In this paper, we present an ambient backscatters-friendly 5G network that creates locations with large power (hot spots) for tags and good reception locations (quiet spots or coherent spots) for readers. The massive multiple input multiple output (M-MIMO) antenna and beamforming capability of the 5G network is used as follows. In a first step, a training device (separate from tags and readers) is used to send pilots and train the 5G network to perform focusing and/or nulling onto marked locations. In a second step, tags and readers are positioned onto the marked locations. The robustness of M-MIMO beamforming to slight changes in the environment is exploited. Our initial simulation results, in a multipath propagation channel environment, show that creating a hot spot on a tag improves the tag-reader range however with a low probability of detection. Creating a hot spot on a tag and a good reception spot on a reader at the same time, improves the tag-reader range with 99% probability of detection. The study also shows that beamforming does not degrade the performance of a legacy 5G communication.
Ambient backscatter, an emerging green communication technology, has aroused great interest from both academia and industry. One open problem for ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) systems is channel estimation for a massive-antenna reader. In this paper, we focus on channel estimation problem in AmBC systems with uniform linear array (ULA) at the reader which consists of large number of antennas. We first design a two-step method to jointly estimate channel gains and direction of arrivals (DoAs), and then refine the estimates through angular rotation. Additionally, Cramer-Rao lower boun…
We present a sensing system that determines soil moisture via RF using backscatter tags paired with a commodity ultra-wideband RF transceiver. Despite decades of research confirming the benefits, soil moisture sensors are still not widely adopted on working farms for three key reasons: the high cost of sensors, the difficulty of deploying and maintaining these sensors, and the lack of reliable internet access in rural areas. We seek to address these obstacles by designing a low-cost soil moisture sensing system that uses a hybrid approach of pairing completely wireless backscatter tags with a …

Recent years have witnessed the rapid proliferation of backscatter technologies that realize the ubiquitous and long-term connectivity to empower smart cities and smart homes. Localizing such backscatter tags is crucial for IoT-based smart applications. However, current backscatter localization systems require prior knowledge of the site, either a map or landmarks with known positions, which is laborious for deployment. To empower universal localization service, this paper presents Rover, an indoor localization system that localizes multiple backscatter tags without any start-up cost using a r…
Multiple-antenna backscatter is emerging as a promising approach to offer high communication performance for the data-intensive applications of ambient backscatter communications (AmBC). Although much has been understood about multiple-antenna backscatter in conventional backscatter communications (CoBC), existing analytical models cannot be directly applied to AmBC due to the structural differences in RF source and tag circuit designs. This paper takes the first step to fill the gap, by exploring the use of spatial modulation (SM) in AmBC whenever tags are equipped with multiple antennas. Spe…
For large-scale Internet of Things (IoT), backscatter communication is a promising technology to reduce power consumption and simplify deployment. However, backscatter communication lacks stability, along with limited communication range within a few meters. Due to the limited computation ability of backscatter tags, it is burdensome to effectively adapt the bitrate for the time-varying channel. Thus, backscatter tags are failed to fully utilize the optimal transmission rate. In this paper, we design a system named COOK with self-reliant bitrate adaptation in backscatter communication. Channel…
Ambient backscatter communication is an emerging and promising low-energy technology for the Internet of Things. In such a system, a tag sends a binary message to a reader by backscattering a radio frequency signal generated by an ambient source. The tag can operate without battery and without generating additional radio waves. However, the tag-to-reader link suffers from the source-to-reader interference. In this paper, we propose a polarization-based reconfigurable antenna in order to improve the robustness of the tag-to-reader link against the source-to-reader direct interference. More prec…
Bistatic backscatter communication (BackCom) allows passive tags to transmit over extended ranges, but at the cost of having carrier emitters either transmitting at high powers or being deployed very close to tags. In this paper, we examine how the presence of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) could benefit the bistatic BackCom system. We study the transmit power minimization problem at the carrier emitter, where its transmit beamforming vector is jointly optimized with the IRS phase shifts, whilst guaranteeing a required BackCom performance. A unique feature in this system setup is the …
Ambient backscatter communications have been introduced as low-power communications for green networking. This technology is very promising as it recycles ambient radio frequency waves, however such systems have limitations and suffer from poor performance due to their low-power. In this paper, we present and evaluate the performance of an ambient backscatter system equipped with a massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna at the reader side. A mobile device transmits a signal that is backscattered by a tag and received by the reader. Thanks to the spatial diversity of the massive …
