We propose and analyze surface-plasmon-driven electron spin currents in a thin metallic film. The electron gas in the metal follows the transversally rotating electric fields of the surface plasmons (SPs), which leads to a static magnetization gradient. We consider herein SPs in a thin-film insulator-metal-insulator structure and solve the spin diffusion equation in the presence of a magnetization gradient. The results reveal that the SPs at the metal interfaces generate spin currents in the metallic film. For thinner film, the SPs become strongly hybridized, which increases the magnetization gradient and enhances the spin current. We also discuss how the spin current depends on SP wavelength and the spin-diffusion length of the metal. The polarization of the spin current can be controlled by tuning the wavelength of the SPs and/or the spin diffusion length.
The observation of the electrically tunable and highly confined plasmons in graphene has stimulated the exploration of interesting properties of plasmons in other two dimensional materials. Recently, hyperbolic plasmon resonance modes are observed in exfoliated WTe2 films, a type-II Weyl semimetal with layered structure, providing a platform for the assembly of plasmons with hyperbolicity and exotic topological properties. However, the plasmon modes were observed in relatively thick and small-area films, which restrict the tunability and application for plasmons. Here, large-area (~ cm) WTe2 f…
A hyperbolic plasmonic surface supports highly directional propagating polaritons with extremely large density of states. Such plasmon polaritons have been realized in artificially structured metasurfaces. However, the upper bound of the achievable plasmon wave vector is limited by the structure size, which calls for a natural hyperbolic surface without any structuring. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a natural hyperbolic plasmonic surface based on thin films of WTe2 in the light wavelength range of 16 to 23 microns by far infrared absorption spectroscopy. The topological transition from t…
Plasmonic devices have advanced significantly in the past decade. Being one of the most intriguing devices, plamonic nanolasers plays an important role in biomedicine, chemical sensor, information technology, and optical integrated circuits. However, nanoscale plasmonic devices, particularly in ultraviolet regime, are extremely sensitive to metal and interface quality, which renders the development of ultraviolet plasmonics. Here, by addressing the material issues, we demonstrate a low threshold, high characteristic temperature metal-oxide-semiconductor ZnO nanolaser working at room temperatur…
Metallic nanostructures can support so-called plasma oscillations (plasmons). Plasmons allow for the concentration of the energy from light, down to sizes well below the conventional diffraction limit known from optics. Plasmonics thus allows for a plethora of new optical applications at the nanoscale. In this thesis, we have investigated the optical and plasmonic properties of semi-continuous gold films (also called percolation films). These films consist of complex tortuous fractal patterns on the nanoscale. They are an easy, fast, and scalable method to fabricate metallic nanostructures. We…
Peculiar ring gap modes on the surface of disk close to the metallic thin film are excited in the visible light regime. We apply plasmon hybridization method to illustrate the ring gap modes arising from the interaction between localized disk plasmons and continuum surface plasmons, which cannot be easily excited by the plane wave with polarization parallel to the film interface. In the coupled system, the hybrid modes energy and the surface charge distribution of nanoparticle are investigated both in simulation and hybridization method, showing consistence with each other. The excitation of r…
The evidence of strong coupling between plasmons and molecular excitons for plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) dimers exhibiting ultra-sensitive surface enhanced resonant Raman scattering is the observation of anti-crossing in the coupled resonance. However, it is not easy to experimentally tune plasmon resonance of such dimers for the observation. In this work, we theoretically investigate the anti-crossing properties of the dimers coated by the thin dye films with thicknesses greater than 0.1 nm and gap distances larger than 1.2 nm according to the principles of classical electromagnetism. The plas…
Light-matter momentum transfer in plasmonic materials is theoretically discussed in the framework of plasmonic pressure mechanism taking into account non-equilibrium electron dynamics and thermalization process. We show that our approach explains the experimentally observed relationship between the plasmon-related electromotive force and absorption and allows one to correctly predict the magnitude of the plasmon drag emf in flat metal films. We extend our theory to metal films with modulated profiles and show that the simple relationship between plasmonic energy and momentum transfer holds at …
