It is proved that all special flows over the rotation by an irrational $α$ with bounded partial quotients and under $f$ which is piecewise absolutely continuous with a non-zero sum of jumps are mildly mixing. Such flows are also shown to enjoy a condition which emulates the Ratner condition introduced in \cite{Rat}. As a consequence we construct a smooth vector--field on $\T^2$ with one singularity point such that the corresponding flow $(ϕ_t)_{t\in\R}$ preserves a smooth measure, its set of ergodic components consists of a family of periodic orbits and one component of positive measure on which $(ϕ_t)_{t\in\R}$ is mildly mixing and is spectrally disjoint from all mixing flows.
We give a condition on a piecewise constant roof function and an irrational rotation by $α$ on the circle to give rise to a special flow having the mild mixing property. Such flows will also satisfy Ratner's property. As a consequence we obtain a class of mildly mixing singular flows on the two-torus that arise from quasi-periodic Hamiltonians flows by velocity changes.
Bromberg and Ulcigrai constructed piecewise smooth functions f on the torus such that the set of angles alpha for which the Birkhoff sums of f with respect to the irrational translation by alpha satisfies a temporal distributional limit theorem along the orbit of a.e. x has Hausdorff dimension one. We show that the Lebesgue measure of this set of angles is equal to zero.
We present a one-parameter family of continuous, piecewise affine, area preserving maps of the square, which are inspired by a dynamical system in game theory. Interested in the coexistence of stochastic and (quasi-)periodic behaviour, we investigate invariant annuli separated by invariant circles. For certain parameter values, we explicitly construct invariant circles both of rational and irrational rotation numbers, and present numerical experiments of the dynamics on the annuli bounded by these circles.
We prove that if $g\geq 2$ then the set of all Abelian differentials $(M,ω)$ for which the vertical flow is mildly mixing is dense in every stratum of the moduli space $\mathcal{H}_g$. The proof is based on a sufficient condition for special flows over irrational rotations and under piecewise constant roof functions to be mildly mixing.
We prove some basic results for a dynamical system given by a piecewise linear and contractive map on the unit interval that takes two possible values at a point of discontinuity. We prove that there exists a universal limit cycle in the non-exceptional cases, and that the exceptional parameter set is very tiny in terms of gauge functions. The exceptional two-dimensional parameter is shown to have Hausdorff-dimension one. We also study the invariant sets and the limit sets; these are sometimes different and there are several cases to consider. In addition, we give a thorough investigation of t…
Let $f_{i},$ $i=1,2$ be piecewise-smooth $C^{1}$ circle homeomorphisms with two break points, $\log Df_{i},$ $i=1,2$ are absolutely continuous on each continuity intervals of $Df_{i}$ and $D\log Df_{i}\in L^{p}$ for some $p>1.$ Suppose, the jump ratios of $f_{1} $ and $f_{2} $ at their break points do not coincide but have the same total jumps (i.e. the product of jump ratios) and identical irrational rotation number of bounded type. Then the conjugation $h$ between $f_{1} $ and $f_{2} $ is a singular function, i.e. it is continuous on $S^1,$ but $Dh(x)=0$ a.e. with respect to Lebesgue measure…
We consider special flows over the rotation by an irrational $α$ under the roof functions of bounded variation without continuous, singular part in the Lebesgue decomposition and the sum of jumps $\neq 0$. We show that all such flows are weakly mixing. Under the additional assumption that $α$ has bounded partial quotients, we study weak Ratner's property. We establish this property whenever an additional condition (stable under sufficiently small perturbations) on the set of jumps is satisfied. While it is classical that the flows under consideration are not mixing, one more condition on the s…
The liftable centralizer for special flows over irrational rotations is studied. It is shown that there are such flows under piecewise constant roof functions which are rigid and whose liftable centralizer is trivial.
We consider iterated function systems on the real line that consist of continuous, piecewise linear functions. Under a mild separation condition, we show that the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the attractor are equal to the minimum of 1 and the exponent which comes from the most natural system of covers of the attractor.
A von Neumann flow is a special flow over an irrational rotation of the circle and under a piecewise $C^1$ roof function with a non-zero sum of jumps. We prove that the absolute value of the slope is a (measure theoretic) invariant in the class of von Neumann special flows with one discontinuity, i.e. two ergodic von Neumann flows with one discontinuity are not isomorphic if the slopes of the roof functions have different absolute values, regardless of the irrational rotation in the base.