Symbiotic radio (SR) is emerging as a spectrum- and energy-efficient communication paradigm for future passive Internet-of-things (IoT), where some single-antenna backscatter devices, referred to as Tags, are parasitic in an active primary transmission. The primary transceiver is designed to assist both direct-link (DL) and backscatter-link (BL) communication. In multi-tags SR systems, the transceiver designs become much more complicated due to the presence of DL and inter-Tag interference, which further poses new challenges to the availability and reliability of DL and BL transmission. To ove…

This work studies inference-based resource allocation in ultra low-power, large-scale backscatter sensor networks (BSNs). Several ultra-low cost and power sensor devices (tags) are illuminated by a carrier and reflect the measured information towards a wireless core that uses conventional Marconi radio technology. The development of multi-cell BSNs requires few multi-antenna cores and several low-cost scatter radio devices, targeting at maximum possible coverage. The average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) linear detectors i…
Sixth generation (6G) mobile networks may include new passive technologies, such as ambient backscatter communication or the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, to avoid the emission of waves and the corresponding energy consumption. On the one hand, a reconfigurable intelligent surface improves the network performance by adding electronically controlled reflected paths in the radio propagation channel. On the other hand, in an ambient backscatter system, a device, named tag, communicates towards a reader by backscattering the waves of an ambient source (such as a TV tower). However, t…
Due to extremely low power consumption, backscatter has become the transmission mechanism of choice for battery-free devices that operate on harvested energy. However, a limitation of recent backscatter systems is that the communication range scales with the strength of the ambient carrier signal(ACS). This means that to achieve a long range, a backscatter tag needs to reflect a strong ACS, which in practice means that it needs to be close to an ACS emitter. We present TunnelScatter, a mechanism that overcomes this limitation. TunnelScatter uses a tunnel diode-based radio frequency oscillator …
This paper proposes an ultrasonic backscatter communication (UsBC) system for passive implantable medical devices (IMDs) that can operate without batteries, enabling versatile revolutionary applications for future healthcare. The proposed UsBC system consists of a reader and a tag. The reader sends interrogation pulses to the tag. The tag backscatters the pulses based on the piezoelectric effect of a piezo transducer. We present several basic modulation schemes for UsBC by impedance matching of the piezo transducer. To mitigate the interference of other scatters in the human body, the tag tran…
Ambient Backscatter Communication (AmBC) is an emerging communication technology that can enable green Internet-of-Things deployments. The widespread acceptance of this paradigm is limited by low Signal-to-Interference-Plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) of the signal impinging on the receiver antenna due to the strong direct path interference and unknown ambient signal. The adverse impact of these two factors can be mitigated by using non-coherent multi-antenna receivers, which is known to require higher SINR to reach Bit-Error-Rate (BER) performance of coherent receivers. However, in literature, coheren…
Future Internet-of-Things (IoT) has high demand for energy-saving communications, especially in remote areas and smart cities. To meet this demand, we propose novel Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-assisted backscatter communications, where a UAV first collects data from multiple terrestrial backscattering tags via time division multiple access, and then flies into the coverage region of a terrestrial base station to upload its collected data to its associated base station. To determine the optimal UAV data collection location, we first analyze the system average outage probability, and then optimize t…
Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) leverages the existing ambient radio frequency (RF) environment to implement communication with battery-free devices. One critical challenge of AmBC systems is signal recovery because the transmitted information bits are embedded in the ambient RF signals and these are unknown and uncontrollable. To address this problem, most existing approaches use averaging-based energy detectors and consequently the data rate is low and there is an error floor. Here we propose a new detection strategy based on the ratio between signals received from a multiple-antenn…
We consider an ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) system aided by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). The optimization of the IRS to assist AmBC is extremely difficult when there is no prior channel knowledge, for which no design solutions are currently available. We utilize a deep reinforcement learning-based framework to jointly optimize the IRS and reader beamforming, with no knowledge of the channels or ambient signal. We show that the proposed framework can facilitate effective AmBC communication with a detection performance comparable to several benchmarks under full channel k…
