In this paper, we consider analytically the density evolution of a spinless Fermi liquid with a nonlinear dispersion relation into which one particle is injected. The interaction is point-like and the temperature is zero. We obtain a formula for the evolution of the density and discuss the picture it gives as well as the physics behind it. Compared to the case of a linear spectrum, we find further and more complex fractionalization of the initial density hump: it splits into three humps instead of two, moreover, all three change their shapes in a complicated manner. We analyze the mechanisms of these phenomena and calculate their main characteristics. We also show that the fractionalization can be illustrated from a semiclassical point of view.
We investigate charge fractionalizations in artificial Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) composed of two capacitively coupled quantum Hall edge channels (ECs) in graphene. The interaction strength of the artificial TLLs can be controlled through distance W between the ECs. We show that the fractionalization ratio r and the TLL mode velocity v vary with W. The experimentally obtained relation between v and r follows a unique function predicted by the TLL theory. We also show that charged wavepackets are reflected back and forth multiple times at both ends of the TLL region.
Helical Luttinger liquids, appearing at the edge of two-dimensional topological insulators, represent a new paradigm of one-dimensional systems, where peculiar quantum phenomena can be investigated. Motivated by recent experiments on charge fractionalization, we propose a setup based on helical Luttinger liquids that allows to time-resolve, in addition to charge fractionalization, also spin-charge separation and pure spin fractionalization. This is due to the combined presence of spin-momentum locking and interactions. We show that electric time-resolved measurements can reveal both charge and…
It is well established that at low energies one-dimensional (1D) fermionic systems are described by the Luttinger liquid (LL) theory, that predicts phenomena like spin-charge separation, and charge fractionalization into chiral modes. Here we show through the time evolution of an electron injected into a 1D t-J model, obtained with time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, that a further fractionalization of both charge and spin takes place beyond the hydrodynamic limit. Its dynamics can be understood at the supersymmetric point (J=2t) in terms of the excitations of the Bethe-Ansatz…
Charge fractionalization is the phenomenon where quasi-particle excitations in a many-particle system appear with non-integer values relative to the fundamental charge unit. Examples of such systems are known from field theoretical models and from physical realizations. Recently there has been an interest in charge fractionalization in one-dimensional systems described by Luttinger liquid theory. These are gapless systems and that gives rise to the question whether non-integer charges should be regarded as sharp in the same meaning as in a gapped system. In this talk I first give an introducti…
We propose a three terminal spin polarized stm setup for probing the helical nature of the Luttinger liquid edge state that appears in the quantum spin Hall system. We show that the three-terminal tunneling conductance strongly depends on the angle ($θ$) between the magnetization direction of the tip and the local orientation of the electron spin on the edge while the two terminal conductance is independent of this angle. We demonstrate that chiral injection of an electron into the helical Luttinger liquid (which occurs when $θ$ is zero or $π$) is associated with fractionalization of the spin …
We show how Oshikawa's theorem for the Fermi surface volume of the Kondo lattice can be extended to the SU$(N)$ symmetric case. By extending the theorem, we are able to show that the mechanism of Fermi surface expansion seen in the large $N$ mean-field theory is directly linked to the expansion of the Fermi surface in a spin-$1/2$ Kondo lattice. This linkage enables us to interpret the expansion of the Fermi surface in a Kondo lattice as a fractionalization of the local moments into heavy electrons. Our method allows extension to a pure U(1) spin liquid, where we find the volume of the spinon …
We investigate the dephasing of mesoscopic interferences by electron-electron interactions in a strictly one-dimensional geometry composed of two weakly-coupled (clean and very long) Luttinger liquids. The main goal of this paper is to demonstrate that interactions in one dimension can produce a visible attenuation of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Through a Nyquist noise type description of the interactions and a direct (exact) calculation based on the Luttinger theory, in our setup we firmly emphasize that the dephasing time results from the electron fractionalization time.
We report Luttinger liquid line shapes better revealed by new angle resolved photoemission data taken with a much improved angle resolution on a quasi-1-dimensional metal Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$. The new data indicate a larger spinon velocity than our previous lower resolution data indicated.
