In this work, we analyzed a recent proposal to detect $SU(N)$ continuum Yang-Mills sectors labeled by center vortices, inspired by Laplacian-type center gauges in the lattice. Initially, after the introduction of appropriate external sources, we obtained a rich set of sector-dependent Ward identities, which can be used to control the form of the divergences. Next, we were able to show the all-order multiplicative renormalizability of the center-vortex free sector. These are important steps towards the establishment of a first principles, well-defined, and calculable Yang-Mills ensemble.
Studying the gauge-invariant renormalizability of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory using the background field method and the BV-formalism, we derive a classical master-equation homogeneous with respect to the antibracket by introducing antifield partners to the background fields and parameters. The constructed model can be renormalized by the standard method of introducing counterterms. This model does not have (exact) multiplicative renormalizability but it does have this property in the physical sector (quasimultiplicative renormalizability).
A modified generally covariant Yang-Mills action, which depends on the complex structure of spacetime and not its metric, is proved to be renormalizable. This proof makes this Lagrangian model the unique known generally covariant four dimensional model to be renormalizable without higher order derivatives. The first order one-loop diagrams are computed in an appropriate gauge condition and they are found to be finite.
Recently, a new procedure to quantize the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the nonperturbative regime was proposed. The idea is to divide the configuration space $\{A_μ\}$ into sectors labeled by different topological degrees of freedom and fix the gauge separately on each one of them. As Singer's theorem on gauge copies only refers to gauge fixing conditions that are global in $\{A_μ\}$, this construction might avoid the Gribov problem. In this work, we present a proof of the renormalizability in the center-vortex sectors, thus establishing the calculability of the Yang-Mills center-vortex ensemb…
We construct a vector gauge invariant transverse field configuration $V^H$, consisting of the well-known superfield $V$ and of a Stueckelberg-like chiral superfield. The renormalizability of the Super Yang Mills action in the Landau gauge is analyzed in the presence of a gauge invariant mass term $m^2 \int dV \mathcal{M}(V^H)$, with $\mathcal{M}(V^H)$ a power series in $V^H$. Unlike the original Stueckelberg action, the resulting action turns out to be renormalizable to all orders.
We show that pure Yang-Mills theories with Lorentz violation are renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory. To do this, we employ the algebraic renormalization technique. Specifically, we control the breaking terms with a suitable set of external sources which, eventually, attain certain physical values. The Abelian case is also analyzed as a starting point. The main result is that the renormalizability of the usual Maxwell and Yang-Mills sectores are both left unchanged. Furthermore, in contrast to Lorentz violating QED, the odd CPT violation sector of Yang-Mills theories renormaliz…
We argue that Yang-Mills theory on noncommutative torus, expressed in the Fourrier modes, is described by a gauge theory in a usual commutative space, the gauge group being a generalization of the area-preserving diffeomorphisms to the noncommutative case. In this way, performing the loop calculation in this gauge theory in the continuum limit we show that this theory is {\it one loop renormalizable}, and discuss the UV and IR limits. The moduli space of the vacua of the noncommutative super Yang-Mills theories in (2+1) dimensions is discussed.
The $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super Yang-Mills theory in the presence of the local composite operator $A^2$ is analyzed in the Wess-Zumino gauge by employing the Landau gauge fixing condition. Due to the superymmetric structure of the theory, two more composite operators, $A_μγ_μλ$ and $\barλλ$, related to the susy variations of $A^2$ are also introduced. A BRST invariant action containing all these operators is obtained. An all order proof of the multiplicative renormalizability of the resulting theory is then provided by means of the algebraic renormalization setup. Though, due to the non-linear reali…
The renormalization of $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super Yang-Mills theory with the presence of the local composite operators $AA$, $A_μγ_μλ$ and $\barλλ$ is analyzed in the Wess-Zumino gauge, employing the Landau condition. An all-orders proof of the renormalizability of the theory is given by means of the Algebraic Renormalization procedure. Only three renormalization constants are needed, which can be identified with the coupling constant, gauge field, and gluino renormalization. The non-renormalization theorem of the gluon--ghost--anti-ghost vertex in the Landau gauge is shown to remain valid in $\mat…
Effective field theory of massive Yang-Mills fields interacting with fermions is considered. Perturbative renormalizability in the sense of effective field theory is shown. It is argued that the limit of vanishing vector boson mass leads to massless gauge effective field theory. Possible relevance for the solution to the strong CP problem is discussed.
