Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) work under sophisticated external force field and its electrochemical properties could be modulated by strain. Owing to the electro-mechanical coupling, the change of micro-local-structures can greatly affect lithium (Li) diffusion rate in solid state electrolytes and electrode materials of LIBs. In this study, we find that strain gradient in bilayer graphene (BLG) significantly affects Li diffusion barrier, which is termed as the flexo-diffusion effect, through first-principles calculations. The Li diffusion barrier substantially decreases/increases under the positive/negative strain gradient, leading to the change of Li diffusion coefficient in several orders of magnitude at 300 K. Interestingly, the regulation effect of strain gradient is much more significant than that of uniform strain field, which can have a remarkable effect on the rate performance of batteries, with a considerable increase in the ionic conductivity and a slight change of the original material structure. Moreover, our ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) show that the asymmetric distorted lattice structure provides a driving force for Li diffusion, resulting in oriented diffusion along the positive strain gradient direction. These findings could extend present LIBs technologies by introducing the novel strain gradient engineering.

We report appearance of the net magnetization in Mn-based antiperovskite compounds as a result of the external strain gradient (flexomagnetic effect). In particular, we describe the mechanism of the magnetization induction in the Mn_{3}GaN at the atomic level in terms of the behavior of the local magnetic moments (LMM) of the Mn atoms. We show that the flexomagnetic effect is linear and results from the non-uniformity of the strain, i.e. it is absent not only in the ground state but also when the applied external strain is uniform. We estimate the flexomagnetic coefficient to be 1.95 mu_{B}*an…
Flexoelectricity is the linear response of polarization to a strain gradient. Here we address the simplest class of dielectrics, namely elemental cubic crystals, and we prove that therein there is no extrinsic (i.e. surface) contribution to flexoelectricity in the thermodynamic limit. The flexoelectric tensor is expressed as a bulk response of the solid, manifestly independent of surface configurations. Furthermore, we prove that the flexoelectric responses induced by a long-wavelength phonon and by a uniform strain gradient are identical.
The theories of flexoelectricity and that of nonlocal elasticity are closely related, and are often considered together when modeling strain-gradient effects in solids. Here I show, based on a first-principles lattice-dynamical analysis, that their relationship is much more intimate than previously thought, and their consistent simultaneous treatment is crucial for obtaining correct physical answers. In particular, I identify a gauge invariance in the theory, whereby the energies associated to strain-gradient elasticity and flexoelectrically induced electric fields are individually reference-d…

Here, we analyze in detail the electromechanical coupling mechanisms and derive generalized bias-concentration-strain equations for MIECs including effects of concentration-driven chemical expansion, deformation potential, and flexoelectric effect contributions. The relationship between the applied elastic strain gradient and the induced electric polarization in the alpha-phase polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films under bending conditions has been investigated. Our experimental studies have shown that the flexoelectric polarization is linearly proportional to the strain gradient and the corresponding direct flexoelectric response is strong. It is reasonable to believe that the physical mechanisms behind the flexoelectric effects in polymers and solid dielectrics are different.
We reveal that strong flexoelectric effect of solids can be induced due to the signfi?cant charge migration along the strain gradient direction, which represents a new understanding of the origin of flexoelectricity. Beyond the linear response theory, we illustrate such charge migration that is driven by an electric field effect in bent silicon thinfilms. Due to such charge migration, the variation of atomic charge no longer represents a linear response to strain gradient and the resulting giant flexoelectric coeffcients being size dependent cannot be treated as a bulk property. The obtained f…

Within the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory we studied the role of the flexocoupling between the order parameter and elastic strain gradients in the stability of a spatially-modulated phase (SMP) in ferroics with commensurate and incommensurate long-range ordered phases under the presence of squired elastic strain gradient. The squired elastic strain gradient is required for the free energy stability to arbitrary strain gradients. Obtained analytical expressions showed that the fundamental upper limit for the magnitude of the static bulk flexoelectric effect strength, estab…
The coupling between strain gradients and polarization, known as flexoelectricity, offers a new mechanism to control the functionality of dielectric materials. However, for the effect to be practically attractive, dynamic control of the strain gradient with magnitudes far exceeding those achievable via mechanical deformation (~10 $m^{-1}$) is needed. Strain-engineered thin films exhibit extraordinary strain gradients of $10^5-10^6 m{-1}$ arising from structural relaxation within a short space range that greatly enhances the steady-state flexoelectric effect. Here we report a giant, optically i…
Piezoelectricity is inherent only in noncentrosymmetric materials, but a piezoelectric response can also be obtained in centrosymmetric crystals if subjected to inhomogeneous deformation. This phenomenon, known as flexoelectricity, affects the functional properties of insulators, particularly thin films of high permittivity materials. We have measured strain-gradient-induced polarization in single crystals of paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ as a function of temperature and orientation down to and below the 105 K phase transition. Estimates were obtained for all the components of the flexoelectric tenso…
