We consider quadratic optimization in variables $(x,y)$ where $0\le x\le y$, and $y\in\{0,1\}^n$. Such binary $y$ are commonly refered to as "indicator" or "switching" variables and occur commonly in applications. One approach to such problems is based on representing or approximating the convex hull of the set $\{ (x,xx^T, yy^T) : 0\le x\le y\in\{0,1\}^n\}$. A representation for the case $n=1$ is known and has been widely used. We give an exact representation for the case $n=2$ by starting with a disjunctive representation for the convex hull and then eliminating auxilliary variables and constraints that do not change the projection onto the original variables. An alternative derivation for this representation leads to an appealing conjecture for a simplified representation of the convex hull for $n=2$ when the product term $y_1y_2$ is ignored.
Let V be a semialgebraic set parameterized by quadratic polynomials over a quadratic set T. This paper studies semidefinite representation of its convex hull by projections of spectrahedra (defined by linear matrix inequalities). When T is defined by a single quadratic constraint, we prove that its convex hull is equal to the first order moment type semidefinite relaxation of $V$, up to taking closures. Similar results hold when every quadratic polynomial is homogeneous and T is defined by two homogeneous quadratic constraints,or V is defined by rational quadratic parameterizations.
A quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) is an optimization problem in which the objective function is a quadratic function and the feasible region is defined by quadratic constraints. Solving non-convex QCQP to global optimality is a well-known NP-hard problem and a traditional approach is to use convex relaxations and branch-and-bound algorithms. This paper makes a contribution in this direction by showing that the exact convex hull of a general quadratic equation intersected with any bounded polyhedron is second-order cone representable. We present a simple constructive proof of…
A branch flow model (BFM) is used to formulate the AC power flow in general networks. For each branch/line, the BFM contains a nonconvex quadratic equality. A mathematical formulation of its convex hull is proposed, which is the tightest convex relaxation of this quadratic equation. The convex hull formulation consists of a second order cone inequality and a linear inequality within the physical bounds of power flows. The convex hull formulation is analytically proved and geometrically validated. An optimal scheduling problem of distributed energy storage (DES) in radial distribution systems w…
In this paper, we study the mixed-integer nonlinear set given by a separable quadratic constraint on continuous variables, where each continuous variable is controlled by an additional indicator. This set occurs pervasively in optimization problems with uncertainty and in machine learning. We show that optimization over this set is NP-hard. Despite this negative result, we characterize the structure of the convex hull, and show that it can be formally studied using polyhedral theory. Moreover, we show that although perspective relaxation in the literature for this set fails to match the struct…
A classical approach for obtaining valid inequalities for a set involves weighted aggregations of the inequalities that describe such set. When the set is described by linear inequalities, thanks to the Farkas lemma, we know that every valid inequality can be obtained using aggregations. When the inequalities describing the set are two quadratics, Yildiran showed that the convex hull of the set is given by at most two aggregated inequalities. In this work, we study the case of a set described by three or more quadratic inequalities. We show that, under technical assumptions, the convex hull of…
We consider the nonconvex set $\mathcal S_n = \{(x,X,z): X = x x^T, \; x (1-z) =0,\; x \geq 0,\; z \in \{0,1\}^n\}$, which is closely related to the feasible region of several difficult nonconvex optimization problems such as the best subset selection and constrained portfolio optimization. Utilizing ideas from convex analysis and disjunctive programming, we obtain an explicit description for the closure of the convex hull of $\mathcal S_2$ in the space of original variables. In order to generate valid inequalities corresponding to supporting hyperplanes of the convex hull of $\mathcal S_2$, w…
Quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) are a fundamental class of optimization problems well-known to be NP-hard in general. In this paper we study sufficient conditions for a convex hull result that immediately implies that the standard semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation of a QCQP is tight. We begin by outlining a general framework for proving such sufficient conditions. Then using this framework, we show that the convex hull result holds whenever the quadratic eigenvalue multiplicity, a parameter capturing the amount of symmetry present in a given problem, is large enough. O…

We consider the convex quadratic optimization problem with indicator variables and arbitrary constraints on the indicators. We show that a convex hull description of the associated mixed-integer set in an extended space with a quadratic number of additional variables consists of a single positive semidefinite constraint (explicitly stated) and linear constraints. In particular, convexification of this class of problems reduces to describing a polyhedral set in an extended formulation. While the vertex representation of this polyhedral set is exponential and an explicit linear inequality descri…
We study the convex hull of the graph of a quadratic function $f(\mathbf{x})=\sum_{ij\in E}x_ix_j$, where the sum is over the edge set of a graph $G$ with vertex set $\{1,\dots,n\}$. Using an approach proposed by Gupte et al. (Discrete Optimization $\textbf{36}$, 2020, 100569), we investigate minimal extended formulations using additional variables $y_{ij}$, $1\leq i<j\leq n$, representing the products $x_ix_j$. The basic idea is to identify a set of facets of the Boolean Quadric Polytope which is sufficient for characterizing the convex hull for the given graph. Our main results are extended …
In this paper, we study the convex quadratic optimization problem with indicator variables. For the bivariate case, we describe the convex hull of the epigraph in the original space of variables, and also give a conic quadratic extended formulation. Then, using the convex hull description for the bivariate case as a building block, we derive an extended SDP relaxation for the general case. This new formulation is stronger than other SDP relaxations proposed in the literature for the problem, including Shor's SDP relaxation, the optimal perspective relaxation as well as the optimal rank-one rel…
The Helton-Nie Conjecture (HNC) is the proposition that every convex semialgebraic set is a spectrahedral shadow. Here we prove that HNC is equivalent to another propo- sition related to quadratically constrained quadratic programming. Namely, that the convex hull of the rank-one elements of any spectrahedron is a spectrahedral shadow. In the case of compact convex semialgebraic sets, the spectrahedra may be taken to be compact. We illustrate the relationship between spetrahedra and these convex subsets with examples.
