Let $G$ be a connected simple graph of order $n$. Let $ρ_1(G)\geq ρ_2(G)\geq \cdots \geq ρ_{n-1}(G)> ρ_n(G)=0$ be the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(G)$ of $G$. Denote by $m(ρ_i)$ the multiplicity of the normalized Laplacian eigenvalue $ρ_i$. Let $ν(G)$ be the independence number of $G$. In this paper, we give a full characterization of graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$, which answers a remaining problem in [S. Sun, K.C. Das, On the multiplicities of normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 609 (2021) 365-385], $i.e.,$ there is no graph with $m(ρ_1)=n-3$ ($n\geq 6$) and $ν(G)=2$. Moreover, we confirm that all the graphs with $m(ρ_1)=n-3$ are determined by their normalized Laplacian spectra.
In this paper, we study the multiplicity of the Laplacian eigenvalues of trees. It is known that for trees, integer Laplacian eigenvalues larger than $1$ are simple and also the multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalue $1$ has been well studied before. Here we consider the multiplicities of the other (non-integral) Laplacian eigenvalues. We give an upper bound and determine the trees of order $n$ that have a multiplicity that is close to the upper bound $\frac{n-3}{2}$, and emphasize the particular role of the algebraic connectivity.
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph with $n$ vertices. The distance Laplacian matrix $D^{L}(G)$ is defined as $D^L(G)=Diag(Tr)-D(G)$, where $Diag(Tr)$ is the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions and $D(G)$ is the distance matrix of $G$. The eigenvalues of $D^{L}(G)$ are the distance Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ and are denoted by $\partial_{1}^{L}(G)\geq \partial_{2}^{L}(G)\geq \dots \geq \partial_{n}^{L}(G)$. The largest eigenvalue $\partial_{1}^{L}(G)$ is called the distance Laplacian spectral radius. Lu et al. (2017), Fernandes et al. (2018) and Ma et al. (2018) completely characterized …
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph on $n$ vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}(G)$ be the normalized Laplacian matrix of $G$ and $ρ_{n-1}(G)$ be the second least eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L}(G)$. Denote by $ν(G)$ the independence number of $G$. Recently, the paper [Characterization of graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$, arXiv:1912.13227] discussed the graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$. However, there is one remaining case (graphs with $ρ_{n-1}(G)\neq 1$ and $ν(G)= 2$) not considered. In this paper, we focus on cographs and graphs wi…
In this paper, we interpret the multiplicity of 1 in Laplacian spectra of trees and prove that Faria's inequality turns to an equality in the case of normal trees which yields that in any tree without a vertex of degree 2, Faria equality holds and multiplicity of 1 in Laplacian spectrum will be equal to star degree of the the tree. As a result we introduce a combinatorial procedure for computing the multiplicity of 1. In the way to prove this results we will introduce many transformation on graphs which are invariant regarding to the multiplicity of 1. We also introduce an inequality for the m…
In this paper, we characterize all connected graphs with exactly three distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of which one is equal to $1$, determine all connected bipartite graphs with at least one vertex of degree $1$ having exactly four distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues, and find all unicyclic graphs with three or four distinct normalized Laplacian eigenvalues.
In this paper, we obtain the bounds of the extreme eigenvalues of a normalized and signless Laplacian matrices using by their traces. In addition, we determine the bounds for k-th eigenvalues of normalized and signless Laplacian matrices.
Graphs with few distinct eigenvalues have been investigated extensively. In this paper, we focus on another relevant topic: characterizing graphs with some eigenvalue of large multiplicity. Specifically, the normalized Laplacian matrix of a graph is considered here. Let $ρ_{n-1}(G)$ and $ν(G)$ be the second least normalized Laplacian eigenvalue and the independence number of a graph $G$, respectively. As the main conclusions, two families of $n$-vertex connected graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$ are determined: graphs with $ρ_{n-1}(G)=-1$ and graphs with $ρ…
In [Steve Butler. A note about cospectral graphs for the adjacency and normalized Laplacian matrices. Linear Multilinear Algebra, 58(3-4):387-390, 2010.], Butler constructed a family of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. In this article, we extend this construction for generating larger classes of bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for both the adjacency and the normalized Laplacian matrices. Also, we provide a couple of constructions of non-bipartite graphs, which are cospectral for the adjacency matrices but not necessaril…
In this paper we show a monotonicity theorem for the harmonic eigenfunction of λ_{1} of the normalized Laplacian over the points of articulation of a graph. We introduce the definition of Perron component for the normalized Laplacian matrix of a graph and show how its second smallest eigenvalue can be characterized using this definition.
