We describe a Yb-fiber based laser comb, with a focus on the relationship between net-cavity dispersion and the frequency noise on the comb. While tuning the net cavity dispersion from anomalous to normal, we measure the amplitude noise (RIN), offset frequency (f_CEO) linewidth, and the resulting frequency noise spectrum on f_CEO. We find that the laser operating at zero net-cavity dispersion has many advantages, including an approximately 100x reduction in free-running f_CEO linewidth and frequency noise power spectral density between laser operation at normal and zero dispersion. In this latter regime, we demonstrate a phase-locked f_CEO beat with low residual noise.
Compensation of nonlinear phase shifts with third-order dispersion: fiber stretchers can out-perform grating stretchers in short-pulse fiber amplifiers
Chirped fiber Bragg gratings in Yb-doped fiber lasers allow tuning the net cavity dispersion, thus enabling access to pulse dynamics beyond the typical all-normal-dispersion dissipative soliton regime. This Letter demonstrates an ultrafast dispersion-managed all-polarization-maintaining fiber oscillator mode-locked with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. Using a chirped fiber Bragg grating inside the oscillator, it can work at net cavity dispersion in the range from -0.098 ps$^2$ up to +0.067 ps$^2$ and above at the wavelength of 1 $\mathrmμ$m. Depending on the configuration, the system can deli…
The propagation of a continuous wave in the average anomalous dispersion region of a dispersion oscillating fiber is investigated numerically and experimentally. We demonstrate that the train of solitons arising from modulation instability is strongly affected by the periodic variations of the fiber dispersion. This leads to the emission of multiple resonant radiations located on both sides of the spectrum. Numerical simulations confirm the experimental results and the position of the resonant radiations is well predicted by means of perturbation theory.
A phenomenological model for spectral broadening of incoherent light in silica fibers via self-phase modulation and dispersion is presented, aiming at providing a qualitative and readily accessible description of incoherent light spectral broadening. In this model, the incoherent light is approximated by a cosine power-modulated light with modulation parameters depending on the coherent time and the dispersion in fibers. A simple and practical method for spectral broadening predictions is given and demonstrated by both the straightforward NLSE-based numerical modeling and series of experiments…
Propagation of broadband photon pairs over deployed telecommunication fibers is used to achieve nonlocal dispersion compensation without the deliberate introduction of negative dispersion. This is made possible by exploiting time-energy entanglement and the positive and negative dispersive properties of the fiber. We demonstrate preservation of photon timing correlations after transmission over two multi-segment 10km spans of deployed fiber and up to 80km of laboratory-based fiber.
We report on the observation of both stable dissipative solitons and noise-like pulses with the presence of strong Raman scattering in a relatively short all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser. We show that Raman scattering can be filtered out by intracavity filter. Furthermore, by appropriate intracavity polarization control, the Raman effect can be utilized to generate broadband noise-like pulses (NLPs) with bandwidth up to 61.4 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest NLP achieved in all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers
In this article we have theoretically investigated the dispersion characteristics of dual-core PCF, based on square-lattice geometry by varying different parameters. The fiber exhibits a very large negative dispersion because of rapid slope change of the refractive indices at the coupling wavelength between the inner core and outer core. The dependence of different geometrical parameters namely hole-to-hole spacing (pitch) and different air-hole diameter (d) was investigated in detail. By proper adjustment of the available parameters, a high negative dispersion value of -47,500 ps/nm/km has be…
We present broadband group velocity dispersion (GVD) measurements of commercially available ultra-high numerical aperture fibers (UHNA1, UHNA3, UHNA4, UHNA7 and PM2000D from Coherent-Nufern). Although these fibers are attractive for dispersion management in ultrafast fiber laser systems in the 2 μm wavelength region, experimental dispersion data in literature is scarce and inconsistent. Here we demonstrate the measurements using the spectral interferometry technique covering the typically used erbium, thulium and holmium emission bands. The results are characterized in terms of the standard-de…
We present empirical formulae that can provide dispersion and average effective area of the fundamental mode in hollow-core antiresonant fibers. The formulae draw on the structural parameters of the fiber, and allow one to obtain the guiding properties over a wide spectral bandwidth, without the need for time consuming numerical simulations. The formulae are validated by comparing their results with those obtained using a finite-element method. We also analyze the effects of changing the number of antiresonant tubes, as well as adding nested elements in the antiresonant tubes on the guiding pr…
Evolution of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser with pump power under various operation conditions are experimentally studied. The fiber laser is mode-locked by using a nonlinear fiber loop mirror. Apart from the typical pulse broadening due to the peak power clamping effect, pulse breaking was observed. In addition, pulse narrowing with pump power increasing was observed. All the incompatible evolution of DSR pulses could be attributed to the multiple parameters change due to pump power increasing under specific operation conditions.