Flexoelectricity is a type of ubiquitous and prominent electromechanical coupling, pertaining to the response of electrical polarization to mechanical strain gradients while not restricted to the symmetry of materials. However, large elastic deformation in most solids is usually difficult to achieve and the strain gradient at minuscule is challenging to control. Here we exploit the exotic structural inhomogeneity of grain boundary to achieve a huge strain gradient (~ 1.2 nm-1) within 3 ~ 4 unit-cells, and thus obtain atomic-scale flexoelectric polarization up to ~ 38 μC/cm2 at a 24 LaAlO3 grai…
Halide perovskites have outstanding photovoltaic properties which have been optimized through interfacial engineering. However, as these materials approach the limits imposed by the physics of semiconductor junctions, it is urgent to explore alternatives, such as the bulk photovoltaic effect, whose physical origin is different and not bound by the same limits. In this context, we focus on the flexo-photovoltaic effect, a type of bulk photovoltaic effect that was recently observed in oxides under strain gradients. We have measured the flexo-photovoltaic effect of MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3 crystals und…
Dielectric nano-swithes made of the materials that exhibit piezoelectric and/or flexoelectric properties with significant electro-mechanical coupling are considered. In this case, a nonuniform strain field may locally break inversion symmetry and induce polarization even in nonpiezoelectrics. At reducing dimensions to the nanoscale, the flexoelectric effect demonstrates the nonlocality of the dielectric materials and plays more significant role than piezoelectric effect. The flexoelectric effect is included into consideration via additional term coupling strain gradient and polarization in the…
Flexoelectricity is a universal electromechanical coupling effect whereby all dielectric materials polarize in response to strain gradients. In particular, nanoscale flexoelectricity promises exotic phenomena and functions, but reliable characterization methods are required to unlock its potential. Here, we report anomalous mechanical control of quantum tunnelling that allows for characterizing nanoscale flexoelectricity. By applying strain gradients with an atomic force microscope tip, we systematically polarize an ultrathin film of otherwise nonpolar SrTiO$_{3}$, and simultaneously measure t…
The propagation front of a crack generates large strain gradients and it is therefore a strong source of gradient-induced polarization (flexoelectricity). Herein, we demonstrate that, in piezoelectric materials, a consequence of flexoelectricity is that crack propagation will be helped or hindered depending on whether it is parallel or antiparallel to the piezoelectric polar axis. This means that the theory of fracture physics can no longer assume mechanical symmetry in polar materials. The discovery of fracture asymmetry also has practical repercussions for the electromechanical fatigue of fe…
We report on nanoscale strain gradients in ferroelectric HoMnO3 epitaxial thin films, resulting in a giant flexoelectric effect. Using grazing-incidence in-plane X-ray diffraction, we measured strain gradients in the films, which were 6 or 7 orders of magnitude larger than typical values reported for bulk oxides. The combination of transmission electron microscopy, electrical measurements, and electrostatic calculations showed that flexoelectricity provides a means of tuning the physical properties of ferroelectric epitaxial thin films, such as domain configurations and hysteresis curves.
Implementation of antiferromagnetic compounds as active elements in spintronics has been hindered by their insensitive nature against external perturbations which causes difficulties in switching among different antiferromagnetic spin configurations. Electrically-controllable strain gradient can become a key parameter to tune the antiferromagnetic states of multiferroic materials. We have discovered a correlation between an electrically-written straight-stripe mixed-phase boundary and an in-plane antiferromagnetic spin axis in highly-elongated La-5%-doped BiFeO$_{3}$ thin films by performing p…
The polarization response of a material to a strain gradient, known as flexoelectricity, holds great promise for novel electromechanical applications. Despite considerable recent progress, however, the effect remains poorly understood. From both the fundamental and practical viewpoints, it is of crucial importance to know whether the coupling coefficients are primarily governed by the properties of the bulk material or by the details of the sample surface. Here we provide, by means of first-principles calculations, quantitative evidence supporting the latter scenario. In particular, we demonst…
Flexoelectric effect is the coupling between strain, polarization and their gradients, which are prominent at the nanoscale. Although this effect is important to understand nanostructures, such as domain walls in ferroelectrics, its electronic mechanism is not clear. In this work, we combined phase-field simulations and first-principles calculations to study the 180° domain walls in tetragonal ferroelectric PbTiO3, and found that the ultimate source of Néel components is the gradient of the square of spontaneous polarizations. Electronic structural analysis reveals that there is a redistributi…
Although rare, spontaneous breakdown of inversion symmetry sometimes occurs in a material which is metallic: these are commonly known as polar metals or ferroelectric metals. Their 'polarization', however, cannot be switched via an electric field, which limits the experimental control over band topology. Here we shall investigate, via first-principles theory, flexoelectricity as a possible way around this obstacle with the well known polar metal LiOsO$_3$. The flexocoupling coefficients are computed for this metal with high accuracy with a completely new approach based on real-space sums of th…
Room-temperature (RT) conductivity of most candidates for solid electrolytes of miniaturized lithium-ion batteries is still 1-2 orders of magnitude below commercial requirements, therefore several approaches are being pursued aiming the enhancement of such values. In this letter, we report for the first time direct theoretical evidence that epitaxial strain can be an efficient tool to reach this goal.
