We report the coexistence of the Kondo effect and spin glass behavior in Fe-doped NbS$_2$ single crystals. The Fe$_x$NbS$_2$ shows the resistance minimum and negative magnetoresistance due to the Kondo effect, and exhibits no superconducting behavior at low temperatures. The resistance curve follows a numerical renormalization-group theory using the Kondo temperature $T_K =12.3$~K for $x=0.01$ as evidence of Kondo effect. Scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) revealed the presence of Fe atoms near sulfur atoms and asymmetric spectra. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a feature of spin glass. The static critical exponents determined by the universal scaling of the nonlinear part of the susceptibility suggest a three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass. The doped-Fe atoms in the intra- and inter-layers revealed by the X-ray result can realize the coexistence of the Kondo effect and spin glass.
Coexistence between ferromagnetic order and Kondo behavior has been observed in some uranium compounds. The underscreened Kondo lattice model can provide a possible description of this coexistence. Here we present a model of a lattice of S=1 spins coupled to the conduction electrons through an intra-site exchange interaction $J_{K}$ and an inter-site ferromagnetic exchange $f-f$ interaction $J_{H}$. Finite temperature results show that the Kondo temperature is larger than the Curie ordering temperature, $T_{C}$, providing a possible scenario for the coexistence of Kondo effect and magnetic ord…
We analyze the impact of strong correlations on the surface states of a three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator. An important observation is that correlations are strongly increased at the surface, which leads to an energetical confinement of the surface $f$-electrons into a narrow window around the Fermi energy at low enough temperature. This correlation effect in combination with the nontrivial topology has two remarkable consequences: (i) coexistence of light and heavy surface states at low temperatures. While heavy surface states are formed directly in the surface layer, light surfac…
We study the effect of crystal field anisotropy in the underscreened $S=1$ Kondo lattice model. Starting from the two orbital Anderson lattice model and including a local anisotropy term, we show, through Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, that local anisotropy is equivalent to an anisotropic Kondo interaction ($J_{\parallel} \neq{J_{\perp}}$). The competition and coexistence between ferromagnetism and Kondo effect in this effective model is studied within a generalized mean-field approximation. Several regimes are obtained, depending on the parameters, exhibiting or not coexistence of magnetic …
We report on the electronic band structure, structural, magnetic and thermal properties of Ce$_2$Rh$_3$Sn$_5$. Ce $L_{\mathrm{III}}$-edge XAS spectra give direct evidence for an intermediate valence behaviour. Thermodynamic measurements reveal magnetic transitions at $T_{\mathrm{N1}}\approx$ 2.9 K and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}\approx$ 2.4 K. Electrical resistivity shows behaviour typical for Kondo lattices. The coexistence of magnetic order and valence fluctuations in a Kondo lattice system we attribute to a peculiar crystal structure in which Ce ions occupy two distinct lattice sites. Analysis of the …
We present theoretical results for the underscreened Kondo lattice model with localized S=1 spins coupled to a conduction band through a Kondo coupling, $J_K$, and interacting among them ferromagnetically. We use a fermionic representation for the spin operators and expand the Hamiltonian in terms of bosonic fields. For large values of $J_K$, we obtain a ferromagnetically ordered solution and a Kondo regime with a Kondo temperature, $T_K$, larger than the Curie temperature, $T_C$. This finding suggests a scenario for a coexistence of Kondo effect and ferromagnetic order. In some uranium compou…
Magnetic properties of uranium and neptunium compounds showing the coexistence of Kondo screening effect and ferromagnetic order are investigated within the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian with a two-fold degenerate $f$-level in each site, corresponding to $5f^2$ electronic configuration with $S=1$ spins. A derivation of the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation is presented and the resulting Hamiltonian has an effective $f$-band term, in addition to the regular exchange Kondo interaction between the $S=1$ $f$-spins and the $s=1/2$ spins of the conduction electrons. The obtained effective Kondo lattice…
Realization of Kondo lattice in superconducting van der Waals materials not only provides a unique opportunity for tuning the Kondo lattice behavior by electrical gating or intercalation, but also is helpful for further understanding the heavy fermion superconductivity. Here we report a low-temperature and vector-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study on a superconducting compound (4Hb-TaS2) with alternate stacking of 1T-TaS2 and 1H-TaS2 layers. We observe the quasi-two-dimensional superconductivity in the 1H-TaS2 layer with anisotropic response to the in-plane and…
The interplay of Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions with thermal and quantum fluctuations facilitates rich phase diagrams in two-dimensional electron systems. Layered transition metal dichalcogenides hosting charge, excitonic, spin and superconducting order form an epitomic material class in this respect. Theoretical studies of materials like NbS$_2$ have focused on the electron-phonon coupling whereas the Coulomb interaction, particularly strong in the monolayer limit, remained essentially untouched. Here, we analyze the interplay of short- and long-range Coulomb as well as electron-pho…
