We present a new invariant, called slope, of a colored link in an integral homology sphere and use this invariant to complete the signature formula for the splice of two links. We develop a number of ways of computing the slope and a few vanishing results. Besides, we discuss the concordance invariance of the slope and establish its close relation to the Conway polynomials, on the one hand, and to the Kojima--Yamasaki $η$-function (in the univariate case) and Cochran invariants, on the other hand.
We define the slope of a colored link in an integral homology sphere, associated to admissible characters on the link group. Away from a certain singular locus, the slope is a rational function which can be regarded as a multivariate generalization of the Kojima--Yamasaki $η$-function. It is the ratio of two Conway potentials, provided that the latter makes sense; otherwise, it is a new invariant. The slope is responsible for an extra correction term in the signature formula for the splice of two links, in the previously open exceptional case where both characters are admissible. Using a simil…
Let $M_λ$ be the $λ$-component Milnor link. For $λ\ge 3$, we determine completely when a finite slope surgery along $M_λ$ yields a lens space including $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$, where {\it finite slope surgery} implies that a surgery coefficient of every component is not $\infty$. For $λ=3$ (i.e.\ the Borromean rings), there are three infinite sequences of finite slope surgeries yielding lens spaces. For $λ\ge 4$, any finite slope surgery does not yield a lens space. As a corollary, $M_λ$ for $λ\ge 3$ does not yield both $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$ by any finite slope surgery. We generalize the…
We study near-alternating links whose diagrams satisfy conditions generalized from the notion of semi-adequate links. We extend many of the results known for adequate knots relating their colored Jones polynomials to the topology of essential surfaces and the hyperbolic volume of their complements: we show that the Strong Slope Conjecture is true for near-alternating knots with spanning Jones surfaces, their colored Jones polynomials admit stable coefficients, and the stable coefficients provide two-sided bounds on the volume of the knot complement. We also discuss extensions of these results …
We describe an algorithm for computing boundary slopes of 2-bridge links. As an example, we work out the slopes of the links obtained by 1/k surgery on one component of the Borromean rings. A table of all boundary slopes of all 2-bridge links with 10 or less crossings is also included.
The slope conjecture gives a precise relation between the degree of the colored Jones polynomial of a knot and the boundary slopes of essential surfaces in the knot complement. In this note we propose a generalization of the slope conjecture to links. We prove the conjecture for all alternating and more generally adequate links. We also verify the conjecture for torus links.
In this paper, we determine geometric information on slope lengths of a large class of knots in the 3-sphere, based only on diagrammatical properties of the knots. In particular, we show such knots have meridian length strictly less than 4, and we find infinitely many families with meridian length approaching 4 from below. Finally, we present an example to show that, in contrast to the case of the regular augmented link, longitude lengths of these knots cannot be determined by a function of the number of twist regions alone.
A diagonal surface in a link exterior M is a properly embedded, incompressible, boundary incompressible surface which furthermore has the same number of boundary components and same slope on each component of the boundary of M. We derive a formula for the boundary slope of a diagonal surface in the exterior of a 2-bridge link which is analogous to the formula for the boundary slope of a 2-bridge knot found by Hatcher and Thurston. Using this formula we show that the diameter of a 2-bridge link, that is, the difference between the smallest and largest finite slopes of diagonal surfaces, is equa…
It is shown that given any link-manifold, there is an algorithm to decide if the manifold contains an embedded, essential planar surface; if it does, the algorithm will construct one. If a slope on the boundary of the link-manifold is given, there is an algorithm to determine if the slope bounds an embedded punctured-disk; if a meridian slope is given, then it can be determined if a longitude bounds an embedded punctured-disk. The methods use normal surface theory but do not follow the classical approach. Properties of minimal vertex triangulations, layered-triangulations, 0--efficient triangu…
The theory of signature invariants of links in rational homology spheres is applied to covering links of homology boundary links. From patterns and Seifert matrices of homology boundary links, an explicit formula is derived to compute signature invariants of their covering links. Using the formula, we produce fused boundary links that are positive mutants of ribbon links but are not concordant to boundary links. We also show that for any finite collection of patterns, there are homology boundary links that are not concordant to any homology boundary links admitting a pattern in the collection.
A theory of signatures for odd-dimensional links in rational homology spheres is studied via their generalized Seifert surfaces. The jump functions of signatures are shown invariant under appropriately generalized concordance and a special care is given to accommodate 1-dimensional links with mutual linking. Furthermore our concordance theory of links in rational homology spheres remains highly nontrivial after factoring out the contribution from links in integral homology spheres.
