Antiferromagnet Mn$_3$P with Neel temperature $T_N=30$ K is composed of Mn-tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exhibiting a quantum critical point at $\sim1.6$ GPa. The remarkable mass renormalization, even in the ordered state, and an incoherent-coherent crossover in the low-temperature region, characterize an unusual electronic state in Mn$_3$P, which is most likely effected by the underlying frustration effect.
The suppression of magnetic order with pressure concomitant with the appearance of pressure- induced superconductivity was recently discovered in CrAs. Here we present a neutron diffraction study of the pressure evolution of the helimagnetic ground-state towards and in the vicinity of the superconducting phase. Neutron diffraction on polycrystalline CrAs was employed from zero pressure to 0.65 GPa and at various temperatures. The helimagnetic long-range order is sustained under pressure and the magnetic propagation vector does not show any considerable change. The average ordered magnetic mome…
We report resistivity measurements of the helimagnet CrAs under pressures. The helimagnetic transition with T_N ~ 265 K at ambient pressure is completely suppressed above a critical pressure of P_c ~ 0.7 GPa, and superconductivity is observed at ~2.2 K for zero resistance, which exists in a wide pressure range extending beyond 3 GPa. Both the upper critical field H_{c2} and the coefficient A in the resistivity increase toward P_c, suggesting that the superconductivity of CrAs is mediated by electronic correlations enhanced in the vicinity of the helimagnetic phase.
Pressure-induced superconductivity was recently discovered in the binary helimagnet CrAs. We report the results of measurements of nuclear quadrupole resonance for CrAs under pressure. In the vicinity of the critical pressure P_c between the helimagnetic (HM) and paramagnetic (PM) phases, a phase separation is observed. The large internal field remaining in the phase-separated HM state indicates that the HM phase disappears through a strong first-order transition. This indicates the absence of a quantum critical point in CrAs; however, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 reveals tha…
We consider nonlocal correlations in iron in the vicinity of the $α$-$γ$ phase transition within the spin-rotationally-invariant dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approach, combined with the recently proposed spin-fermion model of iron. The obtained nonlocal corrections to DMFT yield a decrease of the Curie temperature of the $α$ phase, leading to an agreement with its experimental value. We show that the corresponding nonlocal corrections to the energy of the $α$ phase are crucially important to obtain the proximity of energies of $α$ and $γ$ phases in the vicinity of the iron $α$-$γ$ transf…
The chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 has been investigated by magnetic, transport and thermal properties measurements on single crystals and by first principles electronic structure calculations. From the measured field and temperature dependence of the magnetization for fields applied perpendicular to the c axis, the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed in the vicinity of the phase transitions. A transition from a paramagnetic to a magnetically ordered phase occurs near 120 K. With increasing magnetic field and at temperatures below 120 K, this material undergoes transitions from a helimagn…
We grew thin films of a heavy fermion chiral magnet YbNi$_3$Al$_9$ by using molecular beam epitaxy. They were grown on $c$-plane sapphire substrates under ultra-high vacuum while maintaining a deposition rate at a stoichiometric ratio among Yb, Ni, and Al. The resulting thin films contain epitaxial grains with a $c$ axis parallel to the substrate surface: The YbNi$_3$Al$_9$ $c$ axis is parallel to the sapphire $b$ or $a$ axis. The temperature dependence of the resistivity exhibits a typical feature of a dense Kondo system with a broad shoulder structure at $\sim$40\,K, as well as a kink as a s…
We consider two immobile spin $1/2$ fermions in a two-dimensional magnetic system that is close to the $ O(3)$ magnetic quantum critical point (QCP) which separates magnetically ordered and disordered phases. Focusing on the disordered phase in the vicinity of the QCP, we demonstrate that the criticality results in a strong long range attraction between the fermions, with potential $V(r) \propto -1/r^ν$, $ν\approx 0.75$, where $r$ is separation between the fermions. The mechanism of the enhanced attraction is similar to Casimir effect and corresponds to multi-magnon exchange processes between …
