In a slab geometry with large surface-to-bulk ratio, topological surface states such as Fermi arcs for Weyl or Dirac semimetals may dominate their low-energy properties. We investigate the collective charge oscillations in such systems, finding striking differences between Weyl and conventional electronic systems. Our results, obtained analytically and verified numerically, predict that the Weyl semimetal thin-film host a single $ω\propto \sqrt{q}$ plasmon mode, that results from collective, anti-symmetric charge oscillations of between the two surfaces, in stark contrast to conventional 2D bi-layers as well as Dirac semimetals with Fermi arcs, which support anti-symmetric acoustic modes along with a symmetric optical mode. These modes lie in the gap of the particle-hole continuum and are thus spectroscopically observable and potentially useful in plasmonic applications.
We theoretically investigate surface plasmon polaritons propagating in the thin-film Weyl semimetals. We show how the properties of surface plasmon polaritons are affected by hybridization between plasmons localized at the two metal-dielectric interfaces. Generally, this hybridization results in new mixed plasmon modes, which are called short-range surface plasmons and long-range surface plasmons, respectively. We calculate dispersion curves of these mixed modes for three principle configurations of the axion vector describing axial anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that the partial lack of …
We systematically investigate the properties of bulk, surface and edge plasmons in Weyl semimetals in presence of a magnetic field. It is found that unidirectional plasmons with different properties exist on different surfaces, which is in consistent with the nontrivial topology of the three-dimensional (3D) bulk plasmons. These novel plasmons possess momentum-location lock and may travel between surfaces. The anomalous Hall conductivity brings about abundant anisotropic plasmon dispersions, from linear to parabolic or even hyperbolic bands. With the help of a semiclassical picture for the for…
Weyl semimetals have recently attracted extensive attention due to their anomalous band structure manifested by topological properties that lead to some unusual and unique physical properties. We investigate novel features of surface plasmon polaritons in a slot waveguide comprised from two semi-infinite Weyl semimetals. We consider symmetric Voigt-Voigt and Faraday-Faraday configurations for plasmon polaritons in two interfaces of waveguide and show that the resulting dispersion is symmetric and the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons is bidirectional. We introduce exotic and novel asym…
Surface plasmon polaritons in a strained slab of a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry are investigated. It is found that the strain-induced axial gauge field reduces frequencies of these collective modes for intermediate values of the wave vector. Depending on the relative orientation of the separation of Weyl nodes in momentum space, the surface normal, and the direction of propagation, the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons could be nonreciprocal even in a thin slab. In addition, strain-induced axial gauge fields can significantly affect the localization propert…
In the recently discovered Weyl semimetals, the Fermi surface may feature disjoint, open segments -- the so-called Fermi arcs -- associated with topological states bound to exposed crystal surfaces. Here we show that the collective dynamics of electrons near such surfaces sharply departs from that of a conventional three-dimensional metal. In magnetic systems with broken time reversal symmetry, the resulting Fermi arc plasmons (FAPs) are chiral, with dispersion relations featuring open, hyperbolic constant frequency contours. As a result, a large range of surface plasmon wave vectors can be su…
By means of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we investigate the low-energy excitation spectrum of transition-metal monopnictides hosting Weyl fermions. We observe gapped plasmonic modes in (001)-oriented surfaces of single crystals of NbAs and TaAs at 66 and 68 meV, respectively. Our findings are consistent with theory and we estimate an effective Coulomb interaction strength $α_{\rm eff}\approx0.41$ for both samples. We also demonstrate that the modification of the surface of transition-metal monopnictides by the adsorption of chemical species (in our case, oxygen and hydroc…
The existence of the magnetostatic surface spin waves in ferromagnets, known as Damon-Eshbach mode, was recently demonstrated to originate from the topology of the dipole-dipole interaction. In this work, we study the topological characteristics of magnons in easy-axis antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy. The dipolar spin waves are found to be, driven by the dipole-dipole interaction, in a topological nodal-line semimetal phase, which hosts Damon-Eshbach-type surface modes due to the bulk-edge correspondence. The long wavelength character of dipolar spin waves makes our proposal valid fo…
