Zero-field (ZF) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements have revealed static commensurate magnetic order of Fe moments in NdOFeAs below $T_{N} \sim 135$ K, with the ordered moment size nearly equal to that in LaOFeAs, and confirmed similar behavior in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. In single crystals of superconducting (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, $μ$SR spectra indicate static magnetism with incommensurate or short-ranged spin structure in $\sim$ 70 % of volume below $T_{N} \sim$ 80 K, coexisting with remaining volume which exhibits superfluid-response consistent with nodeless gap below $T_{c}\sim 30$ K.
Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out to investigate the iron magnetic order in undoped NdOFeAs. Antiferromagnetic order is observed below 141(6) K, which is in close proximity to the structural distortion observed in this material. The magnetic structure consists of chains of parallel spins that are arranged antiparallel between chains, which is the same in-plane spin arrangement as observed in all the other iron oxypnictide materials. Nearest-neighbor spins along the c-axis are antiparallel like LaOFeAs. The ordered moment is 0.25(7) muB, which is t…
We have performed muon spin relaxation and low field ac-susceptibility measurements in a series of high quality samples of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.08-0.24) as a function of temperature. Superconductivity is found to coexist with low temperature spin glass order up to the optimally doped region where the normal state pseudogap also closes. The systematic depletion of the superfluid density with the enhancement of aniferromagnetic correlations with underdoping indicates a competition between antiferromagnetic correlations and superconductivity.
Antiferromagnetic, Mott insulator, d-wave and gossamer superfluid phases are calculated for 2D square lattices from the extended Hubbard (t-J-U) model using the Gutzwiller projection method and renormalized mean field theory. Phase separation between antiferromagnetic and d-wave superfluid phases is found near half filling when the on-site repulsion exceeds $U\ga7.3t$, and coincides with a first order transition in the double occupancy. Phase separation is thus predicted for 2D optical lattices with ultracold Fermi atoms whereas it is inhibited in cuprates by Coulomb frustration which instead …
We examine antiferromagnetic and d-wave superfluid phases of cold fermionic atoms with repulsive interactions in a two-dimensional optical lattice combined with a harmonic trapping potential. For experimentally realistic parameters, the trapping potential leads to the coexistence of magnetic and superfluid ordered phases with the normal phase. We study the intriguing shell structures arising from the competition between the magnetic and superfluid order as a function of the filling fraction. In certain cases antiferromagnetism induce superfluidity by charge redistributions. We furthermore demo…
The critical temperature of an underdoped cuprate superconductor is limited by its phase stiffness $ρ$. In this Letter we argue that the dependence of $ρ$ on doping $x$ should be understood as a consequence of deleterious competition with antiferromagnetism at large electron densities, rather than as evidence for pairing of holes in the $x =0$ Mott insulator state. Our proposal is based on the observation that the correlation energy of a d-wave superconductor increases in magnitude at finite pairing wavevector when antiferromagnetic fluctuations are strong.
We report measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $Δλ$(T) in single crystals of ErNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C down to $\sim$0.1 K using a tunnel-diode based, self-inductive technique at 21 MHz. We observe four features: (1) a slight dip in $Δλ$(T) at the N$\acute{e}$el temperature $T_{N}$ = 6.0 K, (2) a peak at $T_{WFM}$ = 2.3 K, where a weak ferromagnetic component sets in, (3) another maximum at 0.45 K, and (4) a final broad drop down to 0.1 K. Converting to superfluid density $ρ_{s}$, we see that the antiferromagnetic order at 6 K only slightly depresses superconductivity. We seek to e…
The $t-J$ Hamiltonian is studied in a mean-field approximation by taking into account antiferromagnetic and d-wave pairing correlations. Considering the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, the weaknesses of a mean-field approximation and the limitation of the $t-J$ model near half-filling, we give a new interpretation to the slave boson mean-field theory of the $t-J$ model. We argue that due to phase coherence-breaking antiferromagnetic fluctuations and quantum fluctuations, superconducting long-range order does not appear strictly in two dimensions. $T_{c}$ resulting from interlayer p…
We utilize the Hubbard model to demonstrate that doping of the antiferromagnetic parent compounds of cuprate superconductors stabilizes a spin liquid state. Superconductivity in such a state emerges due to the spin-orbit coupling between charge current and superfluidity of spinon condensate, resulting in a chiral relation between the order parameter phase gradient and supercurrent. We propose simple experimental tests for the presented mechanism.