We investigate the spin-spin correlation functions of Ising magnets at complex values of the temperature, T. For one-dimensional chain and ladder systems, we show the existence of a kind of helimagnetic order in the vicinity of contours where the leading two eigenvalues of the transfer matrix become equal in magnitude. We analyse the development of long-range order as the two-dimensional limit is approached, and find that there is rich structure in much of the complex-T plane. In particular, and contrary to the work of Fisher on this problem, the development of long-range order is actually ass…
We show by a meta-analysis of the available Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results that two-dimensional fermions with repulsive interactions exhibit universal behavior in the strongly-correlated regime, and that their freezing transition can be described using a quantum generalization of the classical Hansen-Verlet freezing criterion. We calculate the liquid-state energy and the freezing point of the 2D dipolar Fermi gas (2DDFG) using a variational method by taking ground state wave functions of 2D electron gas (2DEG) as trial states. A comparison with the recent fixed-node diffusion Monte-Carlo an…
We report neutron diffraction experiments performed in the tetragonal antiferromagnetic heavy fermion system CeRhIn$_{5-x}$Sn$_{x}$ in its ($x$, $T$) phase diagram up to the vicinity of the critical concentration $x_c$ $\approx$ 0.40, where long range magnetic order is suppressed. The propagation vector of the magnetic structure is found to be $\bf{k_{IC}}$=(1/2, 1/2, $k_l$) with $k_l$ increasing from $k_l$=0.298 to $k_l$=0.410 when $x$ increases from $x$=0 to $x$=0.26. Surprisingly, for $x$=0.30, the order has changed drastically and a commensurate antiferromagnetism with $\bf{k_{C}}$=(1/2, 1…
The Boson-Fermion model, describing a mixture of hybridized localized Bosons and itinerant Fermions on a lattice, is known to exhibit spectral properties for the Fermions which upon lowering the temperature develop into a three pole structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level. These spectral features go hand in hand with the opening of a pseudogap in the density of states upon approaching the critical temperature Tc when superconductivity sets in. In the present work we study this model, in the atomic limit where the three pole structure arises naturally from the local bonding, anti-bonding a…
We report far-infrared optical properties of YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ for photon energies down to 2 meV and temperatures 0.4 -- 300 K. In the coherent heavy quasiparticle state, a linear dependence of the low-energy scattering rate on both temperature and photon energy was found. We relate this distinct dynamical behavior different from that of Fermi liquid materials to the non-Fermi liquid nature of YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ which is due to its close vicinity to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.
We develop a composite Dirac fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effects (QHE) near charge neutrality in graphene. We show that the interactions between the composite Dirac fermions lead to dynamical mass generation through exciton condensation. The four-fold spin-valley degeneracy is fully lifted due to the mass generation and the exchange effects such that the odd-denominator fractional QHE observed in the vicinity of charge neutrality can be understood in terms of the integer QHE of the composite Dirac fermions. At the filling factor $ν=1/2$, we show that the massive composite Di…
In this work, the magnetism of the single crystal Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$, which exhibits chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL) state, is investigated. The magnetization displays strong magnetic anisotropy when the field is applied perpendicularly and parallel to the $c$-axis in low field region ($H<H_{S}$, $H_{S}$ is the saturation field). The critical exponents of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$ are obtained as $β=$ 0.370(4), $γ=$ 1.380(2), and $δ=$ 4.853(6), which are close to the theoretical prediction of three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Based on the scaling equation and the critical exponents, the $H-…
