Two fractional two-phase Stefan-like problems are considered by using Riemann-Liouville and Caputo derivatives of order $α\in (0, 1)$ verifying that they coincide with the same classical Stefan problem at the limit case when $α=1$. For both problems, explicit solutions in terms of the Wright functions are presented. Even though the similarity of the two solutions, a proof that they are different is also given. The convergence when $α\nearrow 1$ of the one and the other solutions to the same classical solution is given. Numerical examples for the dimensionless version of the problem are also presented and analyzed.
In this paper we obtain self-similarity solutions for a one-phase one-dimensional fractional space one-phase Stefan problem in terms of the three parametric Mittag-Leffer function $E_{α,m;l}(z)$. We consider Dirichlet and Newmann conditions at the fixed face, involving Caputo fractional space derivatives of order $0 < α< 1$. We recover the solution for the classical one-phase Stefan problem when the order of the Caputo derivatives approaches one.
We study a space-fractional Stefan problem, where the non-local diffusion flux is modeled by the Caputo derivative. We obtain the unique existence of classical solution to this problem.
Two fractional Stefan problems are considered by using Riemann-Liouville and Caputo derivatives of order $α\in (0,1)$ such that in the limit case ($α=1$) both problems coincide with the same classical Stefan problem. For the one and the other problem, explicit solutions in terms of the Wright functions are presented. We prove that these solutions are different even though they converge, when $α\nearrow 1$, to the same classical solution. This result also shows that some limits are not commutative when fractional derivatives are used.
We obtain a generalized Neumann solution for the two-phase fractional Lamé-Clapeyron-Stefan problem for a semi-infinite material with constant boundary and initial conditions. In this problem, the two governing equations and a governing condition for the free boundary include a fractional time derivative in the Caputo sense of order $0<\al\leq 1$. When $ \al \nearrow $ 1 we recover the classical Neumann solution for the two-phase Lamé-Clapeyron-Stefan problem given through the error function.
Two Stefan's problems for the diffusion fractional equation are solved, where the fractional derivative of order $ \al \in (0,1) $ is taken in the Caputo's sense. The first one has a constant condition on $ x = 0 $ and the second presents a flux condition $ T_x (0, t) = \frac {q} {t ^ {\al/2}} $. An equivalence between these problems is proved and the convergence to the classical solutions is analysed when $ \al \nearrow $ 1 recovering the heat equation with its respective Stefan's condition.
A fractional Stefan problem with a boundary convective condition is solved, where the fractional derivative of order $ α\in (0,1) $ is taken in the Caputo sense. Then an equivalence with other two fractional Stefan problems (the first one with a constant condition on $ x = 0 $ and the second with a flux condition)is proved and the convergence to the classical solutions is analyzed when $ α\nearrow 1$ recovering the heat equation with its respective Stefan condition.
We derive the fractional version of one-phase one-dimensional Stefan model. We assume that the diffusive flux is given by the time-fractional Riemann-Liouville derivative, i.e. we impose the memory effect in the examined model. Furthermore, we find a special solution to this problem.
Taking into account the recent works \cite{RoTaVe:2020} and \cite{Rys:2020}, we consider a phase-change problem for a one dimensional material with a non-local flux, expressed in terms of the Caputo derivative, which derives in a space-fractional Stefan problem. We prove existence of a unique solution to a phase-change problem with the fractional Neumann boundary condition at the fixed face $x=0$, where the domain, at the initial time, consists of liquid and solid. Then we use this result to prove the existence of a limit solution to an analogous problem with solid initial domain, when it is n…
We review some fractional free boundary problems that were recently considered for modeling anomalous phase-transitions. All problems are of Stefan type and involve fractional derivatives in time according to Caputo's definition. We survey the assumptions from which they are obtained and observe that the problems are nonequivalent though all of them reduce to a classical Stefan problem when the order of the fractional derivatives is replaced by one. We further show that a simple heuristic approach built upon a fractional version of the energy balance and the classical Fourier's law leads to a …
We obtain explicit expressions for one unknown thermal coefficient (among the conductivity, mass density, specific heat and latent heat of fusion) of a semi-infinite material through the one-phase fractional Lamé-Clapeyron-Stefan problem with an over-specified boundary condition on the fixed face $x=0$. The partial differential equation and one of the conditions on the free boundary include a time Caputo's fractional derivative of order $α\in (0,1) $. Moreover, we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions on data in order to have a unique solution by using recent results obtained for the …
This paper deals with the existence and uniqueness of solution for a coupled system of Hilfer fractional Langevin equation with non local integral boundary value conditions. The novelty of this work is that it is more general than the works based on the derivative of Caputo and Riemann-Liouville, because when $β=0$ we find the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative and when $β=1$ we find the Caputo fractional derivative. Initially, we give some definitions and notions that will be used throughout the work, after that we will establish the existence and uniqueness results by employing the fixe…
In this article we investigate the existence and regularity of 1-d steady state fractional order diffusion equations. Two models are investigated:the Riemann-Liouville fractional diffusion equation, and the Riemann-Liouville-Caputo fractional diffusion equation. For these models we explicitly show how the regularity of the solution depends upon the right hand side (rhs) function. We also establish for which Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions the models are well posed.