While the pseudogap dominates the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates, connecting the antiferromagnetic parent insulator at low doping to the strange metal at higher doping, its origin and relation to superconductivity remains unknown. In order to proceed, a complete understanding of how the single hole - initially localized in the Mott state - becomes mobile and ultimately evolves into a coherent quasiparticle at the end of the superconducting dome is required. In order to affect this development, we examine recent transport and spectroscopic studies of hole-doped cuprates across their phase…
We theoretically investigate effects of quantum fluctuations on superfluid spin transport through easy-plane quantum antiferromagnetic spin chains in the large-spin limit. Quantum fluctuations give rise to decaying of spin supercurrent by unwinding the magnetic order parameter within the easy plane, which is referred to as phase slips. We show that the topological term in the nonlinear sigma model for the spin chains qualitatively differentiates decaying rate of the spin supercurrent between integer spin and half-odd-integer spin chains. An experimental setup for a magnetoelectric circuit is p…
The zero temperature value of the in-plane London penetration depth, $λ_{ab}(0)$, has been measured in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ as a function of the Co concentration, $x$, across both the underdoped and overdoped superconducting regions of the phase diagram. For $x\gtrsim0.047$, $λ_{ab}(0)$ has been found to have values between 120 $\pm$ 50~nm and 300 $\pm$ 50~nm. A pronounced increase in $λ_{ab}(0)$, to a value as high as 950 $\pm$ 50~nm, has been observed for $x\lesssim0.047$, corresponding to the region of the phase diagram where the itinerant antiferromagnetic and …
When a second-order magnetic phase transition is tuned to zero temperature by a non-thermal parameter, quantum fluctuations are critically enhanced, often leading to the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. In these `quantum critical' superconductors it has been widely reported that the normal-state properties above the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ often exhibit anomalous non-Fermi liquid behaviors and enhanced electron correlations. However, the effect of these strong critical fluctuations on the superconducting condensate below $T_c$ is less well established. Here w…
We show that, in antiferromagnetic superconductors, the optical spectral weight transferred to low frequencies below the superconducting transition temperature originates from energies that can be much larger than twice the superconducting gap $Δ$. This contrasts to non-magnetic superconductors, where the optical spectrum is suppressed only for frequencies below $2Δ$. In particular, we demonstrate that the superfluid condensate of the magnetically ordered superconductor is not only due to states of the magnetically reconstructed Fermi surface, but is enhanced by transfer of spectral weight fro…
We study the three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory of a CP$^1$ spinon (Schwinger boson) field and a Higgs field. It is a bosonic $t$-$J$ model in slave-particle representation, describing the antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg spin model with doped bosonic holes expressed by the Higgs field. The spinon coupling term of the action favors AF long-range order, whereas the holon hopping term in the ferromagnetic channel favors Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of holons. We investigate the phase structure by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and study an interplay of AF order and BEC of holes. …
Transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements performed on two samples of LiFeAs demonstrate that the superfluid stiffness of the superconducting condensate in relation to its superconducting transition temperature is enhanced compared to other pnictide superconductors. Evidence is seen for a field-induced magnetic state in a sample with a significantly suppressed superconducting transition temperature. The results in this system highlight the role of direct Fe-Fe interactions in frustrating pairing mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations and suggest that, in common with other pnictide s…
We declare the observation of spin superfluid state in Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) at room temperature. It is similar to a Homogeneous Precessing State (HPD), observed earlier in antiferromagnetic superfluid $^3$He-B. The formation of this state explains by the repulsive interaction between magnons, which is required as a prior condition for the spin superfluidity. It establishes an energy gap, which stabilizes the long range superfluid transport of magnetization and determines the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length. This discovery paves a way to many quantum applications of supermagnonics at room…
Spin-orbit coupling related new physics and quantum magnetism are two branches of great interest both in condensed matter physics and in cold atomic physics. With the introduction of a Rashba-like SOC into a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in a two-dimensional bipartite optical square lattice, we find that the ground state of the BEC always favors a coherent condensate than a fragmented condensate and always exhibits very large degeneracy, and most importantly, an antiferromagnetic order of quantum nature emerges when parameters satisfy certain condition. This provides an ideal platform …
