptotic scaling is found and crossover phenomena are related to the existence of…
We argue that a system of straight rigid rods of length k on square lattice with only hard-core interactions shows two phase transitions as a function of density, rho, for k >= 7. The system undergoes a phase transition from the low-density disordered phase to a nematic phase as rho is increased from 0, at rho = rho_c1, and then again undergoes a reentrant phase transition from the nematic phase to a disordered phase at rho = rho_c2 < 1.
We present a new microscopic model of granular medium to study the role of dynamical correlations and the onset of spatial order induced by the inelasticity of the interactions. In spite of its simplicity, it features several different aspects of the rich phenomenology observed in granular materials and allows to make contact with other topics of statistical mechanics such as diffusion processes, domain growth, persistence, aging phenomena. Interestingly, while local observables being controlled by the largest wavelength fluctuations seem to suggest a purely diffusive behavior, the formation o…
Following quenches of initial configurations having long range spatial correlations, prepared at the demixing critical point, to points inside the miscibility gap, we study aging phenomena in solid binary mixtures. Results on the decay of the two-time order-parameter autocorrelation functions, obtained from Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Ising model, with Kawasaki exchange kinetics, are analyzed via state-of-the art methods. The outcome is compared with that obtained for the ordering in uniaxial ferromagnets. For the latter, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations of the same…
We study phase segregation in a model alloy undergoing both ordering and decomposition, using computer simulations of Kawasaki exchange dynamics on a square lattice. Following a quench into the miscibility gap we observe an early stage in which ordering develops while the composition remains almost uniform. Then decomposition starts with segregation into ordered and disordered phases. The two spherically averaged structure functions, related to decomposition and to ordering, were both observed to obey scaling rules in the late coarsening stage where the time increase of the characteristic leng…
We have studied the ordering of the q-colours Potts model in two dimensions on a square lattice. On the basis of our observations we propose that if q is large enough the system is not able to break global and local null magnetisation symmetries at zero temperature: when q<4 the system forms domains with a size proportional to the system size while for q>4 it relaxes towards a non-equilibrium phase with energy larger than the ground state energy, in agreement with the previous findings of De Oliveira et al. (M. J. de Oliveira, A. Petri, T. Tome, Europhys. Lett., 65, 20 (2004)).
We study the influence of the surface orientation on the wetting behavior of bcc binary alloys, using a semi-infinite lattice model equivalent to a nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnet in an external field. The salient feature of the model is the generation of an ``effective'' ordering surface field for symmetry-breaking surface orientations like (100). Such a field couples to the local order parameter at the surface and leads to the occurrence of wetting phenomena below the critical temperature T_c. Utilizing a Ginzburg-Landau continuum model which has been derived earlier from the lattice …
The dynamics of the 2D Potts ferromagnet when quenched below the transition temperature is investigated in the case of discontinuous phase transition, which is interesting for understandingthe non equilibrium dynamics of systems with many competing equivalent low temperature phases, that appears to be not much explored. After briefly reviewing some recent findings, we focus on the numerical study of quenches just below the transition temperature on square lattices. We show that, up to a certain time, metastable states can be observed for which energy stays constant above the equilibrium energy…
Two information entropies, $S_{IB}$ based on the local bonding energy configurations and $S_{IS}$ based on the local spin configurations, are applied in the square-lattice $\pm {J}$ Ising systems with Monte Carlo simulations. With $S_{IB}$ and $S_{IS}$, the spin glass states can be distinguished from paramagnetic states clearly. The results reveal that the nature of spin glass states is of ordering in bonding energy and disordering in spin orientations. The consistence of $S_{IB}$ and the thermodynamic entropy is found.