This paper deals with a theoretical mathematical analysis of a one-dimensional-moving-boundary problem for the time-fractional diffusion equation, where the time-fractional derivative of order $\al$ $\in (0,1)$ is taken in the Caputo's sense. A generalization of the Hopf's lemma is proved, and then this result is used to prove a monotonicity property for the free-boundary when a fractional free-boundary Stefan problem is considered.
The time-fractional diffusion equation is considered, where the time derivative is either of Caputo or Riemann-Liouville type. The solution of a general initial-boundary value problem with time-dependent boundary conditions over bounded and unbounded domains is derived using the embedding method. The solution of the initial-boundary value problem, expressed in terms of a two-parameter auxiliary function, is used to obtain analytical solutions of moving boundary problems. In particular, a 'fractional' analogue of the Neumann solution to a classical Stefan problem for melting ice is found.
A generalized Neumann solution for the two-phase fractional Lamé--Clapeyron--Stefan problem for a semi--infinite material with constant initial temperature and a particular heat flux condition at the fixed face is obtained, when a restriction on data is satisfied. The fractional derivative in the Caputo sense of order $\al \in (0,1)$ respect on the temporal variable is considered in two governing heat equations and in one of the conditions for the free boundary. Furthermore, we find a relationship between this fractional free boundary problem and another one with a constant temperature conditi…
In this paper we establish some convergence results for Riemann-Liouville, Caputo, and Caputo-Fabrizio fractional operators when the order of differentiation approaches one. We consider some errors given by $\left|\left| D^{1-\al}f -f'\right|\right|_p$ for p=1 and $p=\infty$ and we prove that for both Caputo and Caputo Fabrizio operators the order of convergence is a positive real r, 0<r<1. Finally, we compare the speed of convergence between Caputo and Caputo-Fabrizio operators obtaining that they a related by the Digamma function.
A mathematical model for a one-phase change problem (particularly a Stefan problem) with a memory flux, is obtained. The hypothesis that the weighted sum of fluxes back in time is proportional to the gradient of temperature is considered. The model obtained involves fractional derivatives with respect on time in the sense of Caputo and in the sense of Riemann--Liouville. An integral relationship for the free boundary which is equivalent to the `fractional Stefan condition' is also obtained.
The paper investigates the initial problem for a linear system of ordinary differential equations with the fractional differentiation operator Dzhrbashyan -- Nersesyan with constant coefficients. The existence and uniqueness theorems of the solution of the boundary value problem under study are proved. The solution is constructed explicitly in terms of the Mittag-Leffler function of the matrix argument. The Dzhrbashyan -- Nersesyan operator is a generalization of the Riemann -- Liouville, Caputo and Miller-Ross fractional differentiation operators. The obtained results as special cases contain…
While it is known that one can consider the Cauchy problem for evolution equations with Caputo derivatives, the situation for the initial value problems for the Riemann-Liouville derivatives is less understood. In this paper we propose new type initial, inner and inner-boundary value problems for fractional differential equations with the Riemann-Liouville derivatives. The results on the existence and uniqueness are proved, and conditions on the solvability are found. The well-posedness of the new type initial, inner and inner-boundary conditions are also discussed. Moreover, we give explicit …
We extend in this paper the definition of Caputo derivatives of order in $(0,1)$ to a certain class of locally integrable functions using a convolution group. Our strategy is to define a fractional calculus for a certain class of distributions using the convolution group. When acting on causal functions, this fractional calculus agrees with the traditional Riemann-Liouville definition for $t>0$ but includes some singularities at $t=0$ so that the group property holds. Then, making use of this fractional calculus, we introduce the generalized definition of Caputo derivatives. The new definition…
The backward problem for subdiffusion equation with the fractional Riemann-Liouville time-derivative of order ? 2 (0; 1) and an arbitrary positive self-adjoint operator A is considered. This problem is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard due to the lack of stability of the solution. Nevertheless, we will show that if we consider sufficiently smooth current information, then the solution exists and it is unique. Using this result, we study the inverse problem of initial value identification for subdiffusion equation. The results obtained differ significantly from the corresponding results for th…

This manuscript is dedicated to prove a new inequality that involves an important case of Leibniz rule regarding Riemann-Liouville and Caputo fractional derivatives of order $α\in(0,1)$. In the context of partial differential equations, the aforesaid inequality allows us to address the Faedo-Galerkin method to study several kinds of partial differential equations with fractional derivative in the time variable; particularly, we apply these ideas to prove the existence and uniqueness of solution to the fractional version of the 2D Stokes equations in bounded domains.
