Measurements of ultrahigh-fidelity absorption spectra can help validate quantum theory, engineer ultracold chemistry, and remotely sense atmospheres. Recent achievements in cavity-enhanced spectroscopy using either frequency-based dispersion or time-based absorption approaches have set new records for accuracy with uncertainties at the sub-per-mil level. However, laser scanning5 or susceptibility to nonlinearities limits their ultimate performance. Here we present cavity buildup dispersion spectroscopy (CBDS) in which the dispersive frequency shift of a cavity resonance is encoded in the cavity's transient response to a phase-locked non-resonant laser excitation. Beating between optical frequencies during buildup exactly localizes detuning from mode center, and thus enables single-shot dispersion measurements. CBDS yields an accuracy limited by the chosen frequency standard, a speed limited by the cavity round-trip time, and is currently 50 times less susceptible to detection nonlinearity compared to intensity-based methods. The universality of CBDS shows promise for improving fundamental research into a variety of light-matter interactions.
Optical cavities provide high sensitivity to dispersion since their resonance frequencies depend on the index of refraction. We present a direct, broadband, and accurate measurement of the modes of a high finesse cavity using an optical frequency comb and a mechanical Fourier transform spectrometer with a kHz-level resolution. We characterize 16000 cavity modes spanning 16 THz of bandwidth in terms of center frequency, linewidth, and amplitude. We retrieve the group delay dispersion of the cavity mirror coatings and pure N${_2}$ with 0.1 fs${^2}$ precision and 1 fs${^2}$ accuracy, as well as t…
We report on an experimental and numerical study of temporal Kerr cavity soliton dynamics in dispersion-managed fiber ring resonators. We find that dispersion management can significantly magnify the Kelly-like resonant radiation sidebands emitted by the solitons. Because of the underlying phase-matching conditions, the sideband amplitudes tend to increase with increasing pump-cavity detuning, ultimately limiting the range of detunings over which the solitons can exist. Our experimental findings show excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
Chirped fiber Bragg gratings in Yb-doped fiber lasers allow tuning the net cavity dispersion, thus enabling access to pulse dynamics beyond the typical all-normal-dispersion dissipative soliton regime. This Letter demonstrates an ultrafast dispersion-managed all-polarization-maintaining fiber oscillator mode-locked with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Using a chirped fiber Bragg grating inside the oscillator, it can work at net cavity dispersion in the range from -0.098 ps$^2$ up to +0.067 ps$^2$ and above at the wavelength of 1 $\mathrmμ$m. Depending on the configuration, the system can deli…
We have developed a technique to measure the absolute frequencies of optical transitions by using an evacuated Rb-stabilized ring-cavity resonator as a transfer cavity. We study possible wavelength-dependent errors due to dispersion at the cavity mirrors by measuring the frequency of the same transition in the $D_2$ line of Cs at three cavity lengths. We find no discernable change in values within our error of 30 kHz. Our values are consistent with measurements using the frequency-comb technique and have similar accuracy.
We report on the generation of multiwavelength gain-guided soliton (GGS) in an all normal dispersion birefringent fiber laser passively mode-locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Determined by the cavity birefringence, we observe the stable single-, dual- and triple- wavelength mode locked GGSs, which is a natural consequence of the mutual nonlinear interaction among the normal cavity dispersion, cavity fiber nonlinear Kerr effect, laser gain saturation and bandwidth limitation resulting from the intra-cavity birefringent filter.
