We prove that given any $ε> 0$ and a primitive adelic Hilbert cusp form $f$ of weight $k=(k_1,k_2,...,k_n) \in (2 \mathbb{Z})^n$ and full level, there exists an integral ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ with $N(\mathfrak{m}) \ll_ε Q_{f}^{9/20+ ε} $ such that the $\mathfrak{m}$-th Fourier coefficient of $C_{f} (\mathfrak{m})$ of $f$ is negative. Here $n$ is the degree of the associated number field, $N(\mathfrak{m})$ is the norm of integral ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ and $Q_{f}$ is the analytic conductor of $f$. In the case of arbitrary weights, we show that there is an integral ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ with $N(\mathfrak{m}) \ll_ε Q_{f}^{1/2 + ε}$ such that $C_{f}(\mathfrak{m}) <0$. We also prove that when $k=(k_1,k_2,...,k_n) \in (2 \mathbb{Z})^n$, asymptotically half of the Fourier coefficients are positive while half are negative.
Starting from a Hilbert cusp form of weight $2\kap$, we will construct a Hilbert-Siegel cusp form of weight $\kap+\frac{m}{2}$ and degree $m$ and its transfer to inner forms of symplectic groups.
Associated to an (adelic) Hilbert modular form is a sequence of `Fourier coefficients' which uniquely determine the form. In this paper we characterize Hilbert modular cusp forms by the size of their Fourier coefficients. This answers in the affirmative a question posed by Winfried Kohnen.
The aim of this article is to study the fields generated by the Fourier coefficients of Hilbert newforms at arbitrary cusps. Precisely, given a cuspidal Hilbert newform $f$ and a matrix $σ$ in (a suitable conjugate of) the Hilbert modular group, we give a cyclotomic extension of the field generated by the Fourier coefficients at infinity which contains all the Fourier coefficients of $f||_kσ$.
In this article, we study the simultaneous sign changes of the Fourier coefficients of two Hilbert cusp forms of different integral weights. We also study the simultaneous non-vanishing of Fourier coefficients, of two distinct non-zero primitive Hilbert cuspidal non-CM eigenforms of integral weights, at powers of a fixed prime ideal.
We give a derivative version of the relative trace formula on PGL(2) studied in our previous work, and obtain a formula of an average of central values (derivatives) of automorphic $L$-functions for Hilbert cusp forms. As an application, we prove existence of Hilbert cusp forms with non-vanishing central values (derivatives) such that the absolute degrees of their Hecke fields are sufficiently large.
We combine the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lifting with the theta lifting to produce new CAP representations of metaplectic, symplectic and orthogonal groups. These constructions partially generalize the theories of Waldspurger on the Shimura correspondence and of Piatetski-Shapiro on the Saito-Kurokawa lifting to higher dimensions. Applications include a relation between Fourier coefficients of Hilbert cusp forms of weight k+1/2 and a weighted sum of the representation numbers of a quadratic form of rank 2k by a quadratic form of rank 4k.
Let K be a number field, let M be the Hilbert modular orbifold of K, and let m(q) be the probability measure uniformly supported on the cusp cross sections of M at height q. We generalize a method of Zagier and show that m(q) distributes uniformly with respect to the normalized Haar measure m on M as q tends to zero, and relate the rate by which m(q) approaches m to the Riemann hypothesis for the Dedekind zeta function of K.
Let $\bf f$ be a primitive Hilbert cusp form of weight $k$ and level $\mathfrak{n}$ with Fourier coefficients $c_{\bf f}(\mathfrak{m})$. We prove a non-trivial upper bound for almost all Fourier coefficients $c_{\bf f}(\mathfrak{m})$ of $\bf f$. This generalizes the bounds obtained by Luca, Radziwiłł and Shparlinski. We also prove the existence of infinitely many integral ideals $\mathfrak{m}$ for which the Fourier coefficients $c_{\bf f}(\mathfrak{m})$ have the improved upper bound and further we obtain a refinement of these integral ideals in terms of prime powers. In particular, this enable…
We elaborate an explicit version of the relative trace formula on $\PGL(2)$ over a totally real number field for the toral periods of Hilbert cusp forms along the diagonal split torus. As an application, we prove (i) a spectral equidistribution result in the level aspect for Satake parameters of holomorphic Hilbert cusp forms weighted by central $L$-values, and (ii) a bound of quadratic base change $L$-functions for Hilbert cusp forms with a subconvex exponent in the weight aspect.