Massless chiral fermions emergent in inversion symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals (WSMs) reside in the vicinity of multiple low symmetry nodes and thus acquire strongly anisotropic dispersion. We investigate the longitudinal electromagnetic modes of two-component degenerate Weyl plasma relevant to the realistic band structure of type-I WSM. We show that the actual spectrum of three dimensional collective density excitations in TaAs family of WSM is gaples due to emergence of acoustic plasmons corresponding to out-of-phase oscillations of the plasma components. These modes exist around the [001]…
We study the collective charge-density modes (plasmons) of two-dimensional nonsymmorphic Dirac semimetals, within the random-phase approximation (RPA) in presence of Coulomb interaction. Without loss of generality, we consider a system in a two-dimensional square-lattice, based on the model originally predicted by Young and Kane (https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.115.126803), where the non-interacting band-structure consists of three band-touching points, near which the electronic states follow Dirac equations. Two of these Dirac nodes, at the momentum points $X_1$ and $X_2$, are anisotropic…
We predict the existence of a novel long-lived gapless plasmon mode in a type-II Dirac semimetal (DSM). This gapless mode arises from the out-of-phase oscillations of the density fluctuations in the electron and the hole pockets of a type-II DSM. It originates beyond a critical wave-vector along the direction of the tilt axis, owing to the momentum separation of the electron and hole pockets. A similar out-of-phase plasmon mode arises in other multi-component charged fluids as well, but generally it is Landau damped and lies within the particle-hole continuum. In the case of a type-II DSM, the…
The surface of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) displays Fermi arcs, i.e. disjoint segments of a two-dimensional Fermi contour. We present a quantum-mechanical non-local theory of chiral Fermi arc plasmons in WSMs with broken time-reversal symmetry. These are collective excitations constructed from topological Fermi arc and bulk electron states and arising from electron-electron interactions, which are treated in the realm of the random phase approximation. Our theory includes quantum effects associated with the penetration of the Fermi arc surface states into the bulk and dissipation, which is intrinsi…
The peculiar topological properties of Weyl semimetals (WSMs) lead to unusual and unique optical properties. We investigate novel features of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a slot waveguide comprised of two semi-infinite WSMs with different symmetries, one with broken time reversal symmetry (TRS) and the other with broken inversion symmetry. We consider Voigt and Faraday configurations for SPPs at the interface of the WSM with broken TRS. We demonstrate that in the Voigt configuration this structure supports unidirectional SPP modes above the bulk plasmon frequency while it shows a non-r…
Weyl semimetals are one kind of three-dimensional gapless semimetal with nontrivial topology in the momentum space. The chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals manifests as a charge imbalance between the Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities induced by parallel electric and magnetic fields. We investigate the chiral anomaly effect on the plasmon mode in both intrinsic and doped Weyl semimetals within the random phase approximation. We prove that the chiral anomaly gives rise to a different plasmon mode in intrinsic Weyl semimetals. We also find the chiral anomaly leads to some exotic properties in the …
We consider theoretically surface plasmon polaritons in Weyl semimetals. These materials contain pairs of band touching points - Weyl nodes - with a chiral topological charge, which induces an optical anisotropy and anomalous transport through the chiral anomaly. We show that these effects, which are not present in ordinary metals, have a direct fundamental manifestation in the surface plasmon dispersion. The retarded Weyl surface plasmon dispersion depends on the separation of the Weyl nodes in energy and momentum space. For Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry, the distance bet…
Smooth interfaces of topological systems are known to host massive surface states along with the topologically protected chiral one. We show that in Weyl semimetals these massive states, along with the chiral Fermi arc, strongly alter the form of the Fermi-arc plasmon, Most saliently, they yield further collective plasmonic modes that are absent in a conventional interfaces. The plasmon modes are completely anisotropic as a consequence of the underlying anisotropy in the surface model and expected to have a clear-cut experimental signature, e.g. in electron-energy loss spectroscopy.