Specific heat versus temperature curves for various pressures, or magnetic fields (or some other external control parameter) have been seen to cross at a point or in a very small range of temperatures in many correlated fermion systems. We show that this behavior is related to the vicinity of a quantum critical point in these systems which leads to a crossover at some temperature T^* from quantum to classical fluctuation regime. The temperature at which the curves cross turns out to be near T^*. We have discussed the case of the normal phase of liquid Helium three and the heavy fermion systems…
We study nonanalytic paramagnetic response of an interacting Fermi system both away and in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QCP). Previous studies found that (i) the spin susceptibility scales linearly with either the temperature $T$ or magnetic field H in the weak-coupling regime; (ii) the interaction in the Cooper channel affects this scaling via logarithmic renormalization of prefactors of the $T$, |H| terms, and may even reverse the signs of these terms at low enough energies. We show that Cooper renormalization becomes effective only at very low energies, which ge…
We introduce a two-ladder lattice model with interacting Majorana fermions that could be realized on the surfaces of a topological insulator film. We study this model by a combination of analytical and numerical techniques and find a phase diagram that features both gapless and gapped phases as well as interesting phase transitions including a quantum critical point in the tricritical Ising (TCI) universality class. The latter occurs at an intermediate coupling strength at a meeting point of a first-order transition line and an Ising critical line and is known to be described by a superconform…
High precision measurements of the Hall effect have been carried out for archetypal heavy fermion compound - CeAl3 in a wide range of temperatures 1.8-300K. For the first time a complex activated behavior of the Hall coefficient in CeAl3 with activation energies Ea1/kB=220K and Ea2/kB=3.3K has been observed in the temperature intervals 50-300K and 10-35K respectively. At temperatures below the maximum of the Hall effect T<Tmax=10K an asymptotic dependence RH(T)=exp(-Ea3/kBT) was found in CeAl3 with the value Ea3/kB=0.38K estimated from the experimental data. The temperature evolution of micros…
Here the line shape of the up- and down-spin one-particle spectral functions at and in the (k,energy)-plane's vicinity of their cusp singularities is studied for the Mott-Hubbard insulator described by the 1D Hubbard model with one fermion per site at zero and finite magnetic fields. At zero field they can be accessed in terms of electrons by photoemission experiments. At finite field, such functions and corresponding interplay of correlations and magnetic-field effects refer to an involved non-perturbative many-particle problem that is poorly understood. The Mott-Hubbard gap that separates th…
The scaling of the transition temperature into an ordered phase close to a quantum critical point as well as the order parameter fluctuations inside the quantum critical region provide valuable information about universal properties of the underlying quantum critical point. Here, we employ quantum Monte Carlo simulations to examine these relations in detail for two-dimensional quantum systems that exhibit a finite-temperature Ising-transition line in the vicinity of a quantum critical point that belongs to the universality class of either (i) the three-dimensional Ising model for the case of t…
We analyze the behavior of interacting fermions near a ferromagnetic Stoner instability. We show that the Landau damping of the spin susceptibility is a relevant perturbation near a ferromagnetic quantum-critical point (FQCP). We argue that, as the system approaches a FQCP, the fermionic self-energy crosses over from predominantly momentum dependent away from the transition to predominantly frequency dependent in the immediate vicinity of the transition. We argue that due to this self-generated locality, the quasiparticle effective mass does not diverge before a FQCP is reached.
We study exotic fermions with spectrum E^2 ~ p^{2N}. Such spectrum emerges in the vicinity of the Fermi point with multiple topological charge N, if special symmetry is obeyed. When this symmetry is violated, the multiple Fermi point typically splits into N elementary Fermi points -- Dirac points with N=1 and spectrum E^2 ~ p^2 .