We give an exact formula of the average of adjoint $L$-functions of holomorphic Hilbert cusp forms with a fixed weight and a square-free level, which is a generalization of Zagier's formula known for the case of elliptic cusp forms on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. As an application, we prove that the Satake parameters of Hilbert cusp forms with a fixed weight and with growing square-free levels are equidistributed in an ensemble constructed by values of the adjoint $L$-functions.
In this paper we prove that equations of the form $x^{13} + y^{13} = Cz^{p}$ have no non-trivial primitive solutions (a,b,c) such that $13 \nmid c$ if $p > 4992539$ for an infinite family of values for $C$. Our method consists in relating a solution (a,b,c) to the previous equation to a solution (a,b,c_1) of another Diophantine equation with coefficients in $\Q(\sqrt{13})$. We then construct Frey-curves associated with (a,b,c_1) and we prove modularity of them in order to apply the modular approach via Hilbert cusp forms over $\Q(\sqrt{13})$. We also prove a modularity result for elliptic curv…
We prove a strong form of the trivial zero conjecture at the central point for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a non-critically refined self-dual cohomological cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a totally real field, which is Iwahori spherical at places above $p$. In the case of a simple zero we adapt the approach of Greenberg and Stevens, based on the functional equation for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a nearly finite slope family and on improved $p$-adic $L$-functions that we construct using automorphic symbols and overconvergent cohomology. For higher order zeros we d…
Let $Γ$ be a cocompact, discrete, and irreducible subgroup of $\mathrm{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{R})^{n}$. Let $ν$ be a unitary character of $Γ$. For $k\in1\slash 2\,\mathbb{Z}$, let $\sknu$ denote the complex vector space of cusp forms of weight-$\tk=\k$ and nebentypus $ν^{2k}$ with respect to $Γ$. We assume that $ω_{X,ν}$, the line bundle of cusp forms of weight-$\tilde{1\slash 2}:=(1\slash 2,\ldots,1\slash2)$ with nebentypus $ν$ over $X$ exists. Let $\lbrace f_{1},\ldots,f_{j_{\tk}} \rbrace$ denote an orthonormal basis of $\sknu$. In this article, we show that as $k\rightarrow \infty$, the sum $\sum…
In this paper, we prove that a primitive Hilbert cusp form $\mathbf{g}$ is uniquely determined by the central values of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions $L(\mathbf{f}\otimes\mathbf{g}, \frac{1}{2})$, where $\mathbf{f}$ runs through all primitive Hilbert cusp forms of level $\mathfrak{q}$ for infinitely many prime ideals $\mathfrak{q}$. This result is a generalization of a theorem of Luo to the setting of totally real number fields.
Let F be a real quadratic field with ring of integers O and with class number 1. Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of GL_2 (O). We describe a technique to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology H^3 (Gamma; C). For F real quadratic this cohomology group contains the cuspidal cohomology corresponding to cuspidal Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2. Hence this technique gives a way to compute the Hecke action on these Hilbert modular forms.
We introduce a new fundamental domain for the cusp stabilizer of a Hilbert modular group over a real quadratic field K=Q(sqrt n). This is constructed as the union of Dirichlet domains for the maximal unipotent group, over the leaves in a foliation of the biplane. The region is the Cartesian product of the positive reals with a 3-dimensional tower formed by deformations of lattices in the ring of integers of K, and makes explicit the cusp cross section's Sol 3-manifold structure and Anosov diffeomorphism. We include computer generated images and data illustrating various examples.
