We show how Oshikawa's theorem for the Fermi surface volume of the Kondo lattice can be extended to the SU$(N)$ symmetric case. By extending the theorem, we are able to show that the mechanism of Fermi surface expansion seen in the large $N$ mean-field theory is directly linked to the expansion of the Fermi surface in a spin-$1/2$ Kondo lattice. This linkage enables us to interpret the expansion of the Fermi surface in a Kondo lattice as a fractionalization of the local moments into heavy electrons. Our method allows extension to a pure U(1) spin liquid, where we find the volume of the spinon Fermi surface by applying a spin-twist, analogous to Oshikawa's flux insertion. Lastly, we discuss the possibility of interpreting the FL$^*$ phase characterised by a small Fermi surface in the absence of symmetry breaking, as a non-topological coexistence of such a U(1) spin liquid and an electronic Fermi liquid.
We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state where the spinor order parameter carries charge $e$ and spin $S=1/2$. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge $e$, spinorial order develops off-d…
The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1/2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair …
We investigate charge fractionalizations in artificial Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) composed of two capacitively coupled quantum Hall edge channels (ECs) in graphene. The interaction strength of the artificial TLLs can be controlled through distance W between the ECs. We show that the fractionalization ratio r and the TLL mode velocity v vary with W. The experimentally obtained relation between v and r follows a unique function predicted by the TLL theory. We also show that charged wavepackets are reflected back and forth multiple times at both ends of the TLL region.
Helical Luttinger liquids, appearing at the edge of two-dimensional topological insulators, represent a new paradigm of one-dimensional systems, where peculiar quantum phenomena can be investigated. Motivated by recent experiments on charge fractionalization, we propose a setup based on helical Luttinger liquids that allows to time-resolve, in addition to charge fractionalization, also spin-charge separation and pure spin fractionalization. This is due to the combined presence of spin-momentum locking and interactions. We show that electric time-resolved measurements can reveal both charge and…
It is well established that at low energies one-dimensional (1D) fermionic systems are described by the Luttinger liquid (LL) theory, that predicts phenomena like spin-charge separation, and charge fractionalization into chiral modes. Here we show through the time evolution of an electron injected into a 1D t-J model, obtained with time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, that a further fractionalization of both charge and spin takes place beyond the hydrodynamic limit. Its dynamics can be understood at the supersymmetric point (J=2t) in terms of the excitations of the Bethe-Ansatz…
In this paper, we consider analytically the density evolution of a spinless Fermi liquid with a nonlinear dispersion relation into which one particle is injected. The interaction is point-like and the temperature is zero. We obtain a formula for the evolution of the density and discuss the picture it gives as well as the physics behind it. Compared to the case of a linear spectrum, we find further and more complex fractionalization of the initial density hump: it splits into three humps instead of two, moreover, all three change their shapes in a complicated manner. We analyze the mechanisms o…
We study nonequilibrium transport through a charge Kondo device realizing the two-channel Kondo critical point in a recent experiment by Iftikhar et al. By computing the current and shot noise at low voltages near the critical point, we obtain a universal Fano factor $e^*/e=1/2$. We identify elementary transport processes as weak scattering of emergent fermions carrying half-integer charge quantum numbers. This forms an experimental fingerprint for fractionalization in a non-Fermi liquid, which, compared to spin-Kondo devices, could be observed at elevated temperatures.
