We show that, in antiferromagnetic superconductors, the optical spectral weight transferred to low frequencies below the superconducting transition temperature originates from energies that can be much larger than twice the superconducting gap $Δ$. This contrasts to non-magnetic superconductors, where the optical spectrum is suppressed only for frequencies below $2Δ$. In particular, we demonstrate that the superfluid condensate of the magnetically ordered superconductor is not only due to states of the magnetically reconstructed Fermi surface, but is enhanced by transfer of spectral weight from the mid infrared peak generated by the spin density wave gap. We apply our results to the iron arsenide superconductors, addressing the decrease of the zero-temperature superfluid density in the doping regime where magnetism coexists with unconventional superconductivity.
We report the observation of a magnetic-field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped La(2-x)SrxCuO4 with x=0.144. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron scattering. Our results allow us to constrain the location of a quantum critical point on the phase diagram.
The thermodynamical phenomenological theory of magnetically active superconducting materials and magnetic-superconducting heterostructures is presented. The materials may exhibit arbitrarily strong anisotropy, parametric or structural. Exact anisotropic similarity transformations are found for both the continuum and layered hybrid systems.
We report the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in a semimetallic magnetic material CeTe$_{1.82}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{SC}$ = 2.7 K (well below the magnetic ordering temperatures) under pressure ($>$ 2 kbar) is remarkably high, considering the relatively low carrier density due to a charge-density-wave transition associated with lattice modulation. The coexisting magnetic structure of a mixed ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism can provide a clue for this high $T_{SC}$. We discuss a theoretical model for its possible pairing symmetry and pairing mecha…
Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on the new layered cobalt oxide superconductor Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O and its parent, non-superconducting compounds, have revealed unconventional nature of superconductivity through: (1) a small superfluid energy which implies a surprisingly high effective mass of the charge carriers, approximately 100 times the bare electron mass; (2) the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ scaling with the superfluid energy following the correlations found in high-$T_{c}$ cuprate and some other two-dimensional superconductors; (3) an anisotro…
We report the first photoemission study of Fe1+xTe - the host compound of the newly discovered iron-chalcogenide superconductors. Our results reveal a pair of nearly electron- hole compensated Fermi pockets, strong Fermi velocity renormalization and an absence of a spin-density-wave gap. A shadow hole pocket is observed at the "X"-point of the Brillouin zone which is consistent with a long-range ordered magneto-structural groundstate. No signature of Fermi surface nesting instability associated with Q= pi(1/2, 1/2) is observed. Our results collectively reveal that the Fe1+xTe series is dramati…
We present a general theory of multiorbital spin waves in magnetically ordered metallic systems. Motivated by the itinerant magnetism of iron-based superconductors, we compare the magnetic excitations for two different scenarios: when the magnetic order either sets in on the on-site orbital level; or when it appears as an electron-hole pairing between different bands of electron and hole character. As an example we treat the two-orbital model for iron-based superconductors. For small magnetic moments the spin excitations look similar in both scenarios. Going to larger interactions and larger m…
On the basis of exact solutions to the London equation the magnetic moment of a type II superconductor filament surrounded by a soft-magnet environment is calculated and the procedure of extracting the superconductor contribution from magnetic measurements is suggested. Comparison of theoretical results with experiments on MgB_2/Fe wires allows estimation of the value of critical current for the first magnetic flux penetration.
We present a detailed review of scaling behavior in the magnetically underdoped cuprate superconductors (hole dopings less than 0.20) and show that it reflects the presence of two coupled components throughout this doping regime: a non-Landau Fermi liquid and a spin liquid whose behavior maps onto the theoretical Monte Carlo calculations of the 2D Heisenberg model of localized Cu spins for most of its temperature domain. We use this mapping to extract the doping dependence of the strength, $f(x)$ of the spin liquid component and the effective interaction, J_eff(x) between the remnant localized…
We examine the depinning transitions and the temperature versus driving force phase diagram for magnetically interacting pancake vortices in layered superconductors. For strong disorder the initial depinning is plastic followed by a sharp hysteretic transition to a 3D ordered state for increasing driving force. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for driven anisotropic charge density wave systems. We also show that a temperature induced peak effect in the critical current occurs due to the onset of plasticity between the layers.
We have studied the effect of perpendicular magnetic fields and temperatures on the nonlinear electronic transport in amorphous Ta superconducting thin films. The films exhibit a magnetic field induced metallic behavior intervening the superconductor-insulator transition in the zero temperature limit. We show that the nonlinear transport in the superconducting and metallic phase is of non-thermal origin and accompanies an extraordinarily long voltage response time.
