Within the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we explore the impact of elastic anisotropy, electrostriction, flexoelectric couplings, and mismatch strain on the domain structure morphology in ferroelectric core-shell nanoparticles of spherical shape. We perform finite element modelling (FEM) for multiaxial ferroelectric nanoparticle cores covered with an elastically-isotropic soft or elastically-anisotropic rigid paraelectric shell, with and without mismatch strains. In the case of a core covered with a soft shell, the FEM results show that at room temperature a single polarization vortex with a dipolar kernel can be stable if the electrostriction coupling is weak. With increasing anisotropic electrostriction coupling, the vortex disappears and is replaced by complex flux-closure structures, which are formed in the equatorial plane and transform into an elongated vortex with a central 180-degree domain wall near the core poles. This complex domain morphology develops in the core due to the anisotropic electrostriction, and the flexoelectric coupling leads to an additional curvature and twist of the polarization isosurfaces. In contrast to this, FEM performed for a core covered with a rigid shell shows that, at room temperature, the anisotropic elastic properties of the shell can stabilize vortex-like structures with three flux-closure domains, which gradually cross in the equatorial plane of the core and transform into 120-degree domains near the core poles. The flexoelectric coupling leads to a noticeable curling of the flux-closure domain walls. A mismatch strain compensates the curling of the flux-closure domains in the core confined by the elastically-anisotropic rigid shell. Our analysis reveals different types of topological defects, namely Bloch point structures (BPS) and Ising lines, that form in a ferroelectric core covered with a soft or rigid shell.
Polar chiral structures have recently attracted much interest within the scientific community, as they pave the way towards innovative device concepts similar to the developments achieved in nanomagnetism. Despite the growing interest, many fundamental questions related to the mechanisms controlling the appearance and stability of ferroelectric topological structures remain open. In this context, ferroelectric nanoparticles provide a flexible playground for such investigations. Here, we present a theoretical study of ferroelectric polar textures in a cylindrical core-shell nanoparticle. The ca…
Using the self-consistent Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we simulate and analyze the spontaneous formation of the domain structure in thin ferroelectric films covered with the surface screening charge of the specific nature (Bardeen-type surface states). Hence we consider the competition between the screening and the domain formation as alternative ways to reduce the electrostatic energy and reveal unusual peculiarities of distributions of polarization, electric and elastic fields conditioned by the surface screening length and the flexocoupling strength. We have established that the crit…
We consider theoretically the influence of the flexoelectric coupling on the spatial distribution and temperature behavior of spontaneous polarization for several types of stable domain structure in thin ferroelectric films, such as stripe domains and vortices.Finite element modelling (FEM) for BaTiO3 films and analytical calculations within the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach reveals that an out-of-plane polarization component can be very sensitive to the flexoelectric coupling for periodic quasi-2D stripe domains and 3D vortex-antivortex structures. However, the influence is rather differ…
We explore the impact of the flexoelectric effect and Vegard effect (chemical pressure) on the phase diagrams, long-range polar order and related physical properties of the spherical ferroelectric nanoparticles using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenological approach. The synergy of these effects can lead to the remarkable changes of the nanoparticles' phase diagrams. In particular, a commonly expected transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric phase at some small critical size is absent; so that the critical size loses its sense. Contrary, the stabilization of the ferroelectric phase man…
Flexoelectric effect impact on the generalized susceptibility and soft phonons dispersion was not studied in the long-range ordered phases of ferroics. The gap in the knowledge motivated us to establish the impact of the flexocoupling on the correlation function of the long-range order parameter fluctuations in ferroelectric phase of ferroics with local disordering sources. Within Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we obtained analytical expressions for the generalized susceptibility and phonon dispersion relations in the ferroelectric phase. Unexpectedly, the joint action of static and dynam…
We have measured the bending-induced polarization of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 single crystals with compositions at the relaxor-ferroelectric phase boundary. The crystals display very large flexoelectricity, with flexocoupling coefficients an order of magnitude bigger than the theoretical upper limit set by the theories of Kogan and Tagantsev. This enhancement persists in the paraphrase up to a temperature T* that coincides with the start of elastic softening in the crystals. Analysis of the temperature dependence and cross-correlation between flexoelectric, dielectric and elastic properties ind…