We theoretically investigate surface plasmon polaritons propagating in the thin-film Weyl semimetals. We show how the properties of surface plasmon polaritons are affected by hybridization between plasmons localized at the two metal-dielectric interfaces. Generally, this hybridization results in new mixed plasmon modes, which are called short-range surface plasmons and long-range surface plasmons, respectively. We calculate dispersion curves of these mixed modes for three principle configurations of the axion vector describing axial anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that the partial lack of …
Despite successful modeling of graphene as a 0.34-nm thick optical film synthesized by exfoliation or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), graphene induced shift of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of gold films has remained controversial. Here we report the resolution of this controversy by developing a clean CVD graphene transfer method and extending Maxwell-Garnet effective medium theory (EMT) to 2D materials. A SPR shift of 0.24 is obtained and it agrees well with 2D EMT in which wrinkled graphene is treated as a 3-nm graphene/air layered composite, in agreement with the average roughness measu…
Finite-thickness effects are analyzed theoretically for the plasma frequency and associated dielectric response function of plasmonic films formed by periodically aligned, infinitely thin, identical metallic cylinders. The plasma frequency of the system is shown to have the unidirectional square-root-of-momentum and quasilinear momentum spatial dispersion for the thick and ultrathin films, respectively. This spatial dispersion and the unidirectional dielectric response nonlocality associated with it can be adjusted not only by the film material composition but also by varying the film thicknes…
Three-dimensional (3D) semimetals have been predicted and demonstrated to have a wide variety of interesting properties associated with its linear energy dispersion. In analogy to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals, such as graphene, Cd3As2, a 3D semimetal, has shown ultra-high mobility, large Fermi velocity, and has been hypothesized to support plasmons at terahertz frequencies. In this work, we demonstrate synthesis of high-quality large-area Cd3As2 thin-films through thermal evaporation as well as the experimental realization of plasmonic structures consisting of periodic arrays of Cd3As…
In cavity quantum electrodynamics, optical emitters that are strongly coupled to cavities give rise to polaritons with characteristics of both the emitters and the cavity excitations. We show that carbon nanotubes can be crystallized into chip-scale, two-dimensionally ordered films and that this new material enables intrinsically ultrastrong emitter-cavity interactions: rather than interacting with external cavities, nanotube excitons couple to the near-infrared plasmon resonances of the nanotubes themselves. Our polycrystalline nanotube films have a hexagonal crystal structure, ~25 nm domains…
We demonstrate plasmon-enhanced photoconduction in Au bowtie nanojunctions containing nanogaps overlaid with an amorphous Ge film. The role of plasmons in the production of nanogap photocurrent is verified by studying the unusual polarization dependence of the photoresponse. With increasing Ge thickness, the nanogap polarization of the photoresponse rotates 90 degrees, indicating a change in the dominant relevant plasmon mode, from the resonant transverse plasmon at low thicknesses to the nonresonant "lightning rod" mode at higher thicknesses. To understand the plasmon response in the presence…
The collective oscillations of surface charges (surface plasmons) induced by light-matter interactions were predicted in the 1950s to influence electrical conduction in 2D noble metals. Primarily two mechanisms were predicted and later by Frohlich which could affect the electron transport in metals; (1) Umklapp electron-electron scattering and (2) attractive interaction between free electrons in transition metals because of screening of the d-band electrons by the s-band electrons. [1] However, there is no experimental evidence to date on how such oscillations might influence the electrical co…
We report on a >100-fold enhancement of Raman responses from Bi2Se3 thin films if laser photon energy switches from 2.33 eV (532 nm) to 1.58 eV (785 nm), which is due to direct optical coupling to Dirac surface states (SS) at the resonance energy of ~1.5 eV (a thickness-independent enhancement) and due to nonlinearly excited Dirac plasmon (a thickness-dependent enhancement). Owing to the direct optical coupling, we observed an in-plane phonon mode of hexagonally arranged Se-atoms associated with a continuous network of Dirac SS. This mode revealed a Fano lineshape for films <15 nm thick, resul…