The usual Kondo-lattice, including an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between nearest-neighboring localized spins, is treated here in a mean-field scheme that introduces two mean-field parameters: one associated with the local Kondo effect, and the other related to the magnetic correlations between localized spins. Phases with short-range magnetic correlations or coexistence between those and the Kondo effect are obtained. By varying the number of electrons in the conduction band, we notice that the Kondo effect tends to be suppressed away from half filling, while magnetic correlations …
We investigate the interplay between the Kondo effect and randomness in MxTiSe2 (M = Co, Ni, and Fe) single crystals. Although the typical low-T upturn of resistivity implies the Kondo effect around the single-ion Kondo temperature \overline{T}_{K}, positive magnetoresistance linearly proportional to the magnetic field and the power-law scaling of magnetization suggest the forbidden coexistence between Kondo effect and time reversal symmetry breaking. This puzzling result is resolved by the Griffiths scenario - disorder-induced distribution of the Kondo temperature produces an effective Kondo …
The underscreened Kondo effect is studied within a model of two impurities S=1 interacting with the conduction band and via an interimpurity coupling $K\vec{S_1}.\vec{S_2}$. Using a mean-field treatment of the bosonized Hamiltonian, we show that there is no phase transition, but a continuous cross-over versus K from a non Kondo behaviour to an underscreened Kondo one. For a small antiferromagnetic coupling (K>0), a completely asymmetric situation is obtained with one s=${1/2}$ component strongly screened by the Kondo effect and the other one almost free to yield indirect magnetism, which shows…
We investigate the Kondo effect in the two-dimensional electron system with a non-trivial quadratic energy band crossing point. We show that the Kondo effect can induce a new hybrid topological insulator phase which is a coexistence state of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the TRSbroken quantum spin Hall effect. This hybrid topological insulator exhibits not only a quantized charge Hall current but also a net spin current, which are localized at the edge boundaries. This peculiar topological state arises due to the interplay of two marginally relevant operators, i.e., the Kondo-coupling …
Numerical investigation on the thermodynamic properties of an Ising spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice is reported. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we investigated the magnetic phases at 1/3-filling. We identified two successive transitions from high-temperature paramagnetic state to a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like phase in an intermediate temperature range and to a partially disordered phase at a lower temperature. The partially disordered state is characterized by coexistence of antiferromagnetic hexagons and paramagnetic sites with period $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$. We compare the results…
The Doniach's diagram has been originally proposed to describe the competition between the local Kondo effect and the intersite RKKY interactions in cerium compounds. Here we discuss the extension of this diagram to different variations of Kondo lattice model. We consider a) ordered cerium compounds where the competition between magnetic order and Kondo effect plays an important role, as $CeRh_2Si_2$, b) disordered cerium systems with competing spin glass phase, magnetic ordered phases and a Kondo phase, as the heavy fermion cerium alloy $CeCu_xNi_{1-x}$ and, c) uranium compounds where a coexi…
Kondo-lattice theory for the t-J model and a phenomenological theory based on it are developed to study superconductivity in the vicinity of the Mott metal-insulator transition. Since the quenching of magnetic moments by single-site quantum spin fluctuations or the Kondo effect is reduced by the opening of a superconducting gap, spin density wave (SDW) can appear in a superconducting state and the Knight shift can deviate from the Yosida function to be small. The electron-phonon interaction, which arises from the modulation of the superexchange interaction by phonons, is crucial in the coexist…
We report our theoretical results on the emergence of a partially-disordered state at zero temperature and its detailed nature in the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice at half filling. The partially-disordered state is characterized by coexistence of a collinear antiferromagnetic order on an unfrustrated honeycomb subnetwork and nonmagnetic state at the remaining sites. This state appears with opening a charge gap between a noncollinear antiferromagnetic metal and Kondo insulator while changing the hybridization and Coulomb repulsion. We also find a characteristic crossover in th…
Phase diagram of an Ising-spin Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice near 1/3-filling is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. We identify a partially disordered phase with coexistence of magnetic order and paramagnetic moments, which was unstable in two-dimensional Ising models with localized spins only. The partial disorder emerges in the competing regime between a twosublattice stripe phase and three-sublattice ferrimagnetic phase, at finite temperatures above an electronic phase separation. The peculiar magnetic structure accompanies a charge order and develops a gap in the electro…