We revisit the dynamic spin susceptibility, $χ(q,ω)$, of one-dimensional interacting fermions. To second order in the interaction, backscattering results in a logarithmic correction to $χ(q,ω)$ at $q\ll k_F$, even if the single-particle spectrum is linearized near the Fermi points. Consequently, the dynamic spin structure factor, $\mathrm{Im}χ(q,ω)$, is non-zero at frequencies above the single-particle continuum. In the boson language, this effect results from the marginally irrelevant backscattering operator of the sine-Gordon model. Away from the threshold, the high-frequency tail of $\mathr…
We study a magnetic field effect on the Non-Fermi Liquid (NFL) which arises around the quantum critical point (QCP) due to the competition between the f^2-crystalline-electric-field singlet and the Kondo-Yosida singlet states by using the numerical renormalization ground method. We show the characteristic temperature T_F^*, corresponding to a peak of a specific heat, is not affected by the magnetic field up to H_z^* which is determined by the distance from the QCP or characteristic energy scales of each singlet states. As a result, in the vicinity of QCP, there are parameter regions where the …
Bicritical points, at which two distinct symmetry-broken phases become simultaneously unstable, are typical for spin-flop metamagnetism. Interestingly, the heavy-fermion compound YbAgGe also possesses such a bicritical point (BCP) with a low temperature T_BCP ~ 0.3 K at a magnetic field of mu_0 H_BCP ~ 4.5 T. In its vicinity, YbAgGe exhibits anomalous behavior that we attribute to the influence of a quantum bicritical point (QBCP), that is close in parameter space yet can be reached by tuning T_BCP further to zero. Using high-resolution measurements of the magnetocaloric effect, we demonstrate…
A systematic analysis of thermodynamic properties performed on Ce-base exemplary compounds allows to identify different types of behaviors as the system approaches the quantum critical region. They are recognized in the respective magnetic phase boundaries (T_{N,C}(x)) as a change from the classical negative curvature to a linear composition ($x$) dependence, the occurrence of a critical point or the evanescence at finite temperature under pressure at finite temperature. In the first case, an anomalous reduction of the entropy S_m respect to the S_m = RLn2 value (expected for the usual Ce-magn…
The dynamical spin susceptibility is studied in the magnetically-disordered phase of heavy-Fermion systems near the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In the framework of the $S=1/2$ Kondo lattice model, we introduce a perturbative expansion treating the spin and Kondo-like degrees of freedom on an equal footing. The general expression of the dynamical spin susceptibility that we derive presents a two-component behaviour: a quasielastic peak as in a Fermi liquid theory, and a strongly q-dependent inelastic peak typical of a non-Fermi liquid behaviour. Very strikingly, the position of …
We describe the dynamics of a single fermion in a dispersionless band coupled to the 2+1 dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) describing the quantum phase transition of a bosonic order parameter with N components. The fermionic spectral functions are expected to apply to the vicinity of quantum critical points in two-dimensional metals over an intermediate temperature regime where the Landau damping of the order parameter can be neglected. Some of our results are obtained by a mapping to an auxiliary problem of a CFT containing a defect line with an external field which locally breaks the …
We report ^{115}In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 as a function of temperature in different magnetic fields applied parallel to the $(\hat a, \hat b)$ plane. The measurements probe a part of the phase diagram in the vicinity of the superconducting critical field H_{c2} where a possible inhomogeneous superconducting state, Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO), is stabilized. We have identified clear NMR signatures of two phase transitions occurring in this part of the phase diagram. The first order phase transitions are characterized…
We study the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice in the vicinity of the quantum critical point by means of a multiband formulation of the Dual Fermion approach. Beyond the strong local correlations of the dynamical mean field, critical fluctuations on all length scales are included by means of a ladder diagram summation. Analysis of the susceptibility yields an estimate of the critical interaction strength of the quantum phase transition from a paramagnetic semimetal to an antiferromagnetic insulator, in good agreement to other numerical methods. We further estimate the crossover temperatur…
The rearrangement of single-particle degrees of freedom of a dilute two-dimensional electron gas in the vicinity of the quantum critical point is examined within a microscopic approach. It is shown that just beyond the critical point, the Landau state undergoes self-consistent rearrangement of the quasiparticle spectrum and momentum distribution. At very low temperatures, there emerges a multi-connected quasiparticle momentum distribution. With increasing temperature, two crossovers occur: a fermion condensate appears in the first and disappears in the second, giving way to universal non-Fermi…