Driven Kerr nonlinear optical resonators can sustain localized structures known as dissipative Kerr cavity solitons, which have recently attracted significant attention as the temporal counterparts of microresonator optical frequency combs. Whilst conventional wisdom asserts that bright cavity solitons can only exist in the region of anomalous dispersion, recent theoretical studies have predicted that higher-order dispersion can fundamentally alter the situation, enabling bright localized structures even under conditions of normal dispersion driving. Here we demonstrate a flexible optical fibr…
We report on the observation of various bound states of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in a passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring laser at near zero net cavity group velocity dispersion (GVD). The generated DM solitons are characterized by their Gaussian-like spectral profile with no sidebands, which is distinct from those of the conventional solitons generated in fiber lasers with large net negative cavity GVD, of the parabolic pulses generated in fiber lasers with positive cavity GVD and negligible gain saturation and bandwidth limiting, and of the gain-guided solitons generated in…
We build on a previously reported frequency comb of mode spacing 0.136 nm in a fiber ring cavity of varying normal dispersion [1], to generate, for the first time, a frequency comb of mode spacing 0.144 nm centered at 978.544 nm to demonstrate the symmetry-breaking. By controlling the birefringence of the optical cavity through fiber stretching and polarization control, the spacing of the comb lines increases from 0.136 nm to 0.144 nm, and this small change in mode spacing generates very different spectral symmetry-breaking in the frequency comb relative to the frequency comb of mode spacing 0…
A numerical model based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is developed to simulate thermal noise in open cavities owing to output coupling. The absorbing boundary of the FDTD grid is treated as a blackbody, whose thermal radiation penetrates the cavity in the grid. The calculated amount of thermal noise in a one-dimensional dielectric cavity recovers the standard result of the quantum Langevin equation in the Markovian regime. Our FDTD simulation also demonstrates that in the non-Markovian regime the buildup of the intracavity noise field depends on the ratio of the cavity pho…
We derive a coupled mode theory for the interaction of an optical cavity with a waveguide that includes waveguide dispersion. The theory can be applied to photonic crystal cavity waveguide structures. We derive an analytical solution to the add and drop spectra arising from such interactions in the limit of linear dispersion. In this limit, the spectra can accurately predict the cold cavity quality factor (Q) when the interaction is weak. We numerically solve the coupled mode equations for the case of a cavity interacting with the band edge of a periodic waveguide, where linear dispersion is n…
Optical cavities containing a negative dispersion medium have been proposed as a means of improving the sensitivity of laser interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors through the creation of white light signal recycling cavities. Here we classically demonstrate that negative dispersion can be realized using an optomechanical cavity pumped by a blue detuned doublet. We used an 85mm cavity with an intra-cavity silicon nitride membrane. Tunable negative dispersion is demonstrated, with a phase derivative $dφ/df$ from $-0.14$ Deg$\cdot$Hz$^{-1}$ to $-4.2\times10^{-3}$ Deg$\cdot$Hz$^{-1}$.
Using numerical simulations of an extended Lugiato-Lefever equation, we analyze the stability and nonlinear dynamics of Kerr frequency combs generated in microresonators and fiber resonators taking into account third-order dispersion effects. We show that cavity solitons underlying Kerr frequency combs, normally sensitive to oscillatory and chaotic instabilities, are stabilized in a wide range of parameter space by third-order dispersion. Moreover, we demonstrate how the snaking structure organizing compound states of multiple cavity solitons is qualitatively changed by third-order dispersion,…
A technique is demonstrated which efficiently transfers light between a tapered standard single-mode optical fiber and a high-Q, ultra-small mode volume, silicon photonic crystal resonant cavity. Cavity mode quality factors of 47000 are measured, and a total fiber-to-cavity coupling efficiency of 44% is demonstrated. Using this efficient cavity input and output channel, the steady-state nonlinear absorption and dispersion of the photonic crystal cavity is studied. Optical bistability is observed for fiber input powers as low as 250 μW, corresponding to a dropped power of 100 μW and 3 fJ of sto…
We theoretically demonstrated the possible emergence of slow-light self-induced transparency solitons in the infinite one-dimensional coupled cavity array, with each cavity containing a single qubit. We have predicted a substantial dependence of pulse transparency on its dimensionless width $τ_0$. In particular, short pulses whose widths range from $τ_0\ll 1$ to $τ_0\lesssim 1$ exhibit simple, almost linear dispersion law with a finite frequency gap of the order of the cavity array photonic band gap. That is, the medium is opaque for very short pulses with carrier wave frequency below the phot…
Organic cavity polaritons are bosonic quasi-particles that arise from the strong interaction between organic molecular excitons and photons within microcavities. The spectral dispersion of third harmonic generation near resonance with the cavity polariton states is studied experimentally via angle-resolved reflected third harmonic generation measurements with several pump wavelengths. In addition, a three-step nonlinear optical transfer matrix model is used to simulate the third harmonic generation using the sum-over-states dispersive nonlinear coefficients, which include hybrid exciton-photon…
