To meet requirements of high performance THz-FEL (Free Electron Laser), a compact scheme of FEL injector was proposed. Thermionic cathode was chosen to emit electrons instead of photo-cathode with complex structure and high cost. The effective bunch charge was improved to ~200pC by adopting enhanced EC-ITC (External Cathode Independently Tunable Cells) RF gun to extract micro-bunches, and back bombardment effects were almost eliminated as well. Constant gradient accelerator structures were designed to improve energy to ~14MeV, while focusing system was applied for emittance suppressing and bunch state maintenance. Physical design and beam dynamics of key components for FEL injector were analyzed. Furthermore, start-to-end simulations with multi-pulses were performed by using homemade MATLAB and Parmela. The results show that continual high brightness electron bunches with low energy spread and emittance could be obtained stably.
The control system of the 1.5 MeV FEL injector is built on the base of ported EPICS. It uses low-cost hardware: personal computers with the processor Intel x86 and CAMAC equipment produced by our institute. At present time, the distributed control system includes one Pentium at OPerator Interface (OPI) level and two IOC (Input Output Controllers) under supervision of the real time operating system LynxOS/x86 at the low-level. Each IOC is used for monitoring of autonomous parts of the injector. The first IOC operates the Radio Frequency (RF) system. The second IOC operates the injector equipmen…
Beam tail effect of multi-bunches will influence the electron beam performances in high intensity thermionic RF gun. Beam dynamic calculations that illustrate the working states of single and multi-pulse fed-in of performance-enhanced EC-ITC (External Cathode Independent Tunable Cavity) RF gun for FEL (Free Electron Laser) injector are performed to estimate extracted bunch properties. By using both Parmela and homemade MATLAB codes, the effects of single beam tail as well as interactions of multi-pulses are analyzed, where ring-based electron algorithm is adopted to calculated RF fields and sp…
Terahertz radiation has broad application prospect due to its ability to penetrate deep into many organic materials without damage caused by ionizing radiations. A FEL-based THz source is the best choice to produce high-power radiation. In this paper, a 14 MeV injector is introduced for generating high-quality beam for FEL, which is composed of an EC-ITC RF gun, compensating coils and a travelling-wave structure. Start-to-end simulation has been done with ASTRA code to verify the design and to optimize parameters. Simulation of operating mode at 6 MeV is also executed.
We present the anticipated performances of a multi-cell RF injector operated either with a thermoionic cathode or with a gated photo-cathode. By means of a magnetic compression and a Coherent Spontaneous Emission seeded FEL radiating at 100 to 200 mm, the system produces a beam fully bunched with a 200 A peak current at 2 mm.mrad rms emittance. The electron bunch is a few FEL buckets long and phase-locked to the RF so to make this device an ideal injector for second generation plasma acceleration experiments.
With the aim to obtain short-pulse bunches with high peak current for a terahertz radiation source, an EC-ITC (External-Cathode Independently Tunable Cells) RF gun was employed. As the external injecting electron source of the ITC RF gun, a gridded DC gun plays a key role, the performance of which determines the beam quality in the injector and transport line. In order to make the beam well compressed in the ITC RF gun, the energy of the electrons acquired from the gridded DC gun should be 15 KeV at most. A proper structure of the gridded gun is shown to overcome the strong space- charge force…
The use of existing linacs, and in particular light source injectors, for free-electron laser (FEL) experiments is becoming more common due to the desire to test FELs at ever shorter wavelengths. The high-brightness, high-current beams required by high-gain FELs impose technical specifications that most existing linacs were not designed to meet. Moreover, the need for specialized diagnostics, especially shot-to-shot data acquisition, demands substantial modification and upgrade of conventional linacs. Improvements have been made to the Advanced Photon Source (APS) injector linac in order to pr…
SHINE, as the first hard x-ray free-electron-laser (FEL) facility in China, is designed to provide high-brightness FEL lasing under high-repetition-rate operation mode. In order to drive x-ray FEL pulses with high qualities, the photoinjector section is deployed to provide the specified electron beam with low transverse emittance and high brightness. Normally the multi-objective optimization algorithm is employed in the injector beam dynamics design. In this paper, the many-objective optimization algorithm NSGA-III is introduced to the injector physical design for optimizing the 4 beam quality…
The energy recovery linac test facility (ERL-TF), a compact ERL-FEL (free electron laser) two-purpose machine, was proposed at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing. As one important component of the ERL-TF, the photo-injector started with a photocathode direct-current gun was designed and preliminarily optimized. In this paper an evolutionary genetic method, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, is applied to optimize the injector beam dynamics, especially in the high-charge operation mode. Study shows that using an incident laser with rms transverse size of 1~1.2 mm, the normal…
From 2005 through 2012, the Fermilab Main Injector provided intense beams of 120 GeV protons to produce neutrino beams and antiprotons. Hardware improvements in conjunction with improved diagnostics allowed the system to reach sustained operation at ~400 kW beam power. Transmission was very high except for beam lost at or near the 8 GeV injection energy where 95% beam transmission results in about 1.5 kW of beam loss. By minimizing and localizing loss, residual radiation levels fell while beam power was doubled. Lost beam was directed to either the collimation system or to the beam abort. Crit…
The interest in plasma-based accelerators as drivers of user facilities is growing worldwide thanks to its compactness and reduced costs. In this context the EuPRAXIA collaboration is preparing a conceptual design report for a multi-GeV plasma-based accelerator with outstanding electron beam quality to pilot, among several applications, the operation of an X-ray FEL, the most demanding in terms of beam brightness. Intense beam dynamics studies have been performed to provide a reliable working point for the RF injector to generate a high-brightness trailing witness bunch suitable in external in…
Studies of the electron beam dynamics for the 4GLS design are presented. 4GLS will provide three different electron bunch trains to a variety of user synchrotron sources. The 1 kHz XUV-FEL and 100 mA High Average Current branches share a common 540 MeV linac, whilst the 13 MHz IR-FEL must be well-synchronised to them. An overview of the injector designs, electron transport, and energy recovery is given, including ongoing studies of coherent synchrotron radiation, beam break-up and wakefields. This work is being pursued for the forthcoming Technical Design Report due in 2008.