We compute the p-adic Abel-Jacobi map of the product of a Hilbert modular surface and a modular curve at a null-homologous (modified) embedding of the modular curve in this product, evaluated on differentials associated to a Hilbert cuspidal form f of weight (2,2) and a cuspidal form of weight 2. We generalize this computation to suitable null-homological cycles in the fibre products of the universal families on the surface and the curve, evaluated at differentials associated to f and g of higher weights. We express the values of the p-adic Abel-Jacobi map at these weights in terms of a p-adic…
We prove an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel type theorem for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. In particular, the theorem applies to the log-singular metrics of Burgos-Kramer-Kühn. Our theorem is thus suitable for application to some non-compact Shimura varieties with their bundles of cusp forms. As an application, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that a primitive Hilbert cusp form $\mathbf{g}$ is uniquely determined by the central values of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions $L(\mathbf{f}\otimes\mathbf{g}, \frac{1}{2})$, where $\mathbf{f}$ runs through all primitive Hilbert cusp forms of weight $k$ for infinitely many weight vectors $k$. This work is a generalization of a result of Ganguly, Hoffstein, and Sengupta to the setting of totally real number fields, and it is a weight aspect analogue of the authors recent work.
Let F be a totally real field and G=GSp(4)_{/F}. In this paper, we show under a weak assumption that, given a Hecke eigensystem lambda which is (p,P)-ordinary for a fixed parabolic P in G, there exists a several variable p-adic family underline{lambda} of Hecke eigensystems (all of them (p,P)-nearly ordinary) which contains lambda. The assumption is that lambda is cohomological for a regular coefficient system. If F=Q, the number of variables is three. Moreover, in this case, we construct the three variable p-adic family rho_{underline{lambda}} of Galois representations associated to underline…
We study kernel functions of L-functions and products of L-functions of Hilbert cusp forms over real quadratic fields. This extends the results on elliptic modualr forms by Diamantis and C. O'Sullivan. .
Let $K$ be a totally real field. In this article we present an asymptotic formula for the number of Hilbert modular cusp forms $f$ with given ramification at every place $v$ of $K$. When $v$ is an infinite place, this means specifying the weight of $f$ at $k$, and when $v$ is finite, this means specifying the restriction to inertia of the local Weil-Deligne representation attached to $f$ at $v$. Our formula shows that with essentially finitely many exceptions, the cusp forms of $K$ exhibit every possible sort of ramification behavior, thus generalizing a theorem of Khare and Prasad. From this …
In this note, we prove that there exists a classical Hilbert modular cusp form over Q(\sqrt{5}) of partial weight one which does not arise from the induction of a Grossencharacter from a CM extension of Q(\sqrt{5}).
We consider cuspidal representations in spaces of automorphic forms for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(I)$ of Hilbert modular groups for some number field $F$. To each such representation are associated the eigenvalue $λ_j$ of the Casimir operator at each real place $j$ of $F$, and the number $\ld_{\mathfrak p}$ parametrizing the eigenvalue of the Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak p^2}$ at each finite place $\mathfrak p$ outside the ideal $I$. We study the joint distribution of the $λ_j$ for all real places $j$, and the $\ld_{\mathfrak p}$ for finitely many $\mathfrak p$ outside $I$, over the cuspida…
The purpose of this paper is to show how a congruence between (the Fourier coefficients of) a Hilbert cusp form and a Hilbert Eisenstein series of parallel weight $2$ gives rise to congruences between algebraic parts of critical values of their $L$-functions. This is a generalization of a result of V. Vatsal.
Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $f$ be a classical cuspidal $p$-regular Hilbert modular eigenform over $F$ of parallel weight $1$. Let $x$ be the point on the $p$-adic Hilbert eigenvariety $\mathcal E$ corresponding to an ordinary $p$-stabilization of $f$. We show that if the $p$-adic Schanuel Conjecture is true, then $\mathcal E$ is smooth at $x$ if $f$ has CM. If we additionally assume that $F/\mathbb Q$ is Galois, we show that the weight map is étale at $x$ if $f$ has either CM or exotic projective image (which is the case for almost all cuspidal Hilbert modular eigenforms of…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the number of classical weight one specializations of a non-CM ordinary Hida family of parallel weight Hilbert cusp forms. It is known that a specialization of a primitive ordinary Hida family at any arithmetic points of weight at least two is a classical holomorphic Hilbert cusp form. However, this is not always the case for weight one specializations. Balasubramanyam, Ghate and Vatsal proved that such a Hida family admits infinitely many classical weight one specializations if and only if it is of CM type. We give an explicit upper bound on the num…
Let $\f$ be a primitive, cuspidal Hilbert modular form of parallel weight. We investigate the Rankin convolution $L$-values $L(\f,\g,s)$, where $\g$ is a theta-lift modular form corresponding to a finite-order character. We prove weak forms of Kato's `false Tate curve' congruences for these values, of the form predicted by conjectures in non-commmutative Iwasawa theory.