Random impedance networks are widely used as a model to describe plasmon resonances in disordered metal-dielectric nanocomposites. In order to study thin films, two-dimensional networks are often used despite the fact that such networks correspond to a two-dimensional electrodynamics [J.P. Clerc et al, J. Phys. A 29, 4781 (1996)]. In the present work, we propose a model of two-dimensional systems with three-dimensional Coulomb interaction and show that this model is equivalent to a planar network with long-range capacitive connections between sites. In a case of a metal film, we get a known di…
Vertical nanowires facilitate an innovative mechanism to channel the optical field in the orthogonal direction and act as a nanoscale light source. Subwavelength, vertically oriented nanowire platforms, both of plasmonic and semiconducting variety can facilitate interesting far field emission profiles and potentially carry orbital angular momentum states. Motivated by these prospects, in this letter, we show how a hybrid plasmonic - organic platform can be harnessed to engineer far field radiation. The system that we have employed is an organic nanowire made of diaminoanthroquinone grown on a …
Raman measurements of a Fano-type surface phonon mode associated with Dirac surface states (SS) in Bi2Se3 topological insulator thin films allowed an unambiguous determination of the electron-phonon coupling strength in Dirac SS as a function of film thickness ranging from 2 to 40 nm. A non-monotonic enhancement of the electron-phonon coupling strength with maximum for the 8 - 10 nm thick films was observed. The non-monotonicity is suggested to originate from plasmon-phonon coupling which enhances electron-phonon coupling when free carrier density in Dirac SS increases with decreasing film thi…
Light-matter interaction at the atomic scale rules fundamental phenomena such as photoemission and lasing, while enabling basic everyday technologies, including photovoltaics and optical communications. In this context, plasmons --the collective electron oscillations in conducting materials-- are important because they allow manipulating optical fields at the nanoscale. The advent of graphene and other two-dimensional crystals has pushed plasmons down to genuinely atomic dimensions, displaying appealing properties such as a large electrical tunability. However, plasmons in these materials are …
Using ultrafast pump-probe reflectivity with 3.1 eV pump and coherent white light probe (1.1 to 2.6 eV), we show that graphene on gold nanostructures exhibits a strong coupling to the plasmonic resonances of the ordered lattice hole array, thus injecting a high density of hot carriers in graphene through plasmons. The system being studied is single-layer graphene on ultrathin film of gold with periodic arrangements of holes showing anomalous transmission. A comparison is made with gold film with and without hole array. By selectively probing transient carrier dynamics in the spectral regions c…
Low-energy collective electronic excitations exhibiting sound-like linear dispersion have been intensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for a long time. However, coherent acoustic plasmon modes appearing in time-domain measurements are rarely observed due to Landau damping by the single-particle continua. Here we report on the observation of coherent acoustic Dirac plasmon (CADP) modes excited in indirectly (electrostatically) opposite-surface coupled films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. Using transient second harmonic generation, a technique capable of independently mon…
The propagation of surface plasmon polaritons in thin films of topological insulators is studied. The materials considered are second generation three dimensional topological insulators Bi$_2$Se$_3$, Bi$_2$Te$_3$, and Sb$_2$Te$_3$. Dispersion relations and propagation lengths are estimated numerically, taking into account the variation of bulk dielectric functions of topological insulators as well as substrate using the Drude-Lorentz model. Key factors affecting propagation length are identified and ways to modify the dispersion relations are suggested. The explanation of the apparent discrepa…
The physics of electrons, photons, and their plasmonic interactions changes greatly when one or more dimensions are reduced down to the nanometer scale. For example, graphene shows unique electrical, optical, and plasmonic properties, which are tunable through gating or chemical doping. Similarly, ultrathin metal films (UTMFs) down to atomic thickness can possess new quantum optical effects, peculiar dielectric properties, and predicted strong plasmons. However, truly two-dimensional plasmonics in metals has so far elusive because of the difficulty in producing large areas of sufficiently thin…
The field of plasmonics seeks to find materials with an intensive plasmon (large plasmon pole weight) with low Landau, phonon and other losses (small decay width). In this paper we propose a new class of materials that show exceptionally good plasmonic properties. These materials consist of van der Waals stacked 'plasmon active' layers (atomically thin metallic layers) and 'supporting' layers (atomically thin wide band gap insulating layers). One such material that can be experimentally realized - lithium intercalated hexagonal boron-nitride is studied in detail. We show that its 2D plasmon in…