The projected SO(5) (pSO(5)) Hamiltonian incorporates the quantum spin and superconducting fluctuations of underdoped cuprates in terms of four bosons moving on a coarse grained lattice. A simple mean field approximation can explain some key feautures of the experimental phase diagram: (i) The Mott transition between antiferromagnet and superconductor, (ii) The increase of T_c and superfluid stiffness with hole concentration x and (iii) The increase of antiferromagnetic resonance energy as sqrt{x-x_c} in the superconducting phase. We apply this theory to explain the ``two gaps'' problem found …
We study the two-band effects on ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices by means of dynamical mean-field theory. We find that at half-filling the atomic-density-wave (ADW) state emerges owing to the two-band effects in the attractive interaction region, while the antiferromagnetic state appears in the repulsive interaction region. As the orbital splitting is increased, the quantum phase transitions from the ADW state to the superfluid state and from the antiferromagnetic state to the metallic state occur in respective regions. Systematically changing the orbital splitting and the intera…
We present a low-energy muon-spin-rotation study of the magnetic and superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 trilayer and bilayer heterostructures. By determining the magnetic-field profiles throughout these structures we show that a finite superfluid density can be induced in otherwise semiconducting PrBa2Cu3O7 layers when juxtaposed to YBa2Cu3O7 "electrodes" while the intrinsic antiferromagnetic order is unaffected.
We report measurements of the microwave surface impedance of the borocarbide family of superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln=Y, Er, Tm, Ho). The experiments enable direct measurements of the superfluid density, and are particularly sensitive to the influence of magnetic pairbreaking. In HoNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is clearly observed at zero field, and leads to a drastic reduction of the superfluid density, which recovers at lower temperatures. In ErNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is not seen in zero field data. Magnetic effects are responsible for anomalies in the low temperature…
We investigate the influence of critical spin fluctuations on electromagnetic responses in the odd-frequency superconductivity. It is shown that the Meissner kernel of the odd-frequency superconductivity is strongly reduced by the critical spin fluctuation or the massless spin wave mode in the antiferromagnetic phase. These results imply that the superfluid density is reduced, and the London penetration depth is lengthened for the odd-frequency pairing. It is also shown that the zero field Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing is spontaneously realized both for even- and odd-frequency in th…
Due to their proximity to an antiferromagnetic phase and to the mysterious pseudogap, underdoped cuprates have attracted great interest in the high Tc community for many years. A central issue concerns the role of quantum and thermal fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter. The evolution of superfluid density ns with temperature and doping is a powerful probe of this physics. Here, we report superfluid density measurements on underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) films at much lower dopings than have been achieved previously, and with excellent control on doping level -…
Based on experimental results and our previous theoretical work, a microscopic theory of high temperature superconductivity is conjectured. In this conjecture, superconducting and antiferromagnetic long-range orders are driven by interlayer coupling. Strictly in two dimensions, the microscopic Hubbard model has an (resonating valence bond) insulator-to-metal transition at $x=x_{c}$ near optimal doping for zero temperature, leading to a quantum critical point, and one of the crossover lines is given by the pseudogap temperature $T^{*}$. We argue that various singular and non-Fermi liquid proper…
The renormalization factor, dubbed ``quasiparticle charge'' Z_e, of the coupling between the supercurrent and quasiparticles was analyzed in the context of high temperature cuprates in a recent paper by Ioffe and Millis. They observed that Z_e in cuprates deviates from the BCS value (Z_e=1), which was interpreted as the proximity effect near a Mott insulator. Here we show that the deviation from Z_e=1 can occur, in general, even in the absence of quasiparticle interactions, when the superconducting order coexists with another order parameter with the same internal symmetry. As an example, we c…