The optical conductivity of the heavy fermions UPd2Al3 and UPt3 has been measured in the frequency range from 10 GHz to 1.2 THz (0.04 meV to 5 meV) at temperatures 1 K < T < 300 K. In both compounds a well pronounced pseudogap of less than a meV develops in the optical response at low temperatures; we relate this to the antiferromagnetic ordering. From the energy dependence of the effective electronic mass and scattering rate we derive the energies essential for the heavy quasiparticle. We find that the enhancement of the mass mainly occurs below the energy which is related to magnetic correla…
Within the Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we predict two novel mechanisms of vortex-antivortex nucleation in a magnetically nanostructured superconductor. Although counterintuitive, nucleation of vortex-antivortex pairs can be activated in a superconducting (SC) film covered by arrays of submicron ferromagnets (FMs) when exposed to an external homogeneous magnetic field. In another scenario, we predict the thermal induction of vortex-antivortex configurations in SC/FM samples. This phenomenon leads to a new type of Little-Parks oscillations of the FM magnetization-temperature phase boundary of the…
In the framework of the London approximation the magnetic flux penetration into a type-II superconductor filament surrounded by a soft-magnet sheath and exposed to a transverse external magnetic field is studied. The lower transverse critical field as well as the critical field and the critical current of the first vortex nucleation at the superconductor/magnet interface are calculated on the basis of an exact solution for a vortex of arbitrary plane configuration. The Bean-Livingston barrier against the vortex nucleation is shown to strongly depend on the magnet sheath parameters.
Recent experimental developments in the iron pnictides have unambiguously demonstrated the existence of in-plane electronic anisotropy in the absence of the long-range magnetic order. Such anisotropy can arise from orbital ordering, which is described by an energy splitting between the two otherwise degenerate $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. By including this phenomenological orbital order into a five-orbital Hubbard model, we obtain the mean-field solutions where the magnetic order is determined self-consistently. Despite sensitivity of the resulting states to the input parameters, we find th…
We study the interaction between a one dimensional magnetic nanostructure and a thin film superconductor. It is shown that different magnetic distributions produce characteristic magnetic field signatures. Moreover, the magnetic structure can induce a weak link in the superconducting film, or be positioned directly above a predefined nonsuperconducting weak link. We estimate the magnetic flux associated with such a structure, and discuss a general expression for the energy calculated within the London model.
We study the magnetization of a cylindrical type-II superconductor filament covered by a coaxial soft-magnet sheath and exposed to an applied transverse magnetic field. Examining penetration of magnetic flux into the superconductor core of the filament on the basis of the Bean model of the critical state, we find that the presence of a non-hysteretic magnetic sheath can strongly enhance the field of full penetration of magnetic flux. The average magnetization of the superconductor/magnet heterostructure under consideration and hysteresis AC losses in the core of the filament are calculated as …
In this paper, we propose a quantum field theoretical renormalization group approach to the vortex dynamics of magnetically coupled layered superconductors, to supplement our earlier investigations on the Josephson-coupled case. We construct a two-dimensional multi-layer sine-Gordon type model which we map onto a gas of topological excitations. With a special choice of the mass matrix for our field theoretical model, vortex dominated properties of magnetically coupled layered superconductors can be described. The well known interaction potentials of fractional flux vortices are consistently ob…
We show that the complicated band reconstruction near Fermi surfaces in the magnetically ordered state of iron-pnictides observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies (ARPES) can be understood in a meanfield level if the \emph{intrinsic unit cell doubling} due to As atoms is properly considered as shown in the recently constructed S$_{4}$ microscopic effective model. The (0,$π$) or ($π$,0) col-linear antiferromagnetic (C-AFM) order does not open gaps between two points at Fermi surfaces linked by the ordered wave vector but forces a band reconstruction involving four points in unfold…
Borocarbide compounds with the formula RNi2B2C show interesting superconducting and magnetic properties and the coexistence of the two phenomena. BCS theory is extended to systems with underlying commensurate magnetic order. In the case of helical phases the technique may be extended to any Q-vector and there exists a well defined limit for incommensurate values. The way magnetic order influences superconductivity depends crucially on the details of both the magnetic structure and the electron bands, but some qualitative criteria may be given. As an example we give a brief analysis of the comp…
We present a theory of superconductivity in presence of a general magnetic structure in a form suitable for the description of complex magnetic phases encountered in borocarbides. The theory, complemented with some details of the band structure and with the magnetic phase diagram, may explain the nearly reentrant behaviour and the anisotropy of the upper critical field of HoNi2B2C. The onset of the helical magnetic order depresses superconductivity via the reduction of the interaction between phonons and electrons caused by the formation of magnetic Bloch states. At mean field level, no additi…
The recently discovered ruthenocuprates have attracted great interest because of the microscopic coexistence of superconducting and ferromagnetic order. Typically, these materials become magnetically ordered at temperatures around 125-145 K and superconductivity sets in between 15 and 50 K. While superconductivity arises in the CuO2 layers the RuO2 layers in between order magnetically. In this paper we summarize some of the crystallographic, magnetic and superconducting properties of the ruthenocuprates, as obtained from investigations on polycrystalline samples as well as single crystals.