Flexoelectric effect is the coupling between strain, polarization and their gradients, which are prominent at the nanoscale. Although this effect is important to understand nanostructures, such as domain walls in ferroelectrics, its electronic mechanism is not clear. In this work, we combined phase-field simulations and first-principles calculations to study the 180° domain walls in tetragonal ferroelectric PbTiO3, and found that the ultimate source of Néel components is the gradient of the square of spontaneous polarizations. Electronic structural analysis reveals that there is a redistributi…
Macroscopic descriptions of ferroelectrics have an obvious appeal in terms of efficiency and physical intuition. Their predictive power, however, has often been thwarted by the lack of a systematicp rocedure to extract the relevant materials parameters from the microscopics. Here we address this limitation by establishing an unambiguous two-way mapping between spatially inhomogeneous fields and discrete lattice modes. This yields a natural treatment of gradient couplings in the macroscopic regime via a long-wavelength expansion of the crystal Hamiltonian. Our analysis reveals an inherent arbit…
Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, we considered the impact of the flexoelectro-chemical coupling on the size effects inpolar properties and phase transitions of thin ferroelectric films with a layer of elastic defects. We investigated a typical case, when defects fill a thin layer below the top film surface with a constant concentration creating an additional gradient of elastic fields. The defective surface of the film is not covered with an electrode, but instead with an ultra-thin layer of ambient screening charges, characterized by a surface screening length. This geometry is typica…
Using the Landau Ginzburg Devonshire theory and scalar approximation, we derived analytical expressions for the singular points (zeros, complex ranges) of the acoustic phonon mode (A mode) frequency in dependence on the wave vector k and examined the conditions of the soft A modes appearance in a ferroelectric depending on the magnitude of the flexoelectric coefficient f and temperature T. We predict that if the magnitude of the flexocoefficient f is equal to the temperature-dependent critical value fcr(T) at the temperature T=T_IC, the A mode frequency tends to zero at k=kr_0 and the spontane…

In the framework of the thermodynamic approach Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) combined with the equations of electrostatics, we investigated the effect of polarization surface screening on finite size effects of the phase diagrams, polar and dielectric properties of ferroelectric nanoparticles of different shapes. We obtained and analyzed the analytical results for the dependences of the ferroelectric phase transition temperature, critical size, spontaneous polarization and thermodynamic coercive field on the shape and size of nanoparticles. The pronounced size effect of these characteristic…
Domain walls (DWs) are ubiquitous in ferroelectric materials. Ferroelastic DWs refer to those who separate two domains with unparalleled polarizations (or two different ferroelastic variants). It is long believed that the structures of ferroelastic DWs can be simply explained from the perspective of mechanical and electric compatibilities in the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory. Here we show that the converse flexoelectricity must be taken into account for fully describing the nature of ferroelastic DWs. In our work, an unexpected asymmetric structure is identified, whi…
Ferroelectric materials are characterized by the presence of an electric dipole that can be reversed by application of an external electric field, a feature that is exploited in ferroelectric memories. All ferroelectrics are piezoelectric, and therefore exhibit a strong intrinsic coupling between polarization and elastic deformation - a feature widely used in piezoelectric transducers and high-displacement actuators. A less explored and exploited property is flexoelectricity, i.e. the coupling between polarization and a strain gradient. Though flexoelectricity is an old concept (it was discove…
The polar states of uniaxial ferroelectric nanoparticles interacting with a surface system of electronic and ionic charges with a broad distribution of mobilities is explored, which corresponds to the experimental case of nanoparticles in solution or ambient conditions. The nonlinear interactions between the ferroelectric dipoles and surface charges with slow relaxation dynamics in an external field lead to the emergence of a broad range of paraelectric-like, antiferroelectric-like ionic, and ferroelectric-like ferroionic states. The crossover between these states can be controlled not only by…
Homogeneous single phase GdCrO3 nanoparticles are synthesized by a modified-hydrothermal synthesis. The sample shows a compensation temperature at 128 K, below which the DC magnetization becomes negative and positive at low temperatures due to the competition between the two sublattice magnetization. At Néel temperature (168K), the line width and the intensity show an abrupt transition, revealed from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.