We study a finite-dimensional continuous-time optimal control problem on finite horizon for a controlled diffusion driven by Brownian motion, in the linear-quadratic case. We admit stochastic coefficients, possibly depending on an underlying independent marked point process, so that our model is general enough to include controlled switching systems where the switching mechanism is not required to be Markovian. The problem is solved by means of a Riccati equation, which a backward stochastic differential equation driven by the Bronwian motion and by the random measure associated to the marked …
In this paper, we consider a linear quadratic (LQ) leader-follower stochastic differential game for regime switching diffusions with mean-field interactions. One of the salient features of this paper is that conditional mean-field terms are included in the state equation and cost functionals. Based on stochastic maximum principles (SMPs), the follower's problem and the leader's problem are solved sequentially and an open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium is obtained. Further, with the help of the so-called four-step scheme, the corresponding Hamiltonian systems for the two players are decoupled and…
We show {\it semidefinite programming} (SDP) feasibility problem is equivalent to solving a {\it convex hull relaxation} (CHR) for a finite system of quadratic equations. On the one hand, this offers a simple description of SDP. On the other hand, this equivalence makes it possible to describe a version of the {\it Triangle Algorithm} for SDP feasibility based on solving CHR. Specifically, the Triangle Algorithm either computes an approximation to the least-norm feasible solution of SDP, or using its {\it distance duality}, provides a separation when no solution within a prescribed norm exists…
We consider the Generalized Trust Region Subproblem (GTRS) of minimizing a nonconvex quadratic objective over a nonconvex quadratic constraint. A lifting of this problem recasts the GTRS as minimizing a linear objective subject to two nonconvex quadratic constraints. Our first main contribution is structural: we give an explicit description of the convex hull of this nonconvex set in terms of the generalized eigenvalues of an associated matrix pencil. This result may be of interest in building relaxations for nonconvex quadratic programs. Moreover, this result allows us to reformulate the GTRS…
The convex hull of a set of points, $C$, serves to expose extremal properties of $C$ and can help identify elements in $C$ of high interest. For many problems, particularly in the presence of noise, the true vertex set (and facets) may be difficult to determine. One solution is to expand the list of high interest candidates to points lying near the boundary of the convex hull. We propose a quadratic program for the purpose of stratifying points in a data cloud based on proximity to the boundary of the convex hull. For each data point, a quadratic program is solved to determine an associated we…
We propose a successive generation of cutting inequalities for binary quadratic optimization problems. Multiple cutting inequalities are successively generated for the convex hull of the set of the optimal solutions $\subset \{0, 1\}^n$, while the standard cutting inequalities are used for the convex hull of the feasible region. An arbitrary linear inequality with integer coefficients and the right-hand side value in integer is considered as a candidate for a valid inequality. The validity of the linear inequality is determined by solving a conic relaxation of a subproblem such as the doubly n…

In certain electricity markets, because of non-convexities that arise from their operating characteristics, generators that follow the independent system operator's (ISO's) decisions may fail to recover their cost through sales of energy at locational marginal prices. Discriminatory side payments are made by the ISO to incentivize the compliance of generators. Convex hull pricing is a uniform pricing scheme that minimizes these side payments. The Lagrangian dual problem of the unit commitment problem has been used to determine convex hull prices. However, this approach is computationally expen…
A recent series of papers has examined the extension of disjunctive-programming techniques to mixed-integer second-order-cone programming. For example, it has been shown---by several authors using different techniques---that the convex hull of the intersection of an ellipsoid, $E$, and a split disjunction, $(l - x_j)(x_j - u) \le 0$ with $l < u$, equals the intersection of $E$ with an additional second-order-cone representable (SOCr) set. In this paper, we study more general intersections of the form $K \cap Q$ and $K \cap Q \cap H$, where $K$ is a SOCr cone, $Q$ is a nonconvex cone defined by…
This paper thoroughly investigates stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problems with the Markovian regime switching system, where the coefficients of the state equation and the weighting matrices of the cost functional are random. We prove the solvability of the stochastic Riccati equation under the uniform convexity condition and obtain the closed-loop representation of the open-loop optimal control using the unique solvability of the corresponding stochastic Riccati equation. Moreover, by applying Itô's formula with jumps, we get a representation of the cost functional on a Hilbert s…

We study the minimization of a rank-one quadratic with indicators and show that the underlying set function obtained by projecting out the continuous variables is supermodular. Although supermodular minimization is, in general, difficult, the specific set function for the rank-one quadratic can be minimized in linear time. We show that the convex hull of the epigraph of the quadratic can be obtaining from inequalities for the underlying supermodular set function by lifting them into nonlinear inequalities in the original space of variables. Explicit forms of the convex-hull description are giv…
