We study bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with $C_{2}$ rotational symmetry in four spatial dimensions which is not captured by the group cohomology classification. By using the topological crystal approach, we show that the topological crystalline state of this SPT phase is given by placing an $E_{8}$ state on the two dimensional rotational invariant plane, which provides a simple physical picture of this phase. Based on this understanding, we show that a variant of QED4 with charge-1 and charge-3 Dirac fermions is a field theoretical description of the three dimensional boundary. We also discuss the connection to symmetric gapped boundary with topological order and its anomaly signature.
We construct a series of bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) states beyond group cohomology classification using "decorated defects" approach. This construction is based on topological defects of ordinary Landau order parameters, decorated with the bosonic short range entangled (BSRE) states in $(4k+3)d$ and $(4k+5)d$ space-time (with $k$ being nonnegative integers), which do not need any symmetry. This approach not only gives these BSPT states an intuitive physical picture, it also allows us to derive the effective field theory for all these BSPT states beyond group cohomology.
We propose that Symmetry Protected Topological Phases with a finite symmetry group G are classified by cobordism groups of the classifying space of G. This provides an explanation for the recent discovery of bosonic SPT phases which do not fit into the group cohomology classification. We discuss the connection of the cobordism classification of SPT phases to gauge and gravitational anomalies in various dimensions.
Recently, it has been shown that two-dimensional bosonic symmetry-protected topological(SPT) phases with on-site unitary symmetry $G$ can be completely classified by the group cohomology class $H^3(G, \mathrm{U}(1))$. Later, group super-cohomology class was proposed as a partial classification for SPT phases of interacting fermions. In this work, we revisit this problem based on the mathematical framework of $G$-extension of unitary braided tensor category(UBTC) theory. We first reproduce the partial classifications given by group super-cohomology, then we show that with an additional $H^1(G, …
We discuss the classification of SPT phases in condensed matter systems. We review Kitaev's argument that SPT phases are classified by a generalized cohomology theory, valued in the spectrum of gapped physical systems. We propose a concrete description of that spectrum and of the corresponding cohomology theory. We compare our proposal to pre-existing constructions in the literature.
Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry G. They can all be smoothly connected to the same trivial product state if we break the symmetry. The Haldane phase of spin-1 chain is the first example of SPT phase which is protected by SO(3) spin rotation symmetry. The topological insulator is another exam- ple of SPT phase which is protected by U(1) and time reversal symmetries. It has been shown that free fermion SPT phases can be systematically described by the K-theory. In this paper, we show that interacting bosonic SPT phases ca…
Symmetry protected topological (SPT) states are bulk gapped states with gapless edge excitations protected by certain symmetries. The SPT phases in free fermion systems, like topological insulators, can be classified by the K-theory. However, it is not known what SPT phases exist in general interacting systems. In this paper, we present a systematic way to construct SPT phases in interacting bosonic systems, which allows us to identify many new SPT phases, including three bosonic versions of topological insulators in three dimension and one in two dimension protected by particle number conserv…
Symmetry protected topological states (SPTs) have the same symmetry and the phase transition between them are beyond Landau's symmetry breaking formalism. In this paper we study (1) the critical theory of phase transition between trivial and non-trivial SPTs, and (2) the relation between such critical theory and the gapless boundary theory of SPTs. Based on examples of SO(3) and SU(2) SPTs, we propose that under appropriate boundary condition the critical theory contains the delocalized version of the boundary excitations. In addition, we prove that the boundary theory is the critical theory s…
Fusion category symmetries are finite symmetries in 1+1 dimensions described by unitary fusion categories. We classify 1+1d time-reversal invariant bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with fusion category symmetry by using topological field theories. We first formulate two-dimensional unoriented topological field theories whose symmetry splits into time-reversal symmetry and fusion category symmetry. We then solve them to show that SPT phases are classified by equivalence classes of quintuples $(Z, M, i, s, ϕ)$ where $(Z, M, i)$ is a fiber functor, $s$ is a sign, and $ϕ$ is the…
Short-range entangled topological phases of matter are closely connected to Topological Quantum Field Theory. We use this connection to classify bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological Phases in low dimensions, including the case when the symmetry involves time-reversal. To accomplish this, we generalize Turaev's description of equivariant TQFT to the unoriented case. We show that invertible unoriented equivariant TQFTs in one or less spatial dimensions are classified by twisted group cohomology, in agreement with the group cohomology proposal of Chen, Gu, Liu and Wen. We also show that inverti…
The non-regularizability of free fermion field theories, which is the root of various quantum anomalies, plays a central role in particle physics and modern condensed matter physics. In this paper, we generalize the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem to all minimal nodal free fermion field theories protected by the time reversal, charge conservation, and charge conjugation symmetries. We prove that these massless field theories cannot be regularized on a lattice.
