We show that any isometric immersion of a flat plane domain into $\mathbb R^3$ is developable provided it enjoys the little Hölder regulairty $c^{1,2/3}$. In particular, isometric immersions of local $C^{1,α}$ regularity with $α> 2/3$ belong to this class. The proof is based on the existence of a weak notion of second fundamental form for such immersions, the analysis of the Gauss-Codazzi-Mainardi equations in this weak setting, and a parallel result on the very weak solutions to the degenerate Monge-Ampère equation analyzed by Lewicka and the second author.
We introduce an elliptic regularization of the PDE system representing the isometric immersion of a surface in $\mathbb R^{3}$. The regularization is geometric, and has a natural variational interpretation.
We prove uniqueness of smooth isometric immersions within the class of negatively curved corrugated two-dimensional immersions embedded into $\mathbb{R}^3$. The main tool we use is the relative entropy method employed in the setting of differential geometry for the Gauss-Codazzi system. The result allows us to compare also two solutions to the Gauss-Codazzi system that correspond to a smooth and a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion of not necessarily the same metric and prove continuous dependence of their second fundamental forms in terms of the metric and initial data in $L^2$.
The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. When the Gauss curvature is negative, the isometric immersion problem is considered in this paper through the Gauss-Codazzi system for the second fundamental forms. It is shown that if the Gauss curvature satisfies an integrability condition, the surface has a global smooth isometric immersion in the three-dimensional Euclidean space even if the Gauss curvature decays very slowly at infinity. The new idea of the proof is based o…
In this paper the method of compensated compactness is applied to the problem of isometric immersion of a two dimensional Riemannian manifold with negative Gauss curvature into three dimensional Euclidean space. Previous applications of the method to this problem have required decay of order $t^{-4}$ in the Gauss curvature. Here we show that the decay of Hong $t^{-2-δ/2}$ where $δ\in(0,4)$ suffices.
We prove the developability and $C^{1,1/2}$ regularity of $W^{2,2}$ isometric immersions of $n$-dimensional domains into $R^{n+1}$. As a conclusion we show that any such Sobolev isometry can be approximated by smooth isometries in the $W^{2,2}$ strong norm, provided the domain is $C^1$ and convex. Both results fail to be true if the Sobolev regularity is weaker than $W^{2,2}$.
A fundamental problem in differential geometry is to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold ${\mathcal M}^2$ which can be realized as isometric immersions into $\R^3$. This problem can be formulated as initial and/or boundary value problems for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic type whose mathematical theory is largely incomplete. In this paper, we develop a general approach, which combines a fluid dynamic formulation of balance laws for the Gauss-Codazzi system with a compensated compactness framework, to deal wi…
We prove the existence of $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersions of several classes of metrics on surfaces $(\mathcal{M},g)$ into the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the metrics $g$ have strictly negative curvature. These include the standard hyperbolic plane, generalised helicoid-type metrics and generalised Enneper metrics. Our proof is based on the method of compensated compactness and invariant regions in hyperbolic conservation laws, together with several observations on the geometric quantities (Gauss curvature, metric components etc.) of negatively curved surfaces.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for isometric immersions. More precisely, given a smooth isometric immersion of a codimension one submanifold we construct $C^{1,α}$ isometric extensions for any $α<\frac{1}{n(n+1)+1}$ via the method of convex integration.
We prove that if $n$ is even, $(M,g)$ is a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold whose Pfaffian form is a positive multiple of the volume form, and $y\in C^{1,α}(M;\mathbb{R}^{n+1})$ is an isometric immersion with $n/(n+1)< α\leq 1$, then $y(M)$ is a surface of bounded extrinsic curvature. This is proved by showing that extrinsic curvature, defined by a suitable pull-back of the volume form on the $n$-sphere via the Gauss map, is identical to intrinsic curvature, defined by the Pfaffian form. This latter fact is stated in form of an integral identity for the Brouwer degree of the Gauss m…
Motivated by the quasi-local mass problem in general relativity, we study the rigidity of isometric immersions with the same mean curvature into a warped product space. As a corollary of our main result, two star-shaped hypersurfaces in a spatial Schwarzschild or AdS-Schwarzschild manifold with nonzero mass differ only by a rotation if they are isometric and have the same mean curvature. We also give similar results if the mean curvature condition is replaced by an $σ_2$-curvature condition.
We present a compensated compactness theorem in Banach spaces established recently, whose formulation is originally motivated by the weak rigidity problem for isometric immersions of manifolds with lower regularity. As a corollary, a geometrically intrinsic div-curl lemma for tensor fields on Riemannian manifolds is obtained. Then we show how this intrinsic div-curl lemma can be employed to establish the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations, the Cartan formalism, and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian submanifolds.
