v2: 20 pages, 13 figures. Simplified proofs of main results and added two sections, one giving examples of knots with meridian lengths approaching the upper bound of 4, and one showing that there are no bounds on longitude length in terms of twist number. In this paper, we determine geometric information on slope lengths of a large class of knots in the 3-sphere, based only on diagrammatical properties of the knots. In particular, we show such knots have meridian length strictly less than 4, and we find infinitely many families with meridian length approaching 4 from below. Finally, we present an example to show that, in contrast to the case of the regular augmented link, longitude lengths of these knots cannot be determined by a function of the number of twist regions alone.
Let $M_λ$ be the $λ$-component Milnor link. For $λ\ge 3$, we determine completely when a finite slope surgery along $M_λ$ yields a lens space including $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$, where {\it finite slope surgery} implies that a surgery coefficient of every component is not $\infty$. For $λ=3$ (i.e.\ the Borromean rings), there are three infinite sequences of finite slope surgeries yielding lens spaces. For $λ\ge 4$, any finite slope surgery does not yield a lens space. As a corollary, $M_λ$ for $λ\ge 3$ does not yield both $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$ by any finite slope surgery. We generalize the…
We define the slope of a colored link in an integral homology sphere, associated to admissible characters on the link group. Away from a certain singular locus, the slope is a rational function which can be regarded as a multivariate generalization of the Kojima--Yamasaki $η$-function. It is the ratio of two Conway potentials, provided that the latter makes sense; otherwise, it is a new invariant. The slope is responsible for an extra correction term in the signature formula for the splice of two links, in the previously open exceptional case where both characters are admissible. Using a simil…
We study the geometry of fully augmented link complements in $S^3$ by looking at their link diagrams. We extend the method introduced by Thistlethwaite and Tsvietkova to fully augmented links and define a system of algebraic equations in terms of parameters coming from edges and crossings of the link diagrams. Combining it with the work of Purcell, we show that the solutions to these algebraic equations are related to the cusp shapes of fully augmented link complements. As an application we use the cusp shapes to study the commensurability classes of fully augmented links.
We study the fibration of augmented link complements. Given the diagram of an augmented link we associate a spanning surface and a graph. We then show that this surface is a fiber for the link complement if and only if the associated graph is a tree. We further show that fibration is preserved under Dehn filling on certain components of these links. This last result is then used to prove that within a very large class of links, called locally alternating augmented links, every link is fibered.
Augmented alternating links are links obtained by adding trivial components that bound twice-punctured disks to non-split reduced non-2-braid prime alternating projections. These links are known to be hyperbolic. Here, we extend to show that generalized augmented alternating links, which allow for new trivial components that bound n-punctured disks, are also hyperbolic. As an application we consider generalized belted sums of links and compute their volumes.
We study near-alternating links whose diagrams satisfy conditions generalized from the notion of semi-adequate links. We extend many of the results known for adequate knots relating their colored Jones polynomials to the topology of essential surfaces and the hyperbolic volume of their complements: we show that the Strong Slope Conjecture is true for near-alternating knots with spanning Jones surfaces, their colored Jones polynomials admit stable coefficients, and the stable coefficients provide two-sided bounds on the volume of the knot complement. We also discuss extensions of these results …
We describe an algorithm for computing boundary slopes of 2-bridge links. As an example, we work out the slopes of the links obtained by 1/k surgery on one component of the Borromean rings. A table of all boundary slopes of all 2-bridge links with 10 or less crossings is also included.
The slope conjecture gives a precise relation between the degree of the colored Jones polynomial of a knot and the boundary slopes of essential surfaces in the knot complement. In this note we propose a generalization of the slope conjecture to links. We prove the conjecture for all alternating and more generally adequate links. We also verify the conjecture for torus links.
This paper examines number theoretic and topological properties of fully augmented pretzel link complements. In particular, we determine exactly when these link complements are arithmetic and exactly which are commensurable with one another. We show these link complements realize infinitely many CM-fields as invariant trace fields, which we explicitly compute. Further, we construct two infinite families of non-arithmetic fully augmented link complements: one that has no hidden symmetries and the other where the number of hidden symmetries grows linearly with volume. This second family realizes…
For a hyperbolic link K in the thickened torus with no bigons, we show that there is a decomposition of the complement of a link L, obtained from augmenting K, into torihedra. We further decompose the torihedra into angled pyramids and finally angled tetrahedra. These fit into an angled structure on a triangulation of the link complement, and thus by [5], this shows that L is hyperbolic.
A diagonal surface in a link exterior M is a properly embedded, incompressible, boundary incompressible surface which furthermore has the same number of boundary components and same slope on each component of the boundary of M. We derive a formula for the boundary slope of a diagonal surface in the exterior of a 2-bridge link which is analogous to the formula for the boundary slope of a 2-bridge knot found by Hatcher and Thurston. Using this formula we show that the diameter of a 2-bridge link, that is, the difference between the smallest and largest finite slopes of diagonal surfaces, is equa…
It is shown that given any link-manifold, there is an algorithm to decide if the manifold contains an embedded, essential planar surface; if it does, the algorithm will construct one. If a slope on the boundary of the link-manifold is given, there is an algorithm to determine if the slope bounds an embedded punctured-disk; if a meridian slope is given, then it can be determined if a longitude bounds an embedded punctured-disk. The methods use normal surface theory but do not follow the classical approach. Properties of minimal vertex triangulations, layered-triangulations, 0--efficient triangu…
Torsion and Betti numbers for knots are special cases of more general invariants associated to a finitely generated group G and epimorphism from G to the integers. The sequence of Betti numbers is always periodic; under mild hypotheses, the sequence of torsion numbers satisfies a linear homogeneous recurrence relation with constant coeffiencts. Generally, the torsion number sequence exhibits exponential growth rate. However, again under mild hypotheses, the p-part has trivial growth for any prime p. Applications to branched cover homology for knots and links are presented.
