We take advantage of the capability of the OTELO survey to obtain the H$α$ luminosity function (LF) at ${\rm z}\sim0.40$. Because of the deepest coverage of OTELO, we are able to determine the faint end of the LF, and thus better constrain the star formation rate and the number of galaxies at low luminosities. The AGN contribution to this LF is estimated as well. We make use of the multi-wavelength catalogue of objects in the field compiled by the OTELO survey, which is unique in terms of minimum flux and equivalent width. We also take advantage of the pseudo-spectra built for each source, which allow the identification of emission lines and the discrimination of different types of objects. The H$α$ luminosity function at $z\sim0.40$ is obtained, which extends the current faint end by almost 1 dex, reaching minimal luminosities of $\log_{10}L_{\rm lim}=38.5$ erg s$^{-1}$ (or $\sim0.002\, \text{M}_\odot\text{ yr}^{-1})$. The AGN contribution to the total H$α$ luminosity is estimated. We find that no AGN should be expected below a luminosity of $\log_{10}L=38.6$ erg s$^{-1}$. From the sample of non-AGN (presumably, pure SFG) at $z\sim0.40$ we estimated a star formation rate density of $ρ_{\rm SFR}=0.012\pm0.005\ {\rm \text{M}_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}\ Mpc^{-3}}$.
In this paper, we aim to study the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the [OII] emitters detected in the OTELO survey in order to characterise the star formation processes in low-mass galaxies at $z\sim1.43$ and to constrain the faint-end of the LF. Here, we describe the selection method and analysis of the emitters obtained from narrow-band scanning techniques. In addition, we present several relevant properties of the emitters and discuss the selection biases and uncertainties in the determination of the LF and the star formation rate density (SFRD). We confirmed a total of 60 s…
We take advantage of the capabilities of the OTELO survey to select and study the AGN population in the field. We performed an analysis of the properties of these objects, including their demography, morphology, and IR luminosity. Focusing on the population of H$α$ emitters at $z \sim 0.4$, we also aim to study the environments of AGN and non-AGN galaxies at that redshift. We make use of the multiwavelength catalog of objects in the field compiled by the OTELO survey, unique in terms of minimum line flux and equivalent width. The OTELO pseudo-spectra allow the identification of emission lines …
We study a sample of H$β$ emission line sources at $z\sim$0.9 to identify the star-forming (SF) galaxies sample and characterise them in terms of line luminosity, stellar mass, SFR, and morphology. The final aim is to obtain the H$β$ luminosity function (LF) of the SF galaxies at this redshift. We used the instrument OSIRIS at GTC to obtain the pseudo spectra of emission line sources in the OTELO field. From these pseudo spectra, we identified the objects with H$β$ emission. As the resolution of the pseudo spectra allowed us to separate H$β$ from O[III], we derive the H$β$ flux without contami…
The evolution of galaxies through cosmic time is studied observationally by means of extragalactic surveys. The OTELO survey aims to provide the deepest narrow-band survey to date in terms of minimum detectable flux and emission line equivalent width in order to detect the faintest extragalactic emission line systems. In this way, OTELO data will complements other broad-band, narrow-band, and spectroscopic surveys. The red tunable filter of the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) is used to scan a spectral window centred at $9175 Å$, which is free from strong sky emi…
The OTELO survey is a very deep, blind exploration of a selected region of the Extended Groth Strip and is designed for finding emission-line sources (ELSs). The survey design, observations, data reduction, astrometry, and photometry, as well as the correlation with ancillary data used to obtain a final catalogue, including photo-z estimates and a preliminary selection of ELS, were described in a previous contribution. Here, we aim to determine the main properties and luminosity function (LF) of the [O III] ELS sample of OTELO as a scientific demonstration of its capabilities, advantages, and …

Aims. We aim to study the 250 micron luminosity function (LF) down to much fainter luminosities than achieved by previous efforts. Methods. We developed a modified stacking method to reconstruct the 250 micron LF using optically selected galaxies from the SDSS survey and Herschel maps of the GAMA equatorial fields and Stripe 82. Our stacking method not only recovers the mean 250 micron luminosities of galaxies that are too faint to be individually detected, but also their underlying distribution functions. Results. We find very good agreement with previous measurements in the overlapping lumin…
