Using ac susceptibility, dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements, we have investigated the magnetic properties of $Cd_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Cr_2O_4$. $Cd_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Cr_2O_4$ has an extraordinary magnetic phase including a metastable spin-glass(SG) phase at zero field, a possible phase separation scenario of AFM/FM above $\sim 0.5T$ field, and at intermediate fields, an apparent pseudo reentrant spin-glass (RSG) plateau is observed. These phenomena are closely correlated with the pinning effect of the $Cu^{2+}$ sublattice on the frustrated lattice.
We present results of dc magnetization and magnetic relaxation study showing the kinetic arrest of a first order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Ru$_{0.04}$)$_2$. This leads to the formation of a non-ergodic glass-like magnetic state. The onset of the magnetic-glass transformation is tracked through the slowing down of the magnetization dynamics. This glassy state is formed with the assistance of an external magnetic field and this is distinctly different from the well known 'spin-glass' state.
The path-dependent magnetizations (polarizations) and susceptibilities in dipole- and spin-glasses are described analytically for the standard protocols of temperature and field variations using the phenomenological Landau-type description of multiple metastable states in the nonergodic phases. The immediate manifestation of metastable states' multiplicity as staircases of magnetizations (polarizations) curves in the temperature cycling experiments is explained and described. The obtained results are in a reasonable qualitative agreement with the existing experimental data.
Magnetization measurements in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganite show that the high-temperature long-range ferromagnetic-metallic phase transforms to antiferromagnetic-insulating phase, although a fraction of ferromagnetic-metallic phase undergoes glass-like kinetic arrest and coexists at low temperature with the equilibrium antiferromagnetic-insulating phase. We show here through resistivity measurements that the residual arrested ferromagnetic-metallic fraction can be converted to the equilibrium antiferromagnetic-insulating phase by successive annealing at higher temperatures, possibly through hetero…
The theory behind the electrical switching of antiferromagnets is premised on the existence of a well defined broken symmetry state that can be rotated to encode information. A spin glass is in many ways the antithesis of this state, characterized by an ergodic landscape of nearly degenerate magnetic configurations, choosing to freeze into a distribution of these in a manner that is seemingly bereft of information. In this study, we show that the coexistence of spin glass and antiferromagnetic order allows a novel mechanism to facilitate the switching of the antiferromagnet Fe$_{1/3+δ}$NbS$_2$…
We calculate the cohesive energies of Fe-based glass-forming alloys in the B-Fe-Y-Zr quaternary system. Our {\it ab-initio} calculations fully relax atomic positions and lattice parameters yielding enthalpies of mixing at T=0K. We examine both the known equilibrium and metastable phases as well as a selection of plausible structures drawn from related alloy systems. This method, generally reproduces experimentally determined phase diagrams while providing additional information about energetics of metastable and unstable structures. In particular we can identify crystalline structures whose fo…
The breakdown of crystalline order in a disordered background connects to some of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics. For a superconducting vortex lattice, the equilibrium state in the presence of impurities is predicted to be a "Bragg glass" (BG), where the local crystalline order is maintained everywhere and yet the global positional order decays algebraically. Here, using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) we image the vortex lattice in a weakly pinned NbSe2 single crystal. We present direct evidence that the ordered state of the VL is a BG, consisting of a large …
The magnetic susceptibility of the 1/1 approximants to icosahedral quasicrystals in a series of Cd85-xMgxTb15 (x = 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys was investigated in detail. The occurrence of antiferromagnetic to spin-glass-like transition was noticed by increasing Mg. Transmission electron microscopy analysis evidenced a correlation between the magnetic transition and suppression of the monoclinic superlattice ordering with respect to the orientation of the Cd4 tetrahedron at T > 100 K. The possible origins of this phenomenon were discussed in detail. The occurrence of the antiferromagnetic to spin-gl…
We report a magnetization study of the Heusler compound Mn2PtGa that shows the existence of a magnetic-glass state. Mn2PtGa shows a first-order ferromagnetic (FM)/ferrimagnetic (FI) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in contrast to the martensitic structural transition observed in several Heusler alloys. The kinetic arrest of this first-order FM (FI) to AFM transition leads to the observed magnetic-glass behavior. We show that the strength of the applied magnetic field, which is the primary parameter to induce the magnetic-glass state, is also responsible for the stability of the supercoole…
We show that Pr${_{0.5}}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO${_3}$ with 2.5% Al substitution and La${_{0.5}}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO${_3}$ (LCMO) exhibit qualitatively similar and visibly anomalous M-H curves at low temperature. Magnetic field causes a broad first-order but irreversible antiferromagnetic (AF)-insulating (I) to ferromagnetic (FM)-metallic (M) transition in both and gives rise to soft FM state. However, the low temperature equilibrium state of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.975}$Al$_{0.025}$O$_3$ (PCMAO) is FM-M whereas that of LCMO is AF-I. In both the systems the respective equilibrium phase coexists with the ot…
We have made a series of gradient-corrected relativistic full-potential density-functional calculation for Ca-substituted and hole-doped SrRuO$_3$ in para, ferro, and $A$-, $C$-, and $G$-type antiferromagnetic states. Magnetic phase-diagram data for Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ at 0 K are presented. Neutron diffraction measurement combined with total energy calculations show that spin-glass behavior with short-range antiferromagnetic interactions rules in CaRuO$_3$. The substitution of Sr by Ca in SrRuO$_3$ decreases the ferromagnetic interaction and enhances the $G$-type antiferromagnetic interact…
