The aim of this article is to explore a potential usability of a photon-photon self-interaction from the noncommutative quantum electrodynamics (NCQED) in the case of light-by-light scattering ($γγ\toγγ$) in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions, a reaction measured recently by ATLAS and planned for future experiments in hadron-hadron colliders. We compute the total cross section from both, the full one-loop standard model (SM) and the tree-level NCQED amplitudes, in the equivalent photon approximation with impact parameters, for various noncommutative scales, $\rmΛ_{NC}$, and incoming nuclear spin-energy combinations. We find that NCQED contribution to the cross section has considerable increase at diphoton invariant mass range higher than $\rmΛ_{NC}$, while the SM contribution is strongly suppressed in such region. Our results show that the current ATLAS $\rm\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV experiment can only probe $\rmΛ_{NC}<100$ GeV region. On the other hand, future hadron-hadron collider proposals could have the potential to extend to $\rmΛ_{NC}\lesssim 300$ GeV region, making the performance of $\rm Pb+Pb(γγ)\to Pb+Pbγγ$ scattering on testing space-time noncommutativity close to that of the previously proposed photon-photon mode of linear electron-positron collider.
In an approach to noncommutative gauge theories, where the full noncommutative behavior is delimited by the presence of the UV and IR cutoffs, we consider the possibility of describing a system at a temperature T in a box of size L. Employing a specific form of UV/IR relationship inherent in such an approach of restrictive noncommutativity, we derive, for a given temperature T, an upper bound on the parameter of spacetime noncommutativity Lambda_NC ~ |theta|^{-1/2}. Considering such epochs in the very early universe which are expected to reflect spacetime noncommutativity to a quite degree, li…
We construct consistent noncommutative (NC) deformations of the Randall-Sundrum spacetime that solve the NC Einstein equations with a non-trivial Poisson tensor depending on the fifth coordinate. In a class of these deformations where the Poisson tensor is exponentially localized on one of the branes (the NC-brane), we study the effects on bulk particles in terms of Lorentz-violating operators induced by NC-brane interactions. We sketch two models in which massive bulk particles mediate NC effects to an almost-commutative SM-brane, such that observables at high energy colliders are enhanced wi…
We investigate Bhabha scattering with the Seiberg-Witten expended noncommutative standard model scenario to first order of the noncommutativity parameter $Θ_{μν}$. This study is based on the definition of the noncommutativity parameter that we have assumed. We explore the noncommutative scale $Λ_{_{NC}}\geq0.8$ TeV considering different machine energy ranging from $0.5$ TeV to $1.5$ TeV.
There are good reasons to suspect that spacetime at Planck scales is noncommutative. Typically this noncommutativity is controlled by fixed "vectors" or "tensors" with numerical entries. For the Moyal spacetime, it is the antisymmetric matrix $θ_{μν}$. In approaches enforcing Poincaré invariance, these deform or twist the method of (anti-)symmetrization of identical particle state vectors. We argue that the earth's rotation and movements in the cosmos are "sudden" events to Pauli-forbidden processes. They induce (twisted) bosonic components in state vectors of identical spinorial particles in …
We introduce particle phenomenology on the noncommutative spacetime called the Groenewold-Moyal plane. The length scale of spcetime noncommutativity is constrained from the CPT violation measurements in $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ system and $g-2$ difference of $μ^+ - μ^-$. The $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ system provides an upper bound on the length scale of spacetime noncommutativity of the order of $10^{-32} \textrm{m}$, corresponding to a lower energy bound $E$ of the order of $E \gtrsim 10^{16}\textrm{GeV}$. The $g-2$ difference of $μ^+ - μ^-$ constrains the noncommutativity length scale to be of the orde…
We study the effects of noncommutativity of spacetime geometry on the thermodynamical properties of the de Sitter horizon. We show that noncommutativity results in modifications in temperature, entropy and vacuum energy and that these modifications are of order of the Planck scale, suggesting that the size of the noncommutative parameter should be close to that of the Planck. In an alternative way to deal with noncommutativity, we obtain a quantization rule for the entropy. Since noncommutativity in spacetime geometry modifies the Heisenberg algebra and introduces the general uncertainty princ…
If neutrinos are Dirac particles and their right-handed component can be copiously produced in the early universe, then they could influence a direct observation of the cosmic neutrino background, which, most likely, will come about with the recently proposed PTOLEMY experiment. For the production mechanism of right-handed neutrinos we use a state-of-the-art version of gauge field theory deformed by the spacetime noncommutativity, to disclose by it not only the decoupling temperature for the said neutrino component, but also the otherwise hidden coupling temperature. Considering two relevant p…
We discuss a constraint on the scale $Λ_{\rm NC}$ of noncommutative (NC) gauge field theory arising from consideration of the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) of light elements. The propagation of neutrinos in the NC background described by an antisymmetric tensor $θ^{μν}$ does result in a tree-level vector-like coupling to photons in a generation-independent manner, raising thus a possibility to have an appreciable contribution of three light right-handed (RH) fields to the energy density of the universe at nucleosynthesis time. Considering elastic scattering processes of the RH neutrinos off c…
We show that the cosmological constant appears as a Lagrange multiplier if nature is described by a canonical noncommutative spacetime. It is thus an arbitrary parameter unrelated to the action and thus to vacuum fluctuations. The noncommutative algebra restricts general coordinate transformations to four-volume preserving noncommutative coordinate transformations. The noncommutative gravitational action is thus an unimodular noncommutative gravity. We show that spacetime noncommutativity provides a very natural justification to an unimodular gravity solution to the cosmological problem. We ob…
We compute the beta-functions of the standard model formulated on a noncommutative spacetime. If we assume that the scale for spacetime noncommutativity is of the order of 2.2 \times 10^{15} GeV we find that the three gauge couplings of the standard model merge at a scale of 2.3 \times 10^{17} GeV. The proton lifetime is thus much longer than in conventional unification models.
