Elastic properties of a granular packing show nonlinear behavior determined by its discrete structure and nonlinear inter-grain force laws. Acoustic waves show a transition from constant, pressure-dependent sound speed to a shock-wave like behavior with amplitude-determined propagation speed. This becomes increasingly visible at low static confinement pressure as the transient regime shifts to lower wave amplitudes for lower static pressure. In microgravity, confinement pressure can be orders of magnitude lower than in a ground based experiment. Also, the absence of hydrostatic gradients allows for much more homogeneous and isotropic pressure distribution. We present a novel apparatus for acoustic wave transmission measurements at such low packing pressures. A pressure control loop is implemented by a microcontroller that monitors static force sensor readings and adjusts the position of a movable wall with a linear motor until the desired pressure is reached. Measurements of acoustic waves are possible using accelerometers embedded in the granular packing as well as piezos. For excitation we use a voice coil-driven wall, with a large variety of signal shapes, frequencies and amplitudes. This enables experiments both in the linear and strongly nonlinear regime.
Static granular packings are model hard-sphere glass formers. The nature of glass transition has remained a hotly debated issue. We review recent experimental progresses in using granular materials to study glass transitions. We focus on the growth of glass order with five-fold symmetry in granular packings and relate the findings to both geometric frustration and random first-order phase transition theories.
We study the internal dynamical processes taking place in a granular packing below yield stress. At all packing fractions and down to vanishingly low applied shear, a logarithmic creep is evidenced. The experiments are analyzed under the scope of a visco-elastic model introducing an internal "fluidity" variable. For all experiments, the creep dynamics can be rescaled onto a unique curve which displays jamming at the random-close-packing limit. At each packing fraction, a stress value is evidenced, corresponding to the onset of internal granular reorganisation leading to a slowing down the cree…
In two-dimensional rotating drum experiments, we find two separate influences of the packing fraction of a granular heap on its stability. For a fixed grain shape, the stability increases with packing fraction. However, in determining the relative stability of different grain shapes, those with the lowest average packing fractions tend to form the most stable heaps. We also show that only the configuration close to the surface of the pile figures prominently.
Random packings of granular chains are presented as a model polymer system to investigate the contribution of entanglements to strain-stiffening in the absence of Brownian motion. The chain packings are sheared in triaxial compression experiments. For short chain lengths, these packings yield when the shear stress exceeds a the scale of the confining pressure, similar to packings of spherical particles. In contrast, packings of chains which are long enough to form loops exhibit strain-stiffening, in which the effective stiffness of the material increases with strain, similar to many polymer ma…
A two-dimensional granular packing under horizontally circular shaking exhibits various collective motion modes depending on the strength of the oscillation and the global packing density. For intermediate packing density and oscillation amplitude, a high density phase travels along the container's side wall in clockwise direction, while the oscillation itself is anti-clockwise. Further increasing packing density towards the hexagonal packing, the whole packing rotates collectively in clockwise direction. The core of the packing rotates as a solid and is separated from the boundary by a fluid-…
We study the structural properties of two-dimensional granular packings prepared by random deposition from a source line. We consider a class of random ballistic deposition models based on single-particle relaxation rules controlled by a critical angle, and we show that these local rules can be formulated as rolling friction in the framework of dynamic methods for the simulation of granular materials. We find that a packing prepared by random deposition models is generically unstable, and undergoes dynamic rearrangements. As a result, the dynamic method leads systematically to a higher solid f…
We study experimentally the dynamics of a dense intruder sinking under gravity inside a vibrated 2D granular packing. The surrounding flow patterns are characterized and the falling trajectories are interpreted in terms of an effectivive friction coefficient related to the intruder mean descent velocity (flow rules). At higher confining pressures i.e. close to jamming, a transition to intermittent dynamics is evidenced and displays anomalous "on-off" blockade statistics. A systematic analysis of the flow rules, obtained for different intruder sizes, either in the flowing regime or averaged ove…