Over the past 15 years, several groups have engineered media that are both strongly dispersive and roughly transparent for some finite bandwidth. Relationships and intuitive models that are satisfactory when it is reasonable to neglect dispersion may then fail. We analyze three such cases of failure. First, a simple generalization of the Abraham and Minkowski momenta to dispersive media entails multiplying each per-photon momentum by $n/n_g$, where $n$ is the refractive index and $n_g$ is the group index. The resulting forms are experimentally relevant for the case of the Abraham momentum, but…
Chi-3 micro resonators have enabled compact and portable frequency comb generation, but require sophisticated dispersion control. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach using a chi-2 sheet cavity, where the dispersion requirement is relaxed by cavity phase matching. 21.2 THz broadband comb generation is achieved with uniform line spacing of 133.0 GHz, despite a relatively large dispersion of 275.4 fs^2/mm around 1064nm. With 22.6 % high slope efficiency and 14.9 kW peak power handling, this chi-2 comb can be further stabilized for navigation, telecommunication, astronomy, and spectroscopy…
We have demonstrated that chirped Bragg gratings can compensate for a chromatic dispersion by reflecting different wavelengths at different location along the axis of the gratings. In this paper, we make use of such a dispersion-compensating property to create a white light cavity (WLC) effect that cancels the round trip phase shift due to propagation as the optical frequency is tuned. A pair of LCBGs is used to make the cavity. To fulfill WLC condition, the dispersion profile of the LCBGs is tailored by adjusting parameters such as chirping rate, modulation depth and the length of the grating…
Temporal Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently-driven, dispersive resonators with Kerr-type nonlinearity. It is widely accepted that such solitons react to parameter inhomogeneities by experiencing a temporal drift whose rate is governed by the gradient of the parameter at the soliton's position. This result, however, assumes that the gradient of the inhomogeneity is constant across the soliton, which may not hold true under all situations, e.g. when using bichromatic driving or in the presence of third-order dispersion that gives rise to an extended dispersiv…
We experimentally study the factors that influence the span in frequency combs derived from the crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators. We observe that cavity dispersion plays an important role in generation of combs by cascaded four wave mixing process. We observed combs from the resonators with anomalous dispersion and nearly zero dispersion at the pump wavelength. In addition, the comb generation efficiency is found to be affected by the crossing of modes of different families. The influence of Raman gain is discussed as well as the role of cavity diameter and pump power. Copyright …
Kerr microresonators driven in the normal dispersion regime typically require the presence of localized dispersion perturbations, such as those induced by avoided mode crossings, to initiate the formation of optical frequency combs. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that this requirement can be lifted by driving the resonator with a pulsed pump source. We also show that controlling the desynchronization between the pump repetition rate and the cavity free-spectral range (FSR) provides a simple mechanism to tune the center frequency of the output comb. Using a fiber mini-resonator wit…
Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons (CSs) are persisting pulses of light that manifest themselves in driven optical resonators and that have attracted significant attention over the last decade. Whilst the vast majority of studies have revolved around conditions where the resonator exhibits strong anomalous dispersion, recent studies have shown that solitons with unique characteristics and dynamics can arise under conditions of near-zero-dispersion driving. Here we report on experimental studies of the existence and stability dynamics of Kerr CSs under such conditions. In particular, we experimen…
On-chip optical resonators have proven to be a promising platform for generating Kerr frequency combs. Whispering gallery mode resonators are particularly attractive because of their small footprint as well as low threshold and power consumption. This performance can be attributed to two characteristics: the cavity quality factor (Q) and the cavity dispersion. The input optical field into the cavity is amplified by the cavity Q, enabling nonlinear processes to occur with low input powers. In addition, the total span of the optical comb is governed by the dispersion. In an optical cavity-based …
Three orders of magnitude cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, induced by strong intra-cavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions is demonstrated. The strong dispersion is created by semi-permanent but rapidly reprogrammable changes of the rare earth absorption profiles using optical pumping techniques. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Potential applications are discussed.
We describe a Yb-fiber based laser comb, with a focus on the relationship between net-cavity dispersion and the frequency noise on the comb. While tuning the net cavity dispersion from anomalous to normal, we measure the amplitude noise (RIN), offset frequency (f_CEO) linewidth, and the resulting frequency noise spectrum on f_CEO. We find that the laser operating at zero net-cavity dispersion has many advantages, including an approximately 100x reduction in free-running f_CEO linewidth and frequency noise power spectral density between laser operation at normal and zero dispersion. In this lat…
A femtosecond frequency comb provides a vast number of equidistantly spaced narrow band laser modes that can be simultaneously tuned and frequency calibrated with 15 digits accuracy. Our Vernier spectrometer utilizes all of theses modes in a massively parallel manner to rapidly record both absorption and dispersion spectra with a sensitivity that is provided by a high finesse broad band optical resonator and a resolution that is only limited by the frequency comb line width while keeping the required setup simple.