We investigate plasmon-emitter interactions in a nanoparticle-on-a-mirror cavity. We consider two different sorts of emitters, those that sustain dipolar transitions, and those hosting only quadrupolar, dipole-inactive, excitons. By means of a fully analytical two-dimensional transformation optics approach, we calculate the light-matter coupling strengths for the full plasmonic spectrum supported by the nanocavity. We reveal the impact of finite-size effects in the exciton charge distribution and describe the population dynamics in a spontaneous emission configuration. Pushing our model beyond…
We investigate spontaneous entanglement of two qubits mediated by nonreciprocal surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a Weyl semimetal. In the absence of external magnetic fields, the topology of the Weyl semimetal even gives rise to nonreciprocal SPPs that are topologically protected and reside inside the photonic gap. We utilize this nonreciprocal SPP as a mediator of entanglement of two spatially-separated qubits. Our two main findings are: (1) the nonreciprocal SPP gives better quantum entanglement than the reciprocal one, and (2) the achieved entanglement is sufficiently long-lived compare…
In many realistic topological materials, more than one kind of fermions contribute to the electronic bands crossing the Fermi level, leading to various novel phenomena. Here, using momentum-resolved inelastic electron scattering, we investigate the plasmons and their evolution across the phase transition in a type-II Weyl Semimetal MoTe$_2$, in which both Weyl fermions and trivial nonrelativistic fermions contribute to the Fermi surface in the Td phase. One plasmon mode in the 1T' phase at high temperature and two plasmon modes in the topological T$_d$ phase at low temperature are observed. Co…
An exotic anomalous plasmon mode is found in strained Weyl semimetals utilizing the topological Landau Fermi liquid and chiral kinetic theories, in which quasiparticle interactions are modeled by long-range Coulomb and residual short-range interactions. The gapped collective mode is derived from the dynamical charge pumping between the bulk and the surface and behaves like $k_{\rm F}^{-1}$. The charge oscillations are accurately determined by the coupling between the induced electric field and the background pseudofields. This novel mode unidirectionally disperses along the pseudomagnetic fiel…
The recent experimental discovery of ${\rm Cd_3 As_2}$ and ${\rm Na_3 Bi}$ Dirac semimetals enables the study of the properties of chiral quasi-particles in three spatial dimensions. As demonstrated by photoemission, Dirac semimetals are characterized by a linear dispersion relation for fermion quasi-particles, and thus represent three dimensional analogs of graphene. While the distinctive behavior of chiral fermions (e.g. Klein tunneling) is already evident in two dimensional graphene, the physics of chirality in three dimensions opens a number of new possibilities. In this paper we investiga…
We investigate collective modes in three dimensional (3D) gapless multi-Weyl semimetals with anisotropic energy band dispersions (i.e., $E\sim \sqrt{ k_{\parallel}^{2J} + k_z^2}$, where $k_{\parallel}$ and $k_z$ are wave vectors and $J$ is a positive integer). For comparison, we also consider the gapless semimetals with the isotropic band dispersions (i.e., $E\sim k^J$). We calculate analytically long-wavelength plasma frequencies incorporating interband transitions and chiral properties of carriers. For both the isotropic and anisotropic cases, we find that interband transitions and chirality…
The past decade has witnessed numerous discoveries of two-dimensional (2D) semimetals and insulators, whereas 2D metals are rarely identified. Borophene, a monolayer boron sheet, has recently emerged as a perfect 2D metal with unique structure and electronic properties. Here we study collective excitations in borophene, which exhibit two major plasmon modes with low damping rates extending from infrared to ultraviolet regime. The anisotropic 1D plasmon originates from electronic excitations of tilted Dirac cones in borophene, analogous to that in heavily doped Dirac semimetals. These features …
We present a theory of magnetotransport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals. We show that conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric and the sound absorption coefficients exhibit strong and anisotropic magnetic field dependences. We also discuss properties of magneto-plasmons and magneto-polaritons, whose existence is entirely determined by the chiral anomaly. Finally, we discuss the conditions of applicability of the quasi-classical description of electron transport phenomena related to the chiral anomaly.