A strong superconducting diode effect (SDE) is revealed in a thin superconducting film periodically nanostructured with magnetic dots. The SDE is caused by the current-activated dissipation mitigated by vortex-antivortex pairs (VAPs), which periodically nucleate under the dots, move and annihilate in the superconductor - eventually driving the system to the high-resistive state. Inversing the polarity of the applied current destimulates the nucleation of VAPs, the system remains superconducting up to far larger currents, leading to the pronounced diodic response. Our dissipative Ginzburg-Landa…
We use two recently proposed methods to calculate exactly the spectrum of two spin-${1\over 2}$ charge carriers moving in a ferromagnetic background, at zero temperature, for three types of models. By comparing the low-energy states in both the one-carrier and the two-carrier sectors, we analyze whether complex models with multiple sublattices can be accurately described by simpler Hamiltonians, such as one-band models. We find that while this is possible in the one-particle sector, the magnon-mediated interactions which are key to properly describe the two-carrier states of the complex model …
Under the assumption that the superconducting state belongs to a single irreducible representation of lattice symmetry, we argue that the pairing symmetry in all measured iron-based superconductors is universally consistent with the A_{1g} s-wave. The robust s-wave pairing throughout the different families of iron-based superconductors at different doping regions signals two fundamental principles behind high T_c superconducting mechanisms: (1) the correspondence principle: the short range magnetic exchange interactions and the Fermi surfaces act collaboratively to achieve high T_c superconduc…
Two iron-chalcogenide superconductors Li(x)[C5H5N](y)Fe(2-z)Se2 and Cs(x)Fe(2-z)Se2 in the as-prepared and annealed state have been investigated by means of the Moessbauer spectroscopy versus temperature. Multi-component spectra are obtained. One can see a non-magnetic component due to iron located in the unperturbed Fe-Se sheets responsible for superconductivity. Remaining components are magnetically ordered even at room temperature. There is some magnetically ordered iron in Fe-Se sheets perturbed by presence of the iron vacancies. Additionally, one can see iron dispersed between sheets in t…
We study the superconducting properties of the thin film BCS superconductor proximity coupled to a magnetically doped topological insulator(TI). Using the mean field theory, we show that Fulde-Ferrell(FF) pairing can be induced in the conventional superconductor by having inverse proximity effect(IPE). This occurs when the IPE of the TI to the superconductor is large enough that the normal band of the superconductor possesses a proximity induced spin-orbit coupling and magnetization. We find that the energetics of the different pairings are dependent on the coupling strength between the TI and…
As a promising candidate system to realize topological superconductivity, the system of a 3D topological insulator (TI) grown on top of the s-wave superconductor has been extensively studied. To access the topological superconductivity experimentally, the 3D TI sample must be thin enough to allow for Cooper pair tunneling to the exposed surface of TI. The use of magnetically ordered dopants to break time-reversal symmetry may allow the surface of a TI to host Majorana fermion, which are believed to be a signature of topological superconductivity. In this work, we study a magnetically-doped thi…
A Heisenberg model over the square lattice recently introduced by Si and Abrahams to describe local-moment magnetism in the new class of Fe-As high-Tc superconductors is analyzed in the classical limit and on a small cluster by exact diagonalization. In the case of spin-1 iron atoms, large enough Heisenberg exchange interactions between neighboring spin-1/2 moments on different iron 3d orbitals that frustrate true magnetic order lead to hidden magnetic order that violates Hund's rule. It accounts for the low ordered magnetic moment observed by elastic neutron diffraction in an undoped parent c…

Based on a two-dimensional model of coupled two-leg spin ladders, we derive a unified picture of recent neutron scattering data of stripe-ordered La_(15/8)Ba_(1/8)CuO_4, namely of the low-energy magnons around the superstructure satellites and of the triplon excitations at higher energies. The resonance peak at the antiferromagnetic wave vector Q_AF in the stripe-ordered phase corresponds to a saddle point in the dispersion of the magnetic excitations. Quantitative agreement with the neutron data is obtained for J= 130-160 meV and J_cyc/J = 0.2-0.25.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to show that the spin waves in the iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1.05}$Te display novel dispersion clearly different from those in the related iron pnictide systems. By fitting the spin waves to a Heisenberg Hamiltonian, we extract magnetic exchange couplings that are dramatically different from both predictions by density functional calculations and measurements on the iron pnictide CaFe$_2$As$_2$. While the nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Fe$_{1.05}$Te are quite different, their next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings are similar. These…