We study collective modes and superfluidity of spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions in an optical lattice based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation derived from the spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model. Specifically, we examine the stability of supercurrents in the polar phase in the vicinity of the Mott insulating phase with even filling factors. Solving the linearized TDGL equation, we obtain gapless spin-nematic modes and gapful spin-wave modes in the polar phase that arise due to the breaking of $S^2$ symmetry in spin space. Supercurrents exhibit dynamical instabilities…
In usual superconductors the carriers form Cooper pairs that have zero total momentum meaning that the superfluid density is homogeneous. We know for decades that it is a priori possible to observe at high fields the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinikov (FFLO) state in which the superfluid density exhibits a field dependent modulation. The search for such inhomogeneous condensates in materials is the subject of tremendous excitement especially after the discovery of a promising high-field superconducting (HFSC) phase in CeCoIn$_5$. However, subsequent neutron and NMR experiments contradicted the FFL…
In this paper the phase diagram of high $T_{c}$ cuprates is {\it qualitatively} studied in the context of competing orders: antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity and $d$-density wave. {\it Local} correlation functions are estimated from a mean-field solution of the $t-J$ Hamiltonian. With decreasing doping the superconducting mean-field $T^{MF}_{c}$ and order parameter $d$ begin to decrease below some characteristic doping $x_{c} \simeq 0.2$ where short-range antiferromagnetic correlations begin to develop. {\it Dynamical} properties that involve the energy spectrum, such as the normal …
We present a theory for the large suppression of the superfluid-density, $ρ_s$, in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ in the vicinity of a putative spin-density wave quantum critical point at a P-doping, $x=x_{c}$. We argue that the transition becomes weakly first-order in the vicinity of $x_{c}$, and disorder induces puddles of superconducting and antiferromagnetic regions at short length-scales; thus the system becomes an electronic micro-emulsion. We propose that frustrated Josephson couplings between the superconducting grains suppress $ρ_s$. In addition, the presence of `normal' quasiparticles…
We present a theoretical model to show that the transition from an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase to the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductivity occurs through a robust companion of a finite momentum pairing between $({\bf k},\uparrow)$ and $(-{\bf k}-{\bf Q},\downarrow)$ electrons, namely pair-density wave (PDW) state, where ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$ is the AFM wavevector. Interestingly, the spatial structure of the PDW is constrained to be a $p+ip$-wave symmetry, which follows $p_{\bf k}=p_{-{\bf k}-{\bf Q}}$ under fermions exchange in cuprates, dictating a spin-singlet pairing. Furthermore, the PDW state…
An intrinsic physical mechanism, based on the doping evolution of the Fermi surface (FS), is explored to reconcile the contradictory experimental results on the superconducting (SC) pairing symmetry in electron-doped cuprates. It is argued that the FS pocket around $(π/2,π/2)$ has not yet formed until doping reaches about the optimal value. Therefore, in the underdoped regime, even if the SC order parameter is $d$ wave which vanishes along the line $k_x=k_y$, the quasiparticle excitation gap is still finite and looks s-wave-like due to the absence of the FS across that line. This makes it poss…
The temperature dependences of the plasma frequency, superfluid density and London penetration depth were determined from terahertz spectra of conductivity and dielectric permittivity of BaFe$_{1.91}$Ni$_{0.09}$As$_{2}$ film with critical temperature $T_c=19.6$~K. Part of experimental data were analyzed within a simple three-band Eliashberg model where the mechanism of superconducting coupling is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, whose characteristic energy $Ω_{0}$ scales with $T_{c}$ according to the empirical law $Ω_{0} = 4.65k_{B}T_{c}$, and with a total electron-boson coupli…
The conventional spin density wave (SDW) phase (Overhauser, 1962), as found in antiferromagnetic metal for example (Fawcett 1988), can be described as a condensate of particle-hole pairs with zero angular momentum, $\ell=0$, analogous to a condensate of particle-particle pairs in conventional superconductors. While many unconventional superconductors with Cooper pairs of finite $\ell$ have been discovered, their counterparts, density waves with non-zero angular momenta, have only been hypothesized in two-dimensional electron systems (Nayak, 2000). Using an unbiased functional renormalization g…
We develop a minimal non-BCS model for the CuO$_2$ planes with the on-site Hilbert space reduced to only three effective valence centers CuO$_4$ with different charge, conventional spin, and orbital symmetry, combined in a charge triplet. Using the S=1 pseudospin algebra we introduce an effective spin-pseudospin Hamiltonian. To illustrate the possibilities of the molecular field approximation we start with the analysis of the atomic and the "large negative-$U$" limits of the model in comparison with the Bethe cluster approximation, classical and quantum Monte Carlo methods. Both limiting syste…