Charge fractionalization is the phenomenon where quasi-particle excitations in a many-particle system appear with non-integer values relative to the fundamental charge unit. Examples of such systems are known from field theoretical models and from physical realizations. Recently there has been an interest in charge fractionalization in one-dimensional systems described by Luttinger liquid theory. These are gapless systems and that gives rise to the question whether non-integer charges should be regarded as sharp in the same meaning as in a gapped system. In this talk I first give an introducti…
Topology, symmetry, electron correlations, and the interplay between them have formed the cornerstone of our understanding of quantum materials in recent years and are used to identify new emerging phases. While the first two give a fair understanding of noninteracting and, in many cases, weakly interacting wave function of electron systems, the inclusion of strong correlations could change the picture substantially. The Kondo lattice model is a paradigmatic example of the interplay of electron correlations and conduction electrons of a metallic system, describing heavy fermion materials and a…
We consider Dirac electrons on the honeycomb lattice Kondo coupled to spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on the kagome lattice. The interactions between the spins are chosen along the lines of the Balents-Fisher-Girvin model that is known to host a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid and a ferromagnetic phase. The model is amenable to sign free auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. While in the ferromagnetic phase the Dirac electrons acquire a gap, they remain massless in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid phase due to the breakdown of Kondo screening. Since our model has an odd number of spins per uni…
We propose a three terminal spin polarized stm setup for probing the helical nature of the Luttinger liquid edge state that appears in the quantum spin Hall system. We show that the three-terminal tunneling conductance strongly depends on the angle ($θ$) between the magnetization direction of the tip and the local orientation of the electron spin on the edge while the two terminal conductance is independent of this angle. We demonstrate that chiral injection of an electron into the helical Luttinger liquid (which occurs when $θ$ is zero or $π$) is associated with fractionalization of the spin …
We investigate the dephasing of mesoscopic interferences by electron-electron interactions in a strictly one-dimensional geometry composed of two weakly-coupled (clean and very long) Luttinger liquids. The main goal of this paper is to demonstrate that interactions in one dimension can produce a visible attenuation of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Through a Nyquist noise type description of the interactions and a direct (exact) calculation based on the Luttinger theory, in our setup we firmly emphasize that the dephasing time results from the electron fractionalization time.
We study the Kondo effect in two crossed Luttinger liquids, using Boundary Conformal Field Theory. We predict two types of critical behaviors: either a two-channel Kondo fixed point with a nonuniversal Wilson ratio, or a new theory with an anomalous response identical to that found by Furusaki and Nagaosa (for the Kondo effect in a single Luttinger liquid). Moreover, we discuss the relevance of perturbations like channel anisotropy, and we make links with the Kondo effect in a two-band Hubbard system modeled by a channel-dependent Luttinger Hamiltonian. The suppression of backscattering off th…
We propose a route toward realizing fractionalized topological phases of matter (i.e. with intrinsic topological order) by literally building on un-fractionalized phases. Our approach employs a Kondo lattice model in which a gapped electronic system of non-interacting fermions is coupled to non-interacting local moments via the exchange interaction. Using general entanglement-based arguments and explicit lattice models, we show that in this way gapped spin liquids can be induced in the spin system. We demonstrate the power of this topological bootstrap concept with two examples: (1) a chiral s…
The Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid is studied using the renormalization group method. By renormalizing the boson fields, scaling equations to the second order for an arbitrary Luttinger interaction are obtained. For the ferromagnetic Kondo coupling, a spin bound state(triplet) can be realized without invoking a nearest neighbor spin interaction in agreement with the recent Bethe ansatz calculation. The scaling theory in the presence of the scalar potential shows that there is no interplay between the magnetic and non-magnetic interaction. Also a study on the crossover behavior of the Kondo…
We study the gate voltage dependence of the linear conductance through a quantum dot coupled to one-dimensional leads. For interacting dot electrons but noninteracting leads Kondo physics implies broad plateau-like resonances. In the opposite case Luttinger liquid behavior leads to sharp resonances. In the presence of Kondo as well as Luttinger liquid physics and for experimentally relevant parameters, we find a line shape that resembles the one of the Kondo case.
Arguments are presented that in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model f-electron spins participate in filling of the Fermi sea. It is shown that in its paramagnetic phase this model belongs to the spin-1/2 Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid universality class. The ratio of the spin and charge velocities v_s/v_c and K_c are estimated to be of the order of (T_K/E_F)^{1/2}.