We identify field theories that describe the surfaces of three-dimensional bosonic point group symmetry protected topological (pgSPT) phases. The anomalous nature of the surface field theories is revealed via a dimensional reduction argument. Specifically, we study three different surface field theories. The first field theory is quantum electrodynamics in three space-time dimensions (QED3) with four flavors of fermions. We show this theory can describe the surfaces of a majority of bosonic pgSPT phases protected by a single mirror reflection, or by $C_{nv}$ point group symmetry for $n=2,3,4,6…
We construct an exactly solvable commuting projector model for a $4+1$ dimensional ${\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry-protected topological phase (SPT) which is outside the cohomology classification of SPTs. The model is described by a decorated domain wall construction, with "three-fermion" Walker-Wang phases on the domain walls. We describe the anomalous nature of the phase in several ways. One interesting feature is that, in contrast to in-cohomology phases, the effective ${\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry on a $3+1$ dimensional boundary cannot be described by a quantum circuit and instead is a nontrivial quan…
We study the braiding statistics of particle-like and loop-like excitations in 2D and 3D gauge theories with finite, Abelian gauge group. The gauge theories that we consider are obtained by gauging the symmetry of gapped, short-range entangled, lattice boson models. We define a set of quantities --- called {\it topological invariants} --- that summarize some of the most important parts of the braiding statistics data for these systems. Conveniently, these invariants are always Abelian phases, even if the gauge theory supports excitations with non-Abelian statistics. We compute these invariants…
Symmetry protected topological phases (SPTs) have universal degeneracies in the entanglement spectrum in one dimension (1D). Here, we formulate this phenomenon in the framework of symmetry-resolved entanglement (SRE) using cohomology theory. We develop a general approach to compute entanglement measures of SPTs in any dimension and specifically SRE via a discrete path integral on multi-sheet Riemann surfaces with generalized defects. The resulting path integral is expressed in terms of group cocycles describing the topological actions of SPTs. Their cohomology classification allows to identify…
It is demonstrated by explicit construction that three-dimensional bosonic crystalline symmetry protected topological (cSPT) phases are classified by $H_ϕ^{5}(G;\mathbb{Z})\oplus H_ϕ^{1}(G;\mathbb{Z})$ for all 230 space groups $G$, where $H^n_ϕ(G;\mathbb{Z})$ denotes the $n$th twisted group cohomology of $G$ with $\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients, and $ϕ$ indicates that $g\in G$ acts non-trivially on coefficients by sending them to their inverses if $g$ reverses spacetime orientation and acts trivially otherwise. The previously known summand $H_ϕ^{5}(G;\mathbb{Z})$ corresponds only to crystalline phas…
Symmetry protected topological states cannot be deformed to a trivial state so long as the symmetry is preserved, yet there is no local order parameter that can distinguish them from a trivial state. We demonstrate how to detect whether a two dimensional ground state has symmetry protected topological order; the measurements play a similar role as the topological entanglement entropy does for detecting anyons. For any finite abelian onsite symmetry, the measurement completely determines the 3rd cohomology class that characterizes the order. The proposed measurement is validated numerically usi…
Quantum phase transitions out of a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase in (1+1) dimensions into an adjacent, topologically distinct SPT phase protected by the same symmetry or a trivial gapped phase, are typically described by a conformal field theory (CFT). At the same time, the low-lying entanglement spectrum of a gapped phase close to such a quantum critical point is known(Cho et al., arXiv:1603.04016), very generally, to be universal and described by (gapless) boundary conformal field theory. Using this connection we show that symmetry properties of the boundary conditions in bounda…