In this paper the stability and the renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory in the Background Field Gauge are studied. By means of Ward Identities of Background gauge invariance and Slavnov-Taylor Identities the stability of the classical model is proved and, in a regularization independent way, its renormalizability is verified. A prescription on how to build the counterterms is given and the possible anomalies which may appear for Ward Identities and for Slavnov-Taylor Identities are shown.
The background gauge renormalization of the first order formulation of the Yang-Mills theory is studied by using the BRST identities. Together with the background symmetry, these identities allow for an iterative proof of renormalizability to all orders in perturbation theory. However, due to the fact that certain improper diagrams which violate the BRST symmetry should be removed, the renormalizability must be deduced indirectly. The recursive method involves rescalings and mixings of the fields, which lead to a renormalized effective action for the background field theory.
The local composite operator $A_μ^{2}$ is analysed within the algebraic renormalization in Yang-Mills theories in linear covariant gauges. We establish that it is multiplicatively renormalizable to all orders of perturbation theory. Its anomalous dimension is computed to two-loops in the MSbar scheme.
In this work we discuss a class of nonlinear covariant gauges for Yang-Mills theories which enjoy the property of being multiplicatively renormalizable to all orders. This property follows from the validity of a linearly broken identity, known as the ghost Ward identity. Furthermore, thanks to this identity, it turns out that the local composite dimension two gluon operator $A_μ^{a}A_μ^{a}$ can be introduced in a mulptiplicatively renormalizable way.
We prove by explicit calculation that Feynman graphs in noncommutative Yang-Mills theory made of repeated insertions into itself of arbitrarily many one-loop ghost propagator corrections are renormalizable by local counterterms. This provides a strong support for the renormalizability conjecture of that model.
In previous work arXiv:1009.4135 we have shown that the soft breaking of the BRST symmetry arising within the Gribov-Zwanziger framework can be converted into a linear breaking, while preserving the nilpotency of the BRST operator. Due to its compatibility with the Quantum Action Principle, the linearly broken BRST symmetry directly translates into a set of Slavnov-Taylor identities. We show that these identities guarantee the multiplicative renormalizability of both Gribov-Zwanziger and Refined Gribov-Zwanziger theories to all orders. The known property that only two renormalization factors a…
We show that a spinless theory of gravity is also allowed by the kinematics of general relativity. In the absence of fermions the spinless theory of gravity and the theories in the standard model of particle physics are the same Yang-Mills theories with different gauge groups. Therefore, every theorem of a pure Yang-Mills theory is valid for the spinless theory of gravity in vacuum, i.e. it is unitary and renormalizable to all orders. When fermions are present the spinless theory of gravity has an extra constraint due to the tetrad postulate. A path integral quantization of this theory and all…
We introduce the concept of general gauge theory which includes Yang-Mills models. In the framework of the causal approach and show that the anomalies can appear only in the vacuum sector of the identities obtained from the gauge invariance condition by applying derivatives with respect to the basic fields. Then we provide a general result about the absence of anomalies in higher orders of perturbation theory. This result reduces the renormalizability proof to the study of lower orders of perturbation theory. For the Yang-Mills model one can perform this computation explicitly and obtains its …
We study the BRST renormalization of an alternative formulation of the Yang-Mills theory, where the matrix-propagator of the gluon and the complementary fields is diagonal. This procedure involves scalings as well as non-linear mixings of the fields and sources. We show, in the Landau gauge, that the BRST identities implement a recursive proof of renormalizability to all orders.
We examine the renormalization of the first order formulation of Yang-Mills theory, by using the BRST idenities. These preserve the gauge invariance of the theory and enable a recursive proof of renormalizability to higher orders in perturbation theory. The renormalization involves non-linear mixings as well as re-scalings of the fields and sources, which lead to a renormalized action at all orders.
