We measure the relaxation time of a square lattice Ising ferromagnet that is quenched to zero-temperature from supercritical initial conditions. We reveal an anomalous and seemingly overlooked timescale associated with the relaxation to "frozen" two-stripe states. While close to a power law of the form $\sim L^ν$ , we argue this timescale actually grows as $\sim L^{2}\ln L$, with L the linear dimension of the system. We uncover the mechanism behind this scaling form by using a synthetic initial condition that replicates the late time ordering of two-stripe states, and subsequently explain it heuristically.
We present a comparative study of the fate of an Ising ferromagnet on the square lattice with periodic boundary conditions evolving under three different zero-temperature dynamics. The first one is Glauber dynamics, the two other dynamics correspond to two limits of the directed Ising model, defined by rules that break the full symmetry of the former, yet sharing the same Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution at stationarity. In one of these limits the directed Ising model is reversible, in the other one it is irreversible. For the kinetic Ising-Glauber model, several recent studies have demonstrated t…
We investigate the long-time properties of the Ising-Glauber model on a periodic cubic lattice after a quench to zero temperature. In contrast to the conventional picture from phase-ordering kinetics, we find: (i) Domains at long time are highly interpenetrating and topologically complex, with average genus growing algebraically with system size. (ii) The long-time state is almost never static, but rather contains "blinker" spins that can flip ad infinitum with no energy cost. (iii) The energy relaxation has a complex time dependence with multiple characteristic time scales, the longest of whi…
We study instantaneous quenches from infinite temperature to well below $T_c$ in the two-dimensional square lattice Ising antiferromagnet in the presence of a longitudinal external magnetic field. Under single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm Monte Carlo dynamics, this protocol produces a pair of magnetization plateaus that prevent the system from reaching the equilibrium ground state except for some special values of the field. We explain the plateaus in terms of local spin configurations that are stable under the dynamics.
We investigate the final state of zero-temperature Ising ferromagnets which are endowed with single-spin flip Glauber dynamics. Surprisingly, the ground state is generally not reached for zero initial magnetization. In two dimensions, the system either reaches a frozen stripe state with probability approximately equal to 1/3 or the ground state with probability approximately equal to 2/3. In greater than two dimensions, the probability to reach the ground state or a frozen state rapidly vanishes as the system size increases and the system wanders forever in an iso-energy set of metastable stat…
Using T=0 Monte Carlo and simulated annealing simulation, we study the energy relaxation of ferromagnetic Ising and Potts models on random graphs. In addition to the expected exponential decay to a zero energy ground state, a range of connectivities for which there is power law relaxation and freezing to a metastable state is found. For some connectivities this freezing persists even using simulated annealing to find the ground state. The freezing is caused by dynamic frustration in the graphs, and is a feature of the local search-nature of the Monte Carlo dynamics used. The implications of th…
We consider in parallel three one-dimensional spin models with kinetic constraints: the paramagnetic constrained Ising chain, the ferromagnetic Ising chain with constrained Glauber dynamics, and the same chain with constrained Kawasaki dynamics. At zero temperature the dynamics of these models is fully irreversible, leading to an exponentially large number of blocked states. Using a mapping of these spin systems onto sequential adsorption models of, respectively, monomers, dimers, and hollow trimers, we present exact results on the statistics of blocked states. We determine the distribution of…
We discuss quantum dynamics in the transverse field Ising model in two spatial dimensions. We show that, up to a prethermal timescale, which we quantify, the Hilbert space 'shatters' into dynamically disconnected subsectors. We identify this shattering as originating from the interplay of a $\mathrm{U}(1)$ conservation law and a one-form $\mathbb{Z}_2$ constraint. We show that the number of dynamically disconnected sectors is exponential in system volume, and includes a subspace exponential in system volume within which the dynamics is exactly localized, even in the absence of quenched disorde…
We consider the two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Ising model on a square lattice at the critical temperature $T_c$, under Monte-Carlo spin flip dynamics. The bulk magnetisation and the magnetisation of a tagged line in the 2D Ising model, and the bulk magnetisation and the magnetisation of a tagged plane in the 3D Ising model exhibit anomalous diffusion. Specifically, their mean-square displacement increases as power-laws in time, collectively denoted as $\sim t^c$, where $c$ is the anomalous exponent. We argue that the anomalous diffusion in all these quantities for the Ising model stems …
We explore the Casimir-Lifshitz free energy theory for surface freezing of methane gas hydrates near the freezing point of water. The theory enables us to explore different pathways, resulting in anomalous (stabilising) ice layers on methane hydrate surfaces via energy minimization. Notably, we will contrast the gas hydrate material properties, under which thin ice films can form in water vapor, with those required in the presence of liquid water. It is predicted that methane hydrates in water vapor near the freezing point of water nucleate ice films but not water films.