Abelian Chern-Simons theory, characterized by the so-called $K$ matrix, has been quite successful in characterizing and classifying Abelian fractional quantum hall effect (FQHE) as well as symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, especially for bosonic SPT phases. However, there are still some puzzles in dealing with fermionic SPT(fSPT) phases. In this paper, we utilize the Abelian Chern-Simons theory to study the fSPT phases protected by arbitrary Abelian total symmetry $G_f$. Comparing to the bosonic SPT phases, fSPT phases with Abelian total symmetry $G_f$ has three new features: (1) it…
We review the dimensional reduction procedure in the group cohomology classification of bosonic SPT phases with finite abelian unitary symmetry group. We then extend this to include general reductions of arbitrary dimensions and also extend the procedure to fermionic SPT phases described by the Gu-Wen super-cohomology model. We then show that we can define topological invariants as partition functions on certain closed orientable/spin manifolds equipped with a flat connection. The invariants are able to distinguish all phases described within the respective models. Finally, we establish a conn…
We derive a necessary and sufficient criterion for when a two dimensional gapped many-body system with Abelian anyons and a unitary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry has a protected gapless edge mode. Our criterion is phrased in terms of edge theories --- or more specifically, chiral boson edge theories with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry --- and it applies to any bosonic or fermionic system whose boundary can be described by such an edge theory. At an operational level, our criterion takes as input a chiral boson edge theory with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, and then produces as output a prediction as to whether …
Dijkgraaf-Witten (DW) theories are of recent interest to the condensed matter community, in part because they represent topological phases of matter, but also because they characterize the response theory of certain symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases. However, as yet there has not been a comprehensive treatment of the spectra of these models in the field theoretic setting -- the goal of this work is to fill the gap in the literature, at least for a selection of DW models with abelian gauge groups but non-abelian topological order. As applications, various correlation functions and fus…
The challenge of identifying symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs) is due to their lack of symmetry-breaking order parameters and intrinsic topological orders. For this reason, it is impossible to formulate SPTs under Ginzburg-Landau theory or probe SPTs via fractionalized bulk excitations and topology-dependent ground state degeneracy. However, the partition functions from path integrals with various symmetry twists are the universal SPT invariants defining topological probe responses, fully characterizing SPTs. In this work, we use gauge fields to represent those symmetry twists in cl…
Symmetry-protected phases are gapped phases of matter which are distinguished only in the presence of a global symmetry G. These quantum phases lack any symmetry-breaking or topological order, and have short-range entangled ground states. Based on this short-range entanglement property, we give a general argument for the existence of an emergent unitary or anti-unitary $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry at a critical point separating two different bosonic symmetry-protected phases in any dimension. Often, the emergent symmetry group at criticality has a mixed global anomaly. For those phases classified b…

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with unusual edge excitations can emerge in strongly interacting bosonic systems and are classified in terms of the cohomology of their symmetry groups. Here we provide a physical picture that leads to an intuitive understanding and wavefunctions for several SPT phases in d=1,2,3 dimensions. We consider symmetries which include a Z_2 subgroup, that allows us to define domain walls. While the usual disordered phase is obtained by proliferating domain walls, we show that SPT phases are realized when these proliferated domain walls are `decorated', i.e.…
Edge theories of symmetry-protected topological phases are well-known to possess global symmetry anomalies. In this work we focus on two-dimensional bosonic phases protected by an on-site symmetry and analyse the corresponding edge anomalies in more detail. Physical interpretations of the anomaly in terms of an obstruction to orbifolding and constructing symmetry-preserving boundaries are connected to the cohomology classification of symmetry-protected phases in two dimensions. Using the tensor network and matrix product state formalism we numerically illustrate our arguments and discuss compu…