The purpose of this paper is to prove the equality between the algebraic Iwasawa $λ$-invariant and the analytic Iwasawa $λ$-invariant for a Hilbert cusp form of parallel weight $2$ at an ordinary prime $p$ when the associated residual Galois representation is reducible. This is a generalization of a result of R. Greenberg and V. Vatsal.

In this paper, we show that, on average, the derivatives of $L$-functions of cuspidal Hilbert modular forms with sufficiently large weight $k$ do not vanish on the line segments $\Im(s)=t_{0}$, $\Re(s)\in(\frac{k-1}{2},\frac{k}{2}-ε)\cup(\frac{k}{2}+ε,\frac{k+1}{2})$. This is analogous to the case of classical modular forms.
We prove an automorphic analogue of Deligne's conjecture for symmetric fourth $L$-functions of Hilbert modular forms. We extend the result of Morimoto based on generalization and refinement of the results of Grobner and Lin to cohomological irreducible essentially conjugate self-dual cuspidal automorphic representations of ${\rm GL}_2$ and ${\rm GL}_3$ over CM-fields.
Given a cuspidal Hilbert modular eigenform $π$ of parallel weight 2 and a nonarchimedian place $\mathfrak p$ of the underlying totally real field such that the local component of $π$ at $\mathfrak p$ is the Steinberg representation, one can associate two types of $\mathscr L$-invariants, one defined in terms of the cohomology of arithmetic groups and the other in terms of the Galois representation associated to $π$. We show that the $\mathscr L$-invariants are the same.
In this paper, we prove that for any totally real field $F$, weight $k$, and nebentypus character $χ$, the proportion of Hilbert cusp forms over $F$ of weight $k$ and character $χ$ with bounded field of rationality approaches zero as the level grows large. This answers, in the affirmative, a question of Serre. The proof has three main inputs: first, a lower bound on fields of rationality for admissible $GL_2$ representations; second, an explicit computation of the (fixed-central-character) Plancherel measure for $GL_2$; and third, a Plancherel equidsitribution theorem for cusp forms with fixed…
We construct Stickelberger elements for Hilbert modular cusp forms of parallel weight 2 and use recent results of Dasgupta and Spiess to bound their order of vanishing from below. As a special case the vanishing part of Mazur and Tate's refined "Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type"-conjecture for elliptic curves of rank 0 follows.
Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that, if a cuspidal overconvergent Hilbert cuspidal form has small slopes under $U_p$-operators, then it is classical. Our method follows the original cohomological approach of Coleman. The key ingredient of the proof is giving an explicit description of the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fiber of the Hilbert modular variety. A byproduct of the proof is to show that, at least when $p$ is inert, of the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus has the same image as the classical forms in the Grothendieck group of Hecke …
We generalize the work of Ohta on the congruence modules attached to elliptic Eisenstein series to the setting of Hilbert modular forms. Our work involves three parts. In the first part, we construct Eisenstein series adelically and compute their constant terms by computing local integrals. In the second part, we prove a control theorem for one-variable ordinary $Λ$-adic Hilbert modular forms following Hida's work on the space of multivariable ordinary $Λ$-adic Hilbert cusp forms. In part three, we compute congruence modules related to Hilbert Eisenstein series through an analog of Ohta's meth…
Andreatta-Iovita-Pilloni constructed eigenvarieties for cuspidal Hilbert modular forms. The eigenvariety has a natural map to the weight space, called the weight map. At a classical point, we compute a lower bound of the dimension of the tangent space of the fiber of the weight map using Galois deformation theory. Along with the classicality theorem due to Tian-Xiao, this enables us to characterize the classical points of the eigenvariety which are ramified over the weight space, in terms of the local splitting behavior of the associated Galois representation.
In this article, using methods from geometric analysis and theory of heat kernels, we derive qualitative estimates of automorphic cusp forms defined over quaternion algebras. Using which, we prove an average version of the holomorphic QUE conjecture. We then derive quantitative estimates of classical Hilbert modular cusp forms. This is a generalization of the results from [3] and [9] to higher dimensions.
