We present numerical evidence for an additional discontinuous transition inside the jammed regime for an asymmetric bidisperse granular packing upon compression. This additional transition line separates jammed states with networks of predominantly large particles from jammed networks formed by both large and small particles, and the transition is indicated by a discontinuity in the number of particles contributing to the jammed network. The additional transition line emerges from the curves of jamming transitions and terminates in an end-point where the discontinuity vanishes. The additional line is starting at a size ratio around $δ= 0.22$ and grows longer for smaller $δ$. For $δ\to 0$, the additional transition line approaches a limit that can be derived analytically. The observed jamming scenarios are reminiscent of glass-glass transitions found in colloidal glasses.
We study packings of bidispersed spherical particles on a spherical surface. The presence of curvature necessitates defects even for monodispersed particles; bidispersity either leads to a more disordered packing for nearly equal radii, or a higher fill fraction when the smaller particles are accomodated in the interstices of the larger spheres. Variation in the packing fraction is explained by a percolation transition, as chains of defects or scars previously discovered in the monodispersed case grow and eventually disconnect the neighbor graph.
Motivated by a problem arising from pharmaceutical science [B. Baeumer et al., Discr. Contin. Dyn. Sys. B 12], we study random walks on the contact graph of a bidisperse random sphere packing. For a random walk on the unweighted graph that terminates in a specified target set, we compare the number of steps and the total euclidean length of the walk. We find a linear relationship between the two metrics with a proportionality constant that can be calculated from the edge length probabilities of the contact graph.
A new tetrahedral structure model was developed and the geometrical structure of jammed disordered packings of monodisperse spheres with different friction coefficients was systematically characterized. An intrinsic structure feature is revealed for all jammed disordered packings, which is determined only by the packing fraction, independent of interparticle friction. Moreover, the structural configurations associated with crystal phases are more prevalent than the geometric frustrated ones. In addition, irregular simplexes are found to play a key role in an increase in density, rather than re…
At low volume fraction, disordered arrangements of frictionless spheres are found in un--jammed states unable to support applied stresses, while at high volume fraction they are found in jammed states with mechanical strength. Here we show, focusing on the hard sphere zero pressure limit, that the transition between un-jammed and jammed states does not occur at a single value of the volume fraction, but in a whole volume fraction range. This result is obtained via the direct numerical construction of disordered jammed states with a volume fraction varying between two limits, $0.636$ and $0.646…
We identify the maximally dense lattice packings of tangent-disk trimers with fixed bond angles ($θ= θ_0$) and contrast them to both their nonmaximally-dense-but-strictly-jammed lattice packings as well as the disordered jammed states they form for a range of compression protocols. While only $θ_0 = 0,\ 60^\circ,\ \rm{and}\ 120^\circ$ trimers can form the triangular lattice, maximally-dense maximally-symmetric packings for all $θ_0$ fall into just two categories distinguished by their bond topologies: half-elongated-triangular for $0 < θ_0 < 60^\circ$ and elongated-snub-square for $60^\circ < …
We model the packing structure of a marginally jammed bulk ensemble of polydisperse spheres using an extended granocentric mode explicitly taking into account rattlers. This leads to a relation- ship between the characteristic parameters of the packing, such as the mean number of neighbors and the fraction of rattlers, and the radial distribution function g(r). We find excellent agreement between the model predictions for g(r) and packing simulations as well as experiments on jammed emulsion droplets. The observed quantitative agreement opens the path towards a full structural characterization…
Maximally random jammed (MRJ) particle packings can be viewed as prototypical glasses in that they are maximally disordered while simultaneously being mechanically rigid. The prediction of the MRJ packing density phi, among other packing properties of frictionless particles, still poses many theoretical challenges, even for congruent spheres or disks. Using the geometric-structure approach, we derive for the first time a highly accurate formula for MRJ densities for a very wide class of twodimensional frictionless packings, namely, binary convex superdisks, with shapes that continuously interp…
We calculate the free volume distributions of nearly jammed packings of monodisperse and bidisperse hard sphere configurations. These distributions differ qualitatively from those of the fluid, displaying a power law tail at large free volumes, which constitutes a distinct signature of nearly jammed configurations, persisting for moderate degrees of decompression. We reproduce and explain the observed distribution by considering the pair correlation function within the first coordination shell for jammed hard sphere configurations. We analyze features of the equation of state near jamming, and…
