We report on the resonant coupling between localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in nanostructured Ag films, and an adsorbed monolayer of Rhodamine 6G dye. Hybridization of the plasmons and molecular excitons creates new coupled polaritonic modes, which have been tuned by varying the LSPR wavelength. The resulting polariton dispersion curve shows an anticrossing behavior which is very well fit by a simple coupled-oscillator Hamiltonian, giving a giant Rabi-splitting energy of ~400 meV. The strength of this coupling is shown to be proportional to the square root of the molecular density. The Raman spectra of R6G on these films show an enhancement of many orders of magnitude due to surface enhanced scattering mechanisms; we find a maximum signal when a polariton mode lies in the middle of the Stokes shifted emission band.
Electrically tunable graphene plasmons are anticipated to enable strong light-matter interactions with resonant quantum emitters. However, plasmon resonances in graphene are typically limited to infrared frequencies, below those of optical excitations in robust quantum light sources and many biologically interesting molecules. Here we propose to utilize near fields generated by the plasmon-assisted nonlinear optical response of nanostructured graphene to resonantly couple with proximal quantum emitters operating in the near-infrared. We show that the nonlinear near-field produced by a graphene…
We theoretically investigate gap plasmons for two silver nanocubes coupled through a molecular tunnel junction. In absence of tunneling, the red-shift of the bonding mode saturates with decreasing gap distance. Tunneling at small gap distances leads to a damping and slight blue-shift of the bonding mode, but no low-energy charge transfer plasmon mode appears in the spectra. This finding is in stark contrast to recent work of Tan et al. [Science 343, 1496 (2014)].
We have investigated the plasmonic enhancement of the radiation field at various nanostructured multilayer devices, that may be applied in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We apply an image dipole method to describe the effect of surface morphology on the field enhancement in a quasistatic limit. In particular, we compare the performance of a nanostructured silver surface and a layered silver-gold hybrid device. It is found that localized surface plasmon states (LSP) provide a high field enhancement in silver-gold hybrid devices, where symmetry breaking due to surface-defects is a supporti…
Raza et al. recently observed the extraordinarily large energy blueshifts of localized surface plasmon resonances and additional surface plasmon resonances in silver nanoparticles encapsulated in silicon nitride, which are not fully understood yet. By using the quantum model consisting of two subsystems respectively for describing the center of mass and intrinsic motions of conduction electrons of a metallic nanosphere and a coupling occurred between the center of mass and conduction electrons outside the metallic nanosphere, we firstly deduced the general energy and line broadening size-depen…
Light-matter interaction at the atomic scale rules fundamental phenomena such as photoemission and lasing, while enabling basic everyday technologies, including photovoltaics and optical communications. In this context, plasmons --the collective electron oscillations in conducting materials-- are important because they allow manipulating optical fields at the nanoscale. The advent of graphene and other two-dimensional crystals has pushed plasmons down to genuinely atomic dimensions, displaying appealing properties such as a large electrical tunability. However, plasmons in these materials are …
Localized plasmons in metallic nanostructures have been widely used to enhance nonlinear optical effects due to their ability to concentrate and enhance light down to extreme-subwavelength scales. As alternatives to noble metal nanoparticles, graphene nanostructures can host long-lived plasmons that efficiently couple to light and are actively tunable via electrical doping. Here we show that doped graphene nanoislands present unique opportunities for enhancing nonlinear optical wave-mixing processes between two externally applied optical fields at the nanoscale. These small islands can support…
We report the enhancement of the optical second harmonic signal in non-centrosymmetric semiconductor CdS quantum dots, when they are placed in close contact with isolated silver nanoparticles. The intensity enhancement is about 1000. We also show that the enhancement increases when the incoming laser frequency $ω$ is tuned toward the spectral position of the silver plasmon at $2ω$, proving that the silver nanoparticle modifies the nonlinear emission.