Structural characteristics are considered to be the dominant factors in determining the effective properties of granular media, particularly in the scope of transport phenomena. Towards improved heat management, thermal transport in granular media requires an improved fundamental understanding. In this study, the effects of packing structure on heat transfer in granular media are evaluated at macro- and grain-scales. At the grain-scale, a gas-solid coupling heat transfer model is adapted into a discrete-element-method to simulate this transport phenomenon. The numerical framework is validated …
In this letter, we present the first experimental study of bridge structures in three-dimensional dry granular packings. When bridges are small, they are predominantly 'linear', and have an exponential size distribution. Larger, predominantly 'complex' bridges, are confirmed to follow a power-law size distribution. Our experiments, which use X-ray tomography, are in good agreement with the simulations presented here, for the distribution of sizes, end-to-end lengths, base extensions and orientations of predominantly linear bridges. Quantitative differences between the present experiment and ea…
Scattering methods are widespread used to characterize the structure and constituents of matter on small length scales. This motivates this introductory text on identifying prospective approaches to scattering-based methods for granular media. A survey to light scattering by particles and particle ensembles is given. It is elaborated why the established scattering methods using X-rays and visible light cannot in general be transferred to granular media. Spectroscopic measurements using Terahertz radiation are highlighted as they to probe the scattering properties of granular media, which are s…
We investigate the onset of irreversibility in a dense granular medium subjected to cyclic shear in a split-bottom geometry. To probe the micro and mesoscale we image bead trajectories in 3D throughout a series of shear strain oscillations. Though beads lose and regain contact with neighbors during a cycle, the topology of the contact network exhibits reversible properties for small oscillation amplitudes. With increasing reversal amplitude a transition to an irreversible diffusive regime occurs.
This paper analyzes the compaction behavior of assemblies composed of soft (elastic) spherical particles beyond the jammed state, using three-dimensional non-smooth contact dynamic simulations. The assemblies of particles are characterized using the evolution of the packing fraction, the coordination number, and the von Misses stress distribution within the particles as the confining stress increases. The packing fraction increases and tends toward a maximum value close to $1$, and the mean coordination number increases as a square root of the packing fraction. As the confining stress increase…

Intuition tells us that a rolling or spinning sphere will eventually stop due to the presence of friction and other dissipative interactions. The resistance to rolling and spinning/twisting torque that stops a sphere also changes the microstructure of a granular packing of frictional spheres by increasing the number of constraints on the degrees of freedom of motion. We perform discrete element modeling simulations to construct sphere packings implementing a range of frictional constraints under a pressure-controlled protocol. Mechanically stable packings are achievable at volume fractions and…
The topological structure resulting from the network of contacts between grains (contact network) is studied for very large samples of disorderly-packed monosized spheres with densities ranging from 0.58 to 0.64. The hierarchical organization of such a structure is studied by means of a topological map which starts from a given sphere and moves outwards in concentric shells through the contact network. We find that the topological density of disordered sphere packing is larger than the topological density of equivalent lattice sphere packings.
The developing structure in systems of compacting ductile grains were studied experimentally in two and three dimensions. In both dimensions, the peaks of the radial distribution function were reduced, broadened, and shifted compared with those observed in hard disk- and sphere systems. The geometrical three--grain configurations contributing to the second peak in the radial distribution function showed few but interesting differences between the initial and final stages of the two dimensional compaction. The evolution of the average coordination number as function of packing fraction is compa…
We report experimental results on the dynamics of a granular packing submitted to high-intensity focused ultrasound. Acoustic radiation pressure is shown to remotely induce local rearrangements within a pile as well as global motion around the focal spot in an initially jammed system. We demonstrate that this fluidization process is intermittent for a range of acoustic pressures and hysteretic when the pressure is cycled. Such a first-order-like unjamming transition is reproduced in numerical simulations in which the acoustic pressure field is modeled by a localized external force. Further ana…
We propose an interpretation of the random close packing of granular materials as a phase transition, and discuss the possibility of experimental verification.