We analyze the time evolution of spin-polarized electron wave packets injected into the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In the presence of electron interactions, the system is described as a helical Luttinger liquid and injected electrons fractionalize. However, because of the presence of metallic detectors, no evidences of fractionalization are encoded in dc measurements, and in this regime the system do not show deviations from its non-interacting behavior. Nevertheless, we show that the helical Luttinger liquid nature emerges in the transient dynamics, where signatur…
We show that the paradigmatic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) description of two local magnetic moments coupled to propagating electrons breaks down in helical Luttinger Liquids when the electron interaction is stronger than some critical value. In this novel regime, the Kondo effect overwhelms the RKKY interaction over all macroscopic inter-impurity distances. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the helicity (realized, for instance, at edges of a time-reversal invariant topological insulator) and does not take place in usual (non-helical) Luttinger Liquids.
We consider the Kondo effect in quantum dots coupled to Luttinger liquid leads, focussing on the case of repulsive interactions and spin SU(2) symmetry in the leads. We find that the system can flow to the 1-channel or 2-channel Kondo fixed points, depending on the interactions in the system. We compute the conductance and find that the qualitative behavior is strongly dependent on the interactions. Finally, we point out a consequence of 2-channel Kondo physics, which should be observable in thermal conductance measurements.
A quantum Monte Carlo simulation method has been developed and applied to study the critical behavior of a single Kondo impurity in a Luttinger liquid. This numerically exact method has no finite-size limitations and allows to simulate the whole temperature range. Focusing on the impurity magnetic susceptibility, we determine the scaling functions, in particular for temperatures well below the Kondo temperature. In the absence of elastic potential scattering, we find Fermi-liquid behavior for strong electron-electron interactions, g_c < 1/2, and anomalous power laws for 1/2<g_c < 1, where g_c …
A non-perturbative proof of Luttinger's theorem, based on a topological argument, is given for Fermi liquids in arbitrary dimensions. Application to the Kondo lattice shows that even the completely localized spins do contribute to the Fermi sea volume as electrons, whenever the system can be described as a Fermi liquid.
The combined effect of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions on the physics of a helical Luttinger liquid coupled to a Kondo impurity is studied. A Rashba coupling can potentially destroy the Kondo singlet formation in certain parameter regimes [Phys. Rev. B 86, 161103(R) (2012)]. This effect is here shown to vanish for sufficiently strong Dresselhaus interaction. The transport properties of the system are investigated by calculating electrical conductance, current and current fluctuations, and thermal conductance.
We study a lattice realization of a Luttinger liquid interacting with a bath of quantum spins in terms of an antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain, where each spin is also coupled to a σ=1/2 Kondo spin degree of freedom. This model describes the low-energy spin dynamics in quasi one dimensional materials, where the electronic spins of the magnetic ions interact with those of impurities, nuclei and possibly other spin species present in their environment. For large ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo interaction J' there are two phases corresponding to an effective spin-1 Heisenberg ch…
Using a precise coset Ising-Bose representation, we show how backscattering of electrons off a magnetic impurity destabilizes the two-channel Kondo fixed point and drives the system to a new fixed point, in agreement with previous results. In addition, we verify the scaling proposed by Furusaki and Nagaosa and prove that the other possible critical fixed point, namely the local Fermi liquid class, is not completely universal when backscattering is included because the Wilson ratio is not well-defined in the spinon basis.
We report Luttinger liquid line shapes better revealed by new angle resolved photoemission data taken with a much improved angle resolution on a quasi-1-dimensional metal Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$. The new data indicate a larger spinon velocity than our previous lower resolution data indicated.