We characterize the luminosity functions of galaxies residing in $z\sim0$ groups and clusters over the broadest ranges of luminosity and mass reachable by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our measurements cover four orders of magnitude in luminosity, down to about $M_r=-12$ mag or $L=10^7\,L_\odot$, and three orders of magnitude in halo mass, from $10^{12}$ to $10^{15} \, {\rm M}_\odot$. We find a characteristic scale, $M_r\sim-18$ mag or $L\sim10^9\, L_\odot$, below which the slope of the luminosity function becomes systematically steeper. This trend is present for all halo masses and originates…
Local extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are of particular astrophysical interest since they allow us to look into physical processes characteristic of the early Universe, from the assembly of galaxy disks to the formation of stars in conditions of low metallicity. Given the luminosity-metallicity relationship, all galaxies fainter than Mr < -13 are expected to be XMPs. Therefore, XMPs should be common in galaxy surveys. However, they are not, because several observational biases hamper their detection. This work compares the number of faint XMPs in the SDSS-DR7 spectroscopic survey with the …
We present a new, robust measurement of the evolving rest-frame UV galaxy luminosity function (LF) over the key redshift range z = 2 - 4. Our results are based on the high dynamic range provided by combining the HUDF, CANDELS/GOODS-South, and UltraVISTA/COSMOS surveys. We utilise the unparalleled multi-frequency photometry available in this survey `wedding cake' to compile complete galaxy samples at z ~ 2,3,4 via photometric redshifts (calibrated against the latest spectroscopy) rather than colour-colour selection, and to determine accurate rest-frame UV absolute magnitudes from SED fitting. O…
We present the quasar luminosity function at $z \sim 5$ derived from the optical wide-field survey data obtained as a part of the Subaru strategic program (SSP) with Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). From $\sim$81.8 deg$^2$ area in the Wide layer of the HSC-SSP survey, we selected 224 candidates of low-luminosity quasars at $z \sim 5$ by adopting the Lyman-break method down to $i = 24.1$ mag. Based on our candidates and spectroscopically-confirmed quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we derived the quasar luminosity function at $z \sim 5$ covering a wide luminosity range of $-28.76 < M_{\r…
Studies measuring the star formation rate density, luminosity function, and properties of star-forming galaxies are numerous. However, it exists a gap at $0.5<z<0.8$ in H$α$-based studies. Our main goal is to study the properties of a sample of faint H$α$ emitters at $z\sim0.62$. We focus on their contribution to the faint end of the luminosity function and derived star formation rate density, characterising their morphologies and basic photometric and spectroscopic properties. We use a narrow-band technique in the near-infrared, with a filter centred at 1.06 $μ$m. The data come from ultra-dee…
We study the intrinsic shapes of a sample of over 400 quiescent galaxies in the cores of the Virgo and Fornax clusters with luminosities $10^{6} \leq L_{g}/L_{\odot} \leq 10^{8}$. Similar to satellites of the Local Group and Centaurus A, these faint, low surface brightness cluster galaxies are best described as a family of thick ($C/A > 0.5$), oblate-triaxial spheroids. However, the large sample size allows us to show that the flattening of their stellar distributions depends both on luminosity and on the presence of a nuclear star cluster. Nucleated satellites are thicker at all luminosities …
Recent deep surveys have unravelled a population of faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the high redshift Universe, leading to various discussions on their nature and their role during the Epoch of Reionization. We use cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of a bright galaxy at z = 6 ($M_\star \gtrsim 10^{10} M_\odot$) hosting an actively growing super-massive black hole to study the properties of these objects. In particular, we study how the black hole and the galaxy co-evolve and what is the relative contribution of the AGN and of the stellar populations to the luminosity budge…
We use deep high resolution \textit{HST/ACS} imaging of two fields in the core of the Coma cluster to investigate the occurrence of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) in quiescent dwarf galaxies as faint as $M_{I} = -10$ mag. We employ a hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression framework to model the faint end of the nucleation fraction ($f_{n}$) as a function of both galaxy luminosity and environment. We find that $f_n$ is remarkably high in Coma: at $M_{I} \approx -13$ mag half of the cluster dwarfs still host prominent NSCs. Comparison with dwarf systems in nearby clusters and groups shows that,…