If new physics were capable to push the neutrino-nucleon inelastic cross section three orders of magnitude beyond the standard-model (SM) prediction, then ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos would have already been observed at neutrino observatories. We use such a constraint to reveal information on the scale of noncommutativity (NC) Lambda_NC in noncommutative gauge field theories (NCGFT) where neutrinos possess a tree-level coupling to photons in a generation-independent manner. In the energy range of interest (10^10 to 10^11 GeV) the theta-expansion (|theta| ~ 1/Lambda_NC^2) and therefore the…
Using a fully-fledged formulation of gauge field theory deformed by the spacetime noncommutativity, we study its impact on relic neutrino direct detection, as proposed recently by the PTOLEMY experiment. The noncommutative background tends to influence the propagating neutrinos by providing them with a tree-level vector-like coupling to photons, enabling thus otherwise right-handed (RH) neutrinos to be thermally produced in the early universe. Such a new component in the universe's background radiation has been switched today to the almost fully active sea of non-relativistic neutrinos, exerti…
We study the effects of spacetime noncommutativity on the nonequilibrium dynamics of particles in a thermal bath. We show that the noncommutative thermal bath does not suffer from any further IR/UV mixing problem in the sense that all the finite-temperature non-planar quantities are free from infrared singularities. We also point out that the combined effect of finite temperature and noncommutative geometry has a distinct effect on the nonequilibrium dynamics of particles propagating in a thermal bath: depending on the momentum of the mode of concern, noncommutative geometry may switch on or s…
Experimental limits on the violation of four-dimensional Lorentz invariance imply that noncommutativity among ordinary spacetime dimensions must be small. Noncommutativity among extra, compactified spatial dimensions, however, is far less constrained and may have discernable collider signatures. Here we study the experimental consequences of noncommutative QED in six dimensions, with noncommutativity restricted to a TeV-scale bulk. Assuming the orbifold T^2/Z_2, we construct the effective four-dimensional theory and study interactions unique to the noncommutative case. New vertices involving t…
We derive the thermal correlators for twisted quantum fields on noncommutative spacetime. We show that the thermal expectation value of the number operator is same as in commutative spacetime, but that higher correlators are sensitive to the noncommutativity parameters $θ^{μν}$.
The generation of large-scale magnetic fields is studied in dilaton electromagnetism in noncommutative inflationary cosmology taking into account the effects of the spacetime uncertainty principle motivated by string theory. We show that it is possible to generate large-scale magnetic fields with sufficient strength to account for the observed fields in galaxies and clusters of galaxies through only adiabatic compression without dynamo amplification mechanism in models of power-law inflation based on spacetime noncommutativity without introducing a huge hierarchy between the dilaton's potentia…
Modern cosmology has now emerged as a testing ground for theories beyond the standard model of particle physics. In this paper, we consider quantum fluctuations of the inflaton scalar field on certain noncommutative spacetimes and look for noncommutative corrections in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Inhomogeneities in the distribution of large scale structure and anisotropies in the CMB radiation can carry traces of noncommutativity of the early universe. We show that its power spectrum becomes direction-dependent when spacetime is noncommutative. (The effects due to noncommu…

One-loop theta-exact quantum corrections to the neutrino propagator are computed in noncommutative U*(1) gauge-theory based on Seiberg-Witten maps. Our closed form results show that the one-loop correction contains a hard 1/epsilon UV divergence, as well as a logarithmic IR-divergent term of the type ln sqrt(theta p)^2, thus considerably softening the usual UV/IR mixing phenomenon. We show that both of these problematic terms vanish for a certain choice of the noncommutative parameter theta which preserves unitarity. We find non-perturbative modifications of the neutrino dispersion relations w…
We study the scattering of noncommutative vortices, based on the noncommutative field theory developed in [Phys. Rev. D 75, 045009 (2007)], as a way to understand the interaction of cosmic strings. In the center-of-mass frame, the effects of noncommutativity vanish, and therefore the reconnection of cosmic strings occurs in an identical manner to the commutative case. However, when scattering occurs in a frame other than the center-of-mass frame, strings still reconnect but the well known 90-degree scattering no longer need correspond to the head on collision of the strings, due to the breakdo…