It has been shown that the L-type bosonic symmetry-protected-trivial (SPT) phases with pure gauge anomalous boundary can all be realized via non-linear $σ$-models (NL$σ$Ms) of the symmetry group $G$ with various topological terms. Those SPT phases (called the pure SPT phases) can be classified by group cohomology ${\cal H}^d(G,\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$. But there are also SPT phases with mixed gauge-gravity anomalous boundary (which will be called the mixed SPT phases). Some of the mixed SPT states were also referred as the beyond-group-cohomology SPT states. In this paper, we show that those be…
A number of proposals with differing predictions (e.g. Borel group cohomology, oriented cobordism, group supercohomology, spin cobordism, etc.) have been made for the classification of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases. Here we treat various proposals on an equal footing and present rigorous, general results that are independent of which proposal is correct. We do so by formulating a minimalist Generalized Cohomology Hypothesis, which is satisfied by existing proposals and captures essential aspects of SPT classification. From this Hypothesis alone, formulas relating classifications …
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states are short-range entangled states with a symmetry G. They belong to a new class of quantum states of matter which are classified by the group cohomology $H^{d+1}(G,\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ in d-dimensional space. In this paper, we propose a class of symmetry- protected topological invariants that may allow us to fully characterize SPT states with a symmetry group G (ie allow us to measure the cocycles in $H^{d+1}(G,\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})$ that characterize the SPT states). We give an explicit and detailed construction of symmetry-protected topological …
In recent years, great success has been achieved on the classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases for interacting fermion systems by using generalized cohomology theory. However, the explicit calculation of generalized cohomology theory is extremely hard due to the difficulty of computing obstruction functions. In this paper, based on the physical picture of topological invariants and mathematical techniques in homotopy algebra, we develop an algorithm to resolve this hard problem. It is well known that cochains in the cohomology of the symmetry group, which are used to enu…
Matrix Product States (MPSs) provide a powerful framework to study and classify gapped quantum phases --symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in particular--defined in one dimensional lattices. On the other hand, it is natural to expect that gapped quantum phases in the limit of zero correlation length are described by topological quantum field theories (TFTs or TQFTs). In this paper, for (1+1)-dimensional bosonic SPT phases protected by symmetry $G$, we bridge their descriptions in terms of MPSs, and those in terms of $G$-equivariant TFTs. In particular, for various topological invarian…
Classification and construction of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting boson and fermion systems have become a fascinating theoretical direction in recent years. It has been shown that the (generalized) group cohomology theory or cobordism theory can give rise to a complete classification of SPT phases in interacting boson/spin systems. Nevertheless, the construction and classification of SPT phases in interacting fermion systems are much more complicated, especially in 3D. In this work, we revisit this problem based on the equivalent class of fermionic symmetric local u…
We classify Bosonic Topological Insulators and Paramagnets in D<=4 spatial dimensions using the cobordism approach. For D<4 we confirm that the only such phase which does not fit into the group cohomology classification is the 3D Bosonic Topological Insulator protected by time-reversal symmetry whose surface admits an all-fermion topologically ordered state. For D=4 there is a unique "beyond group cohomology" phase. It is protected by gravitational anomalies of the boundary theory and is stable without any additional symmetry.