It is found that the zero field susceptibility chi of the Ising model on the Cayley tree exhibits unusually weak divergence at the critical point Tc. The susceptibility amplitude is found to diverge at Tc proportionally to the tree generation level n, while the behavior of chi is otherwise analytic in the vicinity of Tc, with the critical exponent gamma=0.
When a two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet is quenched from above the critical temperature to zero temperature, the system eventually converges to either a ground state (all spins aligned) or an infinitely long-lived metastable stripe state. By applying results from percolation theory, we analytically determine the probability to reach the stripe state as a function of the aspect ratio and the form of the boundary conditions. These predictions agree with simulation results. Our approach generally applies to coarsening dynamics of non-conserved scalar fields in two dimensions.
The statistical mechanics of a one-dimensional Ising model in thermal equilibrium is well-established, textbook material. Yet, when driven far from equilibrium by coupling two sectors to two baths at different temperatures, it exhibits remarkable phenomena, including an unexpected 'freezing by heating.' These phenomena are explored through systematic numerical simulations. Our study reveals complicated relaxation processes as well as a crossover between two very different steady-state regimes.
The spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain in a magnetic field displays a remarkable pseudo-transition whenever it is driven sufficiently close to a ground-state phase boundary between a classical ferrimagnetic phase and a highly degenerate frustrated phase. The pseudo-transition of the spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain relates to intense thermal excitations from a nondegenerate ferrimagnetic ground state to a highly degenerate manifold of excited states with a frustrated character, which are responsible for an anomalous behavior of thermodynamic quantities. Temperature dependences of entropy and specific he…
A dimer mean-field model for the Ising spin-glass is presented. Despite its simplicity it captures some of the essential features of the spin-glass physics. The distribution of the single-spin magnetization is determined from a self-consistent integral equation. By solving the self-consistency condition numerically, we find that there are two temperature scales characterizing the glass transition. At the first, higher temperature, the glass order parameter becomes non-vanishing, and at the second, freezing temperature, it saturates to its maximal value. The effect of magnetic field and the exi…
The mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice, which takes into account lattice vibrations of the spin-3/2 decorating magnetic ions at a quantum-mechanical level under the assumption of a perfect lattice rigidity of the spin-1/2 nodal magnetic ions, is examined via an exact mapping correspondence with the effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a square lattice. Although the considered magnetic structure is in principle unfrustrated due to bipartite nature of a decorated square lattice, the model under investigation may display anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelas…
Although the fully connected Ising model does not have a length scale, we show that its critical exponents can be found using finite size scaling with the scaling variable equal to N, the number of spins. We find that at the critical temperature of the infinite system the mean value and the most probable value of the magnetization scale differently with N, and the probability distribution of the magnetization is not a Gaussian, even for large N. Similar results inconsistent with the usual understanding of mean-field theory are found at the spinodal. We relate these results to the breakdown of …
The global phase diagram of wetting in the two-dimensional (2d) Ising model is obtained through exact calculation of the surface excess free energy. Besides a surface field for inducing wetting, a surface-coupling enhancement is included. The wetting transition is critical (second order) for any finite ratio of surface coupling J_s to bulk coupling J, and turns first order in the limit J_s/J to infinity. However, for J_s/J much larger than 1 the critical region is exponentially small and practically invisible to numerical studies. A distinct pre-asymptotic regime exists in which the transition…
I use recent advances in the study of the susceptibility of the Ising model to propose a new mechanism for the freezing transition which is observed in three dimensional hard spheres.