We study constraints on a number of patch inflationary models in noncommutative spacetime using a compilation of recent high-precision observational data. In particular, the four-dimensional General Relativistic (GR) case, the Randall-Sundrum (RS) and Gauss-Bonnet (GB) braneworld scenarios are investigated by extending previous commutative analyses to the infrared limit of a maximally symmetric realization of the stringy uncertainty principle. The effect of spacetime noncommutativity modifies the standard consistency relation between the tensor spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We…
Noncommutative spacetimes lead to nonlocal quantum field theories (qft's) where spin-statistics theorems cannot be proved. For this reason, and also backed by detailed arguments, it has been suggested that they get corrected on such spacetimes leading to small violations of the Pauli principle. In a recent paper \cite{Pauli}, Pauli-forbidden transitions from spacetime noncommutativity were calculated and confronted with experiments. Here we give details of the computation missing from this paper. The latter was based on a spacetime $\mathcal{B}_{χ\vec{n}}$ different from the Moyal plane. We ar…
We consider Yukawa couplings in a theta-exact approach to noncommutative gauge field theory and show that both Dirac and singlet Majorana neutrino mass terms can be consistently accommodated. This shows that in fact the whole neutrino-mass extended standard model on noncommutative spacetime can the formulated in the new nonperturbative (in theta) approach which eliminates the previous restriction of Seiberg-Witten map based theories to low-energy phenomena. Spacetime noncommutativity induced couplings between neutrinos and photons as well as Z-bosons appear quite naturally in the model. We der…
We advocate a novel perspective on the phenomenology of a framework with spacetime noncommutativity which is of established relevance for string theory. Our analysis applies to cases in which the noncommutativity parameters are arranged according to the criteria of "light-like noncommutativity" and ultraviolet supersymmetry is assumed, so that the implications of the characteristic mechanism of ultraviolet/infrared mixing are relatively soft. We also observe that an analogous case of soft ultraviolet-infrared mixing is present in a previously-proposed Loop-quantum-gravity-inspired description …
Experimental limits on the violation of four-dimensional Lorentz invariance imply that noncommutativity among ordinary spacetime dimensions must be small. In this talk, I review the most stringent bounds on noncommutative field theories and suggest a possible means of evading them: noncommutativity may be restricted to extra, compactified spatial dimensions. Such theories have a number of interesting features, including Abelian gauge fields whose Kaluza-Klein excitations have self couplings. We consider six-dimensional QED in a noncommutative bulk, and discuss the collider signatures of the mo…
We propose a variation of spacetime noncommutative field theory to realize the stringy spacetime uncertainty relation without breaking any of the global symmetries of the homogeneous isotropic universe. We study the spectrum of metric perturbations in this model for a wide class of accelerating background cosmologies. Spacetime noncommutativity leads to a coupling between the fluctuation modes and the background cosmology which is nonlocal in time. For each mode, there is a critical time at which the spacetime uncertainty relation is saturated. This is the time when the mode is generated. Thes…
We study exclusive scattering of `hadrons' at high energy and fixed angle in (nonconformal) noncommutative gauge theories. Via gauge-string duality, we show that the noncommutativity renders the scattering soft, leading to exponential suppression. The result fits with the picture that, in noncommutative gauge theory, fundamental partons consist of extremely soft constituents and `hadrons' are made out of open Wilson lines.
We study the Möller and Bhabha scattering in the noncommutative extension of the standard model(SM) using the Seiberg-Witten maps of this to first order of the noncommutative parameter $θ_{μν}$. We look at the angular distribution $dσ/dΩ$ to explore the noncommutativity of space-time at around $Λ_{NC} \sim$ TeV and find that the distribution deviates significantly from the one obtained from the commutative version of the standard model.
Waves on ``commutative'' spacetimes like R^d are elements of the commutative algebra C^0(R^d) of functions on R^d. When C^0(R^d) is deformed to a noncommutative algebra {\cal A}_θ(R^d) with deformation parameter θ({\cal A}_0 (R^d) = C^0(R^d)), waves being its elements, are no longer complex-valued functions on R^d. Rules for their interpretation, such as measurement of their intensity, and energy, thus need to be stated. We address this task here. We then apply the rules to interference and diffraction for d \leq 4 and with time-space noncommutativity. Novel phenomena are encountered. Thus whe…
We argue that a field theory defined on noncommutative (NC) spacetime should be regarded as a theory of gravity, which we refer to as the emergent gravity. A whole point of the emergent gravity is essentially originated from the basic property: A NC spacetime is a (NC) phase space. This fact leads to two important consequences: (I) A NC field theory can basically be identified with a matrix model or a large N field theory where NC fields can be regarded as master fields of large N matrices. (II) NC fields essentially define vector (tetrad) fields. So they define a gravitational metric of some …