We have obtained deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging of four faint and ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidates in the vicinity of M101 - Dw21, Dw22, Dw23 and Dw35, originally discovered by Bennet et al. (2017). Previous distance estimates using the surface brightness fluctuation technique have suggested that these four dwarf candidates are the only remaining viable M101 satellites identified in ground based imaging out to the virial radius of M101 (D~250 kpc). Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging of all four dwarf candidates shows no associated resolved stellar populations, indicating that th…
The sensitivity of X-ray facilities and our ability to detect fainter active galactic nuclei (AGNs) will increase with the upcoming Athena mission and the AXIS and Lynx concept missions, thus improving our understanding of supermassive black holes (BHs) in a luminosity regime that can be dominated by X-ray binaries. We analyze the population of faint AGN (L_x (2-10 keV) < 10^42 erg/s) in the Illustris, TNG100, EAGLE, and SIMBA cosmological simulations, and find that the properties of their host galaxies vary from one simulation to another. In Illustris and EAGLE, faint AGN are powered by low-m…
In nature we observe galaxy aggregations that span a wide range of magnitude gaps between the two first-ranked galaxies of a system ($Δm_{12}$). There are systems with gaps close to zero (e.g., the Coma cluster), and at the other extreme of the distribution, the largest gaps are found among the so-called fossil systems. Fossil and non-fossil systems could have different galaxy populations that should be reflected in their luminosity functions. In this work we study, for the first time, the dependence of the luminosity function parameters on $Δm_{12}$ using data obtained by the fossil group ori…
[Abridged] We present a robust measurement of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF) and its evolution during the peak epoch of cosmic star formation at 1<z<3. We use our deep near ultraviolet imaging from WFC3/UVIS on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and existing ACS/WFC and WFC3/IR imaging of three lensing galaxy clusters, Abell 2744 and MACSJ0717 from the Hubble Frontier Field survey and Abell 1689. We use photometric redshifts to identify 780 ultra-faint galaxies with $M_{UV}$<-12.5 AB mag at 1<z<3. From these samples, we identified 5 new, faint, multiply imaged systems in A1689. We co…
We use the largest sample of z~6 galaxies to date from the first four Hubble Frontier Fields clusters to set constraints on the shape of the z~6 luminosity functions (LFs) to fainter than Muv=-14 mag. We quantify, for the first time, the impact of magnification uncertainties on LF results and thus provide more realistic constraints than other recent work. Our simulations reveal that for the highly-magnified sources the systematic uncertainties can become extremely large fainter than -14 mag, reaching several orders of magnitude at 95% confidence at ~-12 mag. Our new forward-modeling formalism …
We constrain the rest-frame FUV (1546Å), NUV (2345Å) and U-band (3690Å) luminosity functions (LFs) and luminosity densities (LDs) with unprecedented precision from $z\sim0.2$ to $z\sim3$ (FUV, NUV) and $z\sim2$ (U-band). Our sample of over 4.3 million galaxies, selected from the CFHT Large Area $U$-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and HyperSuprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) data lets us probe the very faint regime (down to $M_\mathrm{FUV},M_\mathrm{NUV},M_\mathrm{U} \simeq -15$ at low redshift) while simultaneously detecting very rare galaxies at the bright end down to comoving densities …
We present results on the rest-frame $H$-band luminosity functions (LF) of red sequence galaxies in seven clusters at 1.0 < z < 1.3 from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments Survey (GOGREEN). Using deep GMOS-z' and IRAC $3.6 μ$m imaging, we identify red sequence galaxies and measure their LFs down to $M_{H} \sim M_{H}^{*} + (2.0 - 3.0)$. By stacking the entire sample, we derive a shallow faint end slope of $ α\sim -0.35^{+0.15}_{-0.15} $ and $ M_{H}^{*} \sim -23.52^{+0.15}_{-0.17} $, suggesting that there is a deficit of faint red sequence galaxies in clusters at high…