For a simple and connected graph, several lower and upper bounds of graph invariants expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix have been proposed in literature. In this paper, through a unified approach based on majorization techniques, we provide some novel inequalities depending on additional information on the localization of the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix. Some numerical examples show how sharper results can be obtained with respect to those existing in literature.
Let $M=[m_{ij}]$ be an $n\times m$ real matrix, $ρ$ be a nonzero real number, and $A$ be a symmetric real matrix. We denote by $D(M)$ the $n\times n$ diagonal matrix $diag(\sum_{j=1}^{m}m_{1j},\ldots,\sum_{j=1}^{m}m_{nj})$ and denote by $L_{A}^ρ$ the generalized Laplacian matrix $D(A)-ρA$. A well-known result of Grone et al. states that by connecting one of the end-vertices of $P_{3}$ to an arbitrary vertex of a graph, does not change the multiplicity of Laplacian eigenvalue $1$. We extend this theorem and some other results for a given generalized Laplacian eigenvalue $μ$. Furthermore, we giv…
In this paper, we compute normalized Laplacian spectra of central graph of a regular graph, central vertex join and central edge join of two regular graphs. Also, we determine their Kemeny's constant and degree Kirchhoff index.
The spectrum of the normalized Laplacian matrix cannot determine the number of edges in a graph, however finding constructions of cospectral graphs with differing number of edges has been elusive. In this paper we use basic properties of twins and scaling to show how to construct such graphs. We also give examples of families of graphs which are cospectral with a subgraph for the normalized Laplacian matrix.
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with order $n$. Let $\mathcal{L}(G)$ be the normalized Laplacian matrix of $G$. Let $λ_{k}(G)$ be the $k$-th smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. Denote $ρ(A)$ the spectral radius of the matrix $A$. In this paper, we study the behaviors of $λ_{2}(G)$ and $ρ(\mathcal{L}(G))$ when the graph is perturbed by three operations.
We give a combinatorial characterization of graphs whose normalized Laplacian has three distinct eigenvalues. Strongly regular graphs and complete bipartite graphs are examples of such graphs, but we also construct more exotic families of examples from conference graphs, projective planes, and certain quasi-symmetric designs.
Let G be a graph and let Δ,δbe the maximum and minimum degrees of G respectively, where Δ/δ<c<\sqrt{2} and c is a constant. In this paper we establish a sufficient spectral condition for the graph G to be Hamiltonian, that is, the nontrivial eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of G are sufficiently close to 1.
For simple graphs $G$, $G_1$ and $G_2$, we denote their double corona based on $R$-graph by $G^{(R)}\otimes{\{G_1,G_2\}}$. This paper determines the normalized Laplacian spectrum of $G^{(R)}\otimes{\{G_1,G_2\}}$ in terms of these of $G$, $G_1$ and $G_2$ whenever $G$, $G_1$ and $G_2$ are regular. The obtained result reduces to the normalized Laplacian spectra of the $R$-vertex corona $G^{(R)}\odot{G_1}$ and $R$-edge corona $G^{(R)}\circleddash{G_2}$ by choosing $G_2$ or $G_1$ as a null-graph, respectively. Finally, applying the results of the paper, we construct infinitely many pairs of normali…
The distance matrix $\mathcal{D}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The transmission of a vertex $v_i$ in $G$ is the sum of the distances from $v_i$ to all other vertices and $T(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of transmissions of the vertices of the graph. The normalized distance Laplacian, $\mathcal{D}^{\mathcal {L}}(G)=I-T(G)^{-1/2}\mathcal{D}(G) T(G)^{-1/2}$, is introduced. This is analogous to the normalized Laplacian matrix, $\mathcal{L}(G)=I-D(G)^{-1/2}A(G)D(G)^{-1/2}$, where $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of degrees of the vertices of the grap…
Let $λ_{2}(G)$ be the second smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph $G$. In this paper, we determine all unicyclic graphs of order $n\geq21$ with $λ_{2}(G)\geq 1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$. Moreover, the unicyclic graphs with $λ_{2}(G)=1-\frac{\sqrt{6}}{3}$ are also determined.
