This paper investigates the system spectral efficiency (SE) in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems, where RIS can reconfigure the propagation environment via a large number of controllable and intelligent phase shifters. In order to explore the system SE performance behavior with user proportional fairness for such a system, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the SE by jointly considering the power allocation at the base station (BS) and phase shift at the RIS, under nonlinear proportional rate fairness constraints. To solve the nonconvex optimization problem, an effective solution is developed, which capitalizes on an iterative algorithm with closed-form expressions, i.e., alternatively optimizing the transmit power at the BS and the reflecting phase shift at the RIS. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and assess the performance of the proposed alternative algorithm.
We consider a multi-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) communications system which is assisted by a hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Unlike conventional passive RISs, hybrid RIS is equipped with a few active elements with the ability to reflect and amplify incident signals to significantly improve the system performance. Towards a fairness-oriented design, we maximize the minimum rate among all users through jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vectors and RIS reflecting/amplifying coefficients. Combining tools from block coordinate ascent and succes…
This paper investigates the reconfigurable reflecting surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input-single-output (MISO) systems with imperfect channel state information (CSI), where RIS-related channels are modeled by Rician fading. Considering the overhead and complexity in practical systems, we employ the low-complexity maximum ratio combining (MRC) beamforming at the base station (BS), and configure the phase shifts of the RIS based on long-term statistical CSI. Specifically, we first estimate the overall channel matrix based on the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator, and evaluate the…
In this work, we study the statistically robust beamforming design for an intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless system under imperfect channel state information (CSI), where the channel estimation errors are assumed to be additive Gaussian. We aim at jointly optimizing the transmit/receive beamformers and IRS phase shifts to minimize the average mean squared error (MSE) at the user. In particular, to tackle the non-convex optimization problem, an efficient algorithm is developed by capitalizing on alternating optimization and majorization-m…
This paper investigates the achievable rate region of the multiple-input single-output (MISO) interference channel aided by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). We exploit the the additional design degree of freedom provided by the coordinated IRSs to enhance the desired signal and suppress interference so as to enlarge the achievable rate region of the interference channel. To this end, we jointly optimize the active transmit beamforming at the transmitters and passive reflective beamforming at the IRSs, subject to the constant modulus constraints of reflective beamforming vectors. To minimize the transmit power, both the beamforming vectors at the access point (AP) and phase shifts at the IRS are jointly optimized while taking into account the minimum required quality-of-service (QoS) of the users. To tackle the non-convexity of the formulated optim…
This paper considers an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided multiple-input single-output communication system, where statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited for transmit beamforming and IRS beamforming. A tight upper bound is derived for the ergodic capacity of the system. Based on which, the joint optimization of transmit beam and IRS beam are studied. Depending on whether a line-of-sight path exists between the access point and user, two different cases, namely, Rician fading and Rayleigh fading, are separately treated. Specifically, for the Rician fading case, an ite…
This work focuses on the downlink of a single-cell multi-user system in which a base station (BS) equipped with $M$ antennas communicates with $K$ single-antenna users through a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) installed in the line-of-sight (LoS) of the BS. RIS is envisioned to offer unprecedented spectral efficiency gains by utilizing $N$ passive reflecting elements that induce phase shifts on the impinging electromagnetic waves to smartly reconfigure the signal propagation environment. We study the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) achieved by the optimal linear…
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has the potential to significantly enhance the network performance by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environments. It is however difficult to obtain the accurate downlink channel state information (CSI) for efficient beamforming design in IRS-aided wireless networks. In this article, we consider an IRS-aided downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) network, where the base station (BS) is not required to know the underlying channel distribution. We formulate an outage probability minimization problem by jointly optimizing the beamforming vector a…
In this letter, we investigate the robust and secure beamforming (RSBF) in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input single output (MISO) system, where multiple single antenna eavesdroppers (Eves) are arbitrarily distributed nearby the legitimate receiver. Considering the channel state information (CSI) of Eves' channels is imperfectly known at the legitimate transmitter, the RSBF design problems to maximize the worst case of achievable secrecy rate (ASR) are formulated under the total transmission power and unit-modulus constraints. Since the proble…
Considering intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), we study a multi-cluster multiple-input-single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink communication network. In the network, an IRS assists the communication from the base station (BS) to all users by passive beamforming. Our goal is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vectors at the BS and the reflection coefficient vector at the IRS. Because of the restrictions on the IRS reflection amplitudes and phase shifts, the formulated quadratically constrained quadratic problem is h…
We consider a multi-user Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) communication system comprising of a multi-antenna base station communicating in the downlink simultaneously with multiple single-antenna mobile users. This communication is assumed to be assisted by a Large Intelligent Surface (LIS) that consists of many nearly passive antenna elements, whose parameters can be tuned according to desired objectives. This work considers the IRS-aided multiuser multi-input single-output downlink transmission, and our goal is to maximize the sum rate by jointly optimizing the transmit beamformer at the base station and the phase …
This work considers a point-to-point link where a reconfigurable intelligent surface assists the communication between transmitter and receiver. The system rate, energy efficiency, and their trade-off are optimized with respect to the number of individually tunable elements of the intelligent surface. The resource allocation accounts for the communication phase and for the overhead due to channel estimation and to reporting the optimized resource allocation to the intelligent surface. Numerical results confirm the optimality of the proposed methods and show the potential gains of reconfigurabl…
The current literature on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) focuses on optimizing the IRS phase shifts to yield coherent beamforming gains, under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) of individual IRS-assisted links, which is highly impractical. This work, instead, considers the random rotations scheme at the IRS in which the reflecting elements only employ random phase rotations without requiring any CSI. The only CSI then needed is at the base station (BS) of the overall channel to implement the beamforming transmission scheme. Under this framework, we derive the sum-…
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have drawn considerable attention recently due to their controllable scattering elements that are able to direct electromagnetic waves into desirable directions. In particular, two types of IOS are proposed, energy splitting (ES)-IOS and mode switching (MS)-IOS. We aim to maximize data rate and minimize SI power by optimizing the beamforming vectors, amplitudes and phase shifts…
In this letter, we present an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) selection strategy for multiple IRSs aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. In particular, we pose the IRS selection problem as a stable matching problem. A two stage user-IRS assignment algorithm is proposed, where the main objective is to carry out a stable user-IRS matching, such that the sum rate of the system is improved. The first stage of the proposed algorithm employs a well-known Gale Shapley matching designed for the stable marriage problem. However, due to interference in multiuser systems, the …
In this report, we summarize the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio and the rate of half-duplex, full-duplex, amplify-and-forward, and decode-and-forward relay-aided communications, and well as the signal-to-noise ratio and the rate of the emerging technology known as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces.
This paper defines the problem of optimizing the downlink multi-user multiple input, single output (MU-MISO) sum-rate for ground users served by an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) that acts as a relay to the terrestrial base station. The deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) is proposed to calculate the optimal active beamforming matrix at the base station and the phase shifts of the reflecting elements at the ARIS to maximize the data rate. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed scheme when compared to deep Q-learning (DQL) and baseline approaches.