In this paper, we prove the existence of certain lifts of Hilbert cusp forms to general odd spin groups. We then use those lifts to provide evidence for a conjecture of Gross on the modularity of abelian varieties not of ${\rm GL}_2$-type.
We prove arithmetic Riemann-Roch and Hilbert-Samuel type formulae for pointed stable curves. We give applications to volumes of lattices of integral cusps forms for pointed stable curves of genus 0.
We prove that all points of a toroidal compactification lying over 0-dimensional cusps are rationally equivalent in the integral Chow group for most classical modular varieties (Siegel, Hilbert, orthogonal, Hermitian, quaternionic). This gives a generalization, and even strengthening, of the Manin-Drinfeld theorem in higher dimension from the viewpoint of algebraic cycles. The same result no longer holds for Picard modular varieties, but for them we prove that the difference of any two "special" boundary points, which are dense in the boundary, is torsion.
We construct $p$-adic $L$-functions associated with $p$-refined cohomological cuspidal Hilbert modular forms over any totally real field under a mild hypothesis. Our construction is canonical, varies naturally in $p$-adic families, and does not require any small slope or non-criticality assumptions on the $p$-refinement. The main new ingredients are an adelic definition of a canonical map from overconvergent cohomology to a space of locally analytic distributions on the relevant Galois group and a smoothness theorem for certain eigenvarieties at critically refined points.
Let $\mathitΠ$ be a cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb F})$ with central character $ω_{\mathitΠ}$ over a totally real number field ${\mathbb F}$. In this paper, we prove the algebraicity of the near central non-critical value of the symmetric fourth $L$-function of $\mathitΠ$ twisted by $ω_{\mathitΠ}^{-2}$. The algebraicity is expressed in terms of the Petersson norm of the normalized newform of $\mathitΠ$ and the top degree Whittaker period of the Gelbart-Jacquet lift ${\rm Sym}^2\mathitΠ$ of $\mathitΠ$.
For a totally real number field $F$ and a nonarchimedean prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ lying above a prime number $p$ we introduce certain sheaf cohomology groups that intertwine the $\mathfrak{p}^{\infty}$-tower of a quaternionic Hilbert modular variety associated to a quaternion algebra $D$ over $F$ that is split at $\mathfrak{p}$ and a $p$-adically admissible representation of $\mbox{PGL}_2(F_{\mathfrak{p}})$. Applied to infinitesimal $p$-adic deformations of the local factor at $\mathfrak{p}$ of a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $D^*(\mathbb{A})$ this yields a natural construction…
In this paper we present an algorithm for computing Hecke eigensystems of Hilbert-Siegel cusp forms over real quadratic fields of narrow class number one. We give some illustrative examples using the quadratic field $\Q(\sqrt{5})$. In those examples, we identify Hilbert-Siegel eigenforms that are possible lifts from Hilbert eigenforms.
Given a Hilbert cuspidal newform $g$ we construct a family of modular forms of half-integral weight whose Fourier coefficients give the central values of the twisted $L$-series of $g$ by fundamental discriminants. The family is parametrized by quadratic conditions on the primes dividing the level of $g$, where each form has coefficients supported on the discriminants satisfying the conditions. These modular forms are given as generalized theta series and thus their coefficients can be effectively computed. Our construction works over arbitrary totally real number fields, except that in the cas…
We obtain an asymptotic formula for a weighted sum over cuspidal eigenvalues in a specific region, for $\SL_2$ over a totally real number field $F$, with discrete subgroup of Hecke type $Γ_0(I)$ for a non-zero ideal $I$ in the ring of integers of $F$. The weights are products of Fourier coefficients. This implies in particular the existence of infinitely many cuspidal automorphic representations with multi-eigenvalues in various regions growing to infinity. For instance, in the quadratic case, the regions include floating boxes, floating balls, sectors, slanted strips and products of prescribe…
The purpose of this semi-expository article is to give another proof of a classical theorem of Shimura on the critical values of the standard L-function attached to a Hilbert modular form. Our proof is along the lines of previous work of Harder and Hida (independently). What is different is an organizational principle based on the period relations proved by Raghuram and Shahidi for periods attached to regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations. The point of view taken in this article is that one need only prove an algebraicity theorem for the most interesting L-value, namely, the c…