We analyze the time evolution of spin-polarized electron wave packets injected into the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In the presence of electron interactions, the system is described as a helical Luttinger liquid and injected electrons fractionalize. However, because of the presence of metallic detectors, no evidences of fractionalization are encoded in dc measurements, and in this regime the system do not show deviations from its non-interacting behavior. Nevertheless, we show that the helical Luttinger liquid nature emerges in the transient dynamics, where signatur…
We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains, focusing in particular on itinerant Ising anyon chains, and derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (non-Abelian) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors requires a subtle coupling betwee…
The angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy lineshapes of quasi one-dimensional (1d) Li0.9Mo6O17 display both agreement with and departures from the one-band Tomonaga-Luttinger model. We show that the departures can be understood by explicitly accounting for the four modes arising from the two quasi-1d bands known to cross the Fermi energy. The key assumption is that the antisymmetric charge mode is gapped with a magnitude near the temperature (T) of a mysterious 25K powerlaw resistivity upturn. The gap is consistent with the lack of a charge or spin density wave accompanying the upturn, is …
When an electron with well-defined momentum tunnels into a nonchiral Luttinger liquid, it breaks up into two separate wave packets that carry fractional charges and move in opposite directions. A direct observation of this phenomenon has proven elusive, mainly due to single-particle and plasmon backscattering caused by measurement probes. This paper theoretically introduces two topological insulator devices that are naturally suited for detecting fractional charges and their velocities directly and in a noninvasive fashion.
Luttinger's theorem for Fermi liquids equates the volume enclosed by the Fermi surface in momentum space to the electron filling, independent of the strength and nature of interactions. Motivated by recent momentum balance arguments that establish this result in a non-perturbative fashion [M. Oshikawa, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 3370 (2000)], we present extensions of this momentum balance argument to exotic systems which exhibit quantum number fractionalization focussing on $Z_2$ fractionalized insulators, superfluids and Fermi liquids. These lead to nontrivial relations between the particle f…
In this paper, we present a description of Haldane's Luttinger liquid which parallels Laughlin's theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) incompressible fluid, both exhibiting similar ground states as well as fractional excitations. These two non-Fermi liquids are instances of a generic structure for low-dimensional quantum liquids which we propose to dub Jastrow-Luttinger Fractional Liquids. An important feature of such liquids is the complete fractionalization of the parent particle. In particular, in both one and two dimensions spin-charge separation can be achieved and is indeed suggest…
We study a three-components fermionic gas loaded in a one-dimensional optical trap at half-filling. We find that the system is fully gapped and may order into 8 possible phases: four 2$k_F$ atomic density wave and spin-Peierls phases with all possible relative $π$ phases shifts between the three species. We find that trionic excitations are unstable toward the decay into pairs of kinks carrying a {\it fractional} number, $Q=3/2$, of atoms. These sesquions eventually condense upon small doping and are described by a Luttinger liquid. We finally discuss the phase diagram of a three component mix…
We consider Dirac electrons on the honeycomb lattice Kondo coupled to spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on the kagome lattice. The interactions between the spins are chosen along the lines of the Balents-Fisher-Girvin model that is known to host a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid and a ferromagnetic phase. The model is amenable to sign free auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. While in the ferromagnetic phase the Dirac electrons acquire a gap, they remain massless in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid phase due to the breakdown of Kondo screening. Since our model has an odd number of spins per uni…
We discuss symmetries intermediate between global and local and formalize the notion of dimensional reduction adduced from such symmetries. We apply this generalization to several systems including liquid crystalline phases of Quantum Hall systems, transition metal orbital systems, frustrated spin systems, (p+ip) superconducting arrays, and sliding Luttinger liquids. By considering space-time reflection symmetries, we illustrate that several of these systems are dual to each other. In some systems exhibiting these symmetries, low temperature local orders emerge by an "order out of disorder" ef…
We examine charge fractionalization by chiral separation in a one-dimensional fermion system described by Luttinger liquid theory. The focus is on the question of whether the fractional charges are quantum mechanically sharp, and in the analysis we make a distinction between the global charge, which is restricted by boundary conditions, and the local charge where a background contribution is subtracted. We show, by way of examples, that fractional charges of arbitrary values, all which are quantum mechanically sharp, can be introduced by different initial conditions. Since the system is gaples…
We investigate the time evolution towards the asymptotic steady state of a one dimensional interacting system after a quantum quench. We show that at finite time the latter induces entanglement between right- and left- moving density excitations, encoded in their cross-correlators, which vanishes in the long-time limit. This behavior results in a universal time-decay in system spectral properties $ \propto t^{-2} $, in addition to non-universal power-law contributions typical of Luttinger liquids. Importantly, we argue that the presence of quench-induced entanglement clearly emerges in transpo…
We obtained the analog of the Luttinger relation for a commensurate spin-density-wave state. We show that while the relation between the area of the occupied states and the density of particles gets modified in a simple and predictable way when the system becomes ordered, a perturbative consideration of the Luttinger theorem does not work due to the presence of an anomaly similar to the chiral anomaly in quantum electrodynamics.