For advanced applications in modern industry it is very important to reduce the volume of ferroelectric nanoparticles without serious deterioration of their polar properties. In many practically important cases fixed volume (rather than fixed size) corresponds to realistic technological conditions of nanoparticles fabrication. The letter is focused on the theoretical study of the behavior of ferroelectric polarization, paramagnetoelectric coefficient and phase diagrams of semi-ellipsoidal nanoparticles with fixed volume V. Our approach combines the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenology, cla…
A theoretical study of a dielectrophoretic force, i.e. the force acting on an electrically neutral particle in the inhomogeneous electric field, which is produced by a ferroelectric domain pattern, is presented. It has been shown by several researchers that artificially prepared domain patterns with given geometry in ferroelectric single crystals represent an easy and flexible method for patterning dielectric nanoobjects using dielectrophoretic forces. The source of the dielectrophoretic force is a strong and highly inhomogeneous (stray) electric field, which exists in the vicinity of the ferr…

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory and effective medium approximation, we analytically calculate typical dependences of the pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients on external electric field, temperature and radius for spherical single-domain ferroelectric nanoparticles. The considered physical model corresponds to the nanocomposite with small fraction of ferroelectric nanoparticles. Within the framework of the analytical model we establish how the size changes determine the temperature and field behavior pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients on example of BaTiO3 nanoparticles…
When decreasing the size of nanoscale magnetic particles their magnetization becomes vulnerable to thermal fluctuations as approaching the superparamgnetic limit, hindering thus applications relying on a stable magnetization. Here, we show theoretically that a magnetoelectric coupling to a ferroelectric substrate renders possible the realization of substantially smaller nano clusters with thermally stable magnetization. For an estimate of cluster size we perform calculations with realistic material parameters for iron nano particles on ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate. We find, steering the pola…
The influence of flexoelectric coupling on the internal structure of neutral domain walls in tetragonal phase of perovskite ferroelectrics is studied. The effect is shown to lower the symmetry of 180-degree walls which are oblique with respect to the cubic crystallographic axes, while {100} and {110} walls stay "untouched". Being of the Ising type in the absence of the flexoelectric interaction, the oblique domain walls acquire a new polarization component with a structure qualitatively different from the classical Bloch-wall structure. In contrast to the Bloch-type walls, where the polarizati…
We consider a model of a nanocomposite based on non-interacting spherical single-domain ferroelectric nanoparticles of various sizes embedded in a dielectric matrix. The size distribution function of these nanoparticles is selected as a part of the Gaussian distribution from minimum to maximum radius (truncated normal distribution). For such nanocomposites, we calculate the dependences of the reversible part of the electric polarization, the electrocaloric temperature change, and the dielectric permittivity on the external electric field, which have the characteristic form of hysteresis loops.…
The correlation between antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric domain structures in multiferroics has been studied. The role of magnetoelectric interactions in a formation of antiferromagnetic domain structure has been analysed. It has been shown the major physical mechanism binding antiferromagnetic domains to ferroelectrics ones is inhomogeneous flexomagnetoelectric interaction of the Pz((lgrad)lz-lz(divl)) type. The dependences illustrating rearrangement of antiferromagnetic domain pattern together with change of ferroelectric domains thickness has been performed.
The effective piezoelectric coefficients of twin walls in tetragonal ferroelectric are calculated in the framework of decoupling approximation and Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory allowing for polarization gradient terms, electrostriction and flexoelectric coupling. Using an example of piezoelectric response of a1-a2 twins to a homogeneous electric field, we show that the response is almost independent on the flexoelectric coupling, but is very sensitive to the values of polarization gradient coefficients. This behavior originates from the strong coupling between local dielectric susceptibili…
(00l)-Oriented LiNbO3 ultra-thin film was fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate using pulsed laser deposition. The film shrunk into crystalline state nanoparticles that still kept (00l) preferential orientation as being annealed in the oxygen atmosphere at 500 oC for 2 hours. These LiNbO3 nanoparticles exhibited the ferroelectricity, showing asymmetrical hysteresis loop which might originate from the large internal field at the interface. These nanoparticles could be used for further studying on the size effects and the ferroelectricity of nanocrystal.
