The theory behind the electrical switching of antiferromagnets is premised on the existence of a well defined broken symmetry state that can be rotated to encode information. A spin glass is in many ways the antithesis of this state, characterized by an ergodic landscape of nearly degenerate magnetic configurations, choosing to freeze into a distribution of these in a manner that is seemingly bereft of information. In this study, we show that the coexistence of spin glass and antiferromagnetic order allows a novel mechanism to facilitate the switching of the antiferromagnet Fe$_{1/3+δ}$NbS$_2$, which is rooted in the electrically-stimulated collective winding of the spin glass. The local texture of the spin glass opens an anisotropic channel of interaction that can be used to rotate the equilibrium orientation of the antiferromagnetic state. The use of a spin glass' collective dynamics to electrically manipulate antiferromagnetic spin textures has never been applied before, opening the field of antiferromagnetic spintronics to many more material platforms with complex magnetic textures.
Conversion of glassy antiferromagnetic-insulating phase to equilibrium ferromagnetic-metallic phase by devitrification and recrystallization in Al substituted Pr${_{0.5}}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO${_3}$
Antiferromagnetic spintronics is one of the leading candidates for next-generation electronics. Among abundant antiferromagnets, noncollinear antiferromagnets are promising for achieving practical applications due to coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic merits. In this perspective, we briefly review the recent progress in the emerging noncollinear antiferromagnetic spintronics from fundamental physics to device applications. Current challenges and future research directions for this field are also discussed.
Ultrasound velocity measurements of magnesium chromite spinel MgCr$_2$O$_4$ reveal elastic anomalies in the paramagnetic phase that are characterized as due to geometrical frustration. The temperature dependence of the tetragonal shear modulus $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ exhibits huge Curie-type softening, which should be the precursor to spin Jahn-Teller distortion in the antiferromagnetic phase. The trigonal shear modulus $C_{44}$ exhibits nonmonotonic temperature dependence with a characteristic minimum at $\sim$50 K, indicating a coupling of the lattice to dynamical molecular spin state. These res…
Tunability of the partially ordered double perovskite (PODP) and coexisting spin-glass phase in SrMn1-xWxO3 (x=0.20 to 0.40) have been studied using neutron powder diffraction (NPD), muon spin relaxation (MuSR), and magnetic susceptibility (X) measurements. Structural studies reveal that SrMn1-xWxO3 undergoes a quasi-continuous transformation from simple perovskite (Pm-3m) to PODP (P21/n) phase as x increases. Xdc(T) and Xac(T) measurements show a sharp cusp-like peak at a spin glass transition, Tg. The muon relaxation rate (λ) peaks at Tg following a critical growth, given by λ=λ(0).t-w [t=(T…
We report investigations on the ground state magnetic properties of intermetallic compound GdCu through dc magnetization measurements. GdCu undergoes first order martensitic type structural transition over a wide temperature window of coexisting phases. The high temperature cubic and the low temperature orthorhombic phases have different magnetic character and they show antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic orderings below 145 K and 45 K respectively. We observe clear signature of a glassy magnetic phase below the helimagnetic ordering temperature, which is marked by thermomagnetic irreversibilit…
The disordered antiferromagnet \pfn (\pfns) is investigated in a wide temperature range by combining Mössbauer spectroscopy and neutron diffraction experiments. It is demonstrated that the magnetic ground state is a {\it microscopic} coexistence of antiferromagnetic and a spin-glass orders. This speromagnet-like phase features frozen-in short-range fluctuations of the Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic moments that are transverse to the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic spin component.
For the frustrated two-dimensional $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model close to quantum phase transition we consider the singlet ground states retaining both translational and SU(2) symmetry. Besides usually discussed checkerboard, spin-liquid and stripe states an unconventional state with two coexisting long-range orders appears to be possible at sufficiently large damping of spin excitations. The problem is treated in the frames of self-consistent spherically symmetric approach.