Using the Kubo formalism we have calculated the local dynamic conductivity of a bulk, i.e., three-dimensional (3D), Dirac semimetal (BDS). We obtain that at frequencies lower than Fermi energy the metallic response in a BDS film manifests in the existence of surface-plasmon polaritons, but at higher frequencies the dielectric response is dominated and it occurs that a BDS film behaves as a dielectric waveguide. At this dielectric regime we predict the existence inside a BDS film of novel electromagnetic modes, a 3D analog of the transverse electric waves in graphene. We also find that the diel…
We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
Helicons are transverse electromagnetic waves propagating in three-dimensional (3D) electron systems subject to a static magnetic field. We present a theory of helicons propagating through a 3D Weyl semimetal. Our approach relies on the evaluation of the optical conductivity tensor from semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, with the inclusion of certain Berry curvature corrections that have been neglected in the earlier literature (such as the one due to the orbital magnetic moment). We demonstrate that the axion term characterizing the electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals dramatica…
The plasmon frequency in standard electron gases with a parabolic single-particle dispersion is a purely classical quantity that is not sensitive to electron interactions or the equation of state. We demonstrate that this canonical result no longer holds for plasmons in three-dimensional semimetals, which can thus be used to probe many-body effects in these systems. In particular, we show that the plasmon frequency in an external magnetic field displays quantum oscillations, which is not the case for the electron gas. Using the random phase approximation, results are presented for the magnetop…
Three-dimensional (3D) semimetals have been predicted and demonstrated to have a wide variety of interesting properties associated with its linear energy dispersion. In analogy to two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals, such as graphene, Cd3As2, a 3D semimetal, has shown ultra-high mobility, large Fermi velocity, and has been hypothesized to support plasmons at terahertz frequencies. In this work, we demonstrate synthesis of high-quality large-area Cd3As2 thin-films through thermal evaporation as well as the experimental realization of plasmonic structures consisting of periodic arrays of Cd3As…
We study the linear response of doped three dimensional Dirac and Weyl semimetals to vector potentials, by calculating the wave-vector and frequency dependent current-current response function analytically. The longitudinal part of the dynamic current-current response function is then used to study the plasmon dispersion, and the optical conductivity. The transverse response in the static limit yields the orbital magnetic susceptibility. In a Weyl semimetal, along with the current-current response function, all these quantities are significantly impacted by the presence of parallel electric an…
We study localized plasmonic excitations in bilayer graphene (BLG) nanodisks, comparing AA-stacked and AB-stacked BLG and contrasting the results to the case of two monolayers without electronic hybridization. The electrodynamic response of the BLG electron gas is described in terms of a spatially homogeneous surface conductivity, and an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach is employed to carry out all the numerical calculations of plasmon resonances. Due to a unique electronic band structures, the resonance frequency of the traditional dipolar plasmonic mode in the AA-…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by unconventional electromagnetic response. We present analytical expressions for all components of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent charge-spin linear-response tensor of Weyl fermions. The spin-momentum locking of the Weyl Hamiltonian leads to a coupling between charge and longitudinal spin fluctuations, while transverse spin fluctuations remain decoupled from the charge. A real Weyl semimetal with multiple Weyl nodes can show this charge-spin coupling in equilibrium if its crystal symmetry is sufficiently low. All Weyl semimetals are expected to show…
Optical antennas link objects to light. Here, we analyze metal nanorod antennas as cavities with variable reflection coefficients to derive the interaction of dipolar transitions with radiation through the antenna modes. The presented analytical model accurately describes the complete emission process, and is summarized in a phase-matching equation. We show how antenna modes evolve as they become increasingly more bound, i.e. plasmonic. The results illustrate why efficient antennas should not be too plasmonic, and how subradiant even modes can evolve into weakly-interacting dark modes. Our des…
The equality between the spectral, directional emittance and absorptance of an object under local thermal equilibrium is known as Kirchhoff's law of radiation. The breakdown of Kirchhoff's law of radiation is physically allowed by breaking time reversal symmetry and can open opportunities for nonreciprocal light emitters and absorbers. Large anomalous Hall conductivity and angle recently observed in topological Weyl semimetals, particularly type-I magnetic Weyl semimetals and type-II Weyl semimetals, are expected to create large nonreciprocal electromagnetic wave propagation. In this work, we …
Recently, the nodal line semimetals have attracted considerable interests in condensed matter physics. We show that their distinct band structure can be detected by measuring the collective modes. In particular, we find that the dependence of the plasmon frequency $ω_p$ on the electron density $n$ follows a $ω_p \sim n^{1/4}$ law in the long wavelength limit. Our results will be useful in the ongoing search for new candidates of nodal line semimetals.