A theory of superconductivity in the iron-based materials requires an understanding of the phase diagram of the normal state. In these compounds, superconductivity emerges when stripe spin density wave (SDW) order is suppressed by doping, pressure or atomic disorder. This magnetic order is often pre-empted by nematic order, whose origin is yet to be resolved. One scenario is that nematic order is driven by orbital ordering of the iron 3d-electrons that triggers stripe SDW order. Another is that magnetic interactions produce a spin-nematic phase, which then induces orbital order. In this articl…
Within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory, we demonstrate the enhancement of superconductivity in a superconducting film, when nanostructured by a lattice of magnetic particles. Arrays of out-of-plane magnetized dots (MDs) extend the critical magnetic field and critical current the sample can sustain, due to the interaction of the vortex-antivortex pairs and surrounding supercurrents induced by the dots and the external flux lines. Depending on the stability of the vortex-antivortex lattice, a peak in the Hext-T boundary is found for applied integer and rational matching fields, which…
The electron paramagnetic resonance study for an organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$ reveals that superconductivity coexists uniformly with the charge ordered state in one material. In the charge ordered state, the interplane spin exchange is gapped, while the in-plane conductivity is not significantly modified. This anisotropic behavior is explained by the exotic charge ordered state, in which molecular-site selective carrier localization coexists with conducting carriers on other molecules. Relationship between superconductivity an…
In the stripe-ordered state of a strongly-correlated two-dimensional electronic system, under a set of special circumstances, the superconducting condensate, like the magnetic order, can occur at a non-zero wave-vector corresponding to a spatial period double that of the charge order. In this case, the Josephson coupling between near neighbor planes, especially in a crystal with the special structure of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4, vanishes identically. We propose that this is the underlying cause of the dynamical decoupling of the layers recently observed in transport measurements at x=1/8.
A prevailing description of the stripe phase in underdoped cuprate superconductors is that the charge carriers (holes) phase segregate on a microscopic scale into hole rich and hole poor regions. We report resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements of stripe-ordered La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ at the Cu $L$ and O $K$ absorption edges that identify an additional feature of stripe order. Analysis of the energy dependence of the scattering intensity reveals that the dominant signature of the stripe order is a spatial modulation in the energies of Cu 3d and O 2p states rather tha…
We revisit a venerable question: what is the nature of the ordering in a superconductor? We find that the answer is properly that the superconducting state exhibits topological order in the sense of Wen, i.e. that while it lacks a local order parameter, it is sensitive to the global topology of the underlying manifold and exhibits an associated fractionalization of quantum numbers. We show that this perspective unifies a number of previous observations on superconductors and their low lying excitations and that this complex can be elegantly summarized in a purely topological action of the ``$B…
Specific heat, resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, linear thermal expansion (LTE), and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction investigations of single crystals Fe1+yTe (0.06 < y < 0.15) reveal a splitting of a single, first-order transition for y < 0.11 into two transitions for y > 0.12. Most strikingly, all measurements on identical samples Fe1.13Te consistently indicate that, upon cooling, the magnetic transition at T_N precedes the first-order structural transition at a lower temperature T_s. The structural transition in turn coincides with a change in the character of the m…