In Free Electron Lasers (FEL), a transverse centroid misalignment of longitudinal slices in an electron bunch reduces the effective overlap between radiation field and electron bunch and therefore the FEL performance. The dominant sources of slice misalignments for FELs are the incoherent and coherent synchrotron radiation within bunch compressors as well as transverse wake fields in the accelerating cavities. This is of particular importance for over-compression which is required for one of the key operation modes for the SwissFEL planned at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The centroid shift is …
The formation of a double-horn current profile is a challenging issue in the achievement of electron bunch with high peak current, especially for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) where more nonlinear and intricate beam dynamics propagation is involved. Here, we propose to correct the nonlinear beam longitudinal phase space distortion in the photoinjector section with a dual-mode buncher. In combination with the evolutionary many-objective beam dynamics optimization, this method is shown to be effective in manipulating the longitudinal phase space at the injector exit. Fu…
It is well-known that the electron beam quality required for applications such as FELs and ultra-fast electron diffraction can be degraded by the asymmetric fields introduced by the RF couplers of superconducting linacs. This effect is especially troublesome in the injector where the low energy beam from the gun is captured into the first high gradient accelerator section. Unfortunately modifying the established cavity design is expensive and time consuming, especially considering that only one or two sections are needed for an injector. Instead, it is important to analyze the coupler fields t…

An S-band linear accelerator is the source of particles and the front end of the Advanced Photon Source injector. In addition, it supports a low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) and drives a free-electron laser (FEL). A waveguide-switching and distribution system is now under construction. The system configuration was revised to be consistent with the recent change to electron-only operation. There are now six modulator-klystron subsystems, two of which are being configured to act as hot spares for two S-band transmitters each, so that no single failure will prevent injector operation. The t…
LCLS-II is currently in its commissioning phase at SLAC. It is an X-ray FEL driven by a CW superconducting LINAC. The beam injector plays a crucial role in the overall performance of the accelerator, and is critical to the final electron beam performance parameters. The LCLS-II injector comprises of a 185.7 MHz VHF copper gun cavity, and a 1.3 GHz two-cell L-band copper buncher cavity. The FPGA-based controller employs feedback and Self-Excited Loop logic in order to regulate the cavity fields. It also features several other functionalities, such as live detune computation, active frequency tr…
For a planar FEL configuration we study stimulated coherent spontaneous emission driven by a gradient of the bunch current in the presence of different levels of noise in bunches. To perform a vast amount of simulations required for obtaining statistically valid results, we developed a memory and time efficient one-dimensional simulation code based on the integral solution to a Klein-Gordon equation describing the field evolution. The longitudinal granularity of the electron bunch density originating from shot noise is maintained throughout the analysis. Three-dimensional effects like transver…
The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility operated at the Paul Scherrer Institute between 2010 and 2014, serving as a pilot plant and testbed for the development and realization of SwissFEL, the X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility under construction at the same institute. The test facility consisted of a laser-driven rf electron gun followed by an S-band booster linac, a magnetic bunch compression chicane and a diagnostic section including a transverse deflecting rf cavity. It delivered electron bunches of up to 200 pC charge and up to 250 MeV beam energy at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The measuremen…
Recent investigations of RF copper structures operated at cryogenic temperatures performed by a SLAC-UCLA collaboration have shown a dramatic increase in the maximum surface electric field, to 500 MV/m. We examine use of these fields to enable very high field cryogenic photoinjectors that can attain over an order of magnitude increase in peak electron beam brightness. We present beam dynamics studies relevant to X-ray FEL injectors, using start-to-end simulations that show the high brightness and low emittance of this source enables operation of a compact FEL reaching a photon energy of 80 keV…
The simplest high gain free electron laser (FEL) amplifier concept is proposed. A klystron amplifier has the useful property that the various electronic processes take place in separate portions of the amplifier, rather than overlapping as in FEL amplifier with an uniform undulator. The klystron consists of two fundamental parts: succession of 2-3 cascades (modulator), and an output undulator (radiator) in which the modulated electron beam coherently radiates. Each cascade consists of uniform undulator and dispersion section. Unlike distributed optical klystrons, we have a high gain per cascad…
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is the first x-ray laser user facility based upon a free electron laser (FEL). In addition to many other stringent requirements, the LCLS XFEL requires extraordinary beam quality to saturate at 1.5 angstroms within a 100 meter undulator.[1] This new light source is using the last kilometer of the three kilometer linac at SLAC to accelerate the beam to an energy as high as 13.6 GeV and required a new electron gun and injector to produce a very bright beam for acceleration. At the outset of the project it was recognized that existing RF guns had the potenti…
Free Electron Lasers driven by Super-Conducting Linacs require the generation, acceleration and transport of trains of bunches with high charge, high repetition rate and low emittance. A numerical model already developed for the modeling of beam dynamics in SC Linacs has been now extended to treat RF guns with proper description of the photocathode bunch generation. The model algorithm is based on a coupled integration of Newton and Maxwell equations under a slowly varying envelope approximation for the time evolution of mode amplitudes in the accelerating structure and an envelope equation de…