We report here a detailed study of AC/DC magnetization and longitudinal/transverse transport properties of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals below $T_{c}$ = 121 K. We find that the resistivity upturn below 40 K is related to the reentrant spin glass phase at the same temperature, accompanied by additional anomalous Hall effects. The carrier concentration from the ordinary Hall effects remains constant during the transition and is close to the nominal doping level (0.4 holes/Mn). The spin glass behavior comes from the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange and antif…
We theoretically investigate the temperature dependence of the reversible structural relaxation time and diffusion constant of metallic glasses under pressure. The compression not only changes the glassy dynamics, but also generates a metastable state along with a higher-energy state where the system can rejuvenate. The relaxation times for forward and backward transitions in this two-state system are nearly identical and much faster than the relaxation time without accounting for barrier-recrossing. At ambient pressure, the expected irreversible relaxation process is recovered, and our numeri…
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
Understanding the interplay among different magnetic exchange interactions and its physical consequences, especially in the presence of itinerant electrons and disorders, remains one of the central themes in condensed matter physics. In this vein, the coupling between antiferromagnetic and spin glass orders may lead to large exchange bias, a property of potential broad technological applications. In this article, we report the coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and spin glass behaviors in a quasi-one-dimensional iron telluride TaFe$_{1+x}$Te$_3$ ($x$=0.25). Its antiferromagnetism is believ…
Li5OsO6 and Li5ReO6 polycrystalline samples were synthesized by conventional solid state methods. Employing powder neutron diffraction data, the crystal structure of Li5OsO6 was re-investigated. Li5OsO6 crystallizes in C2/m space group in an ordered NaCl structure type where a = 5.0472(1) A, b = 8.7827(2) A, c = 5.0079(1) A, Beta = 109.777(2) degree and V = 208.90(1).A^3 Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate an AFM long range order below 40K although there is evidence for low dimensional short range order above 80K. As well, the frustration index, f = |theta|/TN ~1, in contra…
A recent paper from Raveau's group asserts that the specially designed CHUF measurement protocol serves to bring out a special feature of the magnetic glass state. This protocol, enunciated and applied in our publications since over three years, allows establishing phase coexistence through macroscopic measurements and distinguishing the metastable and stable phases (amongst the coexisting phase fractions across a first order magnetic transition) of a glass-like arrested state. In view of the recent report of the vitrification of monoatomic germanium under pressure, we discuss the applicabilit…
We propose experimental verification and theoretical explanation of magnetic anomalies in the complex Fe-contained double perovskite multiferroics like PbFe$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$. The theoretical part is based on our model of coexistence of long-range magnetic order and spin glass in the above substances. In our model, the exchange interaction is anisotropic, coupling antiferromagnetically $z$ spin components of Fe$^{3+}$ ions. At the same time, the $xy$ components are coupled by much weaker exchange interaction of ferromagnetic sign. In the system with spatial disorder (half of corresponding…
Phase selection in deeply undercooled liquids and devitrified glasses during heating involves complex interplay between the barriers to nucleation and the ability for these nuclei to grow. During the devitrification of glassy alloys, complicated metastable structures often precipitate instead of simpler, more stable compounds. Here, we access this unconventional type of phase selections by investigating an Al-10%Sm system, where a complicated cubic structure first precipitates with a large lattice parameter of 1.4 nm. We not only solve the structure of this "big cubic" phase containing ~140 at…
The crystalline garnet Mn3Fe2Si3O12 and an amorphous phase of the same nominal composition are synthesized at high pressure. The magnetic properties of the two forms are reported. Both phases order antiferromagnetically. The crystalline phase exhibits a Curie-Weiss theta of -47.2 K, with a sharp ordering transition at 12 K. The glassy phase exhibits a larger antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss theta, of -83.0 K, with a broad ordering transition observed at 2.5 K. Both phases can be classified as magnetically frustrated, although the amorphous phase shows a much higher degree of frustration. The amor…
Zero field cooled spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) is observed in epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO):NiO self-assembled nanocomposite thin films grown on (001) SrTiO3 single crystal substrate by pulsed laser deposition. SEB is displayed by the novel asymmetry in the hysteresis loop of the composite film along with the field cooled conventional exchange bias (CEB) effect. The training effect shows that exchange bias relaxation is disorder mediated. It is revealed from DC magnetization results that such nanocomposite film divulges spin glass like behaviour, which is arising due to competing ferromag…
Magnetic properties of DyAl$_{0.926}$Cr$_{0.074}$O$_3$ and DyAlO$_3$ were studied. We found that both compounds are antiferromagnetic with a low Néel transition temperature. At higher temperatures the magnetic characteristics show a Curie-Weiss dependence. The Néel temperature disappears when a field of about 2 T is applied, the system changes from an antiferromagnetic to a weak ferromagnetic behavior due to a metamagnetic transition. Furthermore, AC magnetic measurements in the Cr doped compound, at different frequencies, show a spin glass-like behavior. These transitions were studied and cor…
We study the J1-J2 Ising model on the square lattice using the random local field approximation (RLFA) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for various values of the ratio p = J2/|J1| with antiferromagnetic coupling J2, ensuring spin frustration. RLFA predicts metastable states with zero order parameter (polarization) at low temperature for p \in (0,1). This is supported by our MC simulations, in which the system relaxes into metastable states with not only zero, but also with arbitrary polarization, depending on its initial value, external field, and temperature. We support our findings by calcul…