We investigate the decoherence of the electron wavepacket in purely ballistic one-dimensional systems described through the Luttinger liquid (LL). At a finite temperature $T$ and long times $t$, we show that the electron Green's function for a fixed wavevector close to one Fermi point decays as $\exp(-t/τ_F)$, as opposed to the power-law behavior occurring at short times, and the emerging electron lifetime obeys $τ_F^{-1}\propto T$ for spinful as well as spinless electrons. For strong interactions, $(Tτ_F)\ll 1$, reflecting that the electron is not a good Landau quasiparticle in LLs. We justif…
We investigate the stability of a Luttinger liquid, upon suddenly coupling it to a dissipative environment. Within the Lindblad equation, the environment couples to local currents and heats the quantum liquid up to infinite temperatures. The single particle density matrix reveals the fractionalization of fermionic excitations in the spatial correlations by retaining the initial non-integer power law exponents, accompanied by an exponential decay in time with interaction dependent rate. The spectrum of the time evolved density matrix is gapped, which collapses gradually as $-\ln(t)$. The von Ne…
We investigate the properties of the Heisenberg S=1 chain with bilinear and biquadratic interactions in a magnetic field using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, Bethe ansatz and field theoretical considerations. In a large region of the parameter space, we identify a magnetized ferroquadrupolar Luttinger liquid consisting of a quasi-condensate of bound magnon pairs. This liquid undergoes a continuous pair unbinding transition to a more conventional Luttinger liquid region obtained by polarizing the system above the Haldane gap region. This pair unbinding transition is shown to be in th…
For uniform systems of spin-less fermions in d spatial dimensions with d > 1, interacting through the isotropic two-body potential v(r-r'), a celebrated theorem due to Luttinger (1961) states that under the_assumption_ of validity of the many-body perturbation theory the self-energy Sigma(k;epsilon), with 0 <,= k <,~ 3 k_F (where k_F stands for the Fermi wavenumber), satisfies the following universal asymptotic relation as epsilon approaches the Fermi energy epsilon_F: Im[Sigma(k;epsilon)] ~ -,+ alpha_k (epsilon-epsilon_F)^2, epsilon >,< epsilon_F, with alpha_k >,= 0. As this is, by definition…
It is shown that certain fractionally-charged quasiparticles can be modeled on \(D-\)dimensional lattices in terms of unconventional yet simple Fock algebras of creation and annihilation operators. These unconventional Fock algebras are derived from the usual fermionic algebra by taking roots (the square root, cubic root, etc.) of the usual fermionic creation and annihilation operators. If the fermions carry non-Abelian charges, then this approach fractionalizes the Abelian charges only. In particular, the \(m\)th-root of a spinful fermion carries charge \(e/m\) and spin \(1/2\). Just like tak…
We consider zero temperature behavior of dynamic response functions of 1D systems near edges of support in momentum-energy plane $(k, ω).$ The description of the singularities of dynamic response functions near an edge $ε(k)$ is given by the effective Hamiltonian of a mobile impurity moving in a Luttinger liquid. For Galilean-invariant systems, we relate the parameters of such an effective Hamiltonian to the properties of the function $ε(k).$ This allows us to express the exponents which characterize singular response functions of spinless bosonic or fermionic liquids in terms of $ε(k)$ and Lu…
On the basis of an analysis of the numerical results corresponding to the half-filled 1D t-t'-V model on some finite lattices, Kokalj and Prelovsek (KP) have in a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 78, 153103 (2008), arXiv:arXiv:0803.4468] concluded that the Luttinger theorem (LT) does not apply for the Mott-Hubbard (MH) insulating phase of this model (i.e. for V >> t) in the thermodynamic limit; KP even suggested, incorrectly, that failure of the LT were apparent for a half-filled finite system consisting of N=26 lattice sites. By employing a simple model for the self-energy Sigma of a MH state, we s…
An accurate numerical consideration of 1D spinless fermion model with next-nearest neighbour (NNN) interactions is carried out for the electron concentrations 4/7. It is shown that depending on the parameters of the model it can be either Luttinger liquid or bipolaron liquid. In the former case competing interactions can result in a smooth behavior of one-electron distribution function at the Fermi surface with a divergence in the second derivative with respect to the quasimomentum (and not in the first one, as usual). In this connection, uncommon photoemission spectra for some 1D conductors c…
Hubbard ladders are an important stepping stone to the physics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. While many of their properties are accessible to numerical and analytical techniques, the question of whether weakly hole-doped Hubbard ladders are dominated by superconducting or charge-density-wave correlations has so far eluded a definitive answer. In particular, previous numerical simulations of Hubbard ladders have seen a much faster decay of superconducting correlations than expected based on analytical arguments. We revisit this question using a state-of-the-art implementation of the den…