We give a construction of a family of (weighted) graphs that are pairwise cospectral with respect to the normalized Laplacian matrix, or equivalently probability transition matrix. This construction can be used to form pairs of cospectral graphs with differing number of edges, including situations where one graph is a subgraph of the other. The method used to demonstrate cospectrality is by showing the characteristic polynomials are equal.
The Laplacian matrix of a graph $G$ is denoted by $L(G)=D(G)-A(G)$, where $D(G)=diag(d(v_{1}),\ldots , d(v_{n}))$ is a diagonal matrix and $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two graphs. A one-edge connection of two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ is a graph $G=G_1\odot_{uv} G_2$ with $V(G)=V(G_1)\cup V(G_2)$ and $E(G)= E(G_1)\cup E(G_2)\cup \{e=uv\}$, where $u\in V(G_1)$ and $v\in V(G_2)$. We investigate the multiplicity of the Laplacian eigenvalue $2$ of $G_1\odot_{uv} G_2$, while the unicyclic graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ have $2$ among their Laplacian eigenvalues, by using their…
For a simple and connected graph, a new graph invariant $s_α^{*}(G)$, defined as the sum of powers of the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix, has been introduced by Bozkurt and Bozkurt in [7]. Lower and upper bounds have been proposed by the authors. In this paper, we localize the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix by adapting a theoretical method, proposed in Bianchi and Torriero ([5]), based on majorization techniques. Through this approach we derive upper and lower bounds of $s_α^{*}(G)$. Some numerical examples show how sharper results can be obtained with respect t…
The spectrum of the normalized graph Laplacian yields a very comprehensive set of invariants of a graph. In order to understand the information contained in those invariants better, we systematically investigate the behavior of this spectrum under local and global operations like motif doubling, graph joining or splitting. The eigenvalue 1 plays a particular role, and we therefore emphasize those constructions that change its multiplicity in a controlled manner, like the iterated duplication of nodes.
Let $F_{p,q}$ be the generalized friendship graph $K_1\bigvee (pK_q)$ on $pq+1$ vertices obtained by joining a vertex to all vertices of $p$ disjoint copies of the complete graph $K_q$ on $q$ vertices. In this paper, we prove that $F_{p,q}$ is determined by its normalized Laplacian spectrum if and only if $q\ge 2$, or $q=1$ and $p\le 2$.
The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring numb…
For two simple graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, we denote the subdivision-vertex join and subdivision-edge join of $G_1$ and $G_2$ by $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$, respectively. This paper determines the normalized Laplacian spectra of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$ in terms of these of $G_1$ and $G_2$ whenever $G_1$ and $G_2$ are regular. As applications, we construct some non-regular normalized Laplacian cospectral graphs. Besides we also compute the number of spanning trees and the degree-Kirchhoff index of $G_1\dot{\vee}G_2$ and $G_1\veebar G_2$ for regular graphs $G_1$ and $G_2…
We apply Cauchy's interlacing theorem to derive some eigenvalue bounds to the chromatic number using the normalized Laplacian matrix, including a combinatorial characterization of when equality occurs. Further, we introduce some new expansion type of parameters which generalize the Cheeger constant of a graph, and relate them to the colourings which meet our eigenvalue bound with equality. Finally, we exhibit a family of examples, which include the graphs that appear in the statement of the Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture.
In this paper, we introduce the clique-blew up graph $CL(G)$ of a given graph $G$, which is obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge of $G$ with a complete graph $K_n$. We characterize all the normalized Laplacian spectrum of the grpah $CL(G)$ in term of the given graph $G$. Based on the spectrum obtained, the formulae to calculate the multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, the Kemeny's constant and the number of spanning trees of $CL(G)$ are derived well. Finally, the spectrum and indexes of the clique-blew up iterative graphs are present.