We compute the average Tristram---Levine signature of any graph link with positive weights in a three sphere, generalizing the results of Kirby and Melvin. The main tools are the Neumann's algorithm for computing the equivariant signatures of graph links and the Reciprocity Law for Dedekind sums.
It has been observed that most manifolds in the Callahan-Hildebrand-Weeks census of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. A full classification of the exceptional surgeries on the 5-chain link has recently been completed. In this article, we provide a complete classification of the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for all cusped hyperbolic surgeries on the minimally twisted 5-chain link, thereby describing the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for most hyperbolic manifolds of small complexity. The classification produces the…
We use a link invariant defined by Cimasoni-Florens to compute ρ-invariants. This generalizes results of Cochran-Teichner and Friedl on knots to the setting of links. As an application, we prove with only twelve possible exceptions that the twist knots of algebraic order two are linearly independent in the topological concordance group.
In this paper, we use `generalized Seifert surfaces' to extend the Levine-Tristram signature to colored links in S^3. This yields an integral valued function on the m-dimensional torus, where m is the number of colors of the link. The case m=1 corresponds to the Levine-Tristram signature. We show that many remarkable properties of the latter invariant extend to this m-variable generalization: it vanishes for achiral colored links, it is `piecewise continuous', and the places of the jumps are determined by the Alexander invariants of the colored link. Using a 4-dimensional interpretation and th…
We analyze properties of links which have diagrams with a small number of negative crossings. We show that if a nontrivial link has a diagram with all crossings positive except possibly one, then the signature of the link is negative. If a link diagram has two negative crossings, we show that the signature of the link is nonpositive with the exception of the left-handed Hopf link (with possible trivial components). We also characterize those links which have signature zero and diagrams with two negative crossings. In particular, we show that if a nontrivial knot has a diagram with two negative…
We give a new proof that the Levine-Tristram signatures of a link give lower bounds for the minimal sum of the genera of a collection of oriented, locally flat, disjointly embedded surfaces that the link can bound in the 4-ball. We call this minimal sum the 4-genus of the link. We also extend a theorem of Cochran, Friedl and Teichner to show that the 4-genus of a link does not increase under infection by a string link, which is a generalised satellite construction, provided that certain homotopy triviality conditions hold on the axis curves, and that enough Milnor's invariants of the infection…
Turaev showed that there is a well-defined map assigning to an oriented link L in the three-sphere a Spin structure t_0 on Sigma(L), the 2-fold cover of S^3 branched along L. We prove, generalizing results of Manolescu-Owens and Donald-Owens, that for an oriented quasi-alternating link L the signature of L equals minus four times the Heegaard Floer correction term of (Sigma(L), t_0).
It was asked by J.Birman, Williams, and L.Rudolph whether nontrivial Lorentz knots have always positive signature. Lorentz knots are examples of positive braids (in our convention they have all crossings negative so they are negative links). It was shown by L.Rudolph that positive braids have positive signature (if they represent nontrivial links). K.Murasugi has shown that nontrivial, alternating, positive links have negative signature. Here we prove in general the old folklore conjecture that nontrivial positive links have negative signature.
Relations between the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer rho invariant and signatures of links have been known for a long time, but they were only partially investigated. In order to explore them further, we develop a versatile cut-and-paste formula for the rho invariant, which allows us to manipulate manifolds in a convenient way. With the help of this tool, we give a description of the multivariable signature of a link $L$ as the rho invariant of some closed $3$-manifold $Y_L$ intrinsically associated to $L$. We study then the rho invariant of the manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery on a $L$ along integer …
Recently, Mullins calculated the Casson-Walker invariant of the 2-fold cyclic branched cover of an oriented link in S^3 in terms of its Jones polynomial and its signature, under the assumption that the 2-fold branched cover is a rational homology 3-sphere. Using elementary principles, we provide a similar calculation for the general case. In addition, we calculate the LMO invariant of the p-fold branched cover of twisted knots in S^3 in terms of the Kontsevich integral of the knot.
We study the behavior of the signature of colored links [Flo05, CF08] under the splice operation. We extend the construction to colored links in integral homology spheres and show that the signature is almost additive, with a correction term independent of the links. We interpret this correction term as the signature of a generalized Hopf link and give a simple closed formula to compute it.
We give an explicit formula for the Jones polynomial of any rational link in terms of the denominators of the canonical continued fraction of the slope of the given rational link.