Novel triangular lattice photonic crystal fiber with a very large negative flattened dispersion over the S+C+L band, and very high birefringence is offered here. To investigate different optical properties of the proposed fiber, finite element method (FEM) is deployed. The fiber presents a flattened negative dispersion of $-698.5\pm 5 ps/(nm-km)$ over the wavelength of $1440 nm$ to $1600 nm$. Besides, the proposed photonic crystal fiber (PCF) exhibits a high birefringence of $1.886\times10^{-2}$ at the wavelength of $1550 nm$. Furthermore, the nonlinearity, single modeness, effective area etc.…
We present a comprehensive study of dispersion managed ultrashort-pulse generation in Nd-doped polarization maintaining all-fiber laser at a 920 nm wavelength. We implement a linear laser scheme with a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) serving as a semitransparent mirror and semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) as a mode-locker and as a second non-transparent mirror. Complete 1064 nm emission filtering is ensured by 920/1064 wavelength division multiplexer. The dispersion compensation by CFBG was sufficient to reach anomalous net dispersion in the shortest laser scheme allowing us …
Generation of high-repetition-rate, femtosecond, soliton pulse trains through dual-wavelength pumping of a dispersion-decreasing fiber is studied numerically. The achievable shortest pulse width is found to be limited by third-order dispersion that has a significant effect on the pulse-compression dynamics. The output wavelength is red shifted because of intrapulse Raman scattering and depends heavily on third-order dispersion, whose positive values lead to the most red shifted solitons (>25% of the input pump center wavelength). The proposed scheme allows the generation of ultrashort pulse tr…
In this letter, we demonstrate the first all-fiber all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped oscillator with nonlinear multimodal interference based saturable absorber capable to generate ultrashort dissipative soliton pulses. Additional to functioning as a saturable absorber, the use of multimode fiber segments between single mode fibers also ensures the bandpass filtering via multimode interference reimaging necessary to obtain dissipative soliton mode-locking. The oscillator generates dissipative soliton pulses at 1030 nm with 5.8 mW average power, 5 ps duration and 44.25 MHz repetition rate. P…
This paper presents a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with heptagonal core and heptagonal cladding for dispersion compensation. Different optical properties of the suggested PCF are explored using the finite element method (FEM). The proposed dispersion compensating PCF (DC-PCF) exhibits a very large negative chromatic dispersion of $-940 ps/(nm-km)$ at $1550 nm$ wavelength. The overall dispersion of the DC-PCF is $-420.1$ to $-1160 ps/(nm-km)$ in the wavelength range of $1390$ to $1700 nm$ ($310 nm$ band). The relative dispersion slope is $0.0036 nm^{-1}$ which is a perfect match with the standa…
We study resonant radiation generated by bound solitons in a twin-core fiber near zero-dispersion wavelength, in the presence of higher order dispersion terms. We propose a theoretical description of dispersive wave generation mechanism and derive resonance conditions. The presence of third order dispersion term leads to generation of polychromatic dispersive radiation and transition from the regime of center of mass oscillations to the regime of amplitude oscillations. Such a transition is not reproduced in the case of symmetric fourth order dispersion.
We address the generation and interaction of dispersion-managed dissipative solitons (DMDS) in a model of fiber lasers with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity, multiphoton absorption and gain dispersion. Both anomalous and normal segments of the dispersion map include random dispersion fluctuations. Effects of the gain dispersion, higher-order nonlinearity and randomness on the generation of DMDS are demonstrated. The solitons exhibit breather-like evolution, and are found to be robust, up to a certain critical level of the random-dispersion component, which is sufficiently high. The roles of mult…
We experimentally demonstrate Kerr beam self-cleaning in the anomalous dispersion regime of graded-index multimode optical fibers. By using 90 ps duration, highly chirped (2 nm bandwidth at -3dB) optical pulses at 1562 nm, we demonstrate a 2 decades reduction, with respect to previous experiments in the normal dispersion regime, of threshold peak power for beam self-cleaning into the fundamental mode of the fiber, accompanied by more than 65% nonlinear increase of intensity correlation into the fundamental mode. Highly efficient self-selection of the LP11 mode is also observed. Self-cleaned be…
We demonstrate self-started unidirectional dissipative soliton operation and noise-like pulse operation in an all-normal-dispersion bidirectional Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation. The laser works unidirectional once mode locking was achieved due to the cavity directional nonlinearity asymmetry along with the nonlinear polarization rotation mode locking mechanism.
Determined polarization state of light is required in nonlinear optics applications related to ultrashort and single-cycle light pulse generation. We report on the development - from linear simulations of the fiber structure, through fabrication of physical fibers to their versatile characterization - of polarization maintaining, highly nonlinear photonic crystal fibers, intended for femtosecond pumping at a wavelength of …