(Li,Al)-co-doped magnesium spinel (Li$_x$Mg$_{1-2x}$Al$_{2+x}$O$_4$) is a solid lithium-ion electrolyte with potential use in all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Interfaces with spinel electrodes, such as Li$_y$Mn$_2$O$_4$ and Li$_{4+3z}$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$, may be lattice-matched, with potentially low interfacial resistances. Small lattice parameter differences across a lattice-matched interface are unavoidable, causing residual epitaxial strain. This strain potentially modifies lithium diffusion near the interface, contributing to interfacial resistance. Here we report a density functional the…
We developed a Landau type theory for the description of polar phenomena in low-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically exploring flexoelectric origin of the polarization induced by a spontaneous bending and by inversion symmetry breaking due to the interactions with substrate. We consider the appearance of the spontaneous out-of-plane polarization due to the flexoelectric coupling with the strain gradient of the spontaneous surface rippling and surface-induced piezoelectricity. Performed calculations proved that the out-of-plane spontaneous polarization, originated f…
Young's modulus determines the mechanical loads required to elastically stretch a material, and also, the loads required to bend it, given that bending stretches one surface while compressing the opposite one. Flexoelectric materials have the additional property of becoming electrically polarized when bent. While numerous studies have characterized this flexoelectric coupling, its impact on the mechanical response, due to the energy cost of polarization upon bending, is largely unexplored. This intriguing contribution of strain gradient elasticity is expected to become visible at small length …
Using the symmetry theory we analyze of the flexomagnetic effect in all 90 magnetic classes and showed that 69 of them are flexomagnetic. Then we explore how the symmetry breaking, inevitably present in the vicinity of the surface, changes the local symmetry and thus the form of the flexomagnetic tensors. All possible surface magnetic classes (in the number of 19) were obtained from the 90 bulk magnetic classes for the surface cuts 001, 010 and 100 types. It appeared that all 90 bulk magnetic classes become flexomagnetic, piezomagnetic and piezoelectric in the vicinity of surface. Using the fr…
The influence of elastic strain on the lithium vacancy formation and migration in bulk LiCoO2 is evaluated by means of first-principles calculations within density functional theory (DFT). Strain dependent energies are determined directly from defective cells and also within linear elasticity theory from the elastic dipole tensor (Gij) for ground state and saddle point configurations. We analyze finite size-effects in the calculation of Gij, compare the predictions of the linear elastic model with those obtained from direct calculations of defective cells under strain and discuss the differenc…
Within the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we explore the impact of elastic anisotropy, electrostriction, flexoelectric couplings, and mismatch strain on the domain structure morphology in ferroelectric core-shell nanoparticles of spherical shape. We perform finite element modelling (FEM) for multiaxial ferroelectric nanoparticle cores covered with an elastically-isotropic soft or elastically-anisotropic rigid paraelectric shell, with and without mismatch strains. In the case of a core covered with a soft shell, the FEM results show that at room temperature a single polari…
X-ray analysis of ferroelectric thin layers of Ba1/2Sr1/2TiO3 with different thickness reveals the presence of internal strain gradients across the film thickness and allows us to propose a functional form for the internal strain profile. We use this to calculate the direct influence of strain gradient, through flexoelectric coupling, on the degradation of the ferroelectric properties of thin films with decreasing thickness, in excellent agreement with the observed behaviour. This work highlights the link between strain relaxation and strain gradients in epitaxial films, and shows the pressing…
A phenomenological treatment of domain walls based on the Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire theory is developed for uniaxial, trigonal ferroelectrics lithium niobate and lithium tantalate. The contributions to the domain wall energy from polarization and strain as a function of orientation are considered. Analytical expressions are developed which are analyzed numerically to determine the minimum polarization, strain, and energy configurations of domain walls. It is found that hexagonal y-walls are preferred over x-walls in both materials. This agrees well with experimental observation of domain geom…
Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, an influence of the misfit strain and surface screening charges, as well as the role of the flexoelectric effect, have been studied by numerical modelling in the case of a rhombohedral lead zirconate-titanate ferroelectric/ferroelastic thin film with an anisotropic misfit produced by a substrate. It was established that the magnitude and sign of the misfit strain influence the domain structure and predominant directions of the polarization vector, providing misfit-dependent phases with different favourable polarization components. Whilst strong enou…