In this paper, we study a stochastic linear-quadratic control problem with random coefficients and regime switching on a horizon $[0,T\wedgeτ]$, where $τ$ is a given random jump time for the underlying state process and $T$ is a constant. We obtain an explicit optimal state feedback control and explicit optimal cost value by solving a system of stochastic Riccati equations (SREs) with jumps on $[0,T\wedgeτ]$. By the decomposition approach stemming from filtration enlargement theory, we express the solution of the system of SREs with jumps in terms of another system of SREs involving only Brown…
In this paper, we investigate the open-loop and weak closed-loop solvabilities of stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem of Markovian regime switching system. Interestingly, these two solvabilities are equivalent. We first provide an alternative characterization of the open-loop solvability of the LQ problem using the perturbation approach. Then, we study the weak closed-loop solvability of the LQ problem of Markovian regime switching system, and establish the equivalent relationship between open-loop and weak closed-loop solvabilities. Finally, we present an examp…
This paper investigates the stochastic linear quadratic (LQ, for short) optimal control problem of Markov regime switching system. The representation of the cost functional for the stochastic LQ optimal control problem of Markov regime switching system is derived using the technique of It{ô}'s formula. For the stochastic LQ optimal control problem of Markov regime switching system, we establish the equivalence between the open-loop (closed-loop) solvability and the existence of an adapted solution to the corresponding forward-backward stochastic differential equation with constraint (the exist…
We study quadratic optimization with indicator variables and an M-matrix, i.e., a PSD matrix with non-positive off-diagonal entries, which arises directly in image segmentation and portfolio optimization with transaction costs, as well as a substructure of general quadratic optimization problems. We prove, under mild assumptions, that the minimization problem is solvable in polynomial time by showing its equivalence to a submodular minimization problem. To strengthen the formulation, we decompose the quadratic function into a sum of simple quadratic functions with at most two indicator variabl…
In this paper we provide a set of stability conditions for linear time-varying networked control systems with arbitrary topologies using a piecewise quadratic switching stabilization approach with multiple quadratic Lyapunov functions. We use this set of stability conditions to provide a novel iterative low-complexity algorithm that must be updated and optimized in discrete time for the design of a sparse observer-controller network, for a given plant network with an arbitrary topology. We employ distributed observers by utilizing the output of other subsystems to improve the stability of each…
In this paper, we consider convex quadratic optimization problems with indicator variables when the matrix $Q$ defining the quadratic term in the objective is sparse. We use a graphical representation of the support of $Q$, and show that if this graph is a path, then we can solve the associated problem in polynomial time. This enables us to construct a compact extended formulation for the closure of the convex hull of the epigraph of the mixed-integer convex problem. Furthermore, we propose a novel decomposition method for general (sparse) $Q$, which leverages the efficient algorithm for the p…
Quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs) are a highly expressive class of nonconvex optimization problems. While QCQPs are NP-hard in general, they admit a natural convex relaxation via the standard (Shor) semidefinite program (SDP) relaxation. Towards understanding when this relaxation is exact, we study general QCQPs and their (projected) SDP relaxations. We present sufficient (and in some cases, also necessary) conditions for objective value exactness (the condition that the objective values of the QCQP and its SDP relaxation coincide) and convex hull exactness (the condition th…
We describe strong convex valid inequalities for conic quadratic mixed 0-1 optimization. These inequalities can be utilized for solving numerous practical nonlinear discrete optimization problems from value-at-risk minimization to queueing system design, from robust interdiction to assortment optimization through appropriate conic quadratic mixed 0-1 relaxations. The inequalities exploit the submodularity of the binary restrictions and are based on the polymatroid inequalities over binaries for the diagonal case. We prove that the convex inequalities completely describe the convex hull of a si…
Balas introduced disjunctive cuts in the 1970s for mixed-integer linear programs. Several recent papers have attempted to extend this work to mixed-integer conic programs. In this paper we study the structure of the convex hull of a two-term disjunction applied to the second-order cone, and develop a methodology to derive closed-form expressions for convex inequalities describing the resulting convex hull. Our approach is based on first characterizing the structure of undominated valid linear inequalities for the disjunction and then using conic duality to derive a family of convex, possibly n…
This paper tackles state feedback control of switched linear systems under arbitrary switching. We propose a data-driven control framework that allows to compute a stabilizing state feedback using only a finite set of observations of trajectories with quadratic and sum of squares (SOS) Lyapunov functions. We do not require any knowledge on the dynamics or the switching signal, and as a consequence, we aim at solving \emph{uniform} stabilization problems in which the feedback is stabilizing for all possible switching sequences. In order to generalize the solution obtained from trajectories to t…