In the paper, within the background-field method, the structure of renormalizations is studied as for Yang-Mills fields interacting with a multiplet of spinor fields. By extending the Faddeev-Popov action with extra fields and parameters, one is allowed to establish the multiplicative character of the renormalizability. The renormalization of the physical parameters is shown to be gauge-independent.
Recently, some reformulations of the Yang-Mills theory inspired by the Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition have been developed in order to understand confinement from the viewpoint of the dual superconductivity. In this paper we focus on the reformulated $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory in the minimal option with $U(N-1)$ stability group. Despite existing numerical simulations on the lattice we perform the perturbative analysis to one-loop level as a first step towards the non-perturbative analytical treatment. First, we give the Feynman rules and calculate all renormalization factors to obtain the stand…
The spectrum of the massive CPT-odd Yang-Mills propagator with Lorentz violation is performed at tree-level. The modification is due to mass terms generated by the exigence of multiplicative renormalizability of Yang-Mills theory with Lorentz violation. The causality analysis is performed from group and front velocities for both, spacelike and timelike background tensors. It is show that, by demanding causality, it is always possible to define a physical sector for the gauge propagator. Hence, it is expected that the model is also unitary, if one takes the Faddeev-Popov ghost into account.
In the paper, within the background field method, the renormalization and the gauge dependence is studied as for an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with multiplets of spinor and scalar fields. By extending the quantum action of the BV-formalism with an extra fermion vector field and a constant fermion parameter, the multiplicative character of the renormalizability is proven. The renormalization of all the physical parameters of the theory under consideration is shown to be gauge-independent.
Recently, a reformulation of the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory inspired by the Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition has been developed in order to understand confinement from the viewpoint of the dual superconductivity. The concept of infrared Abelian dominance plays an important role in the realization of this concept and through numerical simulations on the lattice, evidence was found for example in the form of the dynamical mass generation for certain gluon degrees of freedom. A promising analytical attempt to explain the generation of such masses is through condensates of mass dimension two. In thi…
Quantum properties of topological Yang-Mills theory in (anti-)self-dual Landau gauge were recently investigated by the authors. We extend the analysis of renormalizability for two generalized classes of gauges; each of them depending on one gauge parameter. The (anti-)self-dual Landau gauge is recovered at the vanishing of each gauge parameter. The theory shows itself to be renormalizable in these classes of gauges. Moreover, we discuss the ambiguity on the choice of the renormalization factors (which is not present in usual Yang-Mills theories) and argue a possible origin of such ambiguity.
We reconsider the renormalizability of topological Yang-Mills field theories in (anti-)self-dual Landau gauges. By employing algebraic renormalization techniques we show that there is only one independent renormalization. Moreover, due to the rich set of Ward identities, we are able to obtain some important exact features of the (connected and one-particle irreducible) two-point functions. Specifically, we show that all two-point functions are tree-level exact.
We study the U(N) non-commutative Yang-Mills theory at the one-loop approximation. We check renormalizability and gauge invariance of the model and calculate the one-loop beta function. The interaction of the SU(N) gauge bosons with the U(1) gauge boson plays an important role in the consistency check. In particular, the SU(N) theory by itself is not consistent. We also find that the theta --> 0 limit of the U(N) theory does not converge to the ordinary SU(N) x U(1) commutative theory, even at the planar limit. Finally, we comment on the UV/IR mixing.
The gauge fixing procedure for N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) is proposed in the context of the stochastic quantization method (SQM). The stochastic gauge fixing, which was formulated by Zwanziger for Yang-Mills theory, is extended to SYM_4 in the superfield formalism by introducing a chiral and an anti-chiral superfield as the gauge fixing functions. It is shown that SQM with the stochastic gauge fixing reproduces the probability distribution of SYM_4, defined by the Faddeev-Popov prescription, in the equilibrium limit with an appropriate choice of the stochastic gauge fixing func…
A generalization of the two-dimensional Yang-Mills and generalized Yang-Mills theory is introduced in which the building B-F theory is nonlocal in the auxiliary field. The classical and quantum properties of this nonlocal generalization are investigated and it is shown that for large gauge groups, there exist a simple correspondence between the properties a nonlocal theory and its corresponding local theory.
