In this article we study the inverse problem of recovering a space-dependent coefficient of the Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equation, from knowledge of the trace of the solution on some open subset of the boundary. We obtain the Lipschitz stability for this inverse problem, and we design a convergent algorithm for the reconstruction of the unknown coefficient. The techniques used are based on Carleman inequalities for wave equations and properties of the MGT equation.
The three concepts of exact, null and approximate controllabilities are analyzed from the exterior of the Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation associated with the fractional Laplace operator subject to the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet type exterior condition.
In this paper, we consider several time-fractional generalizations of the Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson (JMGT) equations in nonlinear acoustics as well as their linear Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) versions. Following the procedure described in Jordan (2014), these time-fractional acoustic equations are derived from four fractional versions of the Maxwell-Cattaneo law in Compte and Metzler (1997). Additionally to providing well-posedness results for each of them, we also study the respective limits as the fractional order tends to one, leading to the classical third order in time (J)MGT equation.
We are interested in the Moore-Gibson-Thompson(MGT) equation with memory \begin{equation}\nonumber τu_{ttt}+ αu_{tt}+c^2\A u+b\A u_t -\int_0^tg(t-s)\A w(s)ds=0. \end{equation} We first classify the memory into three types. Then we study how a memory term creates damping mechanism and how the memory causes energy decay.
We prove global solvability of the third-order in time Jordan-More-Gibson-Thompson acoustic wave equation with memory in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $n \geq 3$. This wave equation models ultrasonic propagation in relaxing hereditary fluids and incorporates both local and cumulative nonlinear effects. The proof of global solvability is based on a sequence of high-order energy bounds that are uniform in time, and derived under the assumption of an exponentially decaying memory kernel and sufficiently small and regular initial data.
We study a temporally third order (Moore-Gibson-Thompson) equation with a memory term. Previously it is known that, in non-critical regime, the global solutions exist and the energy functionals decay to zero. More precisely, it is known that the energy has exponential decay if the memory kernel decays exponentially. The current work is a generalization of the previous one (Part I) in that it allows the memory kernel to be more general and shows that the energy decays the same way as the memory kernel does, exponentially or not.
The Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation is analyzed. With the focus on non-homogeneous boundary data, two approaches are offered: one is based on the theory of hyperbolic equations, while the other one uses the theory of operator semigroups. This is a mixed hyperbolic problem with a characteristic spatial boundary. Hence, the regularity results exhibit some deficiencies when compared with the non-characteristic case.
In this paper, we consider the 3D Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation arising in nonlinear acoustics. First, we prove that the solution exists globally in time provided that the lower order Sobolev norms of the initial data are considered to be small, while the higher-order norms can be arbitrarily large. This improves some available results in the literature. Second, we prove a new decay estimate for the linearized model and removing the $L^1$-assumption on the initial data. The proof of this decay estimate is based on the high-frequency and low-frequency decomposition of the solution to…
We study the Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson (JMGT) equation, a third order in time wave equation that models nonlinear sound propagation, in the practically relevant setting of Neumann and absorbing boundary conditions. In the analysis, we pay special attention to dependencies on the coefficient $τ$ of the third order time derivative that plays the physical role of relaxation time. We establish local in time well-posedness and derive energy bounds that can be made independent of $τ$ under appropriate conditions. This fact allows us to pass to the limit $τ\to0$ and recover solutions of a class…
In this paper, we study the blow-up of solutions to the semilinear Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equation with nonlinearity of derivative type $|u_t|^p$ in the conservative case. We apply an iteration method in order to study both the subcritical case and the critical case. Hence, we obtain a blow-up result for the semilinear MGT equation (under suitable assumptions for initial data) when the exponent $p$ for the nonlinear term satisfies $1<p\leqslant (n+1)/(n-1)$ for $n\geqslant2$ and $p>1$ for $n=1$. In particular, we find the same blow-up range for $p$ as in the corresponding semilinear wave …
The family of Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson (JMGT) equations arises in nonlinear acoustics when a relaxed version of the heat flux law is employed within the system of governing equations of sound motion. Motivated by the propagation of sound waves in complex media with anomalous diffusion, we consider here a generalized class of such equations involving two (weakly) singular memory kernels in the principal and non-leading terms. To relate them to the second-order wave equations, we investigate their vanishing relaxation time behavior. The key component of this singular limit analysis are the u…