The electronic nematic state without magnetization emerges in various strongly correlated metals such as Fe-based and cuprate superconductors. To understand this universal phenomenon, we focus on the nematic state in Ti-oxypnictide BaTi2(As,Sb)2O, which is expressed as the three-dimensional 10-orbital Hubbard model. The antiferromagnetic fluctuations are caused by the Fermi surface nesting. Interestingly, we find the spin-fluctuation-driven orbital order due to the strong orbital-spin interference, which is described by the Aslamazov-Larkin vertex correction (AL-VC). The predicted intra-unit-c…
The Landau-Khalatnikov time-dependent equation is applied to describe the crystallization process of the ordered vortex lattice in high temperature superconductors after a sudden application of a magnetic field. Dynamic coexistence of a stable ordered phase and an unstable disordered phase, with a sharp interface between them, is demonstrated. The transformation to the equilibrium ordered state proceeds by movement of this interface from the sample center toward its edge. The theoretical analysis dictates specific conditions for the creation of a propagating interface, and provides the time sc…
Comprehensive measurements of dc and ac susceptibility, dc resistance, magnetoresistance, Hall resistivity, and microwave absorption and dispersion in fields up to 8 T have been carried out on RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 with the aim to establish the properties of RuO_2 and CuO_2 planes. At ~130 K, where the magnetic order develops in the RuO_2 planes, one observes a change in the slope of dc resistance, change in the sign of magnetoresistance, and the appearance of an extraordinary Hall effect. These features indicate that the RuO_2 planes are conducting. A detailed analysis of the ac susceptibility and …
A microscopic model for the FeAs plane in the newly discovered Iron-based superconductors is proposed with the emphasis on the role of the orbital degeneracy between the Fe $3d_{xz}$ and $3d_{yz}$ orbital in the crystal field environment. The model predicts commensurate antiferromagnetic ordered ground state for the parent compounds and a d-wave superconducting ground state at finite doping. Inter-orbital couplings plays an interesting role in enhancing both orders. Correlated variational wave functions are proposed for both ordered phases.
Shubnikov-De Haas effect (SdH) effect and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) were observed in the organic superconductor: $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$. In contrast to its isostructural compound $κ-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$, SdH oscillations, for fields perpendicular to the conducting planes, reveal three Fermi Surface (FS) closed orbits $α$, $β$, and $γ$ whose cross sectional areas are 19.8 %, 99.9 %, and 2.4 % of the first Brillouin zone, respectively. The conduction electron effective masses were found to be: $μ_α = (4.7 \pm 0.2)$ m$_e$, $μ_β = (8.0 \pm 1.0)$ m$_e$, and $μ_γ = (2.0 \…
We study a four band model for iron-based superconductors within local density approximation + dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT). This successfully reproduces the results of models which take As p degrees of freedom explicitly into account and has several physical advantages over the standard five d-band model. Our findings reveal that the new superconductors are more strongly correlated than their single-particle properties suggest. Two-particle correlation functions unveil the dichotomy between local and ordered magnetic moments in these systems, calling for further experiments to bette…
We report the magnetic field dependence of the low temperature specific heat of single crystals of the first Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. The low temperature specific heat and the magnetic phase diagram inferred from specific heat, resistivity and magnetisation provide compelling evidence of a doublet ground state and hence superconductivity mediated by quadrupolar fluctuations. This establishes PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ as a very strong contender of superconductive pairing that is neither electron-phonon nor magnetically mediated.
Superconductivity and magnetic order strongly compete in many conventional superconductors, at least partly because both tend to gap the Fermi surface. In magnetically-ordered conventional superconductors, the competition between these cooperative phenomena leads to anomalies at magnetic and superconducting phase boundaries. Here we reveal that in Pr2Pt3Ge5 superconducting and multiple magnetic order are intertwined within the same HT-phase space, but remain completely decoupled. Our thermal conductivity measurements provide evidence for normal electrons in the superconducting phase from which…
We consider flux penetration to a 2D superconducting cylinder. We show that in the low field limit the kinetics is deterministic. In the strong field limit the dynamics becomes stochastic. Surprisingly the inhomogeneity in the cylinder reduces the level of stochasticity because of the predominance of Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices.