By studying the weak closure of multidimensional off-diagonal self-joinings we provide a criterion for non-isomorphism of a flow with its inverse, hence the non-reversibility of a flow. This is applied to special flows over rigid automorphisms. In particular, we apply the criterion to special flows over irrational rotations, providing a large class of non-reversible flows, including some analytic reparametrizations of linear flows on the two torus, so called von Neumann's flows and some special flows with piecewise polynomial roof functions.. A topological counterpart is also developed with th…
We consider the regularity of measurable solutions $χ$ to the cohomological equation \[ ϕ= χ\circ T -χ, \] where $(T,X,μ)$ is a dynamical system and $ϕ\colon X\rightarrow \R$ is a $C^k$ valued cocycle in the setting in which $T \colon X\rightarrow X$ is a piecewise $C^k$ Gibbs--Markov map, an affine $β$-transformation of the unit interval or more generally a piecewise $C^{k}$ uniformly expanding map of an interval. We show that under mild assumptions, bounded solutions $χ$ possess $C^k$ versions. In particular we show that if $(T,X,μ)$ is a $β$-transformation then $χ$ has a $C^k$ version, thus…
This paper studies the behavior under iteration of the maps T_{ab}(x,y)=(F_{ab}(x)-y,x) of the plane R^2, in which F_{ab}(x)=ax if x>=0 and bx if x<0. The orbits under iteration correspond to solutions of the nonlinear difference equation x_{n+2}= 1/2(a-b)|x_{n+1}| + 1/2(a+b)x_{n+1} - x_n. This family of maps has the parameter space (a,b)\in R^2. These maps are area-preserving homeomorphisms of R^s that map rays from the origin into rays from the origin. This paper shows the existence of special parameter values where T_{ab} has every nonzero orbit an invariant circle with irrational rotation …
We consider deterministic random walks on the real line driven by irrational rotations, or equivalently, skew product extensions of a rotation by $α$ where the skewing cocycle is a piecewise constant mean zero function with a jump by one at a point $β$. When $α$ is badly approximable and $β$ is badly approximable with respect to $α$, we prove a Temporal Central Limit theorem (in the terminology recently introduced by D.Dolgopyat and O.Sarig), namely we show that for any fixed initial point, the occupancy random variables, suitably rescaled, converge to a Gaussian random variable. This result g…
In this paper we answer positively a question of whether it is possible for a circle diffeomorphism with breaks to be smoothly conjugate to a rigid rotation in the case when its breaks are lying on pairwise distinct trajectories. An example constructed is a piecewise linear circle homeomorphism that has four break points lying on distinct trajectories, and whose invariant measure is absolutely continuous w.r.t.\ the Lebesgue measure. The irrational rotation number for our example can be chosen a Roth number, but not of bounded type.
We prove that, under a mild summability condition on the growth of the derivative on critical orbits any piecewise monotone interval map possibly containing discontinuities and singularities with infinite derivative (cusp map) admits an ergodic invariant probability measures which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.

We consider a class of piecewise smooth one-dimensional maps with critical points and singularities (possibly with infinite derivative). Under mild summability conditions on the growth of the derivative on critical orbits, we prove the central limit theorem and a vector-valued almost sure invariance principle. We also obtain results on decay of correlations.
We introduce a holistic framework for the analysis, approximation and control of the trajectories of hybrid dynamical systems which display event-triggered discrete jumps in the continuous state. We begin by demonstrating how to explicitly represent the dynamics of this class of systems using a single piecewise-smooth vector field defined on a manifold, and then employ Filippov's solution concept to describe the trajectories of the system. The resulting \emph{hybrid Filippov solutions} greatly simplify the mathematical description of hybrid executions, providing a unifying solution concept wit…
We consider the effect on the mixing properties of a piecewise smooth interval map $f$ when its domain is divided into $N$ equal subintervals and $f$ is composed with a permutation of these. The case of the stretch-and-fold map $f(x)=mx \bmod 1$ for integers $m \geq 2$ is examined in detail. We give a combinatorial description of those permutations $σ$ for which $σ\circ f$ is still (topologically) mixing, and show that the proportion of such permutations tends to $1$ as $N \to \infty$. We then investigate the mixing rate of $σ\circ f$ (as measured by the modulus of the second largest eigenvalu…
We consider special flows over two-dimensional rotations by $(α,β)$ on $\T^2$ and under piecewise $C^2$ roof functions $f$ satisfying von Neumann's condition $\int_{\T^2}f_x(x,y)\,dx\,dy\neq 0\neq \int_{\T^2}f_y(x,y)\,dx\,dy.$ Such flows are shown to be always weakly mixing and never partially rigid. For an uncountable set of $(α,β)$ with both $α$ and $β$ of unbounded partial quotients the strong mixing property is proved to hold. It is also proved that while specifying to a subclass of roof functions and to ergodic rotations for which $α$ and $β$ are of bounded partial quotients the correspon…
We study invariant measures of a piecewise expanding map in $\mathbb{R}^m$ defined by an expanding similitude modulo lattice. Using the result of Bang on a problem of Tarski, we show that when the similarity ratio is not less than $m+1$, it has an absolutely continuous invariant measure equivalent to the $m$-dimensional Lebesgue measure, under some mild assumption on the fundamental domain. Applying the method to the case $m=2$, we obtain an alternative proof of the result in Akiyama-Caalim:2015 together with some improvement.
A function $J$ defined on a family $C$ of stationary processes is finitely observable if there is a sequence of functions $s_n$ such that $s_n(x_1 ... x_n)\to J(X)$ in probability for every process $X=(x_n)\in C$. Recently, Ornstein and Weiss roved the striking result that if $C$ is the class of aperiodic ergodic finite valued processes, then the only finitely observable isomorphism invariant on $C$ is entropy. We sharpen this in several ways. Our main theorem is that if $X \to Y$ is a zero-entropy extension of finite entropy ergodic systems and $C$ is the family of processes arising from $X$ …