We report a magnetization study of the Heusler compound Mn2PtGa that shows the existence of a magnetic-glass state. Mn2PtGa shows a first-order ferromagnetic (FM)/ferrimagnetic (FI) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in contrast to the martensitic structural transition observed in several Heusler alloys. The kinetic arrest of this first-order FM (FI) to AFM transition leads to the observed magnetic-glass behavior. We show that the strength of the applied magnetic field, which is the primary parameter to induce the magnetic-glass state, is also responsible for the stability of the supercoole…
The development of spin glass like state in a geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet is a matter of great debate. We investigated the effect of magnetic (Mn) and nonmagnetic (Ga) doping at the Cr site of the layered GF antiferromagnetic compound LiCrO2. 10% Ga doping at the Cr site does not invoke any metastability typical of a glassy magnetic state. However, similar amount of Mn doping certainly drives the system to a spin glass state which is particularly evident from the relaxation, magnetic memory and heat capacity studies. The onset of glassy state in 10% Mn doped sample is of reentrant typ…
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO$_2$ planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$ and we report the first quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. Th…
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
Long Range Antiferromagnetic Ordering in the S = 1/2 Ordered Rock Salt Oxide, Li5OsO6: Comparison with the Isoelectronicand Isostructural Spin Glass, Li4MgReO6
In the framework of the slave-boson approach to the $t-t'-t''-J$ model, it is found that for electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates, the staggered antiferromagnetic (AF) order coexists with superconducting (SC) order in a wide doping level ranged from underdoped to nearly optimal doping at the mean-field level. In the coexisting phase, it is revealed that the spin response is commensurate in a substantial frequency range below a crossover frequency $ω_{c}$ for all dopings considered, and it switches to the incommensurate structure when the frequency is higher than $ω_{c}$. This result is in agreem…
Multiferroics have found renewed interest in topological magnetism and for logic-in-memory applications. Among them, SrMnO$_{3}$, possessing strong magnetoelectric coupling is gaining attention for the design of coexisting magnetic and polar orders upon straining. Here we demonstrate antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in strained SMO thin films extracted from a new feature in the phase response of Spin Hall magnetoresistance, which has not been explored in earlier works, such as in magnetic insulators. We explain our findings with a model that incorporates magnetic anisotropy along [110] …
We numerically investigate the phase diagram of two-dimensional site-diluted coupled dimer systems in an external magnetic field. We show that this phase diagram is characterized by the presence of an extended Bose glass, not accessible to mean-field approximation, and stemming from the localization of two distinct species of bosonic quasiparticles appearing in the ground state. On the one hand, non-magnetic impurities doped into the dimer-singlet phase of a weakly coupled dimer system are known to free up local magnetic moments. The deviations of these local moments from full polarization alo…
We generalize the theory of Cooper pairing by spin excitations in the metallic antiferromagnetic state to include situations with electron and/or hole pockets. We show that Cooper pairing arises from transverse spin waves and from gapped longitudinal spin fluctuations of comparable strength. However, each of these interactions, projected on a particular symmetry of the superconducting gap, acts primarily within one type of pocket. We find a nodeless $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave state is supported primarily by the longitudinal fluctuations on the electron pockets, and both transverse and longitudinal flu…
We investigated the physical properties of $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ single crystals. The resistivity of $TlFe_{2-x}Se_2$ shows typical semiconductor behavior with an activation energy of 25 meV. DC susceptibility indicates an antiferromagnetic transition at about 450 K. Reentrant spin-glass (RSG) behavior was found at about 130 K through DC and AC magnetic measurements. The RSG behavior suggests the existence of a strong competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions due to Fe deficiencies. Strong electron-electron correlation may exist in this material and it is possi…
We report structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of layered perovskite materials LnBaCuFeO5 (Ln = La and Lu). LaBaCuFeO5 shows magnetic cluster glass behavior below 60 K owing to the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. Glassy dynamics of electric dipoles has also been observed in the vicinity of the magnetic glass transition temperature. The presence of significant coupling between spin and polar degrees of freedom results in the multiglass feature in LaBaCuFeO5. The LuBaCuFeO5 compound undergoes YBaCuFeO5 like commensurate to incommensurate antiferroma…
The symmetry requirement and the origin of magnetic orders coexisting with superconductivity have been strongly debated issues of iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Observation of C$_4$-symmetric antiferromagnetism in violation of the inter-band nesting condition of spin-density waves in superconducting ground state will require significant change in our understanding of the mechanism of FeSC. The superconducting material Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs, a bulk version of monolayer FeSC in contact with a perovskite layer with its magnetism (T$_N$ ~ 50 K) and superconductivity (T$_c$ ~ 37 K) coexisting at pa…
The inversion and volume effects on magnetism in a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and its gallium-substituted system, CoAl2-xGaxO4, were investigated. Magnetically frustrated Co2+ with spin S = 3/2 on the tetrahedral site formed a diamond lattice in CoAl2O4 located in the vicinity of the magnetic phase boundary between Neel and spin-spiral states. In the Ga-substituted system, the number of Co ions, the so-called inversion h dominating the octahedral site, increased with increasing x. From comprehensive crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal measurements, increments of…