In this paper, we consider the Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation, a third order in time wave equation describing the nonlinear propagation of sound that avoids the infinite signal speed paradox of classical second order in time strongly damped models of nonlinear acoustics, such as the Westervelt and the Kuznetsov equation. We show well-posedness in an acoustic velocity potential formulation with and without gradient nonlinearity, corresponding to the Kuznetsov and the Westervelt nonlinearities, respectively. Moreover, we consider the limit as the parameter of the third order time derivati…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the linear and semilinear Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equation in the dissipative case. Concerning the linear MGT model, by utilizing WKB analysis associated with Fourier analysis, we derive some $L^2$ estimates of solutions, which improve those in the previous research [46]. Furthermore, asymptotic profiles of the solution and an approximate relation in a framework of the weighted $L^1$ space are derived. Next, with the aid of the classical energy method and Hardy's inequality, we get singular limit results for an energy and the solution itself. …
In this work, the Cauchy problem for the semilinear Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equation with power nonlinearity $|u|^p$ on the right-hand side is studied. Applying $L^2-L^2$ estimates and a fixed point theorem, we obtain local (in time) existence of solutions to the semilinear MGT equation. Then, the blow-up of local in time solutions is proved by using an iteration method, under certain sign assumption for initial data, and providing that the exponent of the power of the nonlinearity fulfills $1 < p \leqslant p_{\mathrm{Str}}(n)$ for $n \geqslant2$ and $p>1$ for $n=1$. Here the Strauss expon…
In acoustics, higher-order-in-time equations arise when taking into account a class of thermal relaxation laws in the modeling of sound wave propagation. In this work, we analyze initial boundary value problems for a family of such equations and determine the behavior of solutions as the relaxation time vanishes. In particular, we allow the leading term to be of fractional type. The studied model can be viewed as a generalization of the well-established (fractional) Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation with three, in general nonlocal, convolution terms involving two different kernels. The interpla…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of a model in nonlinear acoustic, named the Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation. This equation arises as an alternative model to the well-known Kuznetsov equation in acoustics. We prove global existence and optimal time decay of solutions in Besov spaces with a minimal regularity assumption on the initial data, lowering the regularity assumption required in \cite{Racke_Said_2019} for the proof of the global existence. Using a time-weighted energy method with the help of appropriate Lyapunov-type estimates, we also extend the decay rate in \cit…
We undertake a regularity analysis of the solutions to initial/boundary value problems for the (third-order in time) Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equation. The key to the present investigation is that the MGT equation falls within a large class of systems with memory, with affine term depending on a parameter. For this model equation a regularity theory is provided, which is of also independent interest; it is shown in particular that the effect of boundary data that are square integrable (in time and space) is the same displayed by wave equations. Then, a general picture of the (interior) regu…
In this paper, we study the Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which is a third order in time equation that arises in viscous thermally relaxing fluids and also in viscoelastic materials (then under the name of \emph{standard linear viscoelastic} model). First, we use some Lyapunov functionals in the Fourier space to show that, under certain assumptions on some parameters in the equation, an energy norm related with the solution decays with a rate $(1+t)^{-N/4}$. But this does not give the decay rate of the solution itself. Hence, in the second part of the paper, we show an ex…
Moore-Gibson-Thompson (MGT) equations, which describe acoustic waves in a heterogeneous medium, are considered. These are the third order in time evolutions of a predominantly hyperbolic type. MGT models account for a finite speed propagation due to the appearance of thermal relaxation coefficient τ {>} {0} in front of the third order time derivative. Since the values of τ are relatively small and often negligible, it is important to understand the asymptotic behavior and characteristics of the model when τ {\to} {0}. This is a particularly delicate issue since the τ- dynamics is governed by a…
We consider the MGT equation with memory $$\partial_{ttt} u + α\partial_{tt} u - βΔ\partial_{t} u - γΔu + \int_{0}^{t}g(s) Δu(t-s) ds = 0.$$ We prove an existence and uniqueness result removing the convexity assumption on the convolution kernel $g$, usually adopted in the literature. In the subcritical case $αβ>γ$, we establish the exponential decay of the energy, without leaning on the classical differential inequality involving $g$ and its derivative $g'$, namely, $$g'+δg\leq 0,\quadδ>0,$$ but only asking that $g$ vanishes exponentially fast.