The one dimensional $SU(2)$ Kondo Lattice model is studied by Density Matrix Renormalization Group away from half-filling. We find signatures of a Heavy Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid (HTLL) phase, which describes one dimensional Heavy Fermions. We compute the wave-vector dependent charge and spin susceptibilities. Our results establish divergent charge and spin correlations at the large Fermi surface $k_F+π/2$, and its harmonics. We also find a signature of the hybridization gap at the small Fermi surface. We compare our $N\!=\!2$ results to the large-$N$ Slave Bosons mean field theory of the $SU(…
We theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium current through a quantum dot coupled to one- dimensional electron leads, utilizing a controlled frequency-dependent renormalization group (RG) approach. We compute the non-equilibrium conductance for large bias voltages and address the interplay between decoherence, Kondo entanglement and Luttinger physics. The combined effect of large bias voltage and strong interactions in the leads, known to stabilize two-channel Kondo physics, leads to non-trivial modifications of the conductance. For weak interactions, we build an analogy to a dot coupled …
We discuss possible patterns of electron fractionalization in strongly interacting electron systems. A popular possibility is one in which the charge of the electron has been liberated from its Fermi statistics. Such a fractionalized phase contains in it the seed of superconductivity. Another possibility occurs when the spin of the electron, rather than its charge, is liberated from its Fermi statistics. Such a phase contains in it the seed of magnetism, rather than superconductivity. We consider models in which both of these phases occur and study possible phase transitions between them. We d…
We study a system of an impurity spin coupled to a junction of several Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids using a renormalization group scheme. For the decoupled S-matrix at the junction, there is a range of Kondo couplings which flow to a multi-channel fixed point for repulsive inter-electron interactions; this is associated with a characteristic temperature dependence of the spin-flip scatterings. If the junction is governed by the Griffiths S-matrix, the Kondo couplings flow to a strong coupling fixed point where all the wires are decoupled.
The Fermi liquid paradigm for metals has contributed enormously to our understanding of condensed matter systems. However a growing number of quantum critical systems have been shown to exhibit non Fermi liquid behavior. A full understanding of such systems is still lacking and in particular analytical results away from equilibrium are rare. In this work, we provide a distinct example of such kind in a two channel Kondo Luttinger model where a Kondo impurity couples to two voltage biased interacting electron leads, experimentally realizable in a dissipative quantum dot. An exotic quantum phase…
We study the problem of underscreened Kondo physics in an interacting electronic system modeled by a Luttiger Liquid (LL). We find that the leading temperature dependence of thermodynamical quantities like the specific heat, spin susceptibility are Fermi Liquid like in nature. However, anomalous power law exponents are seen in the subleading terms. We also discuss possible realizations through single and double quantum dot configurations coupled to LL leads and its consequences for electronic transport. The leading low temperature transport behavior is seen to exhibit in general, non Fermi liq…
We investigate theoretically quantum transport through the "charge" Kondo circuit consisting of the quantum dot (QD) coupled weakly to an electrode at temperature $T+ΔT$ and connected strongly to another electrode at the reference temperature $T$ by a single-mode quantum point contact (QPC). To account for the effects of Coulomb interaction in the QD-QPC setup operating in the integer quantum Hall regime we describe the edge current in the quantum circuit by Luttinger model characterized by the Luttinger parameter $g$. It is shown that the temperature dependence of both electric conductance $G…

Quantum impurity problems in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) are reviewed with emphasis on their analogy to the Kondo problem in Fermi liquids. First, the problem of a static impurity in a spinless TLL is considered, which is related to the model studied in the context of the macroscopic quantum coherence. In the low-energy limit the TLL is essentially cut into two pieces when interaction is repulsive. The orthogonality catastrophe in a TLL is then discussed. Finally, the Kondo effect of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional repulsively interacting electron liquids (a spinful TLL) is revi…
We show that the interplay between antiferromagnetic interaction and hole motion gives rise to a topological superconducting phase. This is captured by the one dimensional anisotropic $t-J$ model which can be experimentally achieved with ultracold polar molecules trapped onto an optical lattice. As a function of the anisotropy strength we find that different quantum phases appear, ranging from a gapless Luttinger liquid to spin gapped conducting and superconducting regimes. In presence of appropriate $z$-anisotropy, we also prove that a phase characterized by non-trivial topological order take…
We measure by inelastic neutron scattering the spin excitation spectra as a function of applied magnetic field in the quantum spin-ladder material (C5H12N)2CuBr4. Discrete magnon modes at low fields in the quantum disordered phase and at high fields in the saturated phase contrast sharply with a spinon continuum at intermediate fields characteristic of the Luttinger-liquid phase. By tuning the magnetic field, we drive the fractionalization of magnons into spinons and, in this deconfined regime, observe both commensurate and incommensurate continua.