The strongly correlated system Ho11B12 with boron sublattice Jahn-Teller instability and nanoscale electronic phase separation (dynamic charge stripes) was studied in detail by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry and heat capacity measurements at temperatures in the range 3-300 K. From the analysis of registered INS spectra, we determined parameters of the cubic crystal field at holmium sites, B4=- 0.333 meV and B6= -2.003 meV (in Stevens notations), with an unconventional large ratio B6/B4 pointing on the dominant role of conduction electrons in the formation of a crystal field p…
Superconductivity in layered copper-oxide compounds emerges when charge carriers are added to antiferromagnetically-ordered CuO2 layers. The carriers destroy the antiferromagnetic order, but strong spin fluctuations persist throughout the superconducting phase and are intimately linked to super-conductivity. Neutron scattering measurements of spin fluctuations in hole-doped copper oxides have revealed an unusual `hour-glass' feature in the momentum-resolved magnetic spectrum, present in a wide range of superconducting and non-superconducting materials. There is no widely-accepted explanation f…
The ground-state magnetic properties of hexagonal equiatomic alloy of nominal composition Mn_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}NiGe were investigated through dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The alloy undergoes first order martensitic transition below 140 K with simultaneous development of long range ferromagnetic ordering from the high temperature paramagnetic phase. The undoped compound MnNiGe has an antiferromagnetic ground state and it shows martensitic like structural instability well above room temperature. Fe doping at the Mn site not only brings down the martensitic transition temperature, …
We present 75As nuclear magnetic resonance data from measurements of a series of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ crystals with $0.00 \leq x \leq 0.075$ that reveals the coexistence of frozen antiferromagnetic domains and superconductivity for $0.060 \leq x \leq 0.071$. Although bulk probes reveal no long range antiferromagnetic order beyond $x = 0.06$, we find that the local spin dynamics reveal no qualitative change across this transition. The characteristic domain sizes vary by more than an order of magnitude, reaching a maximum variation at $x = 0.06$. This inhomogeneous glassy dynamics may …
We report on an investigation into the dynamics of the stripe phase of La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, a material recently shown to have an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum. A combination of magnetic susceptibility, muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements strongly suggest that the physics is determined by a disordered configuration of charge and spin stripes whose frustrated magnetic degrees of freedom are strongly dynamic at high temperature and which freeze out in a glassy manner as the temperature is lowered. Our results broadly confirm a recent theoretical prediction, but s…
In magnetic materials, spins sometimes freeze into spatially disordered glassy states. Glass forming liquids or structural glasses are found very often in three dimensions. However, in two dimensions(2D) it is believed that both spin glass and structural glass can never exist at a finite temperature because they are destroyed by thermal fluctuations. Using a large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we discover a quantum-mechanically driven 2D glass phase at finite temperatures. Our platform is an Ising spin model with a quantum transverse field on a frustrated triangular lattice. How the pr…
We report the results of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization measurements (T= 2-300 K) on the single crystals of a metallic kagome lattice, Tb3Ru4Al12, reported recently to undergo reentrant magnetism with the onset of long range antiferromagnetic order below (TN=) 22K. The magnetization data obtained on the crystal with the c-axis orientation along magnetic-field reveal spin-glass-like characteristics near 17 K (below TN). However, for the orientation along basal plane, such glassy anomalies are not observable above 2 K. In this respect, this compound behaves like a…
Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments in Fe-based superconductors, we study how the magnetic resonance in the superconducting state is affected by the simultaneous presence of either static or fluctuating magnetic orders using the random phase approximation. We find that for the underdoped materials with coexisting superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, spin rotational symmetry is explicitly broken at the ordering momentum $Q_1 = (π,0)$. Only the longitudinal susceptibility exhibits the resonance mode, whereas a spin-wave Goldstone mode develops in the transverse component.…
With angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the electronic structure of TaFe$_{1.23}$Te$_3$, which is a two-leg spin ladder compound with a novel antiferromagnetic ground state. Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface is observed, indicating sizable inter-ladder hopping, which would facilitate the in-plane ferromagnetic ordering through double exchange interactions. Moreover, an energy gap is not observed at the Fermi surface in the antiferromagnetic state. Instead, the shifts of various bands have been observed. Combining these observations with density-functional-theory calculatio…
We present the results of neutron diffraction studies on polycrystals of a metallic kagome lattice, Tb3Ru4Al12, reported recently to undergo reentrant magnetism, with the onset of long range antiferromagnetic order below (TN=) 22 K and spin-glass features below about 17 K. The present results reveal long-range antiferromagnetic order of an incommensurate type with the moments oriented along c-axis at all temperatures below TN. There are however notable changes in the T dependence of propagation vector along b-axis across 17 K. An observation of interest is that there is no decrease of intensit…

We show theoretically that spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the pyrochlore oxide Y2Mo2O7, which is free of quenched disorder, can exhibit a simultaneous glass transition, working as dynamical randomness to each other. The interplay of spins and orbitals is mediated by the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion that selects the choice of orbitals, which then generates variant spin exchange interactions ranging from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic ones. Our Monte Carlo simulations detect the power-law divergence of the relaxation times and the negative divergence of both the magnetic and dielec…
