The adjacency matrices of graphs form a special subset of the set of all integer symmetric matrices. The description of which graphs have all their eigenvalues in the interval [-2,2] (i.e., those having spectral radius at most 2) has been known for several decades. In 2007 we extended this classification to arbitrary integer symmetric matrices.
In this paper we turn our attention to symmetrizable matrices. We classify the connected nonsymmetric but symmetrizable matrices which have entries in $\Z$ that are maximal with respect to having all their eigenvalues in [-2,2]. This includes a spectral characterisation of the affine and finite Dynkin diagrams that are not simply laced (much as the graph result gives a spectral characterisation of the simply laced ones).
The eccentricity (anti-adjacency) matrix $\varepsilon(G)$ of a graph $G$ is obtained from the distance matrix by retaining the eccentricities in each row and each column. This matrix is first defined in 2018 by Wang et al. \cite{1}. In this paper we have characterized the graphs which have at most one (hence exactly) positive eigenvalue of $\varepsilon(G)$.
A mixed graph is obtained by orienting some edges of a simple graph. The positive inertia index of a mixed graph is defined as the number of positive eigenvalues of its Hermitian adjacency matrix, including multiplicities. This matrix was introduced by Liu and Li, independently by Guo and Mohar, in the study of graph energy. Recently, Yuan et al. characterized the mixed graphs with exactly one positive eigenvalue. In this paper, we study the positive inertia indices of mixed graphs and characterize the mixed graphs with cut vertices having positive inertia index 2.
The parameter $σ(G)$ of a graph $G$ stands for the number of Laplacian eigenvalues greater than or equal to the average degree of $G$. In this work, we address the problem of characterizing those graphs $G$ having $σ(G)=1$. Our conjecture is that these graphs are stars plus a (possible empty) set of isolated vertices. We establish a link between $σ(G)$ and the number of anticomponents of $G$. As a by-product, we present some results which support the conjecture, by restricting our analysis to some classes of graphs.
Let $Γ$ be a distance-regular graph with diameter $d$ and Kneser graph $K=Γ_d$, the distance-$d$ graph of $Γ$. We say that $Γ$ is partially antipodal when $K$ has fewer distinct eigenvalues than $Γ$. In particular, this is the case of antipodal distance-regular graphs ($K$ with only two distinct eigenvalues), and the so-called half-antipodal distance-regular graphs ($K$ with only one negative eigenvalue). We provide a characterization of partially antipodal distance-regular graphs (among regular graphs with $d$ distinct eigenvalues) in terms of the spectrum and the mean number of vertices at m…
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph of order $n$. Let $ρ_1(G)\geq ρ_2(G)\geq \cdots \geq ρ_{n-1}(G)> ρ_n(G)=0$ be the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(G)$ of $G$. Denote by $m(ρ_i)$ the multiplicity of the normalized Laplacian eigenvalue $ρ_i$. Let $ν(G)$ be the independence number of $G$. In this paper, we give a full characterization of graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$, which answers a remaining problem in [S. Sun, K.C. Das, On the multiplicities of normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 365…
We completely describe all integer symmetric matrices that have all their eigenvalues in the interval [-2,2]. Along the way we classify all signed graphs, and then all charged signed graphs, having all their eigenvalues in this same interval. We then classify subsets of the above for which the integer symmetric matrices, signed graphs and charged signed graphs have all their eigenvalues in the open interval (-2,2).
We consider nonregular graphs having precisely three distinct eigenvalues. The focus is mainly on the case of graphs having two distinct valencies and our results include constructions of new examples, structure theorems, valency constraints, and a classification of certain special families of such graphs. We also present a new example of a graph with three valencies and three eigenvalues of which there are currently only finitely many known examples.
We consider signed graphs, i.e, graphs with positive or negative signs on their edges. We determine the admissible parameters for the $\{5,6,\ldots,10\}$-regular signed graphs which have only two distinct eigenvalues. For each obtained parameter we provide some examples of signed graphs having two distinct eigenvalues. It turns out to construction of infinitely many signed graphs of each mentioned valency with only two distinct eigenvalues. We prove that for any $k\geq 5$ there are infinitely many connected signed $k$-regular graphs having maximum eigenvalue $\sqrt{k}$. Moreover for each $m\ge…
We show that the number of Laplacian eigenvalues greater than the average degree of a tree having $n$ vertices is at most $\lfloor\frac{n}{2} \rfloor$.
We consider quasirandom properties for Cayley graphs of finite abelian groups. We show that having uniform edge-distribution (i.e., small discrepancy) and having large eigenvalue gap are equivalent properties for such Cayley graphs, even if they are sparse. This positively answers a question of Chung and Graham ["Sparse quasi-random graphs", Combinatorica 22 (2002), no. 2, 217-244] for the particular case of Cayley graphs of abelian groups, while in general the answer is negative.
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph with $n$ vertices. The distance Laplacian matrix $D^{L}(G)$ is defined as $D^L(G)=Diag(Tr)-D(G)$, where $Diag(Tr)$ is the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions and $D(G)$ is the distance matrix of $G$. The eigenvalues of $D^{L}(G)$ are the distance Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ and are denoted by $\partial_{1}^{L}(G)\geq \partial_{2}^{L}(G)\geq \dots \geq \partial_{n}^{L}(G)$. The largest eigenvalue $\partial_{1}^{L}(G)$ is called the distance Laplacian spectral radius. Lu et al. (2017), Fernandes et al. (2018) and Ma et al. (2018) completely characterized …
In this paper, we characterize all connected graphs with exactly three distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of which one is equal to $1$, determine all connected bipartite graphs with at least one vertex of degree $1$ having exactly four distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues, and find all unicyclic graphs with three or four distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues.