Lithium intercalation into graphite is the foundation for the lithium-ion battery, and the thermodynamics of the lithiation of graphitic electrodes have been heavily investigated. Intercalated lithium in bulk graphite undergoes structural ordering known as staging to minimize electrostatic repulsions within the crystal lattice. While this process is well-understood for bulk graphite, confinement effects become important at the nanoscale, which can significantly impact the electrochemistry of nanostructured electrodes. Therefore, graphene offers a model platform to study intercalation dynamics …

Despite the growing interest, many fundamental questions related to the mechanisms controlling the appearance and stability of ferroelectric topological structures remain open. In this context, ferroelectric nanoparticles provide a flexible playground for such investigations. Here, we present a theoretical study of ferroelectric polar textures in a cylindrical core-shell nanoparticle. The ca…
Dendrite formation is a major obstacle, such as capacity loss and short circuit, to the next-generation high-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries. The development of successful Li dendrite mitigation strategies is impeded by an insufficient understanding of Li dendrite growth mechanisms. Li-plating-induced internal stress in Li metal and its effect on dendrite growth have been studied in previous models and experiments, while the underlying microcosmic mechanism is elusive. Here, we analyze the role of plating-induced stress in dendrite formation through first-principles calculations an…
Structural strain severely impacts material properties such as the linear and non-linear optical response. Moreover, strain plays a key role, e.g., in the physics of ferroelectrics and in particular of their domain walls. $μ$-Raman spectroscopy is a well-suited technique for the investigation of such strain effects, as it allows to measure the lattice dynamics locally. However, quantifying and reconstructing strain fields from Raman maps requires knowledge on the strain dependence of phonon frequencies. In this work, we have analyzed both theoretically and experimentally the phonon frequencies…
The possibility of tuning the vibrational properties and the thermal conductivity of layered van der Waals materials either chemically or mechanically paves the way to significant advances in nanoscale heat management. Using first-principles calculations we investigate the modulation of heat transport in MoS2 by lithium intercalation and cross-plane strain. We find that both the in-plane and cross-plane thermal conductivity (kr, kz) of MoS2 are extremely sensitive to both strain and electrochemical intercalation. Combining lithium intercalation and strain, the in-plane and cross-plane thermal …
Strain effects on the stability, electronic structure, and hydrogen storage capacity of lithium-doped graphane (CHLi) have been investigated by stateof-the art first principle density functional theory (DFT). Molecular dynamics MD) simulations have confirmed the stability of Li on graphane sheet when it is subject to 10% of tensile strain. Under biaxial asymmetric strain, the binding energy of Li of graphane (CH) sheet increases by 52% with respect to its bulk's cohesive energy. With 25% doping concentration of Li on CH sheet, the gravimetric density of hydrogen storage is found to reach up to …
We present a new way to enhance the electron-phonon coupling constant and the critical superconducting temperature of graphene, significantly beyond all reported values. Using density functional theory, we explore the application effects of the tensile biaxial strain on the lithium intercalated graphene. Both effects together, the presence of adatom and the strain, trigger enhancement of critical temperature, up to 300\%, compared to non-strained lithium intercalated graphene.
Single-crystalline membranes of functional materials enable the tuning of properties via extreme strain states; however, conventional routes for producing membranes require the use of sacrificial layers and chemical etchants, which can both damage the membrane and limit the ability to make them ultrathin. Here we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of the cubic Heusler compound GdPtSb on graphene-terminated Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates. Despite the presence of the graphene interlayer, the Heusler films have epitaxial registry to the underlying sapphire, as revealed by x-ray diffraction, reflection high…
Can Strain or Anion Interchange Make an Unstable Structure Stable? Energetics, Lattice Dynamics and Strain-Tunable Band Gaps of Lithium Chalcohalide Antiperovskites (Li$_{3}$$BA$) and their Anion Interchange Variants (Li$_{3}$$AB$)
We report first-principle atomistic simulations on the effect of local strain gradients on the nanoscale domain morphology of free-standing PbTiO$_3$ ultrathin films. First, the ferroelectric properties of free films at the atomic level are reviewed. For the explored thicknesses (10 to 23 unit cells), we find flux-closure domain structures whose morphology is thickness dependent. A critical value of 20 unit cells is observed: thinner films show structures with 90$^\circ$ domain loops, whereas thicker ones develop, in addition, 180$^\circ$ domain walls, giving rise to structures of the Landau-L…