For the first time we predict the conditions of superparaelectric phase appearance in the ensemble of non-interacting spherical ferroelectric nanoparticles. The superparaelectricity in nanoparticle was defined by analogy with superparamagnetism, obtained earlier in small nanoparticles made of paramagnetic material. Calculations of correlation radius, energetic barriers of polarization reorientation and polarization response to external electric field, were performed within Landau-Ginzburg phenomenological approach for perovskites Pb(Zr,Ti)O3, BiFeO3 and uniaxial ferroelectrics rochelle salt an…
Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) was used to investigate the ferroelectric properties of sol-gel derived LiNbO$_3$ nanoparticles. To determine the degree of ferroelectricity we took large-area images and performed statistical image-analysis. The ferroelectric behavior of single nanoparticles was verified by poling experiments using the PFM tip. Finally we carried out simultaneous measurements of the in-plane and the out-of-plane piezoresponse of the nanoparticles, followed by measurements of the same area after rotation of the sample by 90$^{\circ}$ and 180$^{\circ}$. Such measurements bas…
Electric field dependent mechanical properties of relaxor ferroelectric material Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 are investigated with the nanoindentation technique. Giant electric-field-tunable apparent elastic modulus (up to -39%), hardness (-9% to 20%) and energy dissipation (up to -13%) are reported. Based on experimental data, a characterization method of electromechanical coupled nanoindentation is proposed. In this method, an electric field tunable scaling relationship among elastic modulus, hardness and indentation work for ferroelectric materials can be determined. In addition, this method ca…
The size effect on pyroelectric response of ferroelectric nanowires and nanotubes is analyzed. The pyroelectric coefficient strongly increases with the wire radius decrease and diverges at critical radius Rcr corresponding to the size-driven transition into paraelectric phase. Size-driven enhancement of pyroelectric coupling leads to the giant pyroelectric current and voltage generation by the polarized ferroelectric nanoparticles in response to the temperature fluctuation. The maximum efficiency of the pyroelectric energy harvesting and bolometric detection is derived, and is shown to approac…
Analytical description of domain structure morphology and phase diagrams of ferroelectric nanoparticles is developed in the framework of Landau Ginzburg Devonshire approach. To model realistic conditions of incomplete screening of spontaneous polarization at the particle surface, it was considered covered by an ultra-thin layer of screening charge with finite screening length. The phase diagrams, calculated for spherical Sn2P2S6 nanoparticles in coordinates "temperature vs surface screening length" by finite element modeling, demonstrate the emergence of polydomain region at the tricritical po…
Ferroelectric nanoparticles of different shape and their nanocomposites are actively studied in modern physics. Because of their applications in many fields of nanotechnology, the size effects and the possible disappearance of ferroelectricity at a critical particle volume attract a growing scientific interest. In this paper we study the size effects of the cylindrical nanoparticle phase diagrams allowing for effective surface tension and depolarization field influence. The Euler-Lagrange equations were solved by direct variational method. The approximate analytical expression for the paraelec…
We report from first-principles-based atomistic simulations that ferroelectricity can be sustained in PbTiO3 nanoparticles of only a few lattice constants in size as a result of a toroidal ordering. We found that size-induced topological transformations lead to the stabilization of a ferroelectric bubble by the alignment of vortex cores along a closed path. These transformations, which are driven by the aspect ratio of the nanostructure, change the topology of the polarization field, producing a rich variety of polar configurations. For sufficiently flat nanostructures, a multi-bubble state br…
The possibility of controlling the domain structure in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial and multiaxial ferroelectrics using a shell with tunable dielectric properties is studied in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Finite element modeling and analytical calculations are performed for Sn2P2S6 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered with high-k polymer, temperature dependent isotropic paraelectric strontium titanate, or anisotropic liquid crystal shells with a strongly temperature dependent dielectric permittivity tensor. It appeared that the tunable paraelectric shell with a tempe…
In the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach, we studied the possibility of controlling the polarity and chirality of equilibrium domain structures by a homogeneous external electric field in a nanosized ferroelectric core covered with an ultra-thin shell of screening charge. Under certain screening lengths and core sizes, the minimum of the LGD energy, which consists of Landau-Devonshire energy, Ginzburg polarization gradient energy, and electrostatic terms, leads to the spontaneous appearance of stable labyrinth domain structures in the core. The labyrinths evolve from a…

General approach for consideration of primary ferroic (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, ferroelastic) nanoparticles phase transitions was proposed in phenomenological theory framework. The surface stress, order parameter gradient, striction as well as depolarization and demagnetization effects were included into the free energy. The strong intrinsic surface stress under the curved nanoparticle surface was shown to play the important role in the shift of transition temperature (if any) up to the appearance of new ordered phase absent in the bulk ferroic. The approximate analytical expression for t…
Most multiferroic materials with coexisting ferroelectric and magnetic order exhibit cycloidal antiferromagnetism with wavelength of several nanometers. The prototypical example is bismuth ferrite (BiFeO$_3$ or BFO), a room-temperature multiferroic considered for a number of technological applications. While most applications require small sizes such as nanoparticles, little is known about the state of these materials when their sizes are comparable to the cycloid wavelength. This work describes a microscopic theory of cycloidal magnetism in nanoparticles based on Hamiltonian calculations. It …
Interest in epitaxial ferroelectric nanoislands was growing rapidly in recent years driven by their potential for devices, especially ultradense memories. Recent advances in the "bottom- up" (self-assembly) nanometer scale techniques have opened up the opportunities of fabricating high-quality epitaxial ferroelectric nanoislands with extremely small thickness and lateral size on the order of 1 nm and 20 nm, respectively. On the other hand, recent emergence of powerful probes, such as piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), has enabled imaging of a local domain structure with sub-10 nm resolution…
Pressure-induced polarization switching in ferroelectric thin films has emerged as a powerful method for domain patterning, allowing to create predefined domain patterns on free surfaces and under thin conductive top electrodes. However, the mechanisms for pressure induced polarization switching in ferroelectrics remain highly controversial, with flexoelectricity, polarization rotation and suppression, and bulk and surface electrochemical processes all being potentially relevant. Here we classify possible pressure induced switching mechanisms, perform elementary estimates, and study in depth u…
The antiferromagnetic domain structure of a multiferroic has been investigated in the presence of a ferroelectric domain structure. It has been demonstrated that an inhomogeneous magnetoelectric (flexomagnetoelectric) interaction leads to pinning of antiferromagnetic domain walls at the walls of the ferroelectric domains and to a change in the structure of antiferromagnetic domain walls.