A recent S matrix-based theory of the quantum-limited linewidth, which is applicable to general lasers, including spatially non-uniform laser cavities operating above threshold, is analyzed in various limits. For broadband gain, a simple interpretation of the Petermann and bad-cavity factors is presented in terms of geometric relations between the zeros and poles of the S matrix. When there is substantial dispersion, on the frequency scale of the cavity lifetime, the theory yields a generalization of the bad-cavity factor, which was previously derived for spatially uniform one-dimensional lase…
The dispersion of a CROW made of photonic crystal mode-gap cavities is pronouncedly asymmetric. This asymmetry cannot be explained by the standard tight binding model. We show that the fundamental cause of the asymmetric dispersion is the fact that the cavity mode profile itself is dispersive, i.e., the mode wave function depends on the driving frequency, not the eigenfrequency. This occurs because the photonic crystal cavity resonances do not form a complete set. By taking into account the dispersive mode profile, we formulate a mode coupling model that accurately describes the asymmetric dis…
Taking advantage of an extended Lugiato--Lefever equation with third-order dispersion, we numerically show that dark cavity solitons formed in normal dispersion of microresonators are capable of emitting dispersive waves in both normal and anomalous dispersion regions, resembling the behavior of the commonly encountered bright cavity solitons. The generated dispersive waves can be accurately predicted by the dissipative radiation theory. In addition, we demonstrate the stability enhancement of Kerr frequency combs in normal dispersion regime in case the dispersive wave is emitted by dark solit…
We analyze the effects of noise and parameter deviations in a bichromatic Raman type white light cavity, with potential applications in precision measurements such as gravitational wave detection. The results show that the dispersion variation induced by parameter deviation can be controlled within $10^{-4}$. The laser phase noise decreases the dispersion magnitude while the amplitude noise increases it. Although we can always adjust the parameters to satisfy the white light condition, both noises make the cavity transmission curve uneven.
We demonstrate for a passive optical cavity containing a dispersive atomic medium, the increase in scale factor near the critical anomalous dispersion is not cancelled by mode broadening or attenuation, resulting in an overall increase in the predicted quantum-noise-limited sensitivity. Enhancements of over two orders of magnitude are measured in the scale factor, which translates to greater than an order-of-magnitude enhancement in the predicted quantum-noise-limited measurement precision, by temperature tuning a low-pressure vapor of non-interacting atoms in a low-finesse cavity close to the…
We investigate experimentally the lifetime of the photons in a cavity containing a medium exhibiting strong positive dispersion. This intracavity positive dispersion is provided by a metastable helium gas at room temperature in the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) regime, in which light propagates at a group velocity of the order of 10000 m/s. The results definitely prove that the lifetime of the cavity photons is governed by the group velocity of light in the cavity, and not its phase velocity.
We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of localized states in Kerr cavities driven at the pure fourth-order dispersion point. Both the normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion regimes are analysed, highlighting the main differences with the standard second order dispersion case. In the anomalous regime, single and multi-peak localised states exist and are stable over a much wider region of the parameter space. In the normal dispersion regime, stable narrow bright solitons exist. Some of our findings can be understood by a new scenario reported here…
Spoof surface modes on nanostructured metallic surfaces are known to have tailorable dispersion dependent on the geometric characteristics of the periodic pattern. Here we examine the spoof plasmon dispersion on an isolated grating and a grating-planar mirror cavity configuration. The spoof polariton dispersion in the cavity is obtained using the scattering matrix approach, and the related differential modal density of states is introduced to obtain the mode dispersion and classify the cavity polariton modes. The grating-mirror cavity geometry is an example of periodically nanostructured metal…
It is widely accepted that Bragg reflection from linearly chirped Bragg gratings (LCBGs) can compensate for a chromatic dispersion by reflecting different wavelengths at different location along the axis of the gratings for ultra-short pulses. In this paper, we studied the possibility of making use of such a dispersion-compensating property to construct a white light cavity (WLC). A pair of LCBGs is suggested as the reflectors of the cavity. The analytical and numerical analysis shows that the reflection by a LCBG does not solely occur at the position where Bragg condition is reached. The accu…
In this letter, we demonstrate the first all-fiber all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped oscillator with nonlinear multimodal interference based saturable absorber capable to generate ultrashort dissipative soliton pulses. Additional to functioning as a saturable absorber, the use of multimode fiber segments between single mode fibers also ensures the bandpass filtering via multimode interference reimaging necessary to obtain dissipative soliton mode-locking. The oscillator generates dissipative soliton pulses at 1030 nm with 5.8 mW average power, 5 ps duration and 44.25 MHz repetition rate. P…
