In state of the art photoinjector electron sources, thermal emittance from photoemission dominates the final injector emittance. Therefore, low thermal emittance cathode developments and diagnostics are very important. Conventional thermal emittance measurements for the high gradient gun are time-consuming and thus thermal emittance is not measured as frequently as quantum efficiency during the lifetime of photocathodes, although both are important properties for the photoinjector optimizations. In this paper, a single shot measurement of photoemission transverse momentum, i.e., thermal emittance per rms laser spot size, is proposed for photocathode RF guns. By tuning the gun solenoid focusing, the electrons transverse momenta at the cathode are imaged to a downstream screen, which enables a single shot measurement of both the rms value and the detailed spectra of the photoelectrons transverse momenta. Both simulations and proof of principle experiments are reported.
We present the results of transverse emittance and longitudinal current profile measurements of high bunch charge (greater than or equal to 100 pC) beams produced in the DC gun-based Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector. In particular, we show that the cathode thermal and core beam emittances dominate the final 95% and core emittance measured at 9-9.5 MeV. Additionally, we demonstrate excellent agreement between optimized 3D space charge simulations and measurement, and show that the quality of the transverse laser distribution limits the optimal simulated and measured emittances. These…
Thermal emittance and quantum efficiency (QE) are key figures of merit of photocathodes, and their uniformity is critical to high-performance photoinjectors. Several QE mapping technologies have been successfully developed; however, there is still a dearth of information on thermal emittance maps. This is because of the extremely time-consuming procedure to gather measurements by scanning a small beam across the cathode with fine steps. To simplify the mapping procedure, and to reduce the time required to take measurements, we propose a new method that requires only a single scan of the soleno…
Since the discovery of electrons more than a century ago, the generation, transport and characterization of electron beams has been an active field of research. Breakthroughs in this field have led to applications as far reaching as cancer treatment, investigation of nanoscale material and dark matter. In this book, we present a snapshot of the photoinjector technology which has contributed to these advances by providing an introduction to the basic theory and engineering of state-of-the-art electron beam sources. Photoinjectors produce relativistic electrons for exciting new devices such as x…
Reducing the intrinsic emittance of photocathodes is one of the most promising routes to improving the brightness of electron sources. However, when emittance growth occurs during beam transport (for example, due to space-charge), it is possible that this emittance growth overwhelms the contribution of the photocathode and, thus, in this case source emittance improvements are not beneficial. Using multi-objective genetic optimization, we investigate the role intrinsic emittance plays in determining the final emittance of several space-charge dominated photoinjectors, including those for high r…
Photoinjectors are the main high brightness electron sources for X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL). Photoinjector emittance reduction is one of the key knobs for improving XFEL lasing, so precise emittance measurement is critical. It's well known that rms emittance is very sensitive to low intensity tails of particle distributions in the phase space, whose measurement depend on the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and image processing procedures. Such sensitivities make the interpretations of beam transverse brightness challenging, leading to different emittance definitions to reduce the impact of …
Since the introduction of the radio-frequency (rf) photoinjector electron source over thirty years ago, peak performance demands have dictated the use of high accelerating electric fields. With recent strong advances in obtainable field values, attendant increases in beam brightness are expected to be dramatic. In this article, we examine the implementation of very high gradient acceleration in a high frequency, cryogenic rf photoinjector. We discuss in detail the effects of introducing, through an optimized rf cavity shape, rich spatial harmonic content in the accelerating modes in this devic…
SHINE, as the first hard x-ray free-electron-laser (FEL) facility in China, is designed to provide high-brightness FEL lasing under high-repetition-rate operation mode. In order to drive x-ray FEL pulses with high qualities, the photoinjector section is deployed to provide the specified electron beam with low transverse emittance and high brightness. Normally the multi-objective optimization algorithm is employed in the injector beam dynamics design. In this paper, the many-objective optimization algorithm NSGA-III is introduced to the injector physical design for optimizing the 4 beam quality…
