We study the stationary Boltzmann equation in a thin slab for a rarefied gas for which the molecular mean free path is comparable to the film thickness. We prove that there exists a solution which converges, in the hydrodynamic limit, to a density Maxwellian -- this density is obtained as the solution to the generalized Reynolds equation. The convergence is proved using a truncated Hilbert expansion by carefully estimating the remainder.
We provide a rigorous derivation of the compressible Reynolds system as a singular limit of the compressible (barotropic) Navier-Stokes system on a thin domain. In particular, the existence of solutions to the Navier-Stokes system with non-homogeneous boundary conditions is shown that may be of independent interest. Our approach is based on new a priori bounds available for the pressure law of hard sphere type. Finally, uniqueness for the limit problem is established in the 1D case.

We present the arising of the Fick cross-diffusion system of equations for fluid mixtures from the multi-species Boltzmann in a rigorous manner in Sobolev spaces. To this end, we formally show that, in a diffusive scaling, the hydrodynamical limit of the kinetic system is the Fick model supplemented with a closure relation and we give explicit formulae for the macroscopic diffusion coefficients from the Boltzmann collision operator. Then, we provide a perturbative Cauchy theory in Sobolev spaces for the constructed Fick system, which turns out to be a dilated parabolic equation. We finally pro…
In this paper, we rigorously derive a Boltzmann equation for mixtures from the many body dynamics of two types of hard sphere gases. We prove that the microscopic dynamics of two gases with different masses and diameters is well defined, and introduce the concept of a two parameter BBGKY hierarchy to handle the non-symmetric interaction of these gases. As a corollary of the derivation, we prove Boltzmann's propagation of chaos assumption for the case of a mixtures of gases.
We derive the incompressible Euler equations with heat convection with the no-penetration boundary condition from the Boltzmann equation with the diffuse boundary in the hydrodynamic limit for the scale of large Reynold number. Inspired by the recent framework in [30], we consider the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with no-slip boundary conditions as an intermediary approximation and develop a Hilbert-type expansion of the Boltzmann equation around the global Maxwellian that allows the nontrivial heat transfer by convection in the limit. To justify our expansion and the limit, a new direct estim…
This paper provides the first rigorous derivation of a binary-ternary Boltzmann equation describing the kinetic properties of a dense hard-spheres gas, where particles undergo either binary or ternary instantaneous interactions, while preserving momentum and energy. An important challenge we overcome in deriving this equation is related to providing a mathematical framework that allows us to detect both binary and ternary interactions. Furthermore, this paper introduces new algebraic and geometric techniques in order to eventually decouple binary and ternary interactions and understand the way…
We study Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation when quantum effects are taken into account in dilute gas dynamics. By employing new estimates on trilinear terms of collision kernels, we prove the global existence of the classical solution to Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation near equilibrium. Furthermore, the limit from Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation to incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations is justified rigorously. The corresponding formal analysis was given in the thesis of Zakrevskiy \cite{Zakrevskiy}
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular regime of small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on an unbounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space with a compact boundary. We perform the singular limit in the framework of weak solutions and identify the Euler-Boussinesq system as the target problem.
In this paper, we present a rigorous derivation of a new kinetic equation describing the limiting behavior of a classical system of particles with three particle elastic instantaneous interactions, which are modeled using a non-symmetric version of a ternary distance. The ternary collisional operator we derive can be seen as the first step towards obtaining a toy model for a non-ideal gas where higher order interactions are taken into account.
This paper justifies the compressible Euler and acoustic limits from quantum Boltzmann equation with Fermi-Dirac statistics (briefly, BFD) rigorously. This limit was formally derived in Zakrevskiy's thesis \cite{Zakrevskiy} by moment method. We employ the Hilbert approach. The forms of the classical compressible Euler system and the one derived from BFD are different. Our proof is based on the analysis of the nonlinear implicit transformation of these two forms, and a few novel nonlinear estimates.
The Boltzmann H-theorem implies that the solution to the Boltzmann equation tends to an equilibrium, that is, a Maxwellian when time tends to infinity. This has been proved in varies settings when the initial energy is finite. However, when the initial energy is infinite, the time asymptotic state is no longer described by a Maxwellian, but a self-similar solution obtained by Bobylev-Cercignani. The purpose of this paper is to rigorously justify this for the spatially homogeneous problem with Maxwellian molecule type cross section without angular cutoff.
