We show how the small perturbations of a linear cocycle have a relative rotation number associated with an invariant measure of the base dynamics an with a $2$-dimensional bundle of the finest dominated splitting (provided that some orientation is preserved). Likewise small perturbations of diffeomorphisms have a relative rotation number associated with an invariant measure supported in a hyperbolic set and with a $2$-dimensional bundle as above.
The properties of that relative rotation number allow some steps towards dichotomies between complex eigenvalues and dominated splittings in higher dimensions and higher regularity. We also prove that generic smooth linear cocycles above a full-shift (and actually above infinite factors of transitive subshift of finite type) admit a periodic point with simple Lyapunov spectrum.
In this paper we prove the $C^1$-density of every $C^r$-conjugacy class in the closed subset of diffeomorphisms of the circle with a given irrational rotation number.
We augment the method of $C^\infty$ conjugation approximation with explicit estimates on the conjugacy map. This allows us to construct ergodic volume preserving diffeomorphisms measure-theoretically isomorphic to any apriori given Liouville rotation on a variety of manifolds. In the special case of tori the maps can be made uniquely ergodic.
We prove that if two analytic multicritical circle maps with the same bounded type rotation number are topologically conjugate by a conjugacy which matches the critical points of the two maps while preserving the orders of their criticalities, then the conjugacy necessarily has $C^{1+α}$ regularity, where $α$ depends only on the bound on the type of the rotation number. We then extend this rigidity result to $C^3$-smooth bi-cubic circle maps.
Our object of study is non smooth vector fields on $\R^2$. We apply the techniques of geometric singular perturbations in non smooth vector fields after regularization and a blow$-$up. In this way we are able to bring out some results that bridge the space between non$-$smooth dynamical systems presenting typical singularities and singularly perturbed smooth systems.
We prove quantitative statistical stability results for a large class of small $C^{0}$ perturbations of circle diffeomorphisms with irrational rotation numbers. We show that if the rotation number is Diophantine the invariant measure varies in a Hölder way under perturbation of the map and the Hölder exponent depends on the Diophantine type of the rotation number. The set of admissable perturbations includes the ones coming from spatial discretization and hence numerical truncation. We also show linear response for smooth perturbations that preserve the rotation number, as well as for more gen…
Detect the birth of limit cycles in non-smooth vector fields is a very important matter into the recent theory of dynamical systems and applied sciences. The goal of this paper is to study the bifurcation of limit cycles from a continuum of periodic orbits filling up a two-dimensional isochronous cylinder of a vector field in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. The approach involves the regularization process of non-smooth vector fields and a method based in the Malkin's bifurcation function for $C^{0}$ perturbations. The results provide sufficient conditions in order to obtain limit cycles emerging from the cy…
It is proved that all special flows over the rotation by an irrational $α$ with bounded partial quotients and under $f$ which is piecewise absolutely continuous with a non-zero sum of jumps are mildly mixing. Such flows are also shown to enjoy a condition which emulates the Ratner condition introduced in \cite{Rat}. As a consequence we construct a smooth vector--field on $\T^2$ with one singularity point such that the corresponding flow $(ϕ_t)_{t\in\R}$ preserves a smooth measure, its set of ergodic components consists of a family of periodic orbits and one component of positive measure on whi…
Decomposition of the free rigid body Hamiltonian into a "main problem" and a perturbation term provides an efficient integration scheme that avoids the use of elliptic functions and integrals. In the case of short-axis-mode rotation, it is shown that the use of complex variables converts the integration of the torque-free motion by perturbations into a simple exercise of polynomial algebra that can also accommodate the gravity-gradient perturbation when the rigid body rotation is close enough to the axis of maximum inertia.
In this paper, we perturb the global center of the planar polynomial vector fields $\mathcal{X}(x,y)=(-y(x^2+a^2),x(x^2+a^2))$ ($a\neq0$) inside cubic piecewise smooth polynomials with switching line $y=0$. By using average function of first order, we prove that the sharper bound of the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the period annulus is 6.