Using an infinite number of fields, we construct actions for D=4 self-dual Yang-Mills with manifest Lorentz invariance and for D=10 super-Yang-Mills with manifest super-Poincaré invariance. These actions are generalizations of the covariant action for the D=2 chiral boson which was first studied by McClain, Wu, Yu and Wotzasek.
We propose a massive Yang-Mills model blessed with both physical unitarity and renormalizability without Higgs particles. This is achieved by a novel nonlinear but local transformation from the original fields in the Curci-Ferrari model to the massive vector field with the spin one, which has the correct physical degrees of freedom and invariant under an extended BRST transformation. We clarify the reason for failures of the preceding attempts and check the physical unitarity in perturbation theory.
We will discuss an integrable structure for weakly coupled superconformal Yang-Mills theories, describe certain equivalences for the Yangian algebra, and fill a technical gap in our previous study of this subject.
We consider a N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons model, coupled to matter, in the Wess-Zumino gauge. The theory is characterized by a superalgebra which displays two kinds of obstructions to the closure on the translations: field dependent gauge transformations, which give rise to an infinite algebra, and equations of motion. The aim is to put the formalism in a closed form, off-shell, without introducing auxiliary fields. In order to perform that, we collect all the symmetries of the model into a unique nilpotent Slavnov-Taylor operator. Furthermore, we prove the renormalizability of …
The planar Yang-Mills theory in three spatial dimensions is examined in a particular representation which explicitly embodies factorization. The effective planar Yang-Mills theory Hamiltonian is constructed in this representation.
We pursue the study of SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge by taking into account the effects of the Gribov horizon. The Gribov approximation, previously introduced in [1], is improved through the introduction of the horizon function, which is constructed under the requirements of localizability and renormalizability. By following Zwanziger's treatment of the horizon function in the Landau gauge, we prove that, when cast in local form, the horizon term of the maximal Abelian gauge leads to a quantized theory which enjoys multiplicative renormalizability, a feature wh…
Recent developments in the determination of the planar S-matrix of N=4 Super Yang-Mills are closely related to its Yangian symmetry. Here we provide evidence for a yet unobserved additional symmetry: the Yangian level-one helicity operator.
The BCFW recursion relation in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory is solved using Yang-Baxter $R$-operators in the NMHV sector. Explicit expressions for $\mathcal{R}$-invariants are obtained in terms of the chains of $R$-operators acting on an appropriate basic state.
The large-N behavior of Yang-Mills and generalized Yang-Mills theories in the double-scaling limit is investigated. By the double-scaling limit, it is meant that the area of the manifold on which the theory is defined, is itself a function of N. It is shown that phase transitions of different orders occur, depending on the functional dependence of the area on N. The finite-size scalings of the system are also investigated. Specifically, the dependence of the dominant representation on A, for large but finite N is determined.
We present new relations for scattering amplitudes of color ordered gluons and gravitons in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. Tree-level amplitudes of arbitrary multiplicities and polarizations involving up to three gravitons and up to two color traces are reduced to partial amplitudes of pure Yang-Mills theory. In fact, the double-trace identities apply to Einstein-Yang-Mills extended by a dilaton and a B-field. Our results generalize recent work of Stieberger and Taylor for the single graviton case with a single color trace. As the derivation is made in the dimension-agnostic Cachazo-He-Yuan forma…
We analyze in an effective Lagrangian framework the connection between Super QCD (Super Yang Mills) and QCD (Yang Mills) by highlighting the crucial role that the zero modes play in the process of decoupling gluinos and squarks.
We show that the solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills-dilation and Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theories described in a sequence of papers by Kleihaus and Kunz are not regular in the gauge field part.
The existence of a "bonus" U(1) level-one Yangian symmetry of N=4 super-Yang-Mills has recently been proposed. We provide evidence for this proposal by constructing the BRST-invariant nonlocal charge in the pure spinor sigma model corresponding to this bonus level-one symmetry. We also construct analogous charges for bonus U(1) symmetries at all odd levels of the Yangian.