We justify the Villani conjecture on the smoothing effect for measure value solutions to the space homogeneous Boltzmann equation of Maxwellian type cross sections. This is the first rigorous proof of the smoothing effect for any measure value initial data except the single Dirac mass, which gives the optimal description on the regularity of solutions for positive time, caused by the singularity in the cross section. The main new ingredient in the proof is the introduction of a time degenerate coercivity estimate by using the microlocal analysis.
The Boltzmann equation is studied without the cutoff assumption. Under a perturbative setting, a unique global solution of the Cauchy problem of the equation is established in a critical Chemin-Lerner space. In order to analyse the collisional term of the equation, a Chemin-Lerner norm is combined with a non-isotropic norm with respect to a velocity variable, which yields an apriori estimate for an energy estimate. Together with local existence following from commutator estimates and the Hahn-Banach extension theorem, the desired solution is obtained. Also, the non-negativity of the solution i…
A nonlinear Poisson--Boltzmann equation with transmission boundary conditions at the interface between two materials is investigated. The model describes the electrostatic potential generated by a vector of ion concentrations in a periodic multiphase medium with dilute solid particles. The key issue is that the interfacial transfer allows jumps and thus discontinuous solutions of the problem. Based on variational techniques, we derive the homogenisation of the discontinuous problem subject to inhomogeneous transmission interface conditions. Moreover, we establish a rigorous residual error esti…
We study a continuous data assimilation algorithm proposed by Azouani, Olson, and Titi (AOT) in the context of an unknown Reynolds number. We determine the large-time error between the true solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations and the assimilated solution due to discrepancy between an approximate Reynolds number and the physical Reynolds number. Additionally, we develop an algorithm that can be run in tandem with the AOT algorithm to recover both the true solution and the Reynolds number (or equivalently the true viscosity) using only spatially discrete velocity measurements. The algorit…
We provide a rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation as the mesoscopic limit of systems of hard spheres, or Newtonian particles interacting via a short-range potential, as the number of particles $N$ goes to infinity and the characteristic length of interaction $\e$ simultaneously goes to $0,$ in the Boltzmann-Grad scaling $N \e^{d-1} \equiv 1.$ The time of validity of the convergence is a fraction of the average time of first collision, due to a limitation of the time on which one can prove uniform estimates for the BBGKY and Boltzmann hierarchies. Our proof relies on the fundamental id…
We develop a rigorous theory of hard-sphere dynamics in the kinetic regime, away from thermal equilibrium. In the low density limit, the empirical density obeys a law of large numbers and the dynamics is governed by the Boltzmann equation. Deviations from this behaviour are described by dynamical correlations, which can be fully characterized for short times. This provides both a fluctuating Boltzmann equation and large deviation asymptotics.
Consider 3D Boltzmann equation in convex domains with diffusive-reflection boundary condition. We study the hydrodynamic limits as the Knudsen number and Strouhal number $ε\rightarrow 0^+$. Using the Hilbert expansion, we rigorously justify that the solution of stationary/evolutionary problem converges to that of the steady/unsteady Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. This is the first paper to justify the hydrodynamic limits of nonlinear Boltzmann equations with hard-sphere collision kernel in bounded domain in the $L^{\infty}$ sense. The proof relies on a novel analysis on the boundary layer effec…
For multispecies ions, we study boundary layer solutions of charge conserving Poisson-Boltzmann (CCPB) equations [50] (with a small parameter ǫ) over a finite one-dimensional (1D) spatial domain, subjected to Robin type boundary conditions with variable coefficients. Hereafter, 1D boundary layer solutions mean that as ǫ approaches zero, the profiles of solutions form boundary layers near boundary points and become flat in the interior domain. These solutions are related to electric double layers with many applications in biology and physics. We rigorously prove the asymptotic behaviors of 1D b…
The convergence of solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations set in a domain with boundary to solutions of the Euler equations in the large Reynolds number limit is a challenging open problem both in 2 and 3 space dimensions. In particular it is distinct from the question of existence in the large of a smooth solution of the initial-boundary value problem for the Euler equations. The present paper proposes three results in that direction. First, if the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfy a slip boundary condition with vanishing slip coefficient in the large Reynolds …