For fractional derivatives and time-fractional differential equations, we construct a framework on the basis of the operator theory in fractional Sobolev spaces. Our framework provides a feasible extension of the classical Caputo and the Riemann-Liouville derivatives within Sobolev spaces of fractional orders including negative ones. Our approach enables a unified treatment for fractional calculus and time-fractional differential equations. We formulate initial value problems for fractional ordinary differential equations and initial boundary value problems for fractional partial differential …
Fractional Dzherbashian-Nersesian operator is considered and three famous fractional order derivatives namely Riemann-Liouville, Caputo and Hilfer derivatives are shown to be special cases of the earlier one. The expression for Laplace transform of fractional Dzherbashian-Nersesian operator is constructed. Inverse problems of recovering space dependent and time dependent source terms of a time fractional diffusion equation with involution and involving fractional Dzherbashian-Nersesian operator are considered. The results on existence and uniqueness for the solutions of inverse problems are es…
We study the uncoupled space-time fractional operators involving time-dependent coefficients and formulate the corresponding inverse problems. Our goal is to determine the variable coefficients from the exterior partial measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We exploit the integration by parts formula for Riemann-Liouville and Caputo derivatives to derive the Runge approximation property for our space-time fractional operator based on the unique continuation property of the fractional Laplacian. This enables us to extend early unique determination results for space-fractional but time-l…
The abstract Cauchy problem for the distributed order fractional evolution equation in the Caputo and in the Riemann-Liouville sense is studied for operators generating a strongly continuous one-parameter semigroup on a Banach space. Continuous as well as discrete distribution of fractional time-derivatives of order less than one are considered. The problem is reformulated as an abstract Volterra integral equation. It is proven that its kernel satisfy certain complete monotonicity properties. Based on these properties, the well-posedness of the problem is established and a series expansion of …
An initial-boundary value problem for a time-fractional subdiffusion equation with the Riemann-Liouville derivatives on N-dimensional torus is considered. The uniqueness and existence of the classical solution of the posed problem are proved by the classical Fourier method. Sufficient conditions for the initial function and for the right-hand side of the equation are indicated, under which the corresponding Fourier series converges absolutely and uniformly. It should be noted, that the condition on the initial function found in this paper is less restrictive than the analogous condition in the…
The time-fractional diffusion-wave equation is revisited, where the time derivative is of order $2 ν$ and $0 < ν\le 1$. The behaviour of the equation is "diffusion-like" (respectively, "wave-like") when $0 < ν\le \frac{1}{2}$ (respectively, $\frac{1}{2} < ν\le 1$). Two types of time-fractional derivatives are considered, namely the Caputo and Riemann-Liouville derivatives. Initial value problems and initial-boundary value problems are investigated and handled in a unified way using an embedding method. A two-parameter auxiliary function is introduced and its properties are investigated. The ti…
As it is known various dynamical processes can be modeled through the systems of time-fractional order pseudo-differential equations. In the modeling process one frequently faces with determining the adequate orders of time-fractional derivatives in the sense of Riemann-Liouville or Caputo. This problem is qualified as an inverse problem. The right (vector) order can be found utilizing the available data. In this paper we consider this inverse problem for linear systems of fractional order pseudo-differential equations. We prove that the Fourier transform of the vector-solution $\widehat{U}(t,…
This article is in continuation of our earlier article [37] in which computational solution of an unified reaction-diffusion equation of distributed order associated with Caputo derivatives as the time-derivative and Riesz-Feller derivative as space derivative is derived. In this article, we present computational solutions of distributed order fractional reaction-diffusion equations associated with Riemann-Liouville derivatives of fractional orders as the time-derivatives and Riesz-Feller fractional derivatives as the space derivatives. The method followed in deriving the solution is that of j…