Jammed matter is by definition impenetrable to light, rendering the characterization of the 3D geometry difficult. Confocal microscopy of a dyed, refractive index matched emulsion nevertheless allows one to image the jammed system. Here we explain the origin of the mechanism of enhanced fluorescence at the contacts of jammed emulsion droplets in terms of a blue-shifted fluorescence emission band due to the change in the polarity of the interfacial environment. We then use this information to determine the contact network in the emulsion, which models a frictionless jammed system. This enables …
A spatial distribution is hyperuniform if it has local density fluctuations that vanish in the limit of long length scales. Hyperuniformity is a well known property of both crystals and quasicrystals. Of recent interest, however, is disordered hyperuniformity: the presence of hyperuniform scaling without long-range configurational order. Jammed granular packings have been proposed as an example of disordered hyperuniformity, but recent numerical investigation has revealed that many jammed systems instead exhibit a complex set of distinct behaviors at long, emergent length scales. We use the Vo…
Understanding the structural properties of random packings of jammed colloids requires an unprecedented high-resolution determination of the contact network providing mechanical stability to the packing. Here, we address the determination of the contact network by a novel strategy based on fluorophore signal exclusion of quantum dot nanoparticles from the contact points. We use fluorescence labeling schemes on particles inspired by biology and biointerface science in conjunction with fluorophore exclusion at the contact region. The method provides high-resolution contact network data that allo…
We consider the contribution to the density of vibrational states and the distribution of energy barrier heights of incipient instabilities in a glass modeled by a jammed packing of spheres. On approaching an instability, the frequency of a normal mode and the height of the energy barrier to cross into a new ground state both vanish. These instabilities produce a contribution to the density of vibrational states that scales as $ω^3$ at low frequencies $ω$, but which vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. In addition, they affect an anharmonic property, the distribution of energy barriers $ΔH$, g…
We show that in slowly generated 2d packings of frictional spheres, a significant fraction of the friction forces lies at the Coulomb threshold - for small pressure p and friction coefficient mu, about half of the contacts. Interpreting these contacts as constrained leads to a generalized concept of isostaticity, which relates the maximal fraction of fully mobilized contacts and contact number. For p->0, our frictional packings approximately satisfy this relation over the full range of mu. This is in agreement with a previous conjecture that gently built packings should be marginal solids at j…
We calculate the normal modes of vibration in jammed sphere packings to obtain the energy diffusivity, a spectral measure of transport. At the boson peak frequency, we find an Ioffe-Regel crossover from a diffusivity that drops rapidly with frequency to one that is nearly frequency-independent. This crossover frequency shifts to zero as the system is decompressed towards the jamming transition, providing unambiguous evidence of a regime in frequency of nearly constant diffusivity. Such a regime, postulated to exist in glasses to explain the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity, t…
Packings of frictionless athermal particles that interact only when they overlap experience a jamming transition as a function of packing density. Such packings provide the foundation for the theory of jamming. This theory rests on the observation that, despite the multitude of disordered configurations, the mechanical response to linear order depends only on the distance to the transition. We investigate the validity and utility of such measurements that invoke the harmonic approximation and show that, despite particles coming in and out of contact, there is a well-defined linear regime in th…
We compare the structural and mechanical properties of mechanically stable (MS) packings of frictional disks in two spatial dimensions (2D) generated with isotropic compression and simple shear protocols from discrete element modeling (DEM) simulations. We find that the average contact number and packing fraction at jamming onset are similar (with relative deviations $< 0.5\%$) for MS packings generated via compression and shear. In contrast, the average stress anisotropy $\langle {\hat Σ}_{xy} \rangle = 0$ for MS packings generated via isotropic compression, whereas $\langle {\hat Σ}_{xy} \ra…
We identify putatively maximally dense packings of tangent-sphere trimers with fixed bond angles ($θ= θ_0$) using a novel method, and contrast them to the disordered jammed states they form under quasistatic and dynamic athermal compression. Incommensurability of $θ_0$ with 3D close-packing does not by itself inhibit formation of dense 3D crystals; all $θ_0$ allow formation of crystals with $ϕ_{max}(θ_0) > 0.97ϕ_{cp}$. Trimers are always able to arrange into periodic structures composed of close-packed bilayers or trilayers of triangular-lattice planes, separated by ``gap layers'' that accomod…