The rigorous derivation of the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation from more fundamental quantum many-particle systems is a challenging open problem in mathematics. In this paper, we exam the weak coupling limit of quantum N-particle dynamics. We assume the integral of the microscopic interaction is zero and we assume W^{4,1} per-particle regularity on the coressponding BBGKY sequence so that we can rigorously commute limits and integrals. We prove that, if the BBGKY sequence does converge in some weak sense, then this weak-coupling limit must satisfy the infinite quantum Maxwell-Boltzmann hierarchy in…
A linear Boltzmann equation with nonautonomous collision operator is rigorously derived in the Boltzmann-Grad limit for the deterministic dynamics of a Rayleigh gas where a tagged particle is undergoing hard-sphere collisions with heterogeneously distributed background particles, which do not interact among each other. The validity of the linear Boltzmann equation holds for arbitrary long times under moderate assumptions on spatial continuity and higher moments of the initial distributions of the tagged particle and the heterogeneous, non-equilibrium distribution of the background. The empiric…
The Boltzmann-Enskog equation for a hard sphere gas is known to have so called microscopic solutions, i.e., solutions of the form of time-evolving empirical measures of a finite number of hard spheres. However, the precise mathematical meaning of these solutions should be discussed, since the formal substitution of empirical measures into the equation is not well-defined. Here we give a rigorous mathematical meaning to the microscopic solutions to the Boltzmann-Enskog equation by means of a suitable series representation.
In this work, we mainly concern the limiting behavior of the electromagnetic field of two species Vlasov-Maxwell-Botlzmann system in diffusive limits. As knudsen numbers goes to zero, the electric magnetic and magnetic field may perserve or vanish. We verify rigorously Navier-Stokes, Navier-Stokes-Poisson and Navier-Stokes Maxwell limit of the two species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system on the torus in three dimension. The justification is based on the unified and uniform estimates of solutions to the dimensionless Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann. The uniform estimates of solutions are obtained by em…
In this paper we present a rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation in a compact domain with diffuse reflection boundary conditions. We consider a system of $N$ hard spheres of diameter $ε$ in a box $Λ:= [0, 1] \times (R/Z)^2$. When a particle meets the boundary of the domain, it is instantaneously reinjected into the box with a random direction, and conserving kinetic energy. We prove that the first marginal of the process converges in the scaling $Nε^2 = 1$, $ε\rightarrow 0$ to the solution of the Boltzmann equation, with the same short time restriction of Lanford's classical theorem.
A rigorous derivation of point vortex systems from kinetic equations has been a challenging open problem, due to singular layers in the inviscid limit, giving a large velocity gradient in the Boltzmann equations. In this paper, we derive the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff point-vortex system from the hydrodynamic limits of the Boltzmann equations. We construct Boltzmann solutions by the Hilbert-type expansion associated to the point vortices solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations. We give a precise pointwise estimate for the solution of the Boltzmann equations with small Strouhal number and Knudsen …
In the paper the possible approaches to the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann kinetic equation with hard sphere collisions from underlying dynamics are considered. In particular, a formalism for the description of the evolution of infinitely many hard spheres within the framework of marginal observables in the Boltzmann--Grad scaling limit is developed. Also we give consideration to one more approach of the description of the kinetic evolution of hard spheres in terms of a one-particle distribution function governed by the non-Markovian generalization of the Enskog equation and the Boltzman…
In gas dynamics, the connection between the continuum physics model offered by the Navier-Stokes equations and the heat equation and the molecular model offered by the kinetic theory of gases has been understood for some time, especially through the work of Chapman and Enskog, but it has never been established rigorously. This paper established a precise bridge between this two models for a simple linear Boltzman-like equation. Specifically a special class of solutions, the grossly determined solutions, of this kinetic model are shown to exist and satisfy closed form balance equations represen…
We investigate the diffusion asymptotics of the Boltzmann equation for gaseous mixtures, in the perturbative regime around a local Maxwellian vector whose fluid quantities solve a flux-incompressible Maxwell-Stefan system. Our framework is the torus and we consider hard-potential collision kernels with angular cutoff. As opposed to existing results about hydrodynamic limits in the mono-species case, the local Maxwellian we study here is not a local equilibrium of the mixture due to cross-interactions. By means of a hypocoercive formalism and introducing a suitable modified Sobolev norm, we bui…