Let $\mathcal{G}(n,k)$ be the set of connected graphs of order $n$ with one of the Laplacian eigenvalue having multiplicity $k$. It is well known that $\mathcal{G}(n,n-1)=\{K_n\}$. The graphs of $\mathcal{G}(n,n-2)$ are determined by Das, and the graphs of $\mathcal{G}(n,n-3)$ with four distinct Laplacian eigenvalues are determined by Mohammadian et al. In this paper, we determine the graphs of $\mathcal{G}(n,n-3)$ with three distinct Laplacian eigenvalues, and then the full characterization of the graphs in $\mathcal{G}(n,n-3)$ is completed.
For a graph $G$, the unraveled ball of radius $r$ centered at a vertex $v$ is the ball of radius $r$ centered at $v$ in the universal cover of $G$. We obtain a lower bound on the weighted spectral radius of unraveled balls of fixed radius in a graph with positive weights on edges, which is used to present an upper bound on the $s$-th (where $s\ge 2$) smallest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of irregular graphs under minor assumptions. Moreover, when $s=2$, the result may be regarded as an Alon--Boppana type bound for a class of irregular graphs.
In this paper we present new L-borderenergetic graphs, this is, graphs which are L-noncospectral with Kn but have the same Laplacian energy. We also present some graphs which are noncospectral to respective normalized Laplacian energy and they have the same normalized Laplacian energy.
We propose the notion of normalized Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ for a gain graphs and study its properties in detail, providing insights and counterexamples along the way. We establish bounds for the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ and characterize the classes of graphs for which equality holds. The relationships between the balancedness, bipartiteness, and their connection to the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ are also studied. Besides, we extend the edge version of eigenvalue interlacing for the gain graphs. Thereupon, we determine the coefficients for the characteristic polynomial of $\…
The spectral theory of the normalized Laplacian for chemical hypergraphs is further investigated. The signless normalized Laplacian is introduced and it is shown that its spectrum for classical hypergraphs coincides with the spectrum of the normalized Laplacian for bipartite chemical hypergraphs. Furthermore, the spectra of special families of hypergraphs are established.
The normalized distance Laplacian of a graph $G$ is defined as $\mathcal{D}^\mathcal{L}(G)=T(G)^{-1/2}(T(G)-\mathcal{D}(G))T(G)^{-1/2}$ where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ is the matrix with pairwise distances between vertices and $T(G)$ is the diagonal transmission matrix. In this project, we study the minimum and maximum spectral radii associated with this matrix, and the structures of the graphs that achieve these values. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Reinhart that the complete graph is the unique graph with minimum spectral radius, and we give several partial results towards a second conjectu…
In this paper, we introduce two new graph operations, namely, the subdivision vertex-edge neighbourhood vertex-corona and the subdivision vertex-edge neighbourhood edge-corona on graphs $G_1$, $G_2$ and $G_3$, and the resulting graphs are denoted by $G_1^S\bowtie (G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$ and $G_1^S\diamondsuit(G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$, respectively. Whereafter, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $G_1^S\bowtie (G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$ and $G_1^S\diamondsuit(G_2^V\cup G_3^E)$ are respectively determined in terms of the corresponding normalized Laplacian spectra of the connected regular graphs $G_{1}$, $G_{2}$ and…
We give a method to construct cospectral graphs for the normalized Laplacian by a local modification in some graphs with special structure. Namely, under some simple assumptions, we can replace a small bipartite graph with a cospectral mate without changing the spectrum of the entire graph. We also consider a related result for swapping out biregular bipartite graphs for the matrix $A+tD$. We produce (exponentially) large families of non-bipartite, non-regular graphs which are mutually cospectral, and also give an example of a graph which is cospectral with its complement but is not self-compl…
In this paper, we determine the two normalized Laplacian spectrum of generalized subdivision- vertex corona, subdivision-edge corona for a connected regular graph with an arbitrary reg- ular graph in terms of their normalized Laplacian eigenvalues. Moreover, applying these results, we find some non-regular normaliaed Laplacian cospectral graphs. These results generalize the existing results in [11].
Let $B_n$ be a linear polyomino chain with $n$ squares. Let $B_n^2$ be the graph obtained by the strong prism of a linear polyomino chain with $n$ squares, i.e. the strong product of $K_2$ and $B_n$. In this paper, explicit expressions for degree-Kirchhoff index and number of spanning trees of $B^2_n$ are determined, respectively. Furthermore, it is interesting to find that the degree-Kirchhoff index of $B^2_n$ is almost one eighth of its Gutman index.