Dynamics of jammed packings of soft athermal disks under finite-rate shear are studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Particularly, we investigate the spatial structures of stress drop events, which are expected to provide information about plasticity. Investigating the displacement fields during stress drop events, we show that there are qualitatively different two types of events in the low rate limit: localized ones and extended ones. We further investigate the time evolution of events and clarify that both types of events are due to oscillatory motion of the stress, which is u…
In jammed packings, it is usually thought that local structure only plays a significant role in specific regimes. The standard deviation of the relative excess coordination, $σ_Z/ Z_\mathrm{c}$, decays like $1/\sqrt{d}$, so that local structure should play no role in high spatial dimensions. Furthermore, in any fixed dimension $d \geq 2$, there are diverging length scales as the pressure vanishes approaching the unjamming transition, again suggesting that local structure should not be sufficient to describe response. Here we challenge the assumption that local structure does not matter in thes…
Hyperuniformity characterizes a state of matter for which density fluctuations diminish towards zero at the largest length scales. However, the task of determining whether or not an experimental system is hyperuniform is experimentally challenging due to finite-resolution, noise and sample-size effects that influence characterization measurements. Here we explore these issues, employing video optical microscopy to study hyperuniformity phenomena in disordered two-dimensional jammed packings of soft spheres. Using a combination of experiment and simulation we characterize the detrimental effect…
When are athermal soft sphere packings jammed ? Any experimentally relevant definition must at the very least require a jammed packing to resist shear. We demonstrate that widely used (numerical) protocols in which particles are compressed together, can and do produce packings which are unstable to shear - and that the probability of generating such packings reaches one near jamming. We introduce a new protocol that, by allowing the system to explore different box shapes as it equilibrates, generates truly jammed packings with strictly positive shear moduli G. For these packings, the scaling o…
The local structure of disordered jammed packings of monodisperse spheres without friction, generated by the Lubachevsky-Stillinger algorithm, is studied for packing fractions above and below 64%. The structural similarity of the particle environments to fcc or hcp crystalline packings (local crystallinity) is quantified by order metrics based on rank-four Minkowski tensors. We find a critical packing fraction ϕ_c \approx 0.649, distinctly higher than previously reported values for the contested random close packing limit. At ϕ_c, the probability of finding local crystalline configurations fir…
We carry out numerical studies of static packings of frictionless superellipsoidal particles in three spatial dimensions. We consider more than $200$ different particle shapes by varying the three shape parameters that define superellipsoids. We characterize the structural and mechanical properties of both disordered and ordered packings using two packing-generation protocols. We perform athermal quasi-static compression simulations starting from either random, dilute configurations (Protocol 1) or thermalized, dense configurations (protocol $2$), which allows us to tune the orientational orde…
We show for the first time that collectively jammed disordered packings of three-dimensional monodisperse frictionless hard spheres can be produced and tuned using a novel numerical protocol with packing density $ϕ$ as low as 0.6. This is well below the value of 0.64 associated with the maximally random jammed state and entirely unrelated to the ill-defined ``random loose packing'' state density. Specifically, collectively jammed packings are generated with a very narrow distribution centered at any density $ϕ$ over a wide density range $ϕ\in [0.6,~0.74048\ldots]$ with variable disorder. Our r…
Contact breaking and Hertzian interactions between grains can both give rise to nonlinear vibrational response of static granular packings. We perform molecular dynamics simulations at constant energy in 2D of frictionless bidisperse disks that interact via Hertzian spring potentials as a function of energy and measure directly the vibrational response from the Fourier transform of the velocity autocorrelation function. We compare the measured vibrational response of static packings near jamming onset to that obtained from the eigenvalues of the dynamical matrix to determine the temperature ab…
Memory encoding by cyclic shear is a reliable process to store information in jammed solids, yet its underlying mechanism and its connection to the amorphous structure are not fully understood. When a jammed sphere packing is repeatedly sheared with cycles of the same strain amplitude, it optimizes its mechanical response to the cyclic driving and stores a memory of it. We study memory by cyclic shear training as a function of the underlying stability of the amorphous structure in marginally stable and highly stable packings, the latter produced by minimizing the potential energy using both po…
The mechanical response of packings of purely repulsive, spherical particles to athermal, quasistatic simple shear near jamming onset is highly nonlinear. Previous studies have shown that, at small pressure $p$, the ensemble-averaged static shear modulus $\langle G-G_0 \rangle$ scales with $p^α$, where $α\approx 1$, but above a characteristic pressure $p^{**}$, $\langle G-G_0 \rangle \sim p^β$, where $β\approx 0.5$. However, we find that the shear modulus $G^i$ for an individual packing typically decreases linearly with $p$ along a geometrical family where the contact network does not change. …