We report the first direct and robust measurement of the faint-end slope of the Lyman-alpha emitter (LAE) luminosity function at z = 5.7. Candidate LAEs from a low-spectral-resolution blind search with IMACS on Magellan-Baade were targeted at higher resolution to distinguish high redshift LAEs from foreground galaxies. All but 2 of our 42 single-emission-line systems have flux F $< 2.0 \times 10^{-17}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, making these the faintest emission-lines observed for a z = 5.7 sample with known completeness, an essential property for determining the faint end slope of the LAE lumi…
We have determined K-band luminosity functions for 13,325 local Universe galaxies as a function of morphology and color (for K_tot <= 10.75). Our sample is drawn from the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog, with all sample galaxies having measured morphologies and distances (including 4,219 archival redshift-independent distances). The luminosity function for our total sample is in good agreement with previous works, but is relatively smooth at faint magnitudes (due to bulk flow distance corrections). We investigated the differences due to morphological and color-selection using 5,417 sample galaxi…
We present measurements of the size of the quasar proximity zone ($R_p$) for eleven low-luminosity ($-26.16\leq M_{1450}\leq-22.83$) quasars at $z\sim6$, discovered by the Subaru High-$z$ Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars project (SHELLQs). Our faint quasar sample expands the $R_p$ measurement down to $M_{1450}=-22.83$ mag, where more common quasar populations dominate at the epoch. We restrict the sample to quasars whose systemic redshifts have been precisely measured by [CII] 158 $μ$m or MgII $λ$2798 emission lines. We also update the $R_p$ measurements for 26 luminous quasars presented …

Exploiting the power of gravitational lensing, the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program aims at observing six massive galaxy clusters to explore the distant Universe far beyond the depth limits of blank field surveys. Using the complete Hubble Space Telescope observations of the first HFF cluster Abell 2744, we report the detection of 50 galaxy candidates at $z \sim 7$ and eight candidates at $z \sim 8$ in a total survey area of 0.96 arcmin$^{2}$ in the source plane. Three of these galaxies are multiply-imaged by the lensing cluster. Using an updated model of the mass distribution in the clust…
We report the result of a faint quasar survey in a one square degree field. The aim is to test the Y-K/g-z and J-K/i-Y color selection criteria for quasars at faint magnitude, to obtain a complete sample of quasars based on deep optical and near-infrared color-color selection, and to measure the faint end of quasar luminosity function (QLF) over a wide redshift range. We carried out a quasar survey based on the Y-K/g-z and J-K/i-Y quasar selection criteria, using the deep Y-band data obtained from our CFHT/WIRCam Y-band images in a two-degree field within the F22 field of the VIMOS VLT deep su…
We construct $z\sim6-7$, 8, and 9 faint Lyman break galaxy samples (334, 61, and 37 galaxies, respectively) with accurate size measurements with the software $\texttt{glafic}$ from the complete Hubble Frontier Fields (FF) cluster and parallel fields data. These are the largest samples hitherto and reach down to the faint ends of recently obtained deep luminosity functions. At faint magnitudes, however, these samples are highly incomplete for galaxies with large sizes, implying that derivation of the luminosity function (LF) sensitively depends on the intrinsic size--luminosity (RL) relation. The lowest luminosity (L < 10^5 L_sun) Milky Way satellite galaxies represent the extreme lower limit of the galaxy luminosity function. These ultra-faint dwarfs are the oldest, most dark matter-dominated, most metal-poor, and least chemically evolved stellar systems known. They therefore provide unique windows into the formation of the first galaxies and the behavior of dark matter on small scales. In this review, we summarize the discovery of ultra-faint dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in 2005, and the subsequent observational and theoretical progress in understanding their nature and…
We present Ly$α$ and ultraviolet-continuum (UV) luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at $z=2.0-3.5$ determined by the un-targetted optical spectroscopic survey of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). We combine deep Subaru imaging with HETDEX spectra resulting in $11.4$ deg$^2$ of fiber-spectra sky coverage, obtaining $18320$ galaxies spectroscopically identified with Ly$α$ emission, $2126$ of which host type 1 AGN showing broad (FWHM$~>1000$ km s$^{-1}$) Ly$α$ emission lines. We derive the Ly$α$ (UV) LF over 2 orders of magnitude cover…