In the fast growing two-dimensional (2D) materials family, anisotropic 2D materials, with their intrinsic in-plane anisotropy, exhibit a great potential in optoelectronics. One such typical material is black phosphorus (BP), with a layer-dependent and highly tunable band gap. Such intrinsic anisotropy adds a new degree of freedom to the excitation, detection and control of light. Particularly, hyperbolic plasmons with hyperbolic q-space dispersion are predicted to exist in BP films, where highly directional propagating polaritons with divergent densities of states are hosted. Combined with a t…
We investigate Weyl semimetals with tilted conical bands in a magnetic field. Even when the cones are overtilted (type-II Weyl semimetal), Landau-level quantization can be possible as long as the magnetic field is oriented close to the tilt direction. Most saliently, the tilt can be described within the relativistic framework of Lorentz transformations that give rise to a rich spectrum, displaying new transitions beyond the usual dipolar ones in the optical conductivity. We identify particular features in the latter that allow one to distinguish between semimetals of different types.
We consider a chain of regularly-spaced spherical metallic nanoparticles, where each particle supports three degenerate localized surface plasmons. Due to the dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles, the localized plasmons couple to form extended collective modes. Using an open quantum system approach in which the collective plasmons are interacting with vacuum electromagnetic modes and which, importantly, readily incorporates retardation via the light-matter coupling, we analytically evaluate the resulting radiative frequency shifts of the plasmonic bandstructure. For subwavelength-size…
In this work, the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two Weyl semimetal (WSM) nanoparticles (NPs) is investigated. The numerical results show that negative differential thermal conductance (NDTC) effect can be obtained in this system, i.e., when the temperature of the emitter is fixed, the heat flux does not decrease monotonically with the increase of the temperature of the receiver. Specifically, when the temperature of the emitter is 300 K, the heat flux is identical when the temperature of the receiver is 50 K or 280 K. The NDTC effect is attributed to the fact that the perm…
Disentangling the contributions of radiative and non-radiative localized plasmonic modes from the photonic density of states of metallic nanocavities between atomically-sharp tips and flat substrates remains an experimental challenge nowadays. Electroluminescence due to tunnelling through the tip-substrate gap allows discerning solely the excitation of radiative modes, but this information is inherently convolved with that of the electronic structure of the system. In this work we present a fully experimental procedure to eliminate the electronic-structure factors from the scanning tunnelling …
Nanoscale gaps between adjacent metallic nanostructures give rise to extraordinarily large field enhancements, known as "hot spots", upon illumination. Incident light with the electric field polarized across the gap (along the interparticle axis) is generally known to induce the strongest surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enhancements. However, here we show that for a nanogap located within a nanowire linking extended Au electrodes, the greatest enhancement and resulting SERS emission occurs when the electric field of the incident light is polarized along the gap (transverse to the in…
Exotic topological and transport properties of Weyl semimetals generated a lot of excitement in the condensed matter community. Here we show that Weyl semimetals in a strong magnetic field are highly unusual optical materials. The propagation of electromagnetic waves is affected by an interplay between plasmonic response of chiral Weyl fermions and extreme anisotropy induced by a magnetic field. The resulting magneto-polaritons possess a number of peculiar properties, such as hyperbolic dispersion, photonic stop bands, coupling-induced transparency, and broadband polarization conversion. These…
We investigate excitation dynamics in the system of a quantum dipole emitter (QDE) coupled to a located nearby metal nanoparticle (MNP), which exhibits a dipolar localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance at the frequency of the QDE radiative transition, in the presence of a strong external resonant electromagnetic field. Considering the QDE-field interactions in the regime of strong QDE-field coupling, we show that the feedback provided by the MNP on the QDE (due to the LSP excitation with the field generated by the dipole moment of the QDE transition) influences significantly the coherent pro…