The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces with negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space is studied in this paper. The global weak solutions to the Gauss-Codazzi equations with large data in $L^\infty$ are obtained through the vanishing viscosity method and the compensated compactness framework. The $L^\infty$ uniform estimate and $H^{-1}$ compactness are established through a transformation of state variables and construction of proper invariant regions for two types of given metrics including the catenoid type and the helicoid type.…

The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with negative Gauss curvature into the three-dimensional Euclidean space is considered through the Gauss-Codazzi equations for the first and second fundamental forms. The large $L^\infty$ solution is obtained which leads to a $C^{1,1}$ isometric immersion. The approximate solutions are constructed by the the Lax-Friedrichs finite-difference scheme with the fractional step. The uniform estimate is established by studying the equations satisfied by the Riemann invariants and using the sign of the nonlinear part. The $H^{-1}$ compactn…
We prove the $C^{1}$ regularity and developability of $W^{2,p}$ isometric immersions of $n$-dimensional flat domains into ${\mathbb R}^{n+k}$ where $p\ge \min\{2k, n\}$. Another parallel consequence of our methods is a similar regularity and rigidity result for the $W^{2,n}$ solutions of the degenerate Monge-Ampère equations in $n$ dimensions. The analysis also applies to the situations when the degeneracy is extended to $(k+1)\times (k+1)$ minors of the Hessian matrix and the solution is $W^{2,p}$, with $p\ge \min\{2k, n\}$.
We are concerned with the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci (GCR) equations on Riemannian manifolds and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian manifolds into the Euclidean spaces. We develop a unified intrinsic approach to establish the global weak rigidity of both the GCR equations and isometric immersions of the Riemannian manifolds, independent of the local coordinates, and provide further insights of the previous local results and arguments. The critical case has also been analyzed. To achieve this, we first reformulate the GCR equations with div-curl structure …
In this paper, we study the question if there is an isometric immersion of the cigar soliton into $R^3$. We show that the answer is negative. Similar result in higher dimensions is also true for steady Bryant solitons.
We prove that, given a $C^2$ Riemannian metric $g$ on the $2$-dimensional disk $D_2$, any short $C^1$ immersion of $(D_2,g)$ into $\mathbb R^3$ can be uniformly approximated with $C^{1,α}$ isometric immersions for any $α< \frac{1}{5}$. This statement improves previous results by Yu.F. Borisov and of a joint paper of the first and third author with S. Conti.
We study isometric embeddings of $C^2$ Riemannian manifolds in the Euclidean space and we establish that the Hölder space $C^{1,\frac{1}{2}}$ is critical in a suitable sense: in particular we prove that for $α> \frac{1}{2}$ the Levi-Civita connection of any isometric immersion is induced by the Euclidean connection, whereas for any $α< \frac{1}{2}$ we construct $C^{1,α}$ isometric embeddings of portions of the standard $2$-dimensional sphere for which such property fails.
Let $(M^n,g_0)$ and $(\bar{M}^{n+1},\bar{g})$ be complete Riemannian manifolds with $|\bar{\nabla}^k\bar{Rm}|\le \bar{C}$ for $k \le 2$, and suppose there is an isometric immersion $F_0: M^n \rightarrow \bar{M}^{n+1}$ with bounded second fundamental form. Let $F_t: M^n \rightarrow \bar{M}^{n+1}$ ($t\in [0,T]$) be a family of immersions evolving by mean curvature flow with initial data $F_0$ and with uniformly bounded second fundamental forms. We show that the supremum and infimum of the normal curvature of the immersions $F_t$ vary at a bounded rate. This is an analogue of a result of Rong and…
We associate a natural $λ$-family ($λ\in \R \setminus \{0\} $) of flat Lagrangian immersions in $\C^n$ with non-degenerate normal bundle to any given one. We prove that the structure equations for such immersions admit the same Lax pair as the first order integrable system associated to the symmetric space $\frac{\U(n) \ltimes \C^n}{\OO(n) \ltimes \R^n}$. An interesting observation is that the family degenerates to an Egoroff net on $\R^n$ when $λ\to 0$. We construct an action of a rational loop group on such immersions by identifying its generators and computing their dressing actions. The ac…
The isometric embedding problem is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. A longstanding problem is considered in this paper to characterize intrinsic metrics on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold which can be realized as isometric immersions into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. A remarkable connection between gas dynamics and differential geometry is discussed. It is shown how the fluid dynamics can be used to formulate a geometry problem. The equations of gas dynamics are first reviewed. Then the formulation using the fluid dynamic variables in conservation laws of gas dyn…
We study the weak continuity of two interrelated non-linear partial differential equations, the Yang-Mills equations and the Gauß-Codazzi-Ricci equations, involving $L^p$-integrable connections. Our key finding is that underlying cancellations in the curvature form, especially the div-curl structure inherent in both equations, are sufficient to pass to the limit in the non-linear terms. We first establish the weak continuity of Yang-Mills equations and prove that any weakly converging sequence of weak Yang-Mills connections in $L^p$ converges to a weak Yang-Mills connection. We then prove that…