Understanding the faint end of quasar luminosity function at a high redshift is important since the number density of faint quasars is a critical element in constraining ultraviolet (UV) photon budgets for ionizing the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the early universe. Here, we present quasar LF reaching $M_{1450} \sim -22.0$ AB mag at $z\sim5$, about one magnitude deeper than previous UV LFs. We select quasars at $z\sim5$ with a deep learning technique from deep data taken by the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP), covering a 15.5 deg$^2$ area. Beyond the traditional color se…
We report the discovery of an ultra-faint star cluster in the constellation of Centaurus. This new stellar system, Kim 3, features a half light radius of $r_{h}=2.29^{+1.28}_{-0.52}$ pc and a total luminosity of $M_{V}=+0.7\pm0.3$. Approximately 26 stars are identified as candidate member stars down to four magnitudes below the main-sequence turn-off, which makes Kim 3 the least luminous star cluster known to date. The compact physical size and extreme low luminosity place it close to faint star clusters in the size-luminosity plane. The stellar population of Kim 3 appears to be relatively you…
We present the discovery of one or two extremely faint z~6 quasars in 6.5 deg^2 utilizing a unique capability of the wide-field imaging of the Subaru/Suprime-Cam. The quasar selection was made in (i'-z_B) and (z_B-z_R) colors, where z_B and z_R are bandpasses with central wavelengths of 8842A and 9841A, respectively. The color selection can effectively isolate quasars at z~6 from M/L/T dwarfs without the J-band photometry down to z_R<24.0, which is 3.5 mag. deeper than SDSS. We have selected 17 promising quasar candidates. The follow-up spectroscopy for seven targets identified one apparent qu…
We present a catalogue of local ($z<0.1$) galaxies that contain faint AGN. We select these objects by identifying galaxies that exhibit a significant excess in their radio luminosities, compared to what is expected from the observed levels of star-formation activity in these systems. This is achieved by comparing the optical (spectroscopic) star formation rate (SFR) to the 1.4~GHz luminosity measured from the FIRST survey. The majority of the AGN identified in this study are fainter than those in previous work, such as in the Best and Heckman (2012) catalogue. We show that these faint AGN make…
We constrain the quasar contribution to cosmic reionization based on our deep optical survey of z~6 quasars down to z_R=24.15 using Subaru/Suprime-Cam in three UKIDSS-DXS fields covering 6.5 deg^2. In Kashikawa et al. (2015), we select 17 quasar candidates and report our initial discovery of two low-luminosity quasars (M_1450~ -23) from seven targets, one of which might be a Lyman alpha emitting galaxy. From an additional optical spectroscopy, none of the four candidates out of the remaining ten turn out to be genuine quasars. Moreover, the deeper optical photometry provided by the Hyper Supri…
We present a new technique to estimate the evolution of the very faint end of the UV luminosity function (LF) out to $z\sim5$. Measured star formation histories (SFHs) from the fossil record of Local Group galaxies are used to reconstruct the LF down to M$_{UV}\sim-5$ at $z\sim5$ and M$_{UV}\sim-1.5$ at $z<1$. Such faint limits are well beyond the current observational limits and are likely to remain beyond the limits of next generation facilities. The reconstructed LFs, when combined with direct measurements of the LFs at higher luminosity, are well-fit by a standard Schechter function with n…
We presents results from a spectroscopic survey of $z\sim5$ quasars in the CFHT Legacy Survey (CFHTLS). Using both optical color selection and a likelihood method we select 97 candidates over an area of 105 deg$^2$ to a limit of $i_{\rm AB} < 23.2$, and 7 candidates in the range $23.2 < i_{\rm AB} < 23.7$ over an area of 18.5 deg$^2$. Spectroscopic observations for 43 candidates were obtained with Gemini, MMT, and LBT, of which 37 are $z>4$ quasars. This sample extends measurements of the quasar luminosity function $\sim$1.5 mag fainter than our previous work in SDSS Stripe 82. The resulting l…
Using numerical cosmological simulations completed under the "Cosmic Reionization On Computers" (CROC) project, I explore theoretical predictions for the faint end of the galaxy UV luminosity functions at $z\geq 6$. A commonly used Schechter function approximation with the magnitude cut at $M_{\rm CUT}\sim-13$ provides a reasonable fit to the actual luminosity function of simulated galaxies. When the Schechter functional form is forced on the luminosity functions from the simulations, the magnitude cut $M_{\rm CUT}$ is found to vary between $-12$ and $-14$ with a mild redshift dependence. An a…