Dynamical systems may host a number of remarkable symmetry-protected phases that are qualitatively different from their static analogs. In this work, we consider the phase space of symmetry-respecting unitary evolutions in detail and identify several distinct classes of evolution that host novel dynamical order. Using ideas from group cohomology, we construct a set of interacting Floquet drives that generate dynamical symmetry-protected topological order for each nontrivial cohomology class in every dimension, illustrating our construction with explicit two-dimensional examples. We also identi…
We propose a method for analyzing two-dimensional symmetry protected topological (SPT) wavefunctions using a correspondence with conformal field theories (CFTs) and integrable lattice models. This method generalizes the CFT approach for the fractional quantum Hall effect wherein the wavefunction amplitude is written as a many-operator correlator in the CFT. Adopting a bottom-up approach, we start from various known microscopic wavefunctions of SPTs with discrete symmetries and show how the CFT description emerges at large scale, thereby revealing a deep connection between group cocyles and cri…
We make a systematic study of symmetry-protected topological gapped phases of quantum spin chains in the presence of the frieze space groups in one dimension using matrix product states. Here, the spatial symmetries of the one-dimensional lattice are considered together with an additional 'vertical reflection', which we take to be an on-site $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We identify seventeen distinct non-trivial phases, define canonical forms, and compare the topological indices obtained from the MPS analysis with the group cohomological predictions. We furthermore construct explicit renormalizati…
We consider a weakly coupled gauge theory where charged particles all have large gaps (ie no Higgs condensation to break the gauge "symmetry") and the field strength fluctuates only weakly. We ask what kind of topological terms can be added to the Lagrangian of such a weakly coupled gauge theory. In this paper, we systematically construct quantized topological terms which are generalization of the Chern-Simons terms and $F\wedge F$ terms, in space-time dimensions $d$ and for any gauge groups (continuous or discrete), using each element of the topological cohomology classes $H^{d+1}(BG,\Z)$ on …
We present systematic constructions of tensor-network wavefunctions for bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases respecting both onsite and spatial symmetries. From the classification point of view, our results show that in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$, the cohomological bosonic SPT phases protected by a general symmetry group $SG$ involving onsite and spatial symmetries are classified by the cohomology group $H^{d+1}(SG,U(1))$, in which both the time-reversal symmetry and mirror reflection symmetries should be treated as anti-unitary operations. In addition, for every SPT phase pro…
Motivated by recent studies of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, we explore the possible gapless quantum disordered phases in the $(2+1)d$ nonlinear sigma model defined on the Grassmannian manifold $\frac{U(N)}{U(n)\times U(N - n)}$ with a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term at level $k$, which is the effective low energy field theory of the boundary of certain $(3+1)d$ SPT states. With $k = 0$, this model has a well-controlled large-$N$ limit, $i.e.$ its renormalization group equations can be computed exactly with large-$N$. However, with the WZW term, the large-$N$ and large-$k$ limit a…
Bosonic topological insulators (BTI) in three dimensions are symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) protected by time-reversal and boson number conservation {symmetries}. BTI in three dimensions were first proposed and classified by the group cohomology theory which suggests two distinct root states, each carrying a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index. Soon after, surface anomalous topological orders were proposed to identify different root states of BTI, which even leads to a new BTI root state beyond the group cohomology classification. In this paper, we propose a universal physical mechanism via \tex…
We generalize Laughlin's flux insertion argument, originally discussed in the context of the quantum Hall effect, to topological phases protected by non-on-site unitary symmetries, in particular by parity symmetry or parity symmetry combined with an on-site unitary symmetry. As a model, we discuss fermionic or bosonic systems in two spatial dimensions with CP symmetry, which are, by the CPT theorem, related to time-reversal symmetric topological insulators (e.g., the quantum spin Hall effect). In particular, we develop the stability/instability (or "gappability"/"ingappablity") criteria for no…
We study 't Hooft anomalies for discrete global symmetries in bosonic theories in 2, 3 and 4 dimensions. We show that such anomalies may arise in gauge theories with topological terms in the action, if the total symmetry group is a nontrivial extension of the global symmetry by the gauge symmetry. Sometimes the 't Hooft anomaly for a d-dimensional theory with a global symmetry G can be canceled by anomaly inflow from a (d+1)-dimensional topological gauge theory with gauge group G. Such d-dimensional theories can live on the surfaces of Symmetry Protected Topological Phases. We also give exampl…