Plasmonic circuitry is considered as a promising solution-effective technology for miniaturizing and integrating the next generation of optical nano-devices. A key element is the shared metal network between electrical and optical information enabling an efficient hetero-integration of an electronic control layer and a plasmonic data link. Here, we investigate to what extend surface plasmons and current-carrying electrons interfere in such a shared circuitry. By synchronously recording surface plasmon propagation and electrical output characteristics of single chemically-synthesized silver nan…
We have demonstrated surface-plasmon induced change in spontaneous emission rate in the ultraviolet regime at ~ 375-380 nm, using AlN/GaN quantum dots (QD). Using time-resolved and continuous-wave photoluminescence measurements, the recombination rate in AlN/GaN QD is shown to be enhanced when spontaneous emission is resonantly coupled to a metal-surface plasmon mode. The exciton recombination process via Ag-surface plasmon modes is observed to be as much as 3-7 times faster than in normal QD spontaneous emission and depends strongly on the emission wavelength and silver thickness.
We demonstrate propagation of plasmons in single crystalline silver nanostructures fabricated using a combination of a bottom-up and a top-down approach. Silver nanoplates of thickness around 65 nm and a surface area of about 100 μm^2 are made using a wet chemical method. Silver nanotips and nanowires are then sculptured by focused ion beam milling. The plasmons are excited by using the fluorescence from the redeposited silver clusters during the milling process. Propagation of plasmons in the nanowires is observed in the visible spectral region. We also observe a cavity effect by measuring th…
We present an electron energy loss study using energy filtered TEM of spatially resolved surface plasmon excitations on a silver nanorod of aspect ratio 14.2 resting on a 30 nm thick silicon nitride membrane. Our results show that the excitation is quantized as resonant modes whose intensity maxima vary along the nanorod's length and whose wavelength becomes compressed towards the ends of the nanorod. Theoretical calculations modelling the surface plasmon response of the silver nanorod-silicon nitride system show the importance of including retardation and substrate effects in order to describ…
Plasmonic nanoparticles hold great promise as photon handling elements and as channels for coherent transfer of energy and information in future all-optical computing devices. Coherent energy oscillations between two spatially separated plasmonic entities via a virtual middle state exemplify electron-based population transfer, but their realization requires precise nanoscale positioning of heterogeneous particles. Here, we show the assembly and optical analysis of a triple particle system consisting of two gold nanoparticles with an inter-spaced silver island. We observe strong plasmonic coupl…
Networks of solution-processed nanomaterials are important for multiple applications in electronics, sensing and energy storage/generation. While it is known that network morphology plays a dominant role in determining the physical properties of printed networks, it remains difficult to quantify network structure. Here, we utilise FIB-SEM nanotomography to characterise the morphology of nanostructured networks. Nanometer-resolution 3D-images were obtained from printed networks of graphene nanosheets of various sizes, as well as networks of WS2 nanosheets, silver nanosheets and silver nanowires…
The possibility of strong coupling between a single molecule and surface plasmons is analyzed on the basis of a microscopic classical description. It is predicted that strong single molecule - plasmon coupling can happen for a silver nanoparticle only in the UV range where the real part of the dielectric function of silver approaches a value of -1. A critical view is taken on an interpretation of spectroscopic data of composite layers of dye molecules and a metal film in terms of single molecule-plasmon coupling in a Kretschman configuration in some recent publications. It is shown that experi…
Plasmonics has established itself as a branch of physics which promises to revolutionize data processing, improve photovoltaics, increase sensitivity of bio-detection. A widespread use of plasmonic devices is notably hindered (in addition to high losses) by the absence of stable and inexpensive metal films suitable for plasmonic applications. This may seem surprising given the number of metal compounds to choose from. Unfortunately, most of them either exhibit a strong damping of surface plasmons or easily oxidize and corrode. To this end, there has been continuous search for alternative plasm…
We study the surface plasmon modes in a silver double-nanowire system by employing the eigenmode analysis approach based on the finite element method. Calculated dispersion relations, surface charge distributions, field patterns and propagation lengths of ten lowest energy plasmon modes in the system are presented. These ten modes are categorized into three groups because they are found to originate from the monopole-monopole, dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole hybridizations between the two wires, respectively. Interestingly, in addition to the well studied gap mode (mode 1), the other m…
In electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) of individual silver nanoparticles encapsulated in silicon nitride, we observe besides the usual dipole resonance an additional surface plasmon (SP) resonance corresponding to higher angular momenta. We even observe both resonances for nanoparticle radii as small as 4 nm, where previously only the dipole resonance was assumed to play a role. Electron beams positioned outside of the particles mostly excite the dipole mode, but the higher-order resonance can even dominate the dipole peak when exciting at the particle surface, the usual choice for maxim…
Assuming that the resonant surface plasmons on a spherical nanoparticle is formed by standing waves of two counter-propagating surface plasmon waves along the surface, by using Mie theory simulation, we find that the dispersions of surface plasmon resonant modes supported by silver nanospheres match that of the surface plasmons on a semi-infinite medium-silver interface very well. This suggests that the resonant surface plasmons of a metal nanosphere can be treated as a propagating surface plasmon wave.