Kerr optical frequency combs generated in a coherently driven Kerr nonlinear resonator has the potential for a wide range of applications. However, in a single cavity which is a widely adopted configuration for Kerr optical frequency combs generation, modulation instability is suppressed in normal dispersion regime and the pump-to-comb conversion efficiency is extremely low for a single dissipative Kerr soliton in anomalous dispersion regime. Dual-coupled cavities have been proposed to generate Kerr optical frequency combs in normal dispersion regime, and have potential to remarkably increase …
We examine a coherently-driven, dispersion-managed, passive Kerr fiber ring resonator and report the first direct experimental observation of dispersive wave emission by temporal cavity solitons. Our observations are in excellent agreement with analytical predictions and they are fully corroborated by numerical simulations. These results lead to a better understanding of the behavior of temporal cavity solitons under conditions where higher-order dispersion plays a significant role. Significantly, since temporal cavity solitons manifest themselves in monolithic microresonators, our results are…
A novel concept of self-phasematched optical frequency conversion in dispersive dielectric microcavities is studied theoretically and experimentally. We develop a time-dependent model, incorporating the dispersion into the structure of the spatial cavity modes and translating the phasematching requirement into the optimization of a nonlinear cavity mode overlap. We design and fabricate integrated double-resonance semiconductor microcavities for self-phasematched second harmonic generation. The measured efficiency exhibits a significant maximum near the cavity resonance due to the intra-cavity …
More than 4 orders of magnitude of cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, emanating from strong intracavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions, is demonstrated. The dispersion profiles are engineered using optical pumping techniques creating significant semipermanent but reprogrammable changes of the rare-earth absorption profiles. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Several possible applications of this phenomenon are discussed.
We experimentally study the factors that limit the span in frequency combs derived from the crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators. We observe that cavity dispersion is the key property that governs the parameters of the combs resulting from cascaded four wave mixing process. Two different regimes of comb generation are observed depending on the precise cavity dispersion behavior at the pump wavelength. In addition, the comb generation efficiency is found to be affected by the crossing of modes of different families. The influence of Raman lasing is discussed.
We analyze the dynamics of passively mode-locked integrated external-cavity surface-emitting Lasers (MIXSELs) using a first-principle dynamical model based upon delay algebraic equations. We show that the third order dispersion stemming from the lasing micro-cavity induces a train of decaying satellites on the leading edge of the pulse. Due to the nonlinear interaction with carriers, these satellites may get amplified thereby destabilizing the mode-locked states. In the long cavity regime, the localized structures that exist below the lasing threshold are found to be deeply affected by this in…
We review and critically evaluate our proposal of a pulse amplification scheme based on two Bose-Einstein condensates inside the resonator of a mode-locked laser. Two condensates are used for compensating the group velocity dispersion. Ultraslow light propagation through the condensate leads to a considerable increase in the cavity round-trip delay time, lowers the effective repetition rate of the laser, and hence scales up the output pulse energy. It has been recently argued that atom-atom interactions would make our proposal even more efficient. However, neither in our original proposal nor …
We report an investigation of dispersion management of an all-polarization maintaining Er-fiber oscillator mode-locked via nonlinear amplification loop mirror in a figure-nine cavity configuration with two output ports. The performance of the laser was investigated within the net cavity dispersion ranging from -0.034 ps2 to +0.006 ps2. We show that the spectral and temporal phase of the pulses at both figure-nine outputs have clearly different characteristics. One of the laser outputs provides pulses with significantly better quality; nonetheless, the rejection output also offers ultrashort pu…
Spontaneously generated coherence and enhanced dispersion in a V-type, three-level atomic system interacting with a single mode field can considerably reduce the radiative and cavity decay rates. This may eliminate the use of high finesse, miniaturized cavities in optical cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments under strong atom-field coupling conditions.
We study Kerr frequency combs and dissipative Kerr solitons in silicon photonic crystal coupled-cavity waveguides (CCW) with globally optimized dispersion at telecom wavelengths. The corresponding threshold for comb generation is found to explicitly depend on the main CCW figures of merit, namely, mode volume, normal mode quality factor and slow-light group index. Our analysis is carried out by solving the non-linear dynamics of the CCW Bloch modes in presence of Kerr non-linearity and two-photon absorption. Our results open the way to CCW comb generation via dispersion engineering and slow-li…
This paper derives Langevin equations for an optical cavity where the dominant nonlinearity arises from free-carrier dispersion. We define a generalized Wigner function, compute a Fokker-Planck equation that approximates the master equation, and convert this to a system of stochastic differential equations. These equations are similar to the Wigner equations for an optical Kerr cavity, but have additional noise terms due to the incoherent carrier excitation and decay processes. We use these equations to simulate a phase-sensitive amplifier and latch and compare the results to a Kerr model.