We experimentally study the statistics of force-chain evolution in a vertically-tapped two-dimensional granular packing by using photoelastic disks. In this experiment, the tapped granular packing is gradually compacted. During the compaction, the isotropy of grain configurations is quantified by measuring the deviator anisotropy derived from fabric tensor, and then the evolution of force-chain structure is quantified by measuring the interparticle forces and force-chain orientational order parameter. As packing fraction increases, the interparticle force increases and finally saturates to an …
We investigate the flow and jamming through small apertures of a column of granular disks via a pseudo-dynamic model. We focus on the effect that the preparation of the granular assembly has on the size of the avalanches obtained. Ensembles of packings with different mean packing fractions are created by tapping the system at different intensities. Surprisingly, packing fraction is not a good indicator of the ability of the deposit to jam a given orifice. Different mean avalanche sizes are obtained for deposits with the same mean packing fraction that were prepared with very different tap inte…
We implement the Wang-Landau algorithm to sample with equal probabilities the static configurations of a model granular system. The "non-interacting rigid arch model" used is based on the description of static configurations by means of splitting the assembly of grains into sets of stable arches. This technique allows us to build the entropy as a function of the volume of the packing for large systems. We make a special note of the details that have to be considered when defining the microstates and proposing the moves for the correct sampling in these unusual models. We compare our results wi…
We have performed a novel experiment on granular packs composed of automatically swelling particles. By analyzing the Voronoi structure of packs going through the jamming transition, we show that the local configuration of a jamming pack is strikingly similar to that of a glass-forming liquid, both in terms of their universal area distribution and the process of defect annealing. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an unambiguous structural signature of the jamming transition can be obtained from the pair correlation functions of a pack. Our study provides insights into the structural properties …
We introduce a 2-dimensional lattice model of granular matter. We use a combination of proof and simulation to demonstrate an order/disorder phase transition in the model, to which we associate the granular phenomenon of random close packing.
The transmission rules of interparticle forces between granular particles were analyzed, and a discrete packing model was proposed to calculate the static pressure at the bottom of granular material confined in a vertical column. The mechanical analysis and numerical simulation results indicate that the silo effect is caused by the frictional contacts between border particles and inner walls, the static pressure at the bottom depends on the external load initially, and then tends to a saturation pressure (Pn) in an exponential form. The saturation pressure (Pn) is positive linear related to th…
A significant dependence on the relative humidity H for the apparent mass (Mapp) measured at the bottom of a granular packing inside a vertical tube in relative motion is demonstrated experimentally. While the predictions of Janssen's model are verified for all values of H investigated (25%< H <80%), Mapp increases with time towards a limiting value at high relative humidities (H>60%) but remains constant at lower ones (H=25%). The corresponding Janssen length is nearly independent of the tube velocity for H>60% but decreases markedly for H=25%. Other differences are observed on the motion of …
We consider the rearrangements of a vertical twodimensional granular packing induced by the withdrawal of an intruder. Here, we focus on the influence of the size of the intruder on the reorganization process. The long term evolution of the granular packing is investigated as well as the avalanche dynamics that characterize the short term rearrangements around the intruder. For small enough intruder, we observe the formation of arches that periodically destabilize and influence the reorganization dynamics of the two-dimensional packing through larger rearrangement events.
3D Computer simulations and experiments are employed to study random packings of compressible spherical grains under external confining stress. Of particular interest is the rigid ball limit, which we describe as a continuous transition in which the applied stress vanishes as (ϕ-ϕ_c)^β, where ϕis the (solid phase) volume density. This transition coincides with the onset of shear rigidity. The value of ϕ_c depends, for example, on whether the grains interact via only normal forces (giving rise to random close packings) or by a combination of normal and friction generated transverse forces (prod…
We investigate experimentally the mechanical response to shear of a 2D packing of grains across the jamming transition. First, we develop a dedicated experimental setup, together with tracking and photoelastic techniques in order to prepare the packing in a controlled fashion and to quantify the stress and strain tensors at the grain scale. Second, we install a inflating probe (a 2D "balloon"), which shears the packing with a cylindrical symmetry. We probe experimentally stresses and strains for strain amplitudes as low as $10^{-3}$ and for a range of packing fractions within $2\%$ variation a…
We introduce and simulate a two dimensional probabilistic model of granular matter at vanishing pressure. The model exhibits a perfectly sharp random loose packing density, a phenomenon that should be verifiable for real granular matter.