Photo-bolometric effect is critically important in optoelectronic structures and devices employing metallic electrodes with nanoscale features due to heating caused by the plasmonic field enhancement. One peculiar case is individual silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and their networks. Ag NW-networks exhibit excellent thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties, providing a simple yet reliable alternative to common flexible transparent electrode materials used in optoelectronic devices. To date there have been no reports on the photoresponse of Ag NWs. In this work, we show that a single Ag NW and …
Using the finite element method we investigate plasmon-mediated transmission in a periodically modulated metal-insulator-metal (MIM) grating. We compute the eigenmodes of a silver-silica-silver conformal coating atop an array of close-packed silica rods, and correlate them with extinction and transmission characteristics of the structure. We observe efficient coupling of impinging plane-waves to gap plasmon modes, allowing control of both bandwidth and intensity of the transmitted radiation.
The evidence of strong coupling between plasmons and molecular excitons for plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) dimers exhibiting ultra-sensitive surface enhanced resonant Raman scattering is the observation of anti-crossing in the coupled resonance. However, it is not easy to experimentally tune plasmon resonance of such dimers for the observation. In this work, we theoretically investigate the anti-crossing properties of the dimers coated by the thin dye films with thicknesses greater than 0.1 nm and gap distances larger than 1.2 nm according to the principles of classical electromagnetism. The plas…
We report on the observation of coupling a single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in a nanodiamond crystal to a propagating plasmonic mode of silver nanowires. The nanocrystal is placed either near to the apex of a single silver nanowire or in the gap between two end-to-end aligned silver nanowires. We observe an enhancement of the NV-centers' decay rate in both cases as a result of the coupling to the plasmons. The devices are nano-assembled with a scanning probe technique. Through simulations, we show that end-to-end aligned silver nanowires can be used as a controllable splitter for emission f…
We study strongly confined plasmons in ultrathin gold and silver films by simulating electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Plasmon dispersion relations are directly retrieved from the energy- and momentum-resolved loss probability under normal incidence conditions, whereas they can also be inferred for aloof parallel beam trajectories from the evolution of the plasmon features in the resulting loss spectra as we vary the impinging electron energy. We find good agreement between nonlocal quantum-mechanical simulations based on the random-phase approximation and a local classical dielectric …
Anisotropic nanostructured porous Pd films are fabricated using oblique angle deposition in vacuum on a glass substrate. They display a dichroic response, due to localised surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) within the nanoparticles forming the film, dependent on the incident light polarisation. Ultrasensitive hydrogen sensing is reached by using these films in conjunction with a differential optical technique derived from the reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy. The evolution of the samples optical responses is monitored during the formation of Pd hydride in both the dilute alpha-phase and the …
The surface plasmon oscillations spectra in noble metal nanoparticles - rods and spheroids embedded in a host matrix is analyzed theoretically. The important role of - electrons in formation of surface plasmon resonances is shown. A simple model is developed to describe the surface plasmons in nanorods. It is shown, that both for nanorods and spheroids the surface plasmon resonance wavelengths are linearly dependent on aspect ratios of these particles. The results of calculations are compared with experimental data for gold and silver particles and excellent agreement is demonstrated.