At densities higher than the jamming transition for athermal, frictionless repulsive spheres we find two distinct length scales, both of which diverge as a power law as the transition is approached. The first, $ξ_{Z}$, is associated with the two-point correlation function for the number of contacts on two particles as a function of the particle separation. The second, $ξ_{f}$, is associated with contact-number fluctuations in subsystems of different sizes. On scales below $ξ_{f}$ the fluctuations are highly suppressed, similar to the phenomenon of hyperuniformity usually associated with densit…
We perform computational studies of repulsive, frictionless disks to investigate the development of stress anisotropy in mechanically stable (MS) packings. We focus on two protocols for generating MS packings: 1) isotropic compression and 2) applied simple or pure shear strain $γ$ at fixed packing fraction $ϕ$. MS packings of frictionless disks occur as geometric families (i.e. parabolic segments with positive curvature) in the $ϕ$-$γ$ plane. MS packings from protocol 1 populate parabolic segments with both signs of the slope, $dϕ/dγ>0$ and $dϕ/dγ<0$. In contrast, MS packings from protocol 2 p…
We investigate the nature of randomness in disordered packings of frictional spheres. We calculate the entropy of 3D packings through the force and volume ensemble of jammed matter, a mesoscopic ensemble and numerical simulations using volume fluctuation analysis and graph theoretical methods. Equations of state are obtained relating entropy, volume fraction and compactivity characterizing the different states of jammed matter. At the mesoscopic level the entropy vanishes at random close packing. The entropy of the jammed system reveals that the random loose packings are more disordered than r…
Dense, disordered packings of particles are useful models of low-temperature amorphous phases of matter, biological systems, granular media, and colloidal systems. The study of dense packings of nonspherical particles enables one to ascertain how rotational degrees of freedom affect packing behavior. Here, we study superballs, a large family of deformations of the sphere, defined in three dimensions by $|x_1|^{2p}+|x_2|^{2p}+|x_3|^{2p}\leq1$, where $p>0$ is a deformation parameter indicating to what extent the shape deviates from a sphere. As $p$ increases from the sphere point ($p=1$), the su…
We propose a theoretical framework for predicting the protocol dependence of the jamming transition for frictionless spherical particles that interact via purely repulsive contact forces. We study isostatic jammed disk packings obtained via two protocols: isotropic compression and simple shear. We show that for frictionless systems, all jammed packings can be obtained via either protocol. However, the probability to obtain a particular jammed packing depends on the packing-generation protocol. We predict the average shear strain required to induce jamming in initially unjammed packings from th…
We perform computational studies of static packings of a variety of nonspherical particles including circulo-lines, circulo-polygons, ellipses, asymmetric dimers, and dumbbells to determine which shapes form hypostatic versus isostatic packings and to understand why hypostatic packings of nonspherical particles can be mechanically stable despite having fewer contacts than that predicted from naïve constraint counting. To generate highly accurate force- and torque-balanced packings of circulo-lines and -polygons, we developed an interparticle potential that gives continuous forces and torques a…
By minimizing the enthalpy of packings of frictionless particles, we obtain jammed solids at desired pressures and hence investigate the jamming transition with and without shear. Typical scaling relations of the jamming transition are recovered in both cases. In contrast to systems without shear, shear-driven jamming transition occurs at a higher packing fraction and the jammed solids are more rigid with an anisotropic force network. Furthermore, by introducing the macro-friction coefficient, we propose an explanation of the packing fraction gap between sheared and non-sheared systems at fixe…
By minimizing a thermodynamic-like potential, we unbiasedly sample the potential energy landscape of soft and frictionless spheres under constant shear stress. We obtain zero-temperature jammed states under desired shear stresses and investigate their mechanical properties as a function of the shear stress. As a comparison, we also obtain jammed states from the quasistatic-shear sampling in which the shear stress is not well-controlled. Although the yield stresses determined by both samplings show the same power-law scaling with the compression from point $J$, i.e.~the jamming transition point…
We compare the elastic response of spring networks whose contact geometry is derived from real packings of frictionless discs, to networks obtained by randomly cutting bonds in a highly connected network derived from a well-compressed packing. We find that the shear response of packing-derived networks, and both the shear and compression response of randomly cut networks, are all similar: the elastic moduli vanish linearly near jamming, and distributions characterizing the local geometry of the response scale with distance to jamming. Compression of packing-derived networks is exceptional: the…