Wireless powered backscatter communications (WPBC) is capable of implementing ultra-low-power communication, thus promising in the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. In practice, however, it is challenging to apply WPBC in large-scale IoT networks because of its short communication range. To address this challenge, this paper exploits an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to assist WPBC in large-scale IoT networks. In particular, we investigate the joint design of network planning and dynamic resource allocation of the access point (AP), tag reader, and UGV to minimize the total energy consumption.…
The bistatic backscatter architecture, with its extended range, enables flexible deployment opportunities for backscatter devices. In this paper, we study the placement of power beacons (PBs) in bistatic backscatter networks to maximize the guaranteed coverage distance (GCD), defined as the distance from the reader within which backscatter devices are able to satisfy a given quality-of-service constraint. This work departs from conventional energy source placement problems by considering the performance of the additional backscatter link on top of the energy transfer link. We adopt and optimiz…
This work considers identity attack on a radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based backscatter communication system. Specifically, we consider a single-reader, single-tag RFID system whereby the reader and the tag undergo two-way signaling which enables the reader to extract the tag ID in order to authenticate the legitimate tag (L-tag). We then consider a scenario whereby a malicious tag (M-tag)---having the same ID as the L-tag programmed in its memory by a wizard---attempts to deceive the reader by pretending to be the L-tag. To this end, we counter the identity attack by exploiting the n…
Cognitive backscattering, an integration of cognitive radio and backsatter modulation, is emerging as a potential candidate for green Internet of Things (IoT). In cognitive backscatter systems, the backscatter device (BD) shares not only the same spectrum, but also the same radio-frequency (RF) source with the legacy system. In this paper, we investigate the signal transmission problem, in which a basic transmission model is considered which consists of K RF sources, one BD and one reader equipped with M antennas. A non-cooperative scenario is considered, where there is no cooperation between …
Future intelligent systems will consist of a massive number of battery-less sensors, where quick and accurate aggregation of sensor data will be of paramount importance. Over-the-air computation (AirComp) is a promising technology wherein sensors concurrently transmit their measurements over the wireless channel, and a reader receives the noisy version of a function of measurements due to the superposition property. A key challenge in AirComp is the accurate power alignment of individual transmissions, addressed previously by using conventional precoding methods. In this paper, we investigate …

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) leverages the existing ambient radio frequency (RF) environment to implement communication with battery-free devices. The key challenge in the development of AmBC is the very weak RF signals backscattered by the AmBC Tag. To overcome this challenge, we propose the use of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) by incorporating multiple antennas at the Tag as well as at the Reader. Our approach considers both coherent and non-coherent OSTBC so that systems with and without channel state information can be considered. To allow the application of OSTBC, …
The probability density function (pdf) of the received signal of an ambient backscatter communication system is derived, assuming that on-off keying (OOK) is performed at the tag, and that the ambient radio frequency (RF) signal is white Gaussian. The pdf of the received signal is then utilized to design two different types of non-coherent detectors. The first detector directly uses the received signal to perform a hypothesis test. The second detector first estimates the channel based on the observed signal and then performs the hypothesis test. Test statistics and optimal decision threshold o…
WiFi backscatter tags can enable direct connectivity of IoT devices with commodity WiFi hardware at low power. However, most state of the art backscatter tag implementations in this area have limited transmitter to tag range, are not suitable to be deployed in a WiFi mesh network, and do not take full advantage of today's WiFi network capabilities such as MIMO. In this paper, we present BeamScatter, which can realize a backscatter tag based on MIMO techniques that can work at a very long separation of 28m from an access-point and enables their deployment in WiFi mesh networks. BeamScatter pres…

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and ambient backscatter communication have been envisioned as two promising technologies for the Internet-of-things due to their high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. Motivated by this fact, we consider an ambient backscatter NOMA system in the presence of a malicious eavesdropper. Under some realistic assumptions of residual hardware impairments (RHIs), channel estimation errors (CEEs) and imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC), we investigate the physical layer security (PLS) of the ambient backscatter NOMA systems focusing on r…