A simple rearrangement of the torque free motion Hamiltonian shapes it as a perturbation problem for bodies rotating close to the principal axis of maximum inertia, independently of their triaxiality. The complete reduction of the main part of this Hamiltonian via the Hamilton-Jacobi equation provides the action-angle variables that ease the construction of a perturbation solution by Lie transforms. The lowest orders of the transformation equations of the perturbation solution are checked to agree with Kinoshita's corresponding expansions for the exact solution of the free rigid body problem. …
This paper investigates optimal control problems formulated over a class of piecewise-smooth vector fields. Instead of optimizing over the discontinuous system directly, we instead formulate optimal control problems over a family of regularizations which are obtained by "smoothing out" the discontinuity in the original system. It is shown that the smooth problems can be used to obtain accurate derivative information about the non-smooth problem, under standard regularity conditions. We then indicate how the regularizations can be used to consistently approximate the non-smooth optimal control …
A two-fold singularity is a point on a discontinuity surface of a piecewise-smooth vector field at which the vector field is tangent to the surface on both sides. Due to the double tangency, forward evolution from a two-fold is typically ambiguous. This is an especially serious issue for two-folds that are reached by the forward orbits of a non-zero measure set of initial points. The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of perturbing the vector field so that forward evolution is well-defined, and characterising the perturbed dynamics in the limit that the size of the perturbation te…
In this paper, we study the bifurcate of limit cycles for Bogdanov-Takens system($\dot{x}=y$, $\dot{y}=-x+x^{2}$) under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials of degree $2$ and $n$ respectively. We bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles with switching curve $x=y^{2m}$($m$ is a positive integral) are $(39m+36)n+77m+21(m\geq 2)$ and $50n+52(m=1)$ (taking into account the multiplicity). The upper bounds number of limit cycles with switc…
We extend some known results from smooth dynamical systems to the category of Lipschitz homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces. We consider dynamical properties as robust expansiveness and structural stability allowing Lipschitz perturbations with respect to a hyperbolic metric. We also study the relationship between Lipschitz topologies and the $C^1$ topology on smooth manifolds.
In this paper, we consider the bifurcation of limit cycles for generic L-V system ($\dot{x}=y+x^2-y^2\pm\frac{4}{\sqrt{3}}xy,~\dot{y}=-x+2xy$) and B-T system ($\dot{x}=y,~\dot{y}=-x+x^2$) under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials with degree $n$. Here the switching line is $y=0$. By using Picard-Fuchs equations, we bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles for generic L-V system and B-T system are respectively $36n-65~(n\geq4),~37,57…
In this paper, by using Picard-Fuchs equations and Chebyshev criterion, we study the bifurcate of limit cycles for quadratic Hamilton system $S^{(2)}$ and $S^{(3)}$: $\dot{x}= y+2axy+by^2$, $\dot{y}=-x+x^2-ay^2$ with $a\in(-\frac{1}{2},1)$, $b=(1-a)(1+2a)^{1/2}$ and $a=1$, $b=0$ respectively, under perturbations of piecewise smooth polynomials with degree $n$. The discontinuity is the line $y=0$. We bound the number of zeros of first order Melnikov function which controls the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the center. It is proved that the upper bounds of the number of limit cycles fo…
This paper investigates the exact number of limit cycles given by the averaging theory of first order for the piecewise smooth integrable non-Hamiltonian system \begin{eqnarray*} (\dot{x},\ \dot{y})=\begin{cases} (-y(x+a)^2+\varepsilon f^+(x,y),\ x(x+a)^2+\varepsilon g^+(x,y)),\ \ x\geq0,\\ (-y(x+b)^2+\varepsilon f^-(x,y),\ x(x+b)^2+\varepsilon g^-(x,y)),\ ~ \, x<0,\\ \end{cases}\end{eqnarray*} where $ab\neq 0$, $0<|\varepsilon|\ll 1$, and $f^\pm(x,y)$ and $g^\pm(x,y)$ are polynomials of degree $n$. It is proved that the exact number of limit cycles emerging from the period annulus surrounding…
We study the notion of stochastic stability with respect to diffusive perturbations for flows with smooth invariant measures. We investigate the question fully for non-singular flows on the circle. We also show that volume-preserving flows are stochastically stable with respect to perturbations that are associated with homogeneous diffusions.
Nonsmooth formulations of physical models are common, particularly in climate modeling. However, in many of these models, there is little justification for this modeling choice, and no mathematical indication that the resulting behavior in the nonsmooth system is consistent with behavior that would arise in a similar smooth system. I explore this question by analyzing the relationship between a smooth and nonsmooth Hopf bifurcation in one particular climate example. I show that the nonsmooth bifurcation perturbs to the smooth bifurcation under small changes in a limiting parameter.