Based on our analytical results [http://arxiv.org/abs/1006.3670], we predict that undoped nanoparticles (size <10-100nm) of incipient ferroelectrics without any magnetic ions can become ferromagnetic even at room temperatures due to the inherent presence of a new type of magnetic defects with spin S=1, namely oxygen vacancies, where the magnetic triplet state is the ground state in the vicinity of the surface (magnetic shell), while the nonmagnetic singlet is the ground state in the bulk material (nonmagnetic core). Consideration of randomly distributed magnetic spins (S=1) had shown that magn…
Evolution of a stripe array of polarization domains triggered by the oxygen vacancy migration in an acceptor doped ferroelectric is investigated in a self-consistent manner. A comprehensive model based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach includes semiconductor features due to the presence of electrons and holes, and effects of electrostriction and flexoelectricity especially significant near the free surface and domain walls. A domain array spontaneously formed in the absence of an external field is shown to undergo a reconstruction in the course of the gradual oxygen vacancy migration …
Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, an influence of the misfit strain and surface screening charges, as well as the role of the flexoelectric effect, have been studied by numerical modelling in the case of a rhombohedral lead zirconate-titanate ferroelectric/ferroelastic thin film with an anisotropic misfit produced by a substrate. It was established that the magnitude and sign of the misfit strain influence the domain structure and predominant directions of the polarization vector, providing misfit-dependent phases with different favourable polarization components. Whilst strong enou…
The sensitivity of ferroelectric domain walls to external stimuli makes them functional entities in nanoelectronic devices. Specifically, optically driven domain reconfiguration with in-plane polarization is advantageous and thus highly sought. Here, we show the existence of in-plane polarized sub-domains imitating a single domain state and reversible optical control of its domain wall movement in a single-crystal of ferroelectric BaTiO3. Similar optical control in the domain configuration of non-polar ferroelastic material indicates long-range ferroelectric polarization is not essential for t…
The consideration of oxygen vacancies influence on the relaxors with perovskite structure was considered in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenological theory. The theory applicability for relaxors is based on the existence of some hidden soft phonon polar mode in them, and its frequency could be zero at some negative temperature TC*. Main attention was paid to PZN-PLZT relaxor described by formula 0.3Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.7(Pb0.96La0.04(ZrxTi1-x)0.99O3) with x = 0.52, where earlier experimental investigation of oxygen vacancies influence on the polar properties was performed and…
Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is one of the most promising multiferroics with a sufficiently high ferroelectric (FE) and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures, and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling coefficient at room temperature, and thus it is highly sensitive to the impact of cross-influence of applied electric and magnetic fields. According to the urgent demands of nanotechnology miniaturization for ultra-high density data storage in advanced nonvolatile memory cells, it is very important to reduce the sizes of multiferroic nanoparticles in the self-assembled arrays without serious deterioratio…
A microscopic model for describing ferroelectric nanoparticles is proposed which allows us to calculate the polarization as a function of an external electric field, the temperature, the defect concentration and the particle size. The interaction of the constituents of the material, arranged in layers, depends on both the coupling strength at the surface and that of defect shells in addition to the bulk values. The analysis is based on an Ising model in a transverse field, modified in such a manner to study the influence of size and doping effects on the hysteresis loop of the nanoparticles. U…
In the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach coupled with electrostatic equations, we performed finite element modeling of the polarization behavior in a ferroelectric barium titanate core covered with a tunable paraelectric strontium titanate shell placed in a polymer or liquid medium. A stable two-dimensional vortex is formed in the core after a zero-field relaxation of an initial random or poly-domain distribution of the polarization, where the vortex axis is directed along one of the core crystallographic axes. Subsequently, sinusoidal pulses of a homogeneous electric field …