Following quenches from random initial configurations to zero temperature, we study aging during evolution of the ferromagnetic (nonconserved) Ising model towards equilibrium, via Monte Carlo simulations of very large systems, in space dimensions $d=2$ and $3$. Results for the two-time autocorrelations, obtained by using different acceptance probabilities for the spin-flip trial moves, are in agreement with each other. We demonstrate the scaling of this quantity with respect to $\ell/\ell_w$, where $\ell$ and $\ell_w$ are the average domain sizes at $t$ and $t_w$ $(\leqslant t)$, the observati…
We investigate the motion of a tagged spin in a ferromagnetic Ising chain evolving under Kawasaki dynamics. At equilibrium, the displacement is Gaussian, with a variance growing as $A t^{1/2}$. The temperature dependence of the prefactor $A$ is derived exactly. At low temperature, where the static correlation length $ξ$ is large, the mean square displacement grows as $(t/ξ^2)^{2/3}$ in the coarsening regime, i.e., as a finite fraction of the mean square domain length. The case of totally asymmetric dynamics, where $(+)$ (resp. $(-)$) spins move only to the right (resp. to the left), is also co…
The Ashkin-Teller (AT) model is a generalization of Ising 2-d to a four states spin model; it can be written in the form of two Ising layers (in general with different couplings) interacting via a four-spin interaction. It was conjectured long ago (by Kadanoff and Wegner, Wu and Lin, Baxter and others) that AT has in general two critical points, and that universality holds, in the sense that the critical exponents are the same as in the Ising model, except when the couplings of the two Ising layers are equal (isotropic case). We obtain an explicit expression for the specific heat from which we…
The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising model on a decorated planar lattice accounting for lattice vibrations of decorating atoms is treated by making use of the canonical coordinate transformation, the decoration-iteration transformation, and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective single-ion anisotropy and three-site four-spin interaction, which are responsible for the anomalous spin frustration of the decorating spins in virtue of a competition with the equilibrium nearest-neighbor exchange interaction between the nodal and decorating …
We experimentally demonstrate the phenomenon of dynamical many-body freezing in a periodically driven Ising chain. Theoretically [Phys. Rev. B 82, 172402 (2010)], for certain values of the drive parameters all fundamental degrees of freedom contributing to the response dynamics freeze for all time and for arbitrary initial states. Also, since the condition of freezing involves only the drive parameters and not on the quantization of the momentum (i.e., the system-size), our simulation with a small (3-spin) chain captures all salient features of the freezing phenomenon predicted for the infinit…
We establish that the Fourier modes of the magnetization serve as the dynamical eigenmodes for the two-dimensional Ising model at the critical temperature with local spin-exchange moves, i.e., Kawasaki dynamics. We obtain the dynamical scaling properties for these modes, and use them to calculate the time evolution of two dynamical quantities for the system, namely the autocorrelation function and the mean-square deviation of the line magnetizations. At intermediate times $1 \lesssim t \lesssim L^{z_c}$, where $z_c=4-η=15/4$ is the dynamical critical exponent of the model, we find that the lin…
The statistical mechanics of a two-state Ising spin-glass model with finite random connectivity, in which each site is connected to a finite number of other sites, is extended in this work within the replica technique to study the phase transitions in the three-state Ghatak-Sherrington (or random Blume-Capel) model of a spin glass with a crystal field term. The replica symmetry ansatz for the order function is expressed in terms of a two-dimensional effective-field distribution which is determined numerically by means of a population dynamics procedure. Phase diagrams are obtained exhibiting p…
The zero temperature quenching dynamics of the ferromagnetic Ising model on a densely connected small world network is studied where long range bonds are added randomly with a finite probability $p$. We find that in contrast to the sparsely connected networks and random graph, there is no freezing and an initial random configuration of the spins reaches the equilibrium configuration within a very few Monte Carlo time steps in the thermodynamic limit for any $p \ne 0$. The residual energy and the number of spins flipped at any time shows an exponential relaxation to equilibrium. The persistence…
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg two-leg ladder accounting for alternating Ising and Heisenberg inter-leg couplings in addition to the Ising intra-leg coupling is rigorously mapped onto to a mixed spin-(3/2,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the nodal Ising spins $S=3/2$ and the interstitial spin-1/2 Heisenberg dimers. The latter effective model with higher-order interactions between the nodal and interstitial spins is subsequently exactly solved within the transfer-matrix method. The model under investigation exhibits five different ground states: ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, superant…