It has been observed that most manifolds in the Callahan-Hildebrand-Weeks census of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds are obtained by surgery on the minimally twisted 5-chain link. A full classification of the exceptional surgeries on the 5-chain link has recently been completed. In this article, we provide a complete classification of the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for all cusped hyperbolic surgeries on the minimally twisted 5-chain link, thereby describing the sets of exceptional slopes and fillings for most hyperbolic manifolds of small complexity. The classification produces the…
We consider knots whose diagrams have a high amount of twisting of multiple strands. By encircling twists on multiple strands with unknotted curves, we obtain a link called a generalized augmented link. Dehn filling this link gives the original knot. We classify those generalized augmented links that are Seifert fibered, and give a torus decomposition for those that are toroidal. In particular, we find that each component of the torus decomposition is either "trivial", in some sense, or homeomorphic to the complement of a generalized augmented link. We show this structure persists under high D…
Let $F$ be an incompressible, meridionally incompressible and not boundary-parallel surface with boundary in the complement of an algebraic tangle $(B,T)$. Then $F$ separates the strings of $T$ in $B$ and the boundary slope of $F$ is uniquely determined by $(B,T)$ and hence we can define the slope of the algebraic tangle. In addition to the Conway's tangle sum, we define a natural product of two tangles. The slopes and binary operation on algebraic tangles lead an algebraic structure which is isomorphic to the rational numbers. We introduce a new knot and link class, algebraically alternating …
We describe a presentation for the augmented fundamental rack of a link in the lens space $L(p,1)$. Using this presentation, the (enhanced) counting rack invariants that have been defined for the classical links are applied to the links in $L(p,1)$. In this case, the counting rack invariants also include the information about the action of $π_{1}(L(p,1))$ on the augmented fundamental rack of a link.
For families of knots and links given in Conway notation we compute lower maximal and upper minimal bound of hyperbolic volume by using source links and augmented links.
A classification of spanning surfaces for alternating links is provided up to genus, orientability, and a new invariant that we call aggregate slope. That is, given an alternating link, we determine all possible combinations of genus, orientability, and aggregate slope that a surface spanning that link can have. To this end, we describe a straightforward algorithm, much like Seifert's Algorithm, through which to construct certain spanning surfaces called layered surfaces. A particularly important subset of these will be what we call basic layered surfaces. We can alter these surface by perform…
We show that if $p/q$-surgery on a nontrivial knot $K$ yields the branched double cover of an alternating knot or link, then $|p/q|\leq 4g(K)+3$. This generalises a bound for lens space surgeries first established by Rasmussen. We also show that all surgery coefficients yielding the double branched cover of an alternating knot or link must be contained in an interval of width two and this full range can be realised only if $K$ is a cable knot. The work of Greene and Gibbons shows that if $S^3_{p/q}(K)$ bounds a sharp 4-manifold $X$, then the intersection form of $X$ takes the form of a changem…
We propose to generalize the volume conjecture to knotted trivalent graphs and we prove the conjecture for all augmented knotted trivalent graphs. As a corollary we find that for any link L there is a link containing L for which the volume conjecture holds.
This is the last of a series of papers which give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement to be homotopic in the link complement. The first paper of the series treated the case of the 2-bridge torus links, and the second paper treated the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(2n+1)$ and $(n+1)/(3n+2)$, where $n \ge 2$ is an arbitrary integer. In this paper, we first treat the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(mn+1)$ and $(n+1)/((m+1)n+m)$, where $m \ge 3$ is an arbitrary integer, and then treat the remaining cases b…
We determine the total Culler-Shalen seminorms for the 3-manifolds W_{p/q}:=W(p/q,-) obtained by Dehn filling with slope p/q on one boundary component of the Whitehead link exterior W when p is odd. As part of the proof, we use an explicit parametrization of the eigenvalue variety of W to find a one-variable polynomial whose roots characterize characters of p-reps of π_{1}(W_{p/q}), i.e. representations with values in SL_2(C) which are parabolic on the peripheral subgroup.
It is a well-known procedure for constructing a torus knot or link that first we prepare an unknotted torus and meridian disks in the complementary solid tori of it, and second smooth the intersections of the boundary of meridian disks uniformly. Then we obtain a torus knot or link on the unknotted torus and its Seifert surface made of meridian disks. In the present paper, we generalize this procedure by a closed fake surface and show that the resultant two surfaces obtained by smoothing triple points uniformly are essential. We also show that a knot obtained by this procedure satisfies the Ne…
In this paper we study exceptional Dehn fillings on hyperbolic knot manifolds which contain an essential once-punctured torus. Let $M$ be such a knot manifold and let $β$ be the boundary slope of such an essential once-punctured torus. We prove that if Dehn filling $M$ with slope $α$ produces a Seifert fibred manifold, then $Δ(α,β)\leq 5$. Furthermore we classify the triples $(M; α,β)$ when $\D(α,β)\geq 4$. More precisely, when $\D(α,β)=5$, then $M$ is the (unique) manifold $Wh(-3/2)$ obtained by Dehn filling one boundary component of the Whitehead link exterior with slope -3/2, and $(α, β)$ i…