We define a natural generalized symmetry of the Yang-Mills equations as an infinitesimal transformation of the Yang-Mills field, built in a local, gauge invariant, and Poincaré invariant fashion from the Yang-Mills field strength and its derivatives to any order, which maps solutions of the field equations to other solutions. On the jet bundle of Yang-Mills connections we introduce a spinorial coordinate system that is adapted to the solution subspace defined by the Yang-Mills equations. In terms of this coordinate system the complete classification of natural symmetries is carried out in a st…
For semisimple groups, possibly multiplied by U(1)'s, the number of Yang-Mills gauge fields is equal to the number of generators of the group. In this paper, it is shown that, for non-semisimple groups, the number of Yang-Mills fields can be larger. These additional Yang-Mills fields are not irrelevant because they appear in the gauge transformations of the original Yang-Mills fields. Such non-semisimple Yang-Mills theories may lead to physical consequences worth studying. The non-semisimple group with only two generators that do not commute is studied in detail.
Contour gauges are discussed in the framework of canonical formalism. We find flux operator algebras with the structure constants of underlying Yang-Mills theory.
Using the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formalism, we prove a recursive expansion of tree level single trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) amplitudes with arbitrary number of gluons and gravitons, which is valid for general spacetime dimensions and any helicity configurations. The recursion is written in terms of fewer-graviton EYM amplitudes and pure Yang-Mills (YM) amplitudes, which can be further carried out until we reach an expansion in terms of pure YM amplitudes in Kleiss-Kuijf (KK) basis. Our expansion then generates naturally a spanning tree structure rooted on gluons whose vertices are gravitons…
This article contains lecture notes of M. Shifman from the Saalburg Summer School 2004. The topic is supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, in particular the gluino condensate in pure SUSY gluodynamics.
We construct a four-parameter class of self-dual instanton solutions of the classical SU(2)-Yang-Mills equations in a closed Euclidean Robertson-Walker space-time.
Using the first order formalism (BFYM) of the Yang-Mills theory we show that it displays an embedded topological sector corresponding to the field content of the Topological Yang-Mills theory (TYM). This picture arises after a proper redefinition of the fields of BFYM and gives a clear representation of the non perturbative part of the theory in terms of the topological sector. In this setting the calculation of the $vev$ of a YM observable is translated into the calculation of a corresponding (non topological) quantity in TYM. We then compare the topological observables of TYM with a similar …
The large-group behavior of the nonlocal YM$_2$'s and gYM$_2$'s on a cylinder or a disk is investigated. It is shown that this behavior is similar to that of the corresponding local theory, but with the area of the cylinder replaced by an effective area depending on the dominant representation. The critical areas for nonlocal YM$_2$'s on a cylinder with some special bounary conditions are also obtained.
Recently, Witten proposed a topological string theory in twistor space that is dual to a weakly coupled gauge theory. In this lectures we will discuss aspects of the twistor string theory. Along the way we will learn new things about Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes. The string theory sheds light on Yang-Mills perturbation theory and leads to new methods for computing Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes.
It is known that the Yangian of PSU(2,2|4) is a symmetry of the tree-level S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills. On the other hand, the complete one-loop dilatation operator in the same theory commutes with the level-one Yangian generators only up to certain boundary terms found by Dolan, Nappi and Witten. Using a result by Zwiebel, we show how the Yangian symmetry of the tree-level S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills implies precisely the Yangian invariance, up to boundary terms, of the one-loop dilatation operator.
We propose $N=2$ holomorphic Yang-Mills theory on compact Kähler manifolds and show that there exists a simple mapping from the $N=2$ topological Yang-Mills theory. It follows that intersection parings on the moduli space of Einstein-Hermitian connections can be determined by examining the small coupling behavior of the $N=2$ holomorphic Yang-Mills theory. This paper is a higher dimensional generalization of the Witten's work on physical Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions.
We conjecture that every rational Yangian invariant in N=4 SYM theory satisfies a recently introduced notion of cluster adjacency. We provide evidence for this conjecture by using the Sklyanin Poisson bracket on Gr(4,n) to check numerous examples.