We consider the zero temperature coarsening in the Ising model in two dimensions where the spins interact within the Moore neighbourhood. The Hamiltonian is given by $H = - \sum_{<i,j>}{S_iS_j} - κ\sum_{<i,j'>}{S_iS_{j'}}$ where the two terms are for the first neighbours and second neighbours respectively and $κ\geq 0$. The freezing phenomena, already noted in two dimensions for $κ=0$, is seen to be present for any $κ$. However, the frozen states show more complicated structure as $κ$ is increased; e.g. local anti-ferromagnetic motifs can exist for $κ>2$. Finite sized systems also show the exi…
Langer theory of metastability provides a description of the lifetime and properties of the metastable phase of the Ising model field-driven transition, describing the magnetic field-driven transition in ferromagnets and the chemical potential-driven transition of fluids. An immediate further step is to apply it to the study of a transition driven by the temperature, as the one underwent by the two-dimensional Potts model. For this model a study based on the analytical continuation of the free energy (Meunier, Morel 2000) predicts the anomalous vanishing of the metastable temperature range in …
Motivated by efforts to create thin nanoscale metamaterials and understand atomically thin binary monolayers, we study the finite temperature statistical mechanics of arrays of bistable buckled dilations embedded in free-standing two-dimensional crystalline membranes that are allowed to fluctuate in three dimensions. The buckled nodes behave like discrete, but highly compressible, Ising spins, leading to a phase transition at $T_c$ with singularities in the staggered "magnetization," susceptibility, and specific heat, studied via molecular dynamics simulations. Unlike conventional Ising models…
It is analytically shown that the one-dimensional Ising model with Glauber dynamics exhibits short time memory effects when submitted to an abrupt change in the temperature. These effects are qualitatively similar to those experimentally observed in the compaction of vibrated granular materials. Moreover, a critical time separating regimes of ``normal'' and ``anomalous'' responses to the perturbation is found.
The Ashkin-Teller model can be formulated as a pair of 2D Ising models, interacting via a four-spin interaction. I consider the case of weak anisotropy (slight a-symmetry between the two Ising layers) and weak coupling. I show that the system admits two critical temperatures whose difference varies continuously with the strength of the coupling, scaling with an anomalous exponent as one let the a-symmetry parameter go to zero. The specific heat diverges logarithmically at the critical points (as for Ising) but the constant in front of the logarithm is renormalized by an anomalous critical expo…
We study the time-dependent circuit complexity of the periodically driven transverse field Ising model using Nielsen's geometric approach. In the high-frequency driving limit the system is known to exhibit non-equilibrium phase transitions governed by the amplitude of the driving field. We analytically compute the complexity in this regime and show that it clearly distinguishes between the different phases, exhibiting a universal linear behavior at early times. We also evaluate the time averaged complexity, provide evidence of non-analytic behavior at the critical points, and discuss its origi…
We study an unconventional two-dimensional, two-component classical plasma on a sphere, with emphasis on detecting signatures of melting transitions. This system is relevant to Ising-type quantum Hall states, and is unconventional in the sense that it features particles interacting via two different two-dimensional Coulomb interactions. One species of particles in the plasma carries charge of both types (Q_1,Q_2), while the other species carries only charge of the second type (0,-Q_2). We find signatures of a freezing transition at Q_1^2 approximately 140. This means that the species with char…
The interplay between geometric frustration (GF) and bond disorder is studied in the Ising kagome lattice within a cluster approach. The model considers antiferromagnetic (AF) short-range couplings and long-range intercluster disordered interactions. The replica formalism is used to obtain an effective single cluster model from where the thermodynamics is analyzed by exact diagonalization. We found that the presence of GF can introduce cluster freezing at very low levels of disorder. The system exhibits an entropy plateau followed by a large entropy drop close to the freezing temperature. In t…
Chaos is an important characterization of classical dynamical systems. How is chaos linked to the long-time dynamics of collective modes across phases and phase transitions? We address this by studying chaos across Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in classical XXZ model. We show that spatio-temporal chaotic properties have crossovers across the transitions and distinct temperature dependence in the high and low-temperature phases which show normal and anomalous diffusions, respectively. Our results also provide new insights into the dynamics of interacting quantum systems in the semic…
A three-dimensional layered Ising-Antiferromagnet with a ferromagnetic intra-layer coupling to z neighbors, zJ > 0, and an antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling to z' neighbors, z'J' < 0, is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations on a hexagonal lattice. The physical nature of the anomalous temperature bahavior of the sublattice magnetizations, which is found for certain values of r=zJ/z'J' and z' in magnetic fields is explained in terms of successive phase transitions. They take place on the ferromagnetic 2-dimensional spin-down sublattice at T = T_c^{2d}, smeared by a finite stabilizing mole…
Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the width of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg ladder described by $\cH= J_\rl \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [ \vS_{j,a} \cdot \vS_{j+1,a} + \vS_{j,b} \cdot \vS_{j+1,b} ] + J_\rr \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [λ(S^x_{j,a} S^x_{j,b} + S^y_{j,a} S^y_{j,b}) + S^z_{j,a} S^z_{j,b}] $, where $S^α_{j,a(b)}$ denotes the $α$-component of the spin-1/2 operator at the $j$-th site of the $a (b)$ chain. We mainly focus on the $J_\rr \gg J_\rl > 0$ and $|λ| \ll 1$ case. The width of the spin gap as a function of $λ$ anomalously increases near $λ= 0$; for instance, for $-0.1 < λ< 0.1$ w…
We investigate the zero-temperature glassy transitions in the square-lattice +- J Ising model, with bond distribution $P(J_{xy}) = p δ(J_{xy} - J) + (1-p) δ(J_{xy} + J)$; p=1 and p=1/2 correspond to the pure Ising model and to the Ising spin glass with symmetric bimodal distribution, respectively. We present finite-temperature Monte Carlo simulations at p=4/5, which is close to the low-temperature paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition line located at p=0.89, and at p=1/2. Their comparison provides a strong evidence that the glassy critical behavior that occurs for $1-p_0<p<p_0$, $p_0=0.897$, i…
We perform large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations of SLAC fermions on a two-dimensional square lattice at half filling with a single Dirac cone with $N=2$ spinor components and repulsive on-site interactions. Despite the presence of a sign problem, we accurately identify the critical interaction strength $U_c = 7.28 \pm 0.02$ in units of the hopping amplitude, for a continuous quantum phase transition between a paramagnetic Dirac semimetal and a ferromagnetic insulator. Using finite-size scaling, we extract the critical exponents for the corresponding $N=2$ chiral Ising Gross-Neveu univer…
We investigate two separate notions of dynamical phase transitions in the two-dimensional nearest-neighbor transverse-field Ising model on a square lattice using matrix product states and a new \textit{hybrid} infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm, where the model is implemented on an infinitely long cylinder with a finite diameter along which periodic boundary conditions are employed. Starting in an ordered initial state, our numerical results suggest that quenches below the dynamical critical point give rise to a ferromagnetic long-time steady state with the Loschmidt return rate…
We present a random-interface representation of the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model based on thermal fluctuations of a uniquely defined geometric spin cluster in the 3D model and its 2D cross section. Extensive simulations have been carried out to measure the global interfacial width as a function of temperature for different lattice sizes which is shown to signal the criticality of the model at $T_c$ by forming a size-independent cusp in 3D, along with an emergent super-roughening at its 2D cross section. We find that the super-rough state is accompanied by an intrinsic anomalous scaling b…
With Monte Carlo methods, we investigate the relaxation dynamics of a domain wall in the two-dimensional random-field Ising model with a driving field. The short-time dynamic behavior at the depinning transition is carefully examined, and the roughening process of the domain wall is observed. Based on the short-time dynamic scaling form, we accurately determine the transition field, static and dynamic exponents, and local and global roughness exponents. In contrast to the usual assumption, the results indicate that the domain interface does not belong to the universality class of the Edwards-W…
Previously, we demonstrated that the dynamics of kicked spin chains possess a remarkable duality property. The trace of the unitary evolution operator for $N$ spins at time $T$ is related to one of a non-unitary evolution operator for $T$ spins at time $N$. Using this duality relation we obtain the oscillating part of the density of states for a large number of spins. Furthermore, the duality relation explains the anomalous short-time behavior of the spectral form factor previously observed in the literature.
We introduce a model, in which a particle performs a continuous time random walk (CTRW) coupled to an environment with Ising dynamics. The particle shows locally varying diffusivity determined by the geometrical properties of the underlying Ising environment, that is, the diffusivity depends on the size of the connected area of spins pointing in the same direction. The model shows anomalous diffusion when the Ising environment is at critical temperature. We show that any finite scale introduced by a temperature different from the critical one, or a finite size of the environment, cause subdiff…
We describe the behavior of an Ising model with orthogonal dynamics, where changes in energy and changes in alignment never occur during the same Monte Carlo (MC) step. This orthogonal Ising model (OIM) allows conservation of energy and conservation of momentum to proceed independently, on their own preferred time scales. MC simulations of the OIM mimic more than twenty distinctive characteristics that are commonly found above and below the glass temperature, Tg. Examples include a specific heat that has hysteresis around Tg, out-of-phase loss that exhibits primary and secondary peaks, super-A…