We show that the twisted signature invariants of boundary link concordance derived from unitary representations of the free group are actually ordinary link concordance invariants. We also show how the discontinuity locus of this signature function is determined by Seifert matrices of the link.
The Horikawa index and the local signature are introduced for relatively minimal fibered surfaces whose general fiber is a non-hyperelliptic curve of genus $4$ with unique trigonal structure.
A classification of spanning surfaces for alternating links is provided up to genus, orientability, and a new invariant that we call aggregate slope. That is, given an alternating link, we determine all possible combinations of genus, orientability, and aggregate slope that a surface spanning that link can have. To this end, we describe a straightforward algorithm, much like Seifert's Algorithm, through which to construct certain spanning surfaces called layered surfaces. A particularly important subset of these will be what we call basic layered surfaces. We can alter these surface by perform…
We show that if $p/q$-surgery on a nontrivial knot $K$ yields the branched double cover of an alternating knot or link, then $|p/q|\leq 4g(K)+3$. This generalises a bound for lens space surgeries first established by Rasmussen. We also show that all surgery coefficients yielding the double branched cover of an alternating knot or link must be contained in an interval of width two and this full range can be realised only if $K$ is a cable knot. The work of Greene and Gibbons shows that if $S^3_{p/q}(K)$ bounds a sharp 4-manifold $X$, then the intersection form of $X$ takes the form of a changem…
We characterise positive braid links with positive Seifert form via a finite number of forbidden minors. From this we deduce a one-to-one correspondence between prime positive braid links with positive Seifert form and simply laced Dynkin diagrams, as well as a simple classification of alternating positive braid knots.
We refine prior bounds on how the multivariable signature and the nullity of a link change under link cobordisms. The formula generalizes a series of results about the 4-genus having their origins in the Murasugi-Tristram inequality, and at the same time extends previously known results about concordance invariance of the signature to a bigger set of allowed variables. Finally, we show that the multivariable signature and nullity are also invariant under $0.5$-solvable cobordism.
The Levine-Tristram signature associates to each oriented link $L$ in $S^3$ a function $σ_L \colon S^1 \to \mathbb{Z}.$ This invariant can be defined in a variety of ways, and its numerous applications include the study of unlinking numbers and link concordance. In this survey, we recall the three and four dimensional definitions of $σ_L$, list its main properties and applications, and give comprehensive references for the proofs of these statements.
In this paper, we study the Khovanov homology of an alternating virtual link $L$ and show that it is supported on $g+2$ diagonal lines, where $g$ equals the virtual genus of $L$. Specifically, we show that $Kh^{i,j}(L)$ is supported on the lines $j=2i-σ_ξ+2k-1$ for $0\leq k\leq g+1$ where $σ_{ξ^*}(L)+2g= σ_ξ(L)$ are the signatures of $L$ for a checkerboard coloring $ξ$ and its dual $ξ^*$. Of course, for classical links, the two signatures are equal and this recovers Lee's $H$-thinness result for $Kh^{*,*}(L)$. Our result applies more generally to give an upper bound for the homological width o…
The splitting number of a link is the minimal number of crossing changes between different components required to convert it into a split link. We obtain a lower bound on the splitting number in terms of the (multivariable) signature and nullity. Although very elementary and easy to compute, this bound turns out to be suprisingly efficient. In particular, it makes it a routine check to recover the splitting number of 129 out of the 130 prime links with at most 9 crossings. Also, we easily determine 16 of the 17 splitting numbers that were studied by Batson and Seed using Khovanov homology, and…
In this paper, we consider generalizations of the Alexander polynomial and signature of 2-bridge knots by considering the Gordon-Litherland bilinear forms associated to essential state surfaces of the 2-bridge knots. We show that the resulting invariants are well-defined and explore properties of these invariants. Finally we realize the boundary slopes of the essential surfaces as a difference of signatures of the knot.
