We construct a one-parameter family of static and spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system bifurcating from the Schwarzschild spacetime. The constructed solutions have the property that the spatial support of the matter is a finite, spherically symmetric shell located away from the black hole. Our proof is mostly based on the analysis of the set of trapped timelike geodesics and of the effective potential energy for static spacetimes close to Schwarzschild. This provides an alternative approach to the construction of static solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system in a neighbourhood of black hole vacuum spacetimes.
This paper continues the investigation of the formation of naked singularities in the collapse of collisionless matter initiated in [RV]. There the existence of certain classes of non-smooth solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system was proved. Those solutions are self-similar and hence not asymptotically flat. To obtain solutions which are more physically relevant it makes sense to attempt to cut off these solutions in a suitable way so as to make them asymptotically flat. This task, which turns out to be technically challenging, will be carried out in this paper. [RV] A. D. Rendall and J. J. L…
We prove a local existence and uniqueness result for the non-relativistic and relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system for data which need not even be continuous. The corresponding solutions preserve all the standard conserved quantities and are constant along their pointwise defined characteristic flow so that these solutions are suitable for the stability analysis of not necessarily smooth steady states. They satisfy the well-known continuation criterion and are global in the non-relativistic case. The only unwanted requirement on the data is that they be spherically symmetric.
In this paper, we initiate the study of the asymptotically AdS initial-boundary value problem for the Einstein-massless Vlasov system with $Λ<0$ in spherical symmetry. We will establish the existence and uniqueness of a maximal future development for the characteristic initial-boundary value problem in the case when smooth initial data are prescribed on a future light cone $\mathcal{C}^{+}$ emanating from a point at $\{r=0\}$ and a reflecting boundary condition is imposed on conformal infinity $\mathcal{I}$. We will then prove a number of continuation criteria for smooth solutions of the spher…
In this paper, we study the global behavior of solutions to the spherically symmetric coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon (EKG) system in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We prove that the Schwarzschild-AdS spacetimes (the trivial black hole solutions of the EKG system for which $ϕ=0$ identically) are asymptotically stable: Small perturbations of Schwarzschild-AdS initial data again lead to regular black holes, with the metric on the black hole exterior approaching a Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime. The main difficulties in the proof arise from the lack of monotonicity for the Hawking m…
We prove the existence of static, spherically symmetric solutions of the stellar dynamic Vlasov-Poisson and Vlasov-Einstein systems, which have the property that their spatial support is a finite, spherically symmetric shell with a vacuum region at the center.
We prove uniform decay estimates in the entire exterior of the Schwarzschild black hole for gauge invariant norms on the Yang-Mills fields valued in the Lie algebra associated to the Lie group $SU(2)$. We assume that the initial data are spherically symmetric satisfying a certain Ansatz, and have small energy, which eliminates the stationary solutions which do not decay. In particular, there don't exist any Coulomb type solutions satisfying this Ansatz. We first prove a Morawetz type estimate for the Yang-Mills fields within this setting, using the Yang-Mills equations directly. We then adapt …
We prove global stability of the Minkowski spacetime in the wave coordinates system for the massive Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, compared with previous results by Lindblad-Taylor, in which the Vlasov part is assumed to have compact support assumption, and Fajman-Joudioux-Smulevci, in which the spacetime is assumed to be exact Schwarzschild in the exterior region, we do not impose any compact support condition for the Vlasov part and allow a large class of non-isotropic perturbations for the metric part, which decay at rate $\langle r\rangle^{-1+}$ towards space infinity.
Future stability of expanding spatially homogeneous FLRW solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein--massless Vlasov system with spatial topology $\mathbb{R}^3$
We study smooth, global-in-time solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the plasma physical case that possess arbitrarily large charge densities and electric fields. In particular, we construct two classes of solutions with this property. The first class are spherically-symmetric solutions that initially possess arbitrarily small density and field values, but attain arbitrarily large values of these quantities at some later time. Additionally, we construct a second class of spherically-symmetric solutions that possess any desired mass and attain arbitrarily large density and field values at …
We consider the Burgers equation posed on the outer communication region of a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. Assuming spherical symmetry for the fluid flow under consideration, we study the propagation and interaction of shock waves under the effect of random forcing. First of all, considering the initial and boundary value problem with boundary data prescribed in the vicinity of the horizon, we establish a generalization of the Hopf--Lax--Oleinik formula, which takes the curved geometry into account and allows us to establish the existence of bounded variation solutions. To this end, we …
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
In this paper we study the even part of the linear stability of the Schwarzschild spacetime as a continuation of [22]. By taking the harmonic gauge, we prove that the energy decays at a rate $τ^{-2+}$ for the solution of the linearized Einstein equation after subtracting its spherically symmetric part. We further show that the spherically symmetric part converges to a linear combination of two special solutions. One is the gauge-fixed mass change solution [19]. The other is the deformation tensor of a stationary one form, which solves the tensorial wave equation. As a key ingredient, we prove …
We study smooth, spherically-symmetric solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system and relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system in the plasma physical case. We construct solutions that initially possess arbitrarily small C^k norms for the charge densities and the electric fields, but attain arbitrarily large L^1 norms of them at some later time.
We study the behaviour of smooth solutions to the wave equation, $\square_gψ=0$, in the interior of a fixed Schwarzschild black hole. In particular, we obtain a full asymptotic expansion for all solutions towards $r=0$ and show that it is characterised by its first two leading terms, the principal logarithmic term and a bounded second order term. Moreover, we characterise an open set of initial data for which the corresponding solutions blow up logarithmically on the entirety of the singular hypersurface $\{r=0\}$. Our method is based on deriving weighted energy estimates in physical space and…
We study spherically symmetric solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the context of algebras of generalized functions. This allows to model highly concentrated initial configurations and provides a consistent setting for studying singular limits of the system. The proof of unique solvability in our approach depends on new stability properties of the system with respect to perturbations.
We construct a one-parameter family of stationary axisymmetric and asymptotically flat spacetimes solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system bifurcating from the Kerr spacetime. The constructed solutions have the property that the spatial support of the matter is a finite, axisymmetric shell located away from the black hole. Our proof is mostly based on the analysis of the set of trapped timelike geodesics for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes close to Kerr, where the geodesic flow is not necessarily integrable. Moreover, the analysis of the Einstein field equations relies on the modified Carter…
We consider the spherically symmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills Fields on the Schwarzschild metric. Within the so called purely magnetic Ansatz we show that there exists a countable number of stationary solutions which are all nonlinearly unstable.
Certain steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system can be characterized as minimizers of an energy-Casimir functional, and this fact implies a nonlinear stability property of such steady states. In previous investigations by Y. Guo and the author stability was obtained only with respect to spherically symmetric perturbations. In the present investigation we show how to remove this unphysical restriction.
In recent years, the AdS instability conjecture, put forward by Dafermos-Holzegel in 2006, has attracted a substantial amount of numerical and heuristic studies. Following the pioneering work of Bizon-Rostworowski, research efforts have been mainly focused on the study of the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field system. The first rigorous proof of the instability of AdS in the simplest spherically symmetric setting, namely for the Einstein-null dust system, was obtained in [G. Moschidis, A proof of the instability of AdS for the Einstein-null dust system with an inner mirror, 2017, arXi…