When an electron with well-defined momentum tunnels into a nonchiral Luttinger liquid, it breaks up into two separate wave packets that carry fractional charges and move in opposite directions. A direct observation of this phenomenon has proven elusive, mainly due to single-particle and plasmon backscattering caused by measurement probes. This paper theoretically introduces two topological insulator devices that are naturally suited for detecting fractional charges and their velocities directly and in a noninvasive fashion.
We use bosonization and renormalization group methods to determine the ground state phase diagram of a one-dimensional frustrated Kondo-Heisenberg system consisting of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Luttinger liquid coupled by a Kondo exchange interaction $J_K$ to a frustrated quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, with a nearest-neighbor exchange coupling $J_1$ and a next-nearest-neighbor (frustrating) exchange interaction $J_2$. We analyze the interplay of quantum frustration in the antiferromagnetic chain with the Kondo exchange coupling $J_K$ with the Luttinger liquid. We discuss the stru…
The angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy lineshapes of quasi one-dimensional (1d) Li0.9Mo6O17 display both agreement with and departures from the one-band Tomonaga-Luttinger model. We show that the departures can be understood by explicitly accounting for the four modes arising from the two quasi-1d bands known to cross the Fermi energy. The key assumption is that the antisymmetric charge mode is gapped with a magnitude near the temperature (T) of a mysterious 25K powerlaw resistivity upturn. The gap is consistent with the lack of a charge or spin density wave accompanying the upturn, is …
We study a system consisting of a junction of N quantum wires, where the junction is characterized by a scalar S-matrix, and an impurity spin is coupled to the electrons close to the junction. The wires are modeled as weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We derive the renormalization group equations for the Kondo couplings of the spin to the electronic modes on different wires, and analyze the renormalization group flows and fixed points for different values of the initial Kondo couplings and of the junction S-matrix (such as the decoupled S-matrix and the Griffiths S-matrix). We gen…
Ballistic transport of helical edge modes in two-dimensional topological insulators is protected by time-reversal symmetry. Recently it was pointed out [1] that coupling of non-interacting helical electrons to an array of randomly anisotropic Kondo impurities can lead to a spontaneous breaking of the symmetry and, thus, can remove this protection. We have analyzed effects of the interaction between the electrons using a combination of the functional and the Abelian bosonization approaches. The suppression of the ballistic transport turns out to be robust in a broad range of the interaction str…
In this paper, we present a description of Haldane's Luttinger liquid which parallels Laughlin's theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) incompressible fluid, both exhibiting similar ground states as well as fractional excitations. These two non-Fermi liquids are instances of a generic structure for low-dimensional quantum liquids which we propose to dub Jastrow-Luttinger Fractional Liquids. An important feature of such liquids is the complete fractionalization of the parent particle. In particular, in both one and two dimensions spin-charge separation can be achieved and is indeed suggest…
We study a three-components fermionic gas loaded in a one-dimensional optical trap at half-filling. We find that the system is fully gapped and may order into 8 possible phases: four 2$k_F$ atomic density wave and spin-Peierls phases with all possible relative $π$ phases shifts between the three species. We find that trionic excitations are unstable toward the decay into pairs of kinks carrying a {\it fractional} number, $Q=3/2$, of atoms. These sesquions eventually condense upon small doping and are described by a Luttinger liquid. We finally discuss the phase diagram of a three component mix…