To make full use of photocathode material and improve its quantum efficiency lifetime, it can be necessary to operate laser away from the cathode center in photoinjectors. In RF guns, the off-axis emitted beam will see a time-dependent RF effect, which would generate a significant growth in transverse emittance. It has been demonstrated that such an emittance growth can be almost completely compensated by orienting the beam on a proper orbit in the downstream RF cavities along the injector. In this paper we analyze in detail the simulation techniques used in reference[1] and the issues associa…
In this paper, we propose a masked photocathode inside a photoinjector for generating high brightness electron beam. Instead of mounting the photocathode onto an electrode, an electrode with small hole is used as a mask to shield the photocathode from the accelerating vacuum chamber. Using such a masked photocathode will make the replacement of photocathode material easy by rotating the photocathode behind the electrode into the hole. Furthermore, this helps reduce the dark current or secondary electron emission from the photocathode material. The masked photocathode also provides transverse c…
Next generation accelerators will require a high current, low emittance beam with a low energy spread. Such accelerators will employ advanced beam conditioning systems such as emittance exchangers to manipulate high brightness beams. One of the goals of the Fermilab A0 photoinjector is to investigate the transverse to longitudinal emittance exchange principle. Coherent synchrotron radiation could limit high current operation of the emittance exchanger. In this paper, we report on the preliminary experimental and simulation study of the coherent synchroton radiation (CSR) in the emittance excha…
Photoinjectors are widely used for linear accelerators as electron sources to generate high-brightness electron beam. Drive laser, which determines the timing structure and quality of the electron beam, is a crucial device of photoinjector. A new drive laser system has been designed and constructed for the upgraded 3.5-cell DC-SRF photoinjector at Peking University. The drive laser system consists of a 1064 nm laser oscillator, a four- stage amplifier, the second and fourth harmonic generators, the optical system to transfer the UV pulses to the photocathode, and the synchronization system. Over the last years, the generation and acceleration of ultra-short, high quality electron beams has attracted more and more interest in accelerator science. Electron bunches with these properties are necessary to operate and test novel diagnostics and advanced high gradient accelerating schemes such as plasma accelerators or dielectric laser accelerators. Furthermore, several medical and industrial applications require high-brightness electron beams. The dedicated R&D facility ARES at DESY will provide such probe beams in the upcoming years. After the setup of the normal-conducting RF photoin…
Recent studies of the performance of radio-frequency (RF) copper cavities operated at cryogenic temperatures have shown a dramatic increase in the maximum achievable surface electric field. We propose to exploit this development to enable a new generation of photoinjectors operated at cryogenic temperatures that may attain, through enhancement of the launch field at the photocathode, a significant increase in five-dimensional electron beam brightness. We present detailed studies of the beam dynamics associated with such a system, by examining an S-band photoinjector operated at 250 MV/m peak e…
The recent achievements in the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) photoinjectors have opened a new era in the development of the reliable high-brightness CW electron sources. While the SRF guns become one of the most promising technologies, the compatibility of SRF environment with the complex photocathodes remains on the forefront of the modern accelerator science. The SRF cavities operate at cryogenic temperatures providing the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment highly beneficial for the photocathode performance. However, the necessity to keep the photocathodes at room temperature whil…
The beam parameters of complete prototype of the bERLinPro injector that consisted of a lead cathode in an 1.6 cell superconducting cavity were measured. The measurements are discussed in chapter 2 and indicate that the beam emittance is governed by a multitude of contributions from the cathode and the injector. Cathodes for practical use must have a high enough QE to deliver the required current at moderate illumination intensities and be able to sustain the operation for several days. Alkali antimonides are good candidates for this purpose, as discussed in chapter 3.2. The preparation of suc…
Recent investigations of RF copper structures operated at cryogenic temperatures performed by a SLAC-UCLA collaboration have shown a dramatic increase in the maximum surface electric field, to 500 MV/m. We examine use of these fields to enable very high field cryogenic photoinjectors that can attain over an order of magnitude increase in peak electron beam brightness. We present beam dynamics studies relevant to X-ray FEL injectors, using start-to-end simulations that show the high brightness and low emittance of this source enables operation of a compact FEL reaching a photon energy of 80 keV…