Self-organized monocrystalline Au nanoparticles with potential applications in plasmonics are grown in a SrTiO$_3$ matrix by a novel two-step deposition process. The crystalline preferred orientation of these Au nanoparticles is investigated by synchrotron hard x-ray diffraction. Nanoparticles preferentially align with the (111) direction along the substrate normal (001), whereas two in-plane orientations are found with $[110]_{SrTiO_3} \: || \: [110]_{Au}$ and $[100]_{SrTiO_3} \: || \: [110]_{Au}$. Additionally, a smaller diffraction signal from nanoparticles with the (001) direction parallel…
We study theoretically the in-plane electromagnetic response and the exciton-plasmon interactions for an experimentally feasible carbon nanotube (CN) film systems composed of parallel aligned periodic semiconducting CN arrays embedded in an ultrathin finite-thickness dielectric. For homogeneous single-CN films, the intertube coupling and thermal broadening bring the exciton and interband plasmon resonances closer together. They can even overlap due to the inhomogeneous broadening for films composed of array mixtures with a slight CN diameter distribution. In such systems the real part of the r…
Excitation of multiple surface plasmon-polaritons(SPPs) by an equichiral sculptured thin film with a metal layer defect was studied theoretically in the Sarid configuration, using the transfer matrix method. Multiple SPP modes were distinguished from waveguide modes in optical absorption for p- polarized plane wave. The degree of localization of multiple SPP waves was investigated by calculation of the time averaged Poynting vector. The results showed that the long-range and short-range SPP waves can simultaneously be excited at both interfaces of metal core in this proposed structure which ma…
Filming and controlling plasmons at buried interfaces with nanometer (nm) and femtosecond (fs) resolution has yet to be achieved and is critical for next generation plasmonic/electronic devices. In this work, we use light to excite and shape a plasmonic interference pattern at a buried metal-dielectric interface in a nanostructured thin film. Plasmons are launched from a photoexcited array of nanocavities and their propagation is filmed via photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). The resulting movie directly captures the plasmon dynamics, allowing quantification of their group v…
We study plasmon propagation on a metallic two-dimensional surface partially coated with a thin film of anomalous-Hall material. The resulting three regions, separated by two sharp interfaces, are characterised by different Hall conductivities but identical normal conductivities. A single bound mode is found, which can localise to either interface and has an asymmetric potential profile across the region. For propagating modes, we calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients through the magnetic region. We find Airy transmission patterns with sharp maxima and minima as a function of …
The use of graphene in surface plasmon resonance sensors, covering a metallic (plasmonic) film, has a number of demonstrated advantages, such protecting the film against corrosion/oxidation and facilitating the introduction of functional groups for selective sensing. Recently, a number of works have claimed that few-layer graphene can also increase the sensitivity of the sensor. However, graphene was treated as an isotropic thin film, with an out-of-plane refractive index that is identical to the in-plane index. Here, we critically examine the role of single and few layers of graphene in the s…
We study strongly confined plasmons in ultrathin gold and silver films by simulating electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Plasmon dispersion relations are directly retrieved from the energy- and momentum-resolved loss probability under normal incidence conditions, whereas they can also be inferred for aloof parallel beam trajectories from the evolution of the plasmon features in the resulting loss spectra as we vary the impinging electron energy. We find good agreement between nonlocal quantum-mechanical simulations based on the random-phase approximation and a local classical dielectric …
Plasmonic color printing with semicontinuous metal films is a lithography-free, non-fading, and environment-friendly method of generation of bright colors. Such films are comprised of metal nanoparticles, which resonate at different wavelengths upon light illumination depending on the size and shape of the nanoparticles. To achieve an experimentally demonstrated structure that was optimized in terms of broader color range and increased stability, variable Ag semicontinuous metal films were deposited on a metallic mirror with a sub-wavelength-thick dielectric spacer. Femtosecond laser post-proc…