The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but l…
For a graph $G$ and a non-zero real number $α$, the graph invariant $S_α(G)$ is the sum of the $α^{th}$ power of the non-zero signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we obtain the sharp bounds of $S_α(G)$ for a connected bipartite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and a connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices having a connectivity less than or equal to $k$, respectively, and propose some open problems for future research.
We consider the problem of decomposing some $t$-uniform hypergraph $G$ into copies of another, say $H$, with nonnegative rational weights. For fixed $H$ on $k$ vertices, we show that this is always possible for all $G$ having sufficiently many vertices and `local density' at least $1-C(t)k^{-2t}$. In the case $t=2$ and $H=K_3$, we show that all large graphs with density at least $27/28$ admit a fractional triangle decomposition. The proof relies on estimates of certain eigenvalues in the Johnson scheme.
Let $\mathcal{G}(n,k)$ be the set of connected graphs of order $n$ with one of the Laplacian eigenvalue having multiplicity $k$. It is well known that $\mathcal{G}(n,n-1)=\{K_n\}$. The graphs of $\mathcal{G}(n,n-2)$ are determined by Das, and the graphs of $\mathcal{G}(n,n-3)$ with four distinct Laplacian eigenvalues are determined by Mohammadian et al. In this paper, we determine the graphs of $\mathcal{G}(n,n-3)$ with three distinct Laplacian eigenvalues, and then the full characterization of the graphs in $\mathcal{G}(n,n-3)$ is completed.
Let $\mathcal{G}(4,2)$ be the set of connected regular graphs with four distinct eigenvalues in which exactly two eigenvalues are simple, $\mathcal{G}(4,2,-1)$ (resp. $\mathcal{G}(4,2,0)$) the set of graphs belonging to $\mathcal{G}(4,2)$ with $-1$ (resp. $0$) as an eigenvalue, and $\mathcal{G}(4,\geq -1)$ the set of connected regular graphs with four distinct eigenvalues and second least eigenvalue not less than $-1$. In this paper, we prove the non-existence of connected graphs having four distinct eigenvalues in which at least three eigenvalues are simple, and determine all the graphs in $\…
This paper deals with the location of the complex zeros of the Tutte polynomial for a class of self-dual graphs. For this class of graphs, as the form of the eigenvalues is known, the regions of the complex plane can be focused on the sets where there is only one dominant eigenvalue in particular containing the positive half plane. Thus, in these regions, the analyticity of the pressure can be derived easily. Next, some examples of graphs with their Tutte polynomial having a few number of eigenvalues are given. The cases of the strip of triangles with a double edge, the wheel and the cycle wit…
The inverse eigenvalue problem of a given graph $G$ is to determine all possible spectra of real symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal entries are governed by the adjacencies in $G$. Barrett et al. introduced the Strong Spectral Property (SSP) and the Strong Multiplicity Property (SMP) in [8]. In that paper it was shown that if a graph has a matrix with the SSP (or the SMP) then a supergraph has a matrix with the same spectrum (or ordered multiplicity list) augmented with simple eigenvalues if necessary, that is, subgraph monotonicity. In this paper we extend this to a form of minor monotonici…
In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of the special graphs of fat Hoffman graphs containing $\mathfrak{K}_{1,2}$ with smallest eigenvalue greater than -3, where $\mathfrak{K}_{1,2}$ is the Hoffman graph having one slim vertex and two fat vertices.
The energy of a graph is defined as the sum the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. A threshold graph G on n vertices is coded by a binary sequence of length n. In this paper we answer a question posed by Jacobs et al. [Eigenvalues and energy in threshold graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 465 (2015) 412-425], by giving an infinite sequences of threshold graphs having the same energy but differ to the complete graph's energy.
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and degree diagonal matrix $D (G)$. In 2017, Nikiforov [Appl. Anal. Discrete Math., 11 (2017) 81--107] defined the matrix $A_α(G) = αD(G) + (1-α)A(G)$ for any real $α\in[0,1]$. The largest eigenvalue of $A(G)$ is called the spectral radius of $G$, while the largest eigenvalue of $A_α(G)$ is called the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$. Let $\mathcal{G}_{n,i}$ be the set of graphs of order $n$ with independence number $i$. Recently, for all graphs in $\mathcal{G}_{n,i}$ having the minimum or the maximum $A$, $Q$ and $A_α$ spectral radius where $i\in\{1…
We prove that the properties of having small discrepancy and having small second eigenvalue are equivalent in Cayley graphs, extending a result of Kohayakawa, Rödl, and Schacht, who treated the abelian case. The proof relies on Grothendieck's inequality. As a corollary, we also prove that a similar result holds in all vertex-transitive graphs.
Determinantal ideals of graphs generalize, among others, the spectrum and the Smith normal form (SNF) of integer matrices associated to graphs. In this work we investigate the relationship of the spectrum and the SNF with the determinantal ideals. We show that an eigenvalue divides the $k$-th invariant factor of its SNF if the eigenvalue belongs to a variety of the $k$-th univariate integer determinantal ideal of the matrix. This result has as a corollary a theorem of Rushanan. We also study graphs having the same determinantal ideals with at most one indeterminate; the socalled codeterminanta…
We review the properties of eigenvectors for the graph Laplacian matrix, aiming at predicting a specific eigenvalue/vector from the geometry of the graph. After considering classical graphs for which the spectrum is known, we focus on eigenvectors that have zero components and extend the pioneering results of Merris (1998) on graph transformations that preserve a given eigenvalue $λ$ or shift it in a simple way. These transformations enable us to obtain eigenvalues/vectors combinatorially instead of numerically; in particular we show that graphs having eigenvalues $λ= 1,2,\dots,6$ up to six ve…