The unusual electronic and magnetic properties of the systems Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$T$_6$ (T = Ge, Si) with two non-equivalent Ce positions are discussed. The logarithmic growth of resistance for both the systems confirms the presence of the Kondo effect in the two respective temperature ranges. The two-scale behavior is explained by consecutive splitting of Ce ion levels in the crystal field. The effects of the frustration caused by the coexistence of the different positions of cerium are treated, which may also significantly enhance the observed values of specific heat. A model of "molecular magnet…
A theory of Kondo lattices is applied to studying possible magnetic and charge structures of itinerant-electron antiferromagnets. Even helical spin structures can be stabilized when the nesting of the Fermi surface is not sharp and the superexchange interaction, which arises from the virtual exchange of pair excitations across the Mott-Hubbard gap, is mainly responsible for magnetic instability. Sinusoidal spin structures or spin density waves (SDW) are only stabilized when the nesting of the Fermi surface is sharp enough and a novel exchange interaction arising from that of pair excitations o…
We consider local magnetic moments coupled to conduction electrons with on-site attraction, in order to discuss the interplay between pairing and magnetic order. We probe the ground state properties of this model on a one-dimensional lattice through pair binding energies and several correlation functions, calculated by means of density-matrix renormalization group. A phase diagram is obtained (for fixed electron density 1/3), from which we infer that coexistence between magnetic order and superconductivity is robust, at the expense of a continuous distortion of the magnetic arrangement of the …
Inspired by the recent experimental evidence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexistence in heavy fermion CeRhIn$_5$, we propose a fully microscopic approach based on the idea of real space pairing within the Anderson-Kondo lattice model. We present an overall phase diagram incorporating the emergence of a quantum critical point, where Kondo insulating (KI), antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases meet. We also obtain the Kondo insulating state with totally compensated magnetic moments as the parental state for the emerging SC phases. Furthermore, the coexistent (AF+…
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the Kondo-lattice system CeRuSi2 are experimentally investigated and analyzed in the series of other ternary cerium compounds. This system is shown to be an excellent model system demonstrating coexistence of the Kondo effect and anomalous ferromagnetism with a small magnetic moment which is confirmed by magnetic and μSR measurements. Data on specific heat, resistivity and Seebeck coefficient are presented. Being deduced from the resistivity and specific heat data, the non-Fermi-liquid behavior is observed at low temperatures, which is unus…

Quantum point contacts (QPCs) and quantum dots (QDs), two elementary building blocks of semiconducting nanodevices, both exhibit famously anomalous conductance features: the 0.7-anomaly in the former case, the Kondo effect in the latter. For both the 0.7-anomaly and the Kondo effect, the conductance shows a remarkably similar low-energy dependence on temperature $T$, source-drain voltage $V_{\rm sd}$ and magnetic field $B$. In a recent publication [F. Bauer et al., Nature, 501, 73 (2013)], we argued that the reason for these similarities is that both a QPC and a KQD feature spin fluctuations t…
The phase diagram of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic Hund's coupling in the limit where the spin of the localized $t_{2g}$ electrons is classical is analyzed in one dimension as a function of temperature, electronic density, and a direct antiferromagnetic coupling $J'$ between the localized spins. Studying static and dynamical properties, a behavior that qualitatively resembles experimental results for manganites occurs for $J'$ smaller than 0.11 in units of the $e_g$ hopping amplitude. In particular a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic excitations is observed …
We investigate the Kondo effect with Wilson fermions. This is based on a mean-field approach for the chiral Gross-Neveu model including four-point interactions between a light Wilson fermion and a heavy fermion. For massless Wilson fermions, we demonstrate the appearance of the Kondo effect. We point out that there is a coexistence phase with both the light-fermion scalar condensate and Kondo condensate, and the critical chemical potentials of the scalar condensate are shifted by the Kondo effect. For negative-mass Wilson fermions, we find that the Kondo effect is favored near the parameter re…
Planar macroscopic magnetic tunnel junctions exhibit well defined zero bias anomalies when a thin layer of ferromagnetic CoFe(B) nanodots is inserted within a MgO based tunnel barrier. The conductance curves exhibit a single and a double peak, respectively, for anti-parallel and parallel alignment of the magnetizations of the electrodes which sandwich the tunnel barrier. This leads to a suppression of the tunneling magnetoresistance near zero bias. We show that the double peak structure indicates that the zero-bias anomaly is spin-split due to a magnetic exchange interaction between the magnet…