Symmetry-resolved entanglement is a useful tool for characterizing symmetry-protected topological states. In two dimensions, their entanglement spectra are described by conformal field theories but the symmetry resolution is largely unexplored. However, addressing this problem numerically requires system sizes beyond the reach of exact diagonalization. Here, we develop tensor network methods that can access much larger systems and determine universal and nonuniversal features in their entanglement. Specifically, we construct one-dimensional matrix product operators that encapsulate all the ent…
We study restrictions on locality-preserving unitary logical gates for topological quantum codes in two spatial dimensions. A locality-preserving operation is one which maps local operators to local operators --- for example, a constant-depth quantum circuit of geometrically local gates, or evolution for a constant time governed by a geometrically-local bounded-strength Hamiltonian. Locality-preserving logical gates of topological codes are intrinsically fault tolerant because spatially localized errors remain localized, and hence sufficiently dilute errors remain correctable. By invoking gene…
In the framework of Atiyah's axioms of topological quantum field theory with unitarity, we give a direct proof of the fact that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases without Hall effects are classified by cobordism invariants. We first show that the partition functions of those theories are cobordism invariants after a tuning of the Euler term. Conversely, for a given cobordism invariant, we construct a unitary topological field theory whose partition function is given by the cobordism invariant. Two theories having the same cobordism invariant partition functions are isomorphic.
We study discrete symmetries of Dijkgraaf-Witten theories and their gauging in the framework of (extended) functorial quantum field theory. Non-abelian group cohomology is used to describe discrete symmetries and we derive concrete conditions for such a symmetry to admit 't Hooft anomalies in terms of the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence. We give an explicit realization of a discrete gauge theory with 't Hooft anomaly as a state on the boundary of a higher-dimensional Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. This allows us to calculate the 2-cocycle twisting the projective representation of physical …
The interplay of symmetry, topology, and many-body effects in the classification of possible phases of matter poses a formidable challenge that is attracting great attention in condensed-matter physics. Such many-body effects are typically induced by inter-particle interactions involving an action at a distance, such as the Coulomb interaction between electrons in a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. In this work, we show that similar phenomena also appear in high-energy physics, where inter-particle interactions are mediated by gauge bosons, and constrained by a local gauge symmetry.…
We put the theory of interacting topological crystalline phases on a systematic footing. These are topological phases protected by space-group symmetries. Our central tool is an elucidation of what it means to "gauge" such symmetries. We introduce the notion of a "crystalline topological liquid", and argue that most (and perhaps all) phases of interest are likely to satisfy this criterion. We prove a Crystalline Equivalence Principle, which states that in Euclidean space, crystalline topological liquids with symmetry group $G$ are in one-to-one correspondence with topological phases protected …
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$, which can all be smoothly connected to the trivial product states if we break the symmetry. It has been shown that a large class of interacting bosonic SPT phases can be systematically described by group cohomology theory. In this paper, we introduce a (special) group supercohomology theory which is a generalization of the standard group cohomology theory. We show that a large class of short-range interacting fermionic SPT phases can be described by the group supercohomology theory.…
Twisting symmetries provides an efficient method to diagnose symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. In this paper, edge theories of (2+1)-dimensional topological phases protected by reflection as well as other symmetries are studied by twisting reflection symmetry, which effectively puts the edge theories on an unoriented spacetime, such as the Klein bottle. A key technical step taken in this paper is the use of the so-called cross-cap states, which encode entirely the unoriented nature of spacetime, and can be obtained by rearranging the spacetime geometry and exchanging the role of spa…
Quantum-disordering a discrete-symmetry breaking state by condensing domain-walls can lead to a trivial symmetric insulator state. In this work, we show that if we bind a 1D representation of the symmetry (such as a charge) to the intersection point of several domain walls, condensing such modified domain-walls can lead to a non-trivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state. This result is obtained by showing that the modified domain-wall condensed state has a non-trivial SPT invariant -- the symmetry-twist dependent partition function. We propose two different kinds of field theories tha…