Let $D$ be an oriented link diagram with the set of regions $\operatorname{r}_{D}$. We define a symmetric map (or matrix) $\operatornameτ_{D}\colon\operatorname{r}_{D}\times \operatorname{r}_{D} \to \mathbb{Z}[x]$ that gives rise to an invariant of oriented links, based on a slightly modified $S$-equivalence of Trotter and Murasugi in the space of symmetric matrices. In particular, for real $x$, the negative signature of $\operatornameτ_{D}$ corrected by the writhe is conjecturally twice the Tristram--Levine signature function, where $2x=\sqrt{t}+\frac1{\sqrt{t}}$ with $t$ being the indetermin…
This is the last of a series of papers which give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement to be homotopic in the link complement. The first paper of the series treated the case of the 2-bridge torus links, and the second paper treated the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(2n+1)$ and $(n+1)/(3n+2)$, where $n \ge 2$ is an arbitrary integer. In this paper, we first treat the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(mn+1)$ and $(n+1)/((m+1)n+m)$, where $m \ge 3$ is an arbitrary integer, and then treat the remaining cases b…
Homology of the circle with non-trivial local coefficients is trivial. From this well-known fact we deduce geometric corollaries concerning links of codimension two. In particular, the Murasugi-Tristram signatures are extended to invariants of links formed of arbitrary oriented closed codimension two submanifolds of an odd-dimensional sphere. The novelty is that the submanifolds are not assumed to be disjoint, but are transversal to each other, and the signatures are parametrized by points of the whole torus. Murasugi-Tristram inequalities and their generalizations are also extended to this se…
We define some signature invariants for a class of knotted trivalent graphs using branched covers. We relate them to classical signatures of knots and links. Finally, we explain how to compute these invariants through the example of Kinoshita's knotted theta graph.
We extend several classical invariants of links in the 3-sphere to links in so-called quasi-cylinders. These invariants include the linking number, the Seifert form, the Alexander module, the Alexander-Conway polynomial and the Murasugi-Tristram-Levine signatures.
As an extension of positive and almost positive diagrams and links, we study two classes of links we call successively almost positive and weakly successively almost positive links. We prove various properties of polynomial invariants and signatures of such links, extending previous results or answering open questions about positive or almost positive links. We discuss their minimal genus and fibering property and for the latter prove a fibering extension of Scharlemann-Thompson's theorem (valid for general links).
We define an integer valued invariant for two-component links in S^3 by counting projective SU(2) representations of the link group having non-trivial second Stiefel-Whitney class. We show that our invariant is, up to sign, the linking number of the link. Our construction generalizes that of X.-S. Lin who defined a similar invariant for knots in S^3; his invariant equals half the knot signature.
We study the asymptotics of a family of link invariants on the orbits of a smooth volume-preserving ergodic vector field on a compact domain of the 3-space. These invariants, called linear saddle invariants, include many concordance invariants and generate an infinite-dimensional vector space of link invariants. In contrast, the vector space of asymptotic linear saddle invariants is 1-dimensional, generated by the asymptotic signature. We also relate the asymptotic slice genus to the asymptotic signature.
We provide obstructions to a link in $S^3$ arising as the cross section of any number of unlinked spheres in $S^4$. Our obstructions arise from the multivariable signature, the Blanchfield form and generalised Seifert matrices. We also obtain obstructions in the case of surfaces of higher genera, leading to a lower bound on the doubly slice genus of links.
We study Heegaard Floer homology and various related invariants (such as the $h$-function) for two-component L-space links with linking number zero. For such links, we explicitly describe the relationship between the $h$-function, the Sato-Levine invariant and the Casson invariant. We give a formula for the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants of integral surgeries on two-component L-space links of linking number zero in terms of the $h$-function, generalizing a formula of Ni and Wu. As a consequence, for such links with unknotted components, we characterize L-space surgery slopes in terms of the $ν^…
We obtain new invariants of topological link concordance and homology cobordism of 3-manifolds from Hirzebruch-type intersection form defects of towers of iterated p-covers. Our invariants can extract geometric information from an arbitrary depth of the derived series of the fundamental group, and can detect torsion which is invisible via signature invariants. Applications illustrating these features include the following: (1) There are infinitely many homology equivalent rational 3-spheres which are indistinguishable via multisignatures, eta-invariants, and L2-signatures but have distinct hom…
Using the Gordon-Litherland pairing, one can define invariants (signature, nullity, determinant) for ${\mathbb Z}/2$ null-homologous links in thickened surfaces. In this paper, we study the concordance properties of these invariants. For example, if $K \subset Σ\times I$ is ${\mathbb Z}/2$ null-homologous and slice, we show that its signatures vanish and its determinants are perfect squares. These statements are derived from a cobordism result for closed unoriented surfaces in certain 4-manifolds. The Brown invariants are defined for ${\mathbb Z}/2$ null-homologous links in thickened surfaces.…
We define and calculate signature and nullity invariants for complex schemes for curves in the real projective plane. We use an analog of the Murasugi-Tristram inequality to prohibit certain schemes from being realized by real algebraic curves. We give new formulas for Casson-Gordon invariants of graph manifolds, and signatures of graph links.