Global in-time existence of solutions for the complex-valued Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equations of Westervelt-type under different conditions on initial data
The (third-order in time) JMGT equation \cite{Jordan2,HCP} is a nonlinear (quasi-linear) Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model introduced to describe a nonlinear propagation of sound in an acoustic medium. The important feature is that the model avoids the infinite speed of propagation paradox associated with a classical second order in time equation referred to as Westervelt equation. Replacing Fourier's law by Maxwell-Cattaneo's law gives rise to the third order in time derivative scaled by a small parameter $τ>0$, the latter represents the thermal relaxation time parameter and is intrin…
The Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson (JMGT)\cite{christov_heat_2005,jordan_nonlinear_2008,straughan_heat_2014} equation is a benchmark model describing propagation of nonlinear acoustic waves in heterogeneous fluids at rest. This is a third-order (in time) dynamics which accounts for a finite speed of propagation of heat signals (see \cite{coulouvrat_equations_1992,crighton_model_1979,jordan_nonlinear_2008,jordan_second-sound_2014,kaltenbacher_jordan-moore-gibson-thompson_2019}). In this paper, we study a boundary stabilization of linearized version (also known as MGT-equation) in the {\it critica…
In this paper, we are interested in the Cauchy problem for the viscoelastic damped wave equation with memory of type I. By applying WKB analysis and Fourier analysis, we explain the memory's influence on dissipative structures and asymptotic profiles of solutions to the model with weighted $L^1$ initial data. Furthermore, concerning standard energy and the solution itself, we establish singular limit relations between the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation with memory and the viscoelastic damped wave equation with memory.
The Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson (JMGT) equation is a well-established and recently widely studied model for nonlinear acoustics (NLA). It is a third-order (in time) semilinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model with the distinctive feature of predicting the propagation of ultrasound waves at \textit{finite} speed due to heat phenomenon know as \textit{second sound} which leads to the hyperbolic character of heat propagation. In this paper, we consider the problem of stabilizability of the linear (known as) MGT--equation. We consider a special geometry that is suitable for studying t…
Classical models for the propagation of ultrasound waves are the Westervelt equation, the Kuznetsov and the Khokhlov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov equations. The Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation is a prominent example of a Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model which describes the acoustic velocity potential in ultrasound wave propagation, where the paradox of infinite speed of propagation of thermal signals is eliminated; the use of the constitutive Cattaneo law for the heat flux, in place of the Fourier law, accounts for its being of third order in time. Aiming at the understanding of the f…
We consider the Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation with memory of type II $$ \partial_{ttt} u(t) + α\partial_{tt} u(t) + βA \partial_t u(t) + γAu(t)-\int_0^t g(t-s) A \partial_t u(s){\rm d} s=0 $$ where $A$ is a strictly positive selfadjoint linear operator (bounded or unbounded) and $α,β,γ>0$ satisfy the relation $γ\leqαβ$. First, we prove a well-posedness result without requiring any restriction on the total mass $\varrho$ of $g$. Then we show that it is always possible to find memory kernels $g$, complying with the usual mass restriction $\varrho<β$, such that the equation admits solutions with…
Ultrasonic propagation through media with thermal and molecular relaxation can be modeled by third-order in time nonlinear wave-like equations with memory. This paper investigates the asymptotic behavior of a Cauchy problem for such a model, the nonlocal Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation, in the so-called critical case, which corresponds to propagation in inviscid fluids. The memory has an exponentially fading character and type I, meaning that involves only the acoustic velocity potential. A major challenge in the global analysis is that the linearized equation's decay estimates are of…
We address the energy transfer in the differential system $$ \begin{cases} u_{ttt}+αu_{tt} - βΔu_t - γΔu = -ηΔθ\\ θ_t - κΔθ=ηΔu_{tt}+ αηΔu_t \end{cases} $$ made by a Moore-Gibson-Thompson equation in the supercritical regime, hence antidissipative, coupled with the classical heat equation. The asymptotic properties of the related solution semigroup depend on the strength of the coupling, ruling the competition between the Fourier damping and the MGT antidamping. Exponential stability will be shown always to occur, provided that the coupling constant is sufficiently large with respect to the ot…