We prepare packings of frictional tetrahedra with volume fractions ϕ ranging from 0.469 to 0.622 using three different experimental protocols under isobaric conditions. Analysis via X-ray micro-tomography reveals that the contact number Z grows with ϕ, but does depend on the preparation protocol. While there exist four different types of contacts in tetrahedra packings, our analysis shows that the edge-to-face contacts contribute about 50% of the total increase in Z. The number of constraints per particle C increases also with ϕ and even the loosest packings are strongly hyperstatic i.e. mecha…
Using confocal microscopy we investigate the effect of attraction on the packing of polydisperse emulsions under gravity. We find that the distributions of neighbors, coordination number, and local packing fraction as a function of attraction are captured by recently proposed geometrical modeling and statistical mechanics approaches to granular matter. This extends the range of applicability of these tools to polydisperse, attractive jammed packings. Furthermore, the dependence of packing density and average coordination number on the strength of attraction provides the first experimental test…
Disordered jammed packings under confinement have received considerably less attention than their \textit{bulk} counterparts and yet arise in a variety of practical situations. In this work, we study binary sphere packings that are confined between two parallel hard planes, and generalize the Torquato-Jiao (TJ) sequential linear programming algorithm [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 82}, 061302 (2010)] to obtain putative maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings that are exactly isostatic with high fidelity over a large range of plane separation distances $H$, small to large sphere radius ratio $α$ and small s…
We numerically investigate the mechanical and geometrical properties of dense wet granular particles with irreversible attractive interaction. The shear modulus exhibits two inflection points as the packing fraction increases, and the bulk modulus shows a non-monotonic behavior. The coordination number also exhibits two inflection points. The peak position in the pair correlation function shifts to a lower value due to attractive interaction. The Voronoi tessellation of the particle configuration reveals that the probability density function for the volume of the Voronoi cell broadens as the p…
Soft, amorphous solids such as tissues, foams, and emulsions are composed of deformable particles. However, the effect of single-particle deformability on the collective behavior of soft solids is still poorly understood. We perform numerical simulations of two-dimensional jammed packings of explicitly deformable particles to study the mechanical response of model soft solids. We find that jammed packings of deformable particles with excess shape degrees of freedom possess low-frequency quartic vibrational modes that stabilize the packings even though they possess fewer interparticle contacts …
We investigate the mechanical response of jammed packings of circulo-lines, interacting via purely repulsive, linear spring forces, as a function of pressure $P$ during athermal, quasistatic isotropic compression. Prior work has shown that the ensemble-averaged shear modulus for jammed disk packings scales as a power-law, $\langle G(P) \rangle \sim P^β$, with $β\sim 0.5$, over a wide range of pressure. For packings of circulo-lines, we also find robust power-law scaling of $\langle G(P)\rangle$ over the same range of pressure for aspect ratios ${\cal R} \gtrsim 1.2$. However, the power-law sca…
No known analytic framework precisely explains all the phenomena observed in jamming. The replica theory for glass and jamming is a mean field theory which attempts to do so by working in the limit of infinite dimensions, such that correlations between neighbors are negligible. As such, results from this mean field theory are not guaranteed to be observed in finite dimensions. However, many results in mean field for jamming have been shown to be exact or nearly exact in low dimensions. This suggests that the infinite dimensional limit is not necessary to obtain these results. In this paper, we…
We study jammed configurations of hard spheres as a function of compression speed using an event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm. We find that during the compression, the pressure follows closely the metastable liquid branch until the system gets arrested into a glass state as the relaxation time exceeds the compression speed. Further compression yields a jammed configuration that can be regarded as the infinite pressure configuration of that glass state. Consequently, we find that the density of jammed packings varies from 0.638 to 0.658 for polydisperse hard spheres and from 0.635 to 0.6…
We study both experimentally and theoretically the rheological behavior of isotropic bidisperse suspensions of noncolloidal particles in yield stress fluids. We focus on materials in which noncolloidal particles interact with the suspending fluid only through hydrodynamical interactions. We observe that both the elastic modulus and yield stress of bidisperse suspensions are lower than those of monodisperse suspensions of same solid volume fraction. Moreover, we show that the dimensionless yield stress of such suspensions is linked to their dimensionless elastic modulus and to their solid volum…