We experimentally study the transition from steady flow to unsteady flow in a quasi-2D granular heap when small amounts of water are added to monodisperse glass spheres. Particles flow uniformly down both sides of the heap for low water content, but unsteady flow occurs as the water content increases. The unsteady flow mode consists of a non-depositing downslope avalanche and an upslope propagating granular jump. The transition from steady to unsteady flow occurs when the slope exceeds a critical angle as a result of water-induced cohesion. Under unsteady flow conditions, the deposited heap co…
We present numerical evidence for an additional discontinuous transition inside the jammed regime for an asymmetric bidisperse granular packing upon compression. This additional transition line separates jammed states with networks of predominantly large particles from jammed networks formed by both large and small particles, and the transition is indicated by a discontinuity in the number of particles contributing to the jammed network. The additional transition line emerges from the curves of jamming transitions and terminates in an end-point where the discontinuity vanishes. The additional …
Using X-ray tomography, we experimentally investigate granular packings subject to mechanical tapping for three types of beads with different friction coefficients. We validate Edwards volume ensemble in these three-dimensional granular systems and establish a granular version of thermodynamic zeroth law. Within Edwards framework, we also explicitly clarify how friction influences granular statistical mechanics as modifying the density of states, which allows us to determine the entropy as a function of packing fraction and friction subsequently. Additionally, we obtain a granular jamming phas…
We present a systematic investigation of the distribution of normal forces at the boundaries of static packings of spheres. A new method for the efficient construction of large hexagonal-close-packed crystals is introduced and used to study the effect of spatial ordering on the distribution of forces. Under uniaxial compression we find that the form for the probability distribution of normal forces between particles does not depend strongly on crystallinity or inter-particle friction. In all cases the distribution decays exponentially at large forces and shows a plateau or possibly a small pea…
Granular material exposed to shear shows a variety of unique phenomena: Reynolds dilatancy, positional order and orientational order effects may compete in the shear zone. We study granular packings consisting of macroscopic prolate, oblate and spherical grains and compare their behaviour. X-ray tomography is used to determine the particle positions and orientations in a cylindrical split bottom shear cell. Packing densities and the arrangements of individual particles in the shear zone are evaluated. For anisometric particles, we observe the competition of two opposite effects. One the one ha…
We present experimental measurements of penetration depths for the impact of spheres into wetted granular media. We observe that the penetration depth in the liquid saturated case scales with projectile density, size, and drop height in a fashion consistent with the scaling observed in the dry case, but that penetration depths into saturated packings tend to be smaller. This result suggests that, for the range of impact energies observed, the stopping force is set by static contact forces between grains within the bed, and that the presence of liquid serves, primarily, to enhance these contact…
We developed a novel experimental technique to generate mechanically stable (MS) packings of frictionless granular disks. We performed a series of coordinated experiments and numerical simulations to enumerate the MS packings in small 2D systems composed of bidisperse disks. We find that frictionless MS packings occur as discrete, well-separated points in configuration space and obtain excellent quantitative agreement between MS packings generated in experiments and simulations. In addition, we observe that MS packing probabilities can vary by many orders of magnitude and are robust with respe…
We present a multiscale simulation algorithm for amorphous materials, which we illustrate and validate in a canonical case of dense granular flow. Our algorithm is based on the recently proposed Spot Model, where particles in a dense random packing undergo chain-like collective displacements in response to diffusing "spots" of influence, carrying a slight excess of interstitial free volume. We reconstruct the microscopic dynamics of particles from the "coarse grained" dynamics of spots by introducing a localized particle relaxation step after each spot-induced block displacement, simply to enf…
We suggest a simple model for the dynamics of granular particles in suspension which is suitable for an event driven algorithm, allowing to simulate $N=\mathcal{O}(10^6)$ particles or more. As a first application we consider a dense granular packing which is fluidized by an upward stream of liquid, i.e. a fluidized bed. In the stationary state, when all forces balance, we always observe a well defined interface whose width is approximately independent of packing fraction. We also study the dynamics of expansion and sedimentation after a sudden change in flow rate giving rise to a change in sta…
We experimentally measure the static stress at the bottom of a granular chains column with a precise and reproducible method. The relation, between the filling mass and the apparent mass converted from the bottom stress, is investigated on various chain lengths. Our measurements reconfirm that the scaling behavior of the stress saturation curves is in accord with the theoretical expectation of the Janssen model. Additionally, the saturation mass is displayed as a nonmonotonic function of the chain length, where a distinguishing transition of the saturation mass is found at the persistence leng…
The notion of random close packings of a bulk static collection of ball bearings or sand grains was introduced in the 1960's by G.D. Scott and J.D. Bernal. There have been numerous attempts to understand the packings. We give a short argument, based on recent experiments and simulations, which explains the packings in purely geometric terms.