With the Hubble Frontier Fields program, gravitational lensing has provided a powerful way to extend the study of the ultraviolet luminosity function (LF) of galaxies at $z \sim 6$ down to unprecedented magnitude limits. At the same time, significant discrepancies between different studies were found at the very faint end of the LF. In an attempt to understand such disagreements, we present a comprehensive assessment of the uncertainties associated with the lensing models and the size distribution of galaxies. We use end-to-end simulations from the source plane to the final LF that account for…
We present new results from the widest narrow band survey search for Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters at z=5.7, just after reionization. We survey a total of 7 deg$^2$ spread over the COSMOS, UDS and SA22 fields. We find over 11,000 line emitters, out of which 514 are robust Lya candidates at z=5.7 within a volume of 6.3x10$^6$ Mpc$^3$. Our Lya emitters span a wide range in Lya luminosities, from faint to bright (L$_{\rm Lyα}\sim10^{42.5-44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and rest-frame equivalent widths (EW$_0$~25-1000 Å) in a single, homogeneous data-set. By combining all our fields we find that the faint end slo…
Recent measurements of the Luminosity Function (LF) of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR, $z\gsim6$) indicate a very steep increase of the number density of low-mass galaxies populating the LF faint-end. However, as star formation in low-mass halos can be easily depressed or even quenched by ionizing radiation, a turnover is expected at some faint UV magnitudes. Using a physically-motivated analytical model, we quantify reionization feedback effects on the LF faint-end shape. We find that if reionization feedback is neglected, the power-law Schechter parameterization characterizing th…
We present the comprehensive analyses of faint dropout galaxies up to $z\sim10$ with the first full-depth data set of Abell 2744 lensing cluster and parallel fields observed by the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program. We identify $54$ dropouts at $z\sim5-10$ in the HFF fields, and enlarge the size of $z\sim9$ galaxy sample obtained to date. Although the number of highly magnified ($μ\sim10$) galaxies is small due to the tiny survey volume of strong lensing, our study reaches the galaxies' intrinsic luminosities comparable to the deepest-field HUDF studies. We derive UV luminosity functions wi…
We predict Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) luminosity functions (LFs) of Ly$α$-selected galaxies (Ly$α$ emitters, or LAEs) at $z=3-6$ using the phenomenological model of Dijkstra & Wyithe (2012). This model combines observed UV-LFs of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs, or drop out galaxies), with constraints on their distribution of Ly$α$ line strengths as a function of UV-luminosity and redshift. Our analysis shows that while Ly$α$ LFs of LAEs are generally not Schechter functions, these provide a good description over the luminosity range of $\log_{10}( L_α/{\rm erg}\,{\rm s}^{-1})=41-44$. Motivated by this resu…
Characterizing the evolution of the faint end of the cluster red sequence (RS) galaxy luminosity function (GLF) with redshift is a milestone in understanding galaxy evolution. However, the community is still divided in that respect, hesitating between an enrichment of the RS due to efficient quenching of blue galaxies from $z\sim1$ to present-day or a scenario in which the RS is built at a higher redshift and does not evolve afterwards. Recently, it has been proposed that surface brightness (SB) selection effects could possibly solve the literature disagreement, accounting for the diminishing …
We report a new analysis of the Hubble Frontier Fields clusters Abell 2744 and MACS 0416 using wavelet decomposition to remove the cluster light, enabling the detection of highly magnified (>50x) galaxies a factor of 10x fainter in luminosity than previous studies. We find 167 galaxies at z > 6, and with this sample we are able to characterize the UV luminosity function to M_UV = -12.5 at z ~ 6, -14 at z ~ 7 and -15 at z ~ 8. We find a steep faint-end slope (alpha <-2), and with our improved statistics at the faint end we reduce the fractional uncertainty on alpha to <2% at z ~ 6 - 7 and 4% at…
The discovery of faint FR~I radio jets in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5322 is reported here using 144 MHz LOFAR image. The jets have an angular extent of $\sim40$ arcmin or a projected physical extent of $\sim350$ kpc. The faint jets remain well collimated and disappear in the intergalactic medium, without any visible hotspot or radio lobes. The jets detected up to $\sim20$ kpc extent at higher frequencies are relatively bright within the optical extent of the galaxy but become faint abruptly outside, where detection is made only in the LOFAR image. The total radio luminosity of the galax…