In this paper some piecewise smooth perturbations of a three-dimensional differential system are considered. The existence of invariant manifolds filled by periodic orbits is obtained after suitable small perturbations of the original differential system. These manifolds emerge from a continuum of cylinders of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which does exist for the piecewise smooth differential systems after a rotation of some planar algebraic polynomial curves. The main tool used in order to obtain the results is the averaging theory for piecewise smooth differential systems.
We consider a one-parameter family of invertible maps of a two-dimensional lattice, obtained by applying round-off to planar rotations. All orbits of these maps are conjectured to be periodic. We let the angle of rotation approach pi/2, and show that the limit of vanishing discretisation is described by an integrable piecewise-affine Hamiltonian flow, whereby the plane foliates into families of invariant polygons with an increasing number of sides. Considered as perturbations of the flow, the lattice maps assume a different character, described in terms of strip maps: a variant of those found …
We consider a family of semilinear parabolic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} u_t(x,t) &=Δu(x,t) -au(x,t) + f(u(x,t)),\ x \in Ω_ε\mbox{ and } t>0\,,\\ \displaystyle\frac{\partial u}{\partial N}(x,t) &=g(u(x,t)),\ x \in \partialΩ_ε\mbox{ and } t>0\,, \end{aligned} \right. \] where $Ω_0 \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a smooth (at least $\mathcal{C}^2$) domain , $Ω_ε = h_ε(Ω_0)$ and $h_ε$ is a family of diffeomorphisms converging to the identity in the $\mathcal{C}^1$-norm. Assuming suitable regularity and dissipative conditions for the nonlinearites, we show that …
In this paper we contribute to qualitative and geometric analysis of planar piecewise smooth vector fields, which consist of two smooth vector fields separated by the straight line $y=0$ and sharing the origin as a non-degenerate equilibrium. In the sense of $Σ$-equivalence, we provide a sufficient condition for linearization and give phase portraits and normal forms for these linearizable vector fields. This condition is hard to be weakened because there exist vector fields which are not linearizable when this condition is not satisfied. Regarding perturbations, a necessary and sufficient con…
We prove that every $C^\infty$-smooth, area preserving diffeomorphism of the closed 2-disk having not more than one periodic point is the uniform limit of periodic $C^\infty$-smooth diffeomorphisms. In particular every smooth irrational pseudo-rotation can be $C^0$-approximated by integrable systems. This partially answers a long standing question of A. Katok regarding zero entropy Hamiltonian systems in low dimensions. Our approach uses pseudoholomorphic curve techniques from symplectic geometry.
We study perturbations of a partially hyperbolic toral automorphism L which is diagonalizable over C and has a dense center foliation. For a small perturbation of L with a smooth center foliation we establish existence of a smooth leaf conjugacy to L. We also show that if a small perturbation of an ergodic irreducible L has smooth center foliation and is bi-Holder conjugate to L, then the conjugacy is smooth. As a corollary, we show that for any symplectic perturbation of such an L any bi-Holder conjugacy must be smooth. For a totally irreducible L with two-dimensional center, we establish a n…
Using pseudoholomorphic curves techniques from symplectic geometry, Barney Bramham proved recently that every smooth irrational pseudo-rotation of the unit disk is the limit, for the $C^0$ topology, of a sequence of smooth periodic diffeomorphisms. We give here a finite dimensional proof of this result that works in the case where the pseudo-rotation is smoothly conjugate to a rotation on the boundary circle. The proof extends to $C^1$ pseudo rotations and is based on the dynamical study of the gradient flow associated to a generating family of functions given by Chaperon's broken geodesics me…
Since Moser's seminal work it is well known that the invariant curves of smooth nearly integrable twist maps of the cylinder with Diophantine rotation number are preserved under perturbation. In this paper we show that, in the analytic class, the result extends to Bryuno rotation numbers. First, we will show that the series expansion for the invariant curves in powers of the perturbation parameter can be formally defined, then we shall prove that the series converges absolutely in a neighbourhood of the origin. This will be achieved using multiscale analysis and renormalisation group technique…