Confined thin structures are ubiquitous in nature. Spatial and length constraints have led to a number of novel packing strategies at both the micro-scale, as when DNA packages inside a capsid, and the macro-scale, seen in plant root development and the arrangement of the human intestinal tract. By varying the arc length of an elastic loop injected into an array of monodisperse, soft, spherical grains at varying initial number density, we investigate the resulting packing behaviors between a growing slender structure constrained by deformable boundaries. At low initial packing fractions, the e…
We investigate the Green function of two-dimensional dense random packings of grains in order to discriminate between the different theories of stress transmission in granular materials. Our computer simulations allow for a detailed quantitative investigation of the dynamics which is difficult to obtain experimentally. We show that both hyperbolic and parabolic models of stress transmission fail to predict the correct stress distribution in the studied region of the parameters space. We demonstrate that the compressional and shear components of the stress compare very well with the predictions…
Experiments on isotropic compression of a granular assembly of spheres show that the shear and bulk moduli vary with the confining pressure faster than the 1/3 power law predicted by Hertz-Mindlin effective medium theories (EMT) of contact elasticity. Moreover, the ratio between the moduli is found to be larger than the prediction of the elastic theory by a constant value. The understanding of these discrepancies has been a longstanding question in the field of granular matter. Here we perform a test of the applicability of elasticity theory to granular materials. We perform sound propagation …
The effects of movement of the side walls of a confined granular packing are studied by discrete element, molecular dynamics simulations. The dynamical evolution of the stress is studied as a function of wall movement both in the direction of gravity as well as opposite to it. For all wall velocities explored, the stress in the final state of the system after wall movement is fundamentally different from the original state obtained by pouring particles into the container and letting them settle under the influence of gravity. The original packing possesses a hydrostatic-like region at the top …
We investigate the unjamming response of disordered packings of frictional hard disks with the help of computer simulations. First, we generate jammed configurations of the disks and then force them to move again by local perturbations. We study the spatial distribution of the stress and displacement response and find long range effects of the perturbation in both cases. We record the penetration depth of the displacements and the critical force that is needed to make the system yield. These quantities are tested in two types of systems: in ideal homogeneous packings in zero gravity and in pac…
The structure and stresses of static granular packs in cylindrical containers are studied using large-scale discrete element molecular dynamics simulations in three dimensions. We generate packings by both pouring and sedimentation and examine how the final state depends on the method of construction. The vertical stress becomes depth-independent for deep piles and we compare these stress depth-profiles to the classical Janssen theory. The majority of the tangential forces for particle-wall contacts are found to be close to the Coulomb failure criterion, in agreement with the theory of Janssen…
We study the mechanical response generated by local deformations in jammed packings of rigid disks. Based on discrete element simulations we determine the critical force of the local perturbation that is needed to break the mechanical equilibrium and examine the generated displacement field. Displacements decay as a power law of the distance from the perturbation point. The decay exponent and the critical force exhibit nontrivial dependence on the friction: Both quantities are nonmonotonic and have a sharp maximum at the friction coefficient 0.1. We find that the mechanical response properties…
