We show that the full set of solutions to systems of equations and inequations in a hyperbolic group, as shortlex geodesic words (or any regular set of quasigeodesic normal forms), is an EDT0L language whose specification can be computed in NSPACE$(n^2\log n)$ for the torsion-free case and NSPACE$(n^4\log n)$ in the torsion case. Furthermore, in the presence of quasi-isometrically embeddable rational constraints, we show that the full set of solutions to systems of equations in a hyperbolic group remains EDT0L. Our work combines the geometric results of Rips, Sela, Dahmani and Guirardel on the decidability of the existential theory of hyperbolic groups with the work of computer scientists including Plandowski, Jeż, Diekert and others on PSPACE algorithms to solve equations in free monoids and groups using compression, and involves an intricate language-theoretic analysis.
We show that the full set of solutions to systems of equations and inequations in a hyperbolic group, with or without torsion, as shortlex geodesic words, is an EDT0L language whose specification can be computed in $\mathsf{NSPACE}(n^2\log n)$ for the torsion-free case and $\mathsf{NSPACE}(n^4\log n)$ in the torsion case. Our work combines deep geometric results by Rips, Sela, Dahmani and Guirardel on decidability of existential theories of hyperbolic groups, work of computer scientists including Plandowski, Jeż, Diekert and others on $\mathsf{PSPACE}$ algorithms to solve equations in free mon…
In this paper, we prove a limit set intersection theorem in relatively hyperbolic groups. Our approach is based on a study of dynamical quasiconvexity of relatively quasiconvex subgroups. Using dynamical quasiconvexity, many well-known results on limit sets of geometrically finite Kleinian groups are derived in general convergence groups. We also establish dynamical quasiconvexity of undistorted subgroups in finitely generated groups with nontrivial Floyd boundary.
We give a description of definable sets $P=(p_1,..., p_m)$ in a free non-abelian group $F$ and in a torsion-free non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ that follows from our work on the Tarski problems. This answers Malcev's question for $F$. As a corollary we show that proper non-cyclic subgroups of $F$ and $G$ are not definable and prove Bestvina and Feighn's result that definable subsets $P=(p)$ in a free group are either negligible or co-negligible in their terminology.
We formulate the Asymptotic Length-Saturation Conjecture on the length sets of closed geodesics on hyperbolic manifolds whose fundamental groups are subarithmetic, that is, contained in an arithmetic group. We prove the first instance of the conjecture for punctured, Zariski dense covers of the modular surface. The tools involved include the Orbital Circle Method, expansion and counting in congruence towers of thin groups, estimates for exponential sums, bilinear forms, and quadratic L-series.
We prove that for a one-ended hyperbolic graph $X$, the size of the quotient $X/G$ by a group $G$ acting freely and cocompactly bounds from below the number of simplices in an Eilenberg-MacLane space for $G$. We apply this theorem to show that one-ended hyperbolic cubulated groups (or more generally, one-ended hyperbolic groups with globally stable cylinders à la Rips-Sela) cannot contain isomorphic finite-index subgroups of different indices.
If $u$ and $v$ are two conjugate elements of a hyperbolic group then the length of a shortest conjugating element for $u$ and $v$ can be bounded by a linear function of the sum of their lengths, as was proved by Lysenok. Bridson and Haefliger showed that in a hyperbolic group the conjugacy problem can be solved in polynomial time. We extend these results to relatively hyperbolic groups. In particular, we show that both the conjugacy problem and the conjugacy search problem can be solved in polynomial time in a relatively hyperbolic group, whenever the corresponding problem can be solved in pol…
We study sets of solutions to equations over a free group, projections of such sets, and the structure of elementary sets defined over a free group. The structre theory we obtain enable us to answer some questions of A. Tarski's, and classify those finitely generated groups that are elementary equivalent to a free group. Connections with low dimensional topology, and a generalization to (Gromov) hyperbolic groups will also be discussed.
Given a finitely generated relatively hyperbolic group $G$, we construct a finite generating set $X$ of $G$ such that $(G,X)$ has the `falsification by fellow traveler property' provided that the parabolic subgroups $\{H_ω\}_{ω\in Ω}$ have this property with respect to the generating sets $\{X\cap H_ω\}_{ω\in Ω}$. This implies that groups hyperbolic relative to virtually abelian subgroups, which include all limit groups and groups acting freely on $\mathbb{R}^n$-trees, or geometrically finite hyperbolic groups, have generating sets for which the language of geodesics is regular, and the comple…
Consider a finitely generated group $G$ that is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a family of subgroups $H_1, ..., H_n$. We present an axiomatic approach to the problem of extending metric properties from the subgroups $H_i$ to the full group $G$. We use this to show that both (weak) finite decomposition complexity and straight finite decomposition complexity are extendable properties. We also discuss the equivalence of two notions of straight finite decomposition complexity.
We use hyperbolic towers to answer some model theoretic questions around the generic type in the theory of free groups. We show that all the finitely generated models of this theory realize the generic type $p_0$, but that there is a finitely generated model which omits $p_0^{(2)}$. We exhibit a finitely generated model in which there are two maximal independent sets of realizations of the generic type which have different cardinalities. We also show that a free product of homogeneous groups is not necessarily homogeneous.
Let $G$ be a group acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space and let $E$ be an exponential equation over $G$. We show that $E$ is equivalent to a finite disjunction of finite systems of pairwise independent equations which are either loxodromic over virtually cyclic subgroups or elliptic. We also obtain a description of the solution set of $E$. We obtain stronger results in the case where $G$ is hyperbolic relative to a collection of peripheral subgroups $\{H_λ\}_{λ\in Λ}$. In particular, we prove in this case that the solution sets of exponential equations over $G$ are $\mathbb{Z}$-semiline…
This paper is the eighth in a sequence on the structure of sets of solutions to systems of equations in free and hyperbolic groups, projections of such sets (Diophantine sets), and the structure of definable sets over free and hyperbolic groups. In the eighth paper we use a modification of the sieve procedure, that was presented as part of the quantifier elimination process, to prove that free and torsion-free (Gromov) hyperbolic groups are stable.

In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the Floyd and Bowditch boundaries of a relatively hyperbolic group, and show that for the Floyd metric and shortcut metrics respectively, they are are both equal to a constant times the growth rate of the group. In the proof, we study a special class of conical points called uniformly conical points and establish that, in both boundaries, there exists a sequence of Alhfors regular sets with dimension tending to the Hausdorff dimension and these sets consist of uniformly conical points.
We give an example of a definable set in every free or torsion-free (non-elementary) hyperbolic group that is not in the Boolean algebra of equational sets. Hence, the theories of free and torsion-free (non-elementary) hyperbolic groups are not equational in the sense of G. Srour.