We provide a characterization of perfect state transfer in a quantum walk whose Hamiltonian is given by the normalized Laplacian. We discuss a connection between classical random walks and quantum walks only present in this model, and we also rule out several trees as candidates to host perfect state transfer.
The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its topological and structural characteristics and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, specifically in relation to random walks. In this paper we determine the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated triangulations of a generic simple connected graph. As an application, we also find closed-forms for their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and number of spanning trees.
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $N$. The normalized Laplacian Estrada index of $G$ is defined as $NEE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^Ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,λ_2,\cdots,λ_N$ are the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we give a tight lower bound for $NEE$ of general graphs. We also calculate $NEE$ for a class of treelike fractals, which contain some classical chemical trees as special cases. It is shown that $NEE$ scales linearly with the order of the fractal, in line with a best possible lower bound for connected bipartite graphs.
Here we have investigated a few properties of the eigenvalues of normalized (geometric) graph Laplacian in different graphs. Preservation of eigenvalue 1 from a particular subgraph to the entire graph, the spectrum of the graph constructed with triangles share a common vertex have been addressed. Further using the number and degrees of common neighbors between vertices some new upper bounds for the largest eigenvalue have been introduced.
Here, we find the characteristics polynomial of normalized Laplacian of a tree. The coefficients of this polynomial are expressed by the higher order general Randić indices for matching, whose values depend on the structure of the tree. We also find the expression of these indices for starlike tree and a double-starlike tree, $H_m(p,q)$. Moreover, we show that two cospectral $H_m(p,q)$ of the same diameter are isomorphic.
Given an arbitrary connected $G$, the $n$-polygon graph $τ_n(G)$ is obtained by adding a path with length $n$ $(n\geq 2)$ to each edge of graph $G$, and the iterated $n$-polygon graphs $τ_n^g(G)$ ($g\geq 0$), is obtained from the iteration $τ_n^g(G)=τ_n(τ_n^{g-1}(G))$, with initial condition $τ_n^0(G)=G$. In this paper, a method for calculating the eigenvalues of normalized Laplacian matrix for graph $τ_n(G)$ is presented if the eigenvalues of normalized Laplacian matrix for graph $G$ is given firstly. Then, the normalized Laplacian spectrums for the graph $τ_n(G)$ and the graphs $τ_n^g(G)$ ($…
We study the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator of a connected graph $Γ$. As is well known, the smallest nontrivial eigenvalue measures how difficult it is to decompose $Γ$ into two large pieces, whereas the largest eigenvalue controls how close $Γ$ is to being bipartite. The smallest eigenvalue can be controlled by the Cheeger constant, and we establish a dual construction that controls the largest eigenvalue. Moreover, we find that the neighborhood graphs $Γ[l]$ of order $l\geq2$ encode important spectral information about $Γ$ itself which we systematically explore. In particular, t…
We consider the normalized Laplace operator for directed graphs with positive and negative edge weights. This generalization of the normalized Laplace operator for undirected graphs is used to characterize directed acyclic graphs. Moreover, we identify certain structural properties of the underlying graph with extremal eigenvalues of the normalized Laplace operator. We prove comparison theorems that establish a relationship between the eigenvalues of directed graphs and certain undirected graphs. This relationship is used to derive eigenvalue estimates for directed graphs. Finally we introduce…
The study and calculation of spectrum of networks can be used to describe networks structure and quantify analysis of networks performance. The fractal Möbius octagonal networks, denoted by $Q_n$, is derived from the inverse identification of the opposite lateral edges of fractal linear octagonal networks. In this paper, the normalized Laplacian spectrum of $Q_n$ is determined by two matrices $\mathcal {L}_A$ and $\mathcal {L}_S$. As an important application of our results, some topological indices (multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, the number of spanning trees) formulas of $Q_n$ are obta…
To some extent, graph evolutionary mechanisms can be explained by its spectra. Here, we are interested in two graph operations, namely, motif (subgraph) doubling and attachment that are biologically relevant. We investigate how these two processes affect the spectrum of the normalized graph Laplacian. A high (algebraic) multiplicity of the eigenvalues $1, 1\pm 0.5, 1\pm \sqrt{0.5}$ and others has been observed in the spectrum of many real networks. We attempt to explain the production of distinct eigenvalues by motif doubling and attachment. Results on the eigenvalue $1$ are discussed separate…