Ultralow emittance ($\leq20$ nm, normalized) electron beams with $10^5$ electrons per bunch are obtained by tightly focusing an ultrafast ($\sim$ 100 fs) laser pulse on the cathode of a 1.6 cell radiofrequency photoinjector. Taking advantage of the small initial longitudinal emittance, a downstream velocity bunching cavity is used to compress the beam to $<10$ fs rms bunch length. The measurement is performed using a thick high voltage deflecting cavity which is shown to be well-suited to measure ultrashort durations of bunching beams, provided that the beam reaches a ballistic longitudinal fo…
A comparison of the two most prominent electron sources of high average current high brightness electron beams, DC and superconducting RF photoemission guns, is carried out using a large-scale multivariate genetic optimizer interfaced with space charge simulation codes. The gun geometry for each case is varied concurrently with laser pulse shape and parameters of the downstream beamline elements of the photoinjector to obtain minimum emittance as a function of bunch charge. Realistic constraints are imposed on maximum field values for the two gun types. The SRF and DC gun emittances and beam e…
Field emitted electrons can seriously affect the operation of high-field, high-duty factor electron accelerators. Accelerated field emission can result in high average power beams which can radiation damage beamline components. In addition, localized losses generate thermal hot spots whose outgassing degrades the ultra-high vacuum required in photoinjectors and cryomodules. However, despite their importance, the effects of field emission are rarely included in the design and engineering of electron injectors. This work attempts to remedy this situation by combining two well-known and well-docu…
The operation of Ultrafast Electron Diffractometers (UEDs) and Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) relies on high-brightness electron beams produced by radio-frequency (RF) photocathode guns. The next generation of high-repetition rate UEDs and FELs requires electron beams with a high average brightness. To this end, we introduce a continuous wave RF photocathode gun at 325 MHz with an APEX-like geometry. The gun allows for the production of electron beams with very high both peak and average 5D brightness while having moderate RF power consumption. The gun is operated in blowout regime with an energy…
CW photoinjectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many areas of science and applications. They can establish the basis for a new generation of monochromatic X-ray free electron lasers, high brightness hadron beams, or a new generation of microchip production. In this letter we report on the record-performing superconducting RF electron gun with $\textrm{CsK}_{2}\textrm{Sb}$ photocathode. The gun is generating high charge electron bunches (up to 10 nC/bunch) and low transverse emittances, while operating for months with a single photocathode. This achievement o…
Large area carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes made from yarns, films or fibers have long been promising as next generation electron sources for high power radio frequency (rf) and microwave vacuum electronic devices. However, experimental evidence have been pointing out spatial incoherence of the electron beam produced by such cathodes that, in turn, impeded the progress toward high brightness CNT electron sources and their practical applications. Indeed, typically large area CNT fibers, films or textiles emit stochastically across their physical surface at large emission angles and with large tra…
We present the results of an experiment where a short focal length (~ 1.3 cm) permanent magnet electron lens is used to image micron-size features of a metal sample in a single shot, using an ultra- high brightness ps-long 4 MeV electron beam from a radiofrequency photoinjector. Magnifcation ratios in excess of 30x were obtained using a triplet of compact, small gap (3.5 mm), Halbach-style permanent magnet quadrupoles with nearly 600 T/m field gradients. These results pave the way to- wards single shot time-resolved electron microscopy and open new opportunities in the applications of high bri…
High-brightness electron sources are a key ingredient to the development of compact accelerator-based light sources. The electron sources are commonly based on (linear) photoemission process where a laser pulse with proper wavelength impinges on the surface of a metallic or semiconductor photocathode. Very recently, the use of plasmonic cathodes - cathodes with a nano-patterned surface - have demonstrated great enhancement in quantum efficiencies (Li et al., 2013 [1]). Alternatively, this type of photocathodes could support the formation of structured beams composed of transversely-separated b…
To meet requirements of high performance THz-FEL (Free Electron Laser), a compact scheme of FEL injector was proposed. Thermionic cathode was chosen to emit electrons instead of photo-cathode with complex structure and high cost. The effective bunch charge was improved to ~200pC by adopting enhanced EC-ITC (External Cathode Independently Tunable Cells) RF gun to extract micro-bunches, and back bombardment effects were almost eliminated as well. Constant gradient accelerator structures were designed to improve energy to ~14MeV, while focusing system was applied for emittance suppressing and bun…