We propose a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) encoded information transmission scheme for a line-of-sight environment. A RIS fed with data modulates the information on impinging waves emitted from an external source in the states of polarization (SoP) of the scattered waves by performing a novel differential polarization shift keying. In particular, the information is encoded in the change of the SoP over two successive scattering slots. The proposed scheme is immune to the SoP fluctuations in the wireless channel which allows for non-coherent detection at the receiver.
In this letter, we investigate joint application of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and vertical beamforming in cognitive radio networks (CRN). After properly modeling the network, an optimization problem is formed to jointly design the beamforming vector and tilt angle at the secondary base station (BS) as well as the phase shifts at the RIS with the objective of maximizing spectral efficiency of the secondary network. The optimization problem is non-convex; thus, we propose an efficient solution method for it. Numerical results show that adding a RIS and optimizing the radiation ori…

The future of mobile communications looks exciting with the potential new use cases and challenging requirements of future 6th generation (6G) and beyond wireless networks. Since the beginning of the modern era of wireless communications, the propagation medium has been perceived as a randomly behaving entity between the transmitter and the receiver, which degrades the quality of the received signal due to the uncontrollable interactions of the transmitted radio waves with the surrounding objects. The recent advent of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces in wireless communications enables, on t…

Through a synthetic deep neural network (DNN), the direct channel and active cascaded channel are first estimated sequentially, followed by the channel prediction for the inactive RIS elements. A three-stage training strategy is dev…
Sixth generation (6G) mobile networks may include new passive technologies, such as ambient backscatter communication or the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, to avoid the emission of waves and the corresponding energy consumption. On the one hand, a reconfigurable intelligent surface improves the network performance by adding electronically controlled reflected paths in the radio propagation channel. On the other hand, in an ambient backscatter system, a device, named tag, communicates towards a reader by backscattering the waves of an ambient source (such as a TV tower). However, t…

This issue has not been addressed by previous works, which do not explicitly consider the overhead during the resource allocation phase. This work aims at filling this gap, developing an overhead-aware re…