Electronic and optical properties of silver clusters were calculated using two different \textit{ab initio} approaches: 1) based on all-electron full-potential linearized-augmented plane-wave method and 2) local basis function pseudopotential approach. Agreement is found between the two methods for small and intermediate sized clusters for which the former method is limited due to its all-electron formulation. The latter, due to non-periodic boundary conditions, is the more natural approach to simulate small clusters. The effect of cluster size is then explored using the local basis function a…
Metasurfaces offer unconventional control of light to shape optical wavefronts within two-dimensional nanoscale structures. A nanostructured metallic thin film can establish an exclusive relationship between its surface structure and optical spectrum. The unique structural features, continuous metal coverage and smooth surface profile, can help obtain highly coherent plasmonic resonances that strongly depend on the structural parameters of nanostructured surfaces. It allows us to encode optical responses and information into a structural format on a variety of materials. We show experimentally…
Coupling of an atom-like emitter to surface plasmons provides a path toward significant optical nonlinearity, which is essential in quantum information processing and quantum networks. A large coupling strength requires nanometer-scale positioning accuracy of the emitter near the surface of the plasmonic structure, which is challenging. We demonstrate the coupling of single localized defects in a tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayer self-aligned to the surface plasmon mode of a silver nanowire. The silver nanowire induces a strain gradient on the monolayer at the overlapping area, leading to t…
We study the surface plasmon (SP) resonance energy of isolated spherical Ag nanoparticles dispersed on a silicon nitride substrate in the diameter range 3.5-26 nm with monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy. A significant blueshift of the SP resonance energy of 0.5 eV is measured when the particle size decreases from 26 down to 3.5 nm. We interpret the observed blueshift using three models for a metallic sphere embedded in homogeneous background material: a classical Drude model with a homogeneous electron density profile in the metal, a semiclassical model corrected for an inhomogene…
We report the experimental observation of the transverse spin and associated spin-momentum locking of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited in a plasmonic single crystalline silver nanowire (AgNW). In contrast to the SPPs excited in metal films, the electromagnetic field components of the evanescent SPP mode propagating along the long axis ($x$ axis) of the NW can decay along two longitudinal planes ($x$-$y$ and $x$-$z$ planes), resulting in two orthogonal transverse spin components ($s_z$ and $s_y$). Analysis of the opposite circular polarization components of the decaying SPP mode signal…
We present a simple method to prove the presence of an organic shell around silver nanoparticles. This method is based on the comparison between optical extinction measurements of isolated nanoparticles and Mie calculations predicting the expected wavelength of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of the nanoparticles with and without the presence of an organic layer. This method was applied to silver nanoparticles which seemed to be well protected from oxidation. Further experimental characterization via Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) measurements allowed to identify this prote…
Using time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, the recombination rate in an In$_{0.18}$Ga$_{0.82}$N/GaN quantum well (QW) is shown to be greatly enhanced when spontaneous emission is resonantly coupled to a silver surface plasmon. The rate of enhanced spontaneous emission into the surface plasmon was as much as 92 times faster than normal QW spontaneous emission. A calculation, based on Fermi's golden rule, reveals the enhancement is very sensitive to silver thickness and indicates even greater enhancements are possible for QWs placed closer to the surface metal coating.

Plasmonic color printing with semicontinuous metal films is a lithography-free, non-fading, and environment-friendly method of generation of bright colors. Such films are comprised of metal nanoparticles, which resonate at different wavelengths upon light illumination depending on the size and shape of the nanoparticles. To achieve an experimentally demonstrated structure that was optimized in terms of broader color range and increased stability, variable Ag semicontinuous metal films were deposited on a metallic mirror with a sub-wavelength-thick dielectric spacer. Femtosecond laser post-proc…
We demonstrate the coupling of a single nitrogen vacancy center in a nanodiamond to propagating plasmonic modes of mechanically etched silver nanowires. The mechanical etch is performed on single crystalline silver nanoplates by the tip of an atomic force microscope cantilever to produce wires with pre-designed lengths. We show that single plasmon propgation can be obtained in these wires, thus making these structures a platform for quantum information processing.