We show how Oshikawa's theorem for the Fermi surface volume of the Kondo lattice can be extended to the SU$(N)$ symmetric case. By extending the theorem, we are able to show that the mechanism of Fermi surface expansion seen in the large $N$ mean-field theory is directly linked to the expansion of the Fermi surface in a spin-$1/2$ Kondo lattice. This linkage enables us to interpret the expansion of the Fermi surface in a Kondo lattice as a fractionalization of the local moments into heavy electrons. Our method allows extension to a pure U(1) spin liquid, where we find the volume of the spinon …
We present a detailed numerical study of spin and charge dynamics of the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with hopping t and exchange J. At T=0 and J > 0, the competition between the RKKY interaction and Kondo effect triggers a quantum phase transition between magnetically ordered and disordered insulators: J_c/t = 1.45(5). The quasiparticle gap scales as |J|. S(q,ω), evolves smoothly from its strong coupling form with spin gap at q = (π,π) to a spin wave form. At J>0, A(\vec{k},ω) shows a dispersion relation following that of hybridized bands. For J < J_c this feature is supplemented by sh…
We investigate the properties of the Kitaev-Kondo lattice model defined on a bilayer honeycomb lattice by means of the SO(3) Majorana representation for spin-$1/2$ moments. We first consider the pairing of neighboring sites for the parent Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) Hamiltonian to render the Majorana and the spin-$1/2$ Hilbert spaces perfectly equivalent to each other. As a consequence, we demonstrate that this decoupling of the Kitaev interaction in terms of the SO(3) Majorana fermions reproduces exactly the spectrum of the KSL model alone. Then, by considering the effect of a local Kondo coupli…

The interplay between Kondo screening and magnetic interactions is central to comprehending the intricate phases in heavy-fermion compounds. However, the role of the itinerant magnetic order, which is driven by the conducting (c) electrons, has been largely uncharted in the context of heavy-fermion systems due to the scarcity of material candidates. Here we demonstrate the coexistence of the coherent Kondo screening and d-orbital ferromagnetism in material system La$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Co$_2$As$_2$, through comprehensive thermodynamic and electrical transport measurements. Additionally, using angle-r…
We study the Kondo effect for a $Σ_{c}$ ($Σ_{c}^{\ast}$) baryon in nuclear matter. In terms of the spin and isospin ($\mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{spin}} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{isospin}}$) symmetry, the heavy-quark spin symmetry and the S-wave interaction, we provide the general form of the Lagrangian for a $Σ_{c}$ ($Σ_{c}^{\ast}$) baryon and a nucleon. We analyze the renormalization equation at the one-loop level, and find that the coexistence of spin exchange and isospin exchange magnifies the Kondo effect in comparison with the case where the spin-exchange interaction and the isospin-exc…
In recent years, the study on the Kondo insulator SmB6, a strongly correlated electron material with decades-long puzzles, has become one of the most attractive topics again because the discovery of the coexistence of its unusual metallic surface state with an insulating bulk. Many efforts have been made in understanding the corresponding physics behind in SmB6, but some puzzles on it, being hotly debated and argued, has not been solved. In this article, based on the latest progress in our high pressure studies and the accumulating results reported by other groups on SmB6, we propose a notion …
To study the electron-phonon mechanism of superconductivity in NaxCoO2, we perform semiquantitative analysis of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) between relevant optical phonons (breathing and shear phonons) and t_{2g} electrons (a_{1g} and e_g' electrons) in the presence of trigonal distortion. We consider two kinds of contributions to the EPI; the EPI originating from the Coulomb potential of O ions and that originating from the d-p transfer integral between Co and O in CoO_6 octahedron. We find that the EPI for shear phonons, which induces the interorbital hopping of electrons, is larg…
The theory behind the electrical switching of antiferromagnets is premised on the existence of a well defined broken symmetry state that can be rotated to encode information. A spin glass is in many ways the antithesis of this state, characterized by an ergodic landscape of nearly degenerate magnetic configurations, choosing to freeze into a distribution of these in a manner that is seemingly bereft of information. In this study, we show that the coexistence of spin glass and antiferromagnetic order allows a novel mechanism to facilitate the switching of the antiferromagnet Fe$_{1/3+δ}$NbS$_2$…
Although Fe-based superconductors are multiorbital correlated electronic systems, previous nuclei magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement suggests that a single spin-fluid model is sufficient to describe its spin behavior. Here, we firstly observed the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in a heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductor CsFe2As2 by site-selective NMR measurement. At high temperature regime, both of Knight shift and nuclei spin-lattice relaxation at 133Cs and 75As nuclei exhibit distinct temperature-dependent behavior, suggesting the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in CsFe2As2…