We report detailed measurements of the temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1 in the stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (x = 0.10 and 0.15) superconductors. It is found that Hc1(T) of the samples increase with decreasing temperature and show an negative curvature below Tc. The penetration depth λ(T) estimated from Hc1(T) data satisfies a linear temperature dependence behavior below Tc/2, which is consistent with that in a superconductor with d-wave symmetry of the energy gap and the upward trend in Hc1(T) may be due to the cooperation of the hole and election pockets arising fr…
The parent compounds of iron-based superconductors are magnetically-ordered bad metals, with superconductivity appearing near a putative magnetic quantum critical point. The presence of both Hubbard repulsion and Hund's coupling leads to rich physics in these multiorbital systems, and motivated descriptions of magnetism in terms of itinerant electrons or localized spins. The NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As series consists of magnetically-ordered bad metal ($x=0$), superconducting ($x\approx0.02$) and magnetically-ordered semiconducing/insulating ($x\approx0.5$) phases, providing a platform to investigate…
The electronic ground state in high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates where the superconducting state is suppressed by Ni substitution has been investigated in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Ni$_y$O$_4$ from the specific heat and muon spin relaxation measurements. It has been found that the ground state changes from a magnetically ordered state with the strong hole-trapping by Ni to a metallic state with the Kondo effect of Ni with increasing hole-concentration. Moreover, the analysis of the results has revealed that a phase separation into the magnetically ordered phase and the metallic phase occurs around the…
We present a study of the upper critical field, H$_{c2}$, of pristine and proton-irradiated RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ crystals in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 65 T. The data for H$_{c2}$ reveal pronounced downwards curvature, particularly for the in-plane field orientation, and a superconducting anisotropy that decreases with decreasing temperature. These features are indicative of Pauli paramagnetic limiting. For the interpretation of these data, we use a model of a clean single-band superconductor with an open Fermi surface in the shape of a warped cylinder, which includes strong paramagnetic limi…
The degree of electron correlations remains a central issue in the iron-based superconductors. The parent iron pnictides are antiferromagnetic, and their bad-metal behavior has been interpreted in terms of proximity to a Mott transition. We study such a transition in multi-orbital models on modulated lattices containing an ordered pattern of iron vacancies, using a slave-rotor method. We show that the ordered vacancies lead to a band-narrowing, which pushes the system to the Mott insulator side. This effect is proposed to underlie the insulating behavior observed in the parent compounds of the…
We experimentally demonstrate stable trapping of a permanent magnet sphere above a lead superconductor, in vacuum pressures of $4 \times 10^{-8}$~mbar. The levitating magnet behaves as a harmonic oscillator, with frequencies in the 4-31~Hz range detected, and shows promise to be an ultrasensitive acceleration sensor. We directly apply an acceleration to the magnet with a current carrying wire, which we use to measure a background noise of $\sim 10^{-10} \ \text{m}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ at 30.75~Hz frequency. With current experimental parameters, we find an acceleration sensitivity of $S_a^{1/2} = …
We report the results of high-field, low-temperature MuSR measurements of the quasi two-dimensional organic superconductors \k{appa}-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 and \k{appa}-(ET)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br. The MuSR lineshapes for these compounds indicate the existence of partially-ordered vortex lattice phases in the high magnetic field regime, up to 2.5 T for the former compound and 4 T for the latter compound. The observed sharp loss of order is found to be consistent with a vortex-lattice melting transition that is predicted by numerical simulations of weakly coupled layers of pancake vortices. It is argued that the …
We consider subgap bands induced in a two-dimensional superconductor by a densely packed chain of magnetic moments with ferromagnetic or spiral alignments. We show that by contrast with sparsely packed chains a consistent description requires that all wavelengths are taken into account for the scattering at the magnetic moments. The resulting subgap states are a composition of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov-type states and magnetic scattering states, whose mixture becomes especially important to understand the nature and dimensional renormalization of gap closures for spiral magnetic alignments under increa…
Non-monotonic differential resistance (dV/dI) is observed in magnetically induced insulating films which exhibit apparent superconductor-metal-insulator transitions in the low temperature limit; at low bias currents the nonlinear transport is insulator-like while at high bias currents it is characteristic of metallic phase. The non-monotonic dV/dI may be evidence that the insulating state consists of metallic domains connected by point contacts (insulating gaps), implying that spatial inhomogeneities play a dominant role in determining the nature of the apparent metal-insulator transition.
We have carried out a detailed study to investigate the existence of an insulating parent phase for FeSe superconductor. The insulating Fe4Se5 with specific Fe-vacancy order shows a 3D-Mott variable range hopping behavior with a Verwey-like electronic correlation at around 45 K. The application of the RTA process at 450 celcius degree results in the destruction of Fe-vacancy order and induces more electron carriers by increasing the Fe3+ valence state. Superconductivity emerges with Tc ~ 8K without changing the chemical stoichiometry of the sample after the RTA process by resulting in the addi…