We study the blueshift of the surface plasmon (SP) resonance energy of isolated Ag nanoparticles with decreasing particle diameter, which we recently measured using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). As the particle diameter decreases from 26 down to 3.5 nm, a large blueshift of 0.5 eV of the SP resonance energy is observed. In this paper, we base our theoretical interpretation of our experimental findings on the nonlocal hydrodynamic model, and compare the effect of the substrate on the SP resonance energy to the approach of an effective homogeneous background permittivity. We derive t…
We investigate the optical response of a system consisting of periodic silver V-grooves interacting with quantum emitters. Two surface plasmon-polariton resonances are identified in the reflection spectrum of bare silver grooves, with the intensity of one resonance being localized near the bottom of the groove and that of the other resonance being distributed throughout the entire groove. The linear response of the hybrid silver-emitter system is thoroughly analyzed by considering the coupling between surface plasmon polaritons and emitters as the geometry of the grooves and the spatial distri…
Coupled surface plasmon/phonon polaritons and hyperbolic modes are known to enhance radiative transport across nanometer vacuum gaps but usually require identical materials. It becomes crucial to achieve strong near-field energy transfer between dissimilar materials for applications like near-field thermophotovoltaic and thermal rectification. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate extraordinary near-field radiative transport between a nanostructured metamaterial emitter and a graphene-covered planar receiver. Strong near-field coupling with two orders of magnitude enhancement in the spect…
We image the field enhancement at Ag nanostructures using femtosecond laser pulses with a center wavelength of 1.55 micrometer. Imaging is based on non-linear photoemission observed in a photoemission electron microscope (PEEM). The images are directly compared to ultra violet PEEM and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging of the same structures. Further, we have carried out atomic scale scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on the same type of Ag nanostructures and on the Au substrate. Measuring the photoelectron spectrum from individual Ag particles shows a larger contribution from higher…
Photoexcitation and shaping of a propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) on silver and gold microstructures are well established and lead to the discovery of the plasmonic spin-Hall effect recently. Whereas silver is often the material of choice due to its exceptional low plasma frequency and weak damping, similar observations have not been reported for ferromagnetic metals. In this work, we report on propagating SPPs on Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ microstructures imaged by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) in combination with a tunable femtosecond laser system at MHz repetition rate. Circul…
We investigate the propagation of surface plasmons (SPPs) in a thin layer of copper surrounded by copper oxide Cu$_2$O. It is shown that particularly strong excitons in Cu$_2$O can have considerable impact on plasmon propagation, providing many opportunities for plasmon-exciton and plasmon-plasmon interactions. It is demonstrated that by the use of sufficiently thin metal layer, one can excite the so-called long range plasmons (LRSPPs) which can overcome the inherently high ohmic losses of Cu as compared to usual plasmonic metals such as silver. Analytical results are confirmed by numerical ca…
Coupling single photon emitters to surface plasmons provides a versatile ground for on chip quantum photonics. However, achieving good coupling efficiency requires precise alignment of both the position and dipole orientation of the emitter relative to the plasmonic mode. We demonstrate coupling of single emitters in the 2-D semiconductor, WSe2 self-aligned with propagating surface plasmon polaritons in silver-air-silver, metal-insulator-metal waveguides. The waveguide produces strain induced defects in the monolayer which are close to the surface plasmon mode with favorable dipole orientation…
Realizing strong light-matter interactions between individual 2-level systems and resonating cavities in atomic and solid state systems opens up possibilities to study optical nonlinearities on a single photon level, which can be useful for future quantum information processing networks. However, these efforts have been hampered by the unfavorable experimental conditions, such as cryogenic temperatures and ultrahigh vacuum, required to study such systems and phenomena. Although several attempts to realize strong light-matter interactions at room-temperature using so-called plasmon resonances h…
We have analyzed analytically the Faraday rotation of an electromagnetic wave for magnetoactive thin metallic film with a nanostructured surface profile. Periodical as well as random surface profiles were considered. The plasmon contribution to the Faraday angle was studied. For periodical grating case, we have shown that the maximum of rotation angle is achieved when surface plasmon wave number coincides with one of the wave numbers of the inverse lattice. Enhancement of the Faraday angle at plasmonic band edges is predicted. In the case of random surface profile, it is shown that the diffusi…
Graphene is known to possess strong optical nonlinearity. Its nonlinear response can be further enhanced by graphene plasmons. Here, we report a novel nonlinear electro-absorption effect observed in nanostructured graphene due to excitation of graphene plasmons. We experimentally detect and theoretically explain enhanced nonlinear mixing of near-infrared and mid-infrared light in arrays of graphene nanoribbons. Strong compression of light by graphene plasmons implies that the effect is non-local in nature and orders of magnitude larger than the conventional local graphene nonlinearity. The eff…