We present a detailed study of the six-dimensional phase space of the electron beam produced by the Cornell Energy Recovery Linac Photoinjector, a high-brightness, high repetition rate (1.3 GHz) DC photoemission source designed to drive a hard x-ray energy recovery linac (ERL). A complete simulation model of the injector has been constructed, verified by measurement, and optimized. Both the horizontal and vertical 2D transverse phase spaces, as well as the time-resolved (sliced) horizontal phase space, were simulated and directly measured at the end of the injector for 19 pC and 77 pC bunches …
Producing high-brightness and high-charge (>100 pC) electron bunches at blowout regime requires ultrashort laser pulses with high fluence. The effects of laser pulse heating of the copper photocathode are analyzed in this paper. The electron and lattice temperature is calculated using an improved two-temperature model, and an extended Dowell-Schmerge model is employed to calculate the thermal emittance and quantum efficiency. A time-dependent growth of the thermal emittance and the quantum efficiency is observed. For a fixed amount of charge, the projected thermal emittance increases with decr…
Pushing the limits in temporal resolution for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) requires a revolutionary change in the electron source technology. In this paper we study the possibility of employing a radiofrequency photoinjector as the electron source for a time-resolved TEM. By raising the beam energy to the relativistic regime we minimize the space charge effects which otherwise limit the spatio-temporal resolution of the instrument. Analysis and optimization of the system taking into account the achievable beam brightness, electron flux on the sample, chromatic and spherical aberratio…
We determine the limit of the lowest achievable photoemitted electron temperature, and therefore the maximum achievable electron brightness, due to heating just after emission into vacuum, applicable to dense relativistic or nonrelativistic photoelectron beams. This heating is due to poorly screened Coulomb interactions equivalent to disorder induced heating seen in ultracold neutral plasmas. We first show that traditional analytic methods of Coulomb collisions fail for the calculation of this strongly coupled heating. Instead, we employ an N-body tree algorithm to compute the universal scalin…
High quantum yield, low transverse energy spread and prompt response time make GaAs activated to negative electron affnity, an ideal candidate for a photocathode in high brightness photoinjectors. Even after decades of investigation, the exact mechanism of electron emission from GaAs is not well understood. We show that a nanoscale surface roughness can affect the transverse electron spread from GaAs by nearly an order of magnitude and explain the seemingly controversial experimental results obtained so far. This model can also explain the measured dependence of transverse energy spread on the…
High current bright sources are needed to power the next generation of compact rf and microwave systems. A major requirement is that such a source could be sustainably operated at high frequencies, well above 1 GHz, and high gradients, well above 100 MV/m. Field emission sources offer simplicity and scalability in a high frequency era of the injector design, but the output rf cycle charge and high gradient operation remain a great and largely unaddressed challenge. Here, a field emission cathode based on ultra-nano-crystalline diamond or UNCD, an efficient planar field emission material, was t…
High-bunch-charge photoemission electron-sources operating in a continuous wave (CW) mode are required for many advanced applications of particle accelerators, such as electron coolers for hadron beams, electron-ion colliders, and free-electron lasers (FELs). Superconducting RF (SRF) has several advantages over other electron-gun technologies in CW mode as it offers higher acceleration rate and potentially can generate higher bunch charges and average beam currents. A 112 MHz SRF electron photoinjector (gun) was developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to produce high-brightness and h…
High brightness, high repetition rate electron beams are key components for optimizing the performance of next generation scientific instruments, such as MHz-class X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) and Ultra-fast Electron Diffraction/Microscopy (UED/UEM). In the Advanced Photo-injector EXperiment (APEX) at Berkeley Lab, a photoelectron gun based on a 185.7 MHz normal conducting re-entrant RF cavity, has been proven to be a feasible solution to provide high brightness, high repetition rate electron beam for both XFEL and UED/UEM. Based on the success of APEX, a new electron gun system, named APE…
Advances in electron beam technology have been central to creating the current generation of x-ray free electron lasers and ultra-fast electron microscopes. These once exotic devices have become essential tools for basic research and applied science. One important beam technology for both is the electron source which, for many of these instruments, is the photocathode gun. The invention of the photocathode gun and the concepts of emittance compensation and beam matching in the presence of space charge and RF forces have made these high-quality beams possible. Achieving even brighter beams requ…