The new Kondo material YbIr$_3$Si$_7$, similar to other Kondo insulators, has been reported to exhibit charge-neutral fermionic excitations through measurements of specific heat and thermal conductivity at low temperatures. We performed $^{29}$Si-NMR on YbIr$_3$Si$_7$ to investigate the magnetic response of charge-neutral fermions from a microscopic perspective. In low magnetic fields parallel to the $c$ axis, a single NMR peak in the paramagnetic state splits into three peaks below $T_{\rm N}$. In contrast, only a slight shift of the single NMR peak was observed in high magnetic fields. This …
Motivated by the unconventional superconductivity observed in heavy-fermion metals, we investigate pairing susceptibilities near a continuous quantum phase transition of the Kondo-destruction type. We solve two-impurity Bose-Fermi Anderson models with Ising and Heisenberg forms of the interimpurity exchange interaction using continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo and numerical renormalization-group methods. Each model exhibits a Kondo-destruction quantum critical point separating Kondo-screened and local-moment phases. For antiferromagnetic interimpurity exchange interactions, singlet pairing is …
Kondo systems ranging from the single Kondo impurity to heavy fermion materials present us with a plethora of unconventional properties whose theoretical understanding is still one of the major open problems in condensed matter physics. Over the last few years, groundbreaking scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) experiments have provided unprecedented new insight into the electronic structure of Kondo systems. Interpreting the results of these experiments -- the differential conductance and the quasi-particle interference spectrum -- however, has been complicated by the fact that electrons tu…
We study the quantum critical behavior in an isotropic Fermi liquid in the vicinity of a zero-temperature density-wave transition at a finite wave vector q_c. We show that, near the transition, the Landau damping of the soft bosonic mode yields a crossover in the fermionic self-energy from Sigma(k,omega) ~ Sigma(k) to Sigma(k,omega) ~ Sigma(omega), where k and omega are momentum and frequency. Because of this self-generated locality, the fermionic effective mass diverges right at the quantum critical point, not before, i.e., the Fermi liquid survives up to the critical point.
Kinetics of phase separation transition in boson-fermion cold atom mixtures is investigated. We identify the parameters at which the transition is governed by quantum nucleation mechanism, responsible for the formation of critical nuclei of a stable phase. We demonstrate that for low fermion-boson mass ratio the density dependence of quantum nucleation transition rate is experimentally observable. The crossover to macroscopic quantum tunneling regime is analyzed. Based on a microscopic description of interacting cold atom boson-fermion mixtures we derive an effective action for the critical dr…
We study the low-energy behavior of metals coupled to gapless bosons. This problem arises in several contexts in modern condensed matter physics; we focus on the theory of metals near continuous quantum phase transitions (where the boson is the order parameter). In the vicinity of d=3 spatial dimensions, the upper critical dimension of the theory, the ratio of fermion and boson speeds, v/c, acts as an additional control parameter, enabling us to access IR fixed points where this ratio vanishes. This limit corresponds to a non-Fermi liquid coupled to bosons with critical exponents governed by t…
We performed elastic neutron scattering experiments on solid solution CeRh1-xCoxIn5 with x=0.4 to clarify the nature of the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase in the vicinity of the quantum critical point. We observed the incommensurate AF order below T_Nh=3.5 K. The structure of the incommensurate AF order is basically unchanged from that for pure CeRhIn5. We further found the evolution of a new commensurate AF order with the modulation of q_c=(1/2,1/2,1/2) below T_Nc=2.9 K. The volume-averaged moments for the incommensurate and commensurate AF phases are 0.38 mu_B/Ce and 0.21 mu_B/Ce, respectively…
The thermoelectric transport properties of nanostructured devices continue to attract attention from theorists and experimentalist alike as the spatial confinement allows for a controlled approach to transport properties of correlated matter. Most of the existing work, however, focuses on thermoelectric transport in the linear regime despite the fact that the nonlinear conductance of correlated quantum dots has been studied in some detail throughout the last decade. Here, we review our recent work on the effect of particle-hole asymmetry on the nonlinear transport properties in the vicinity of…
We discuss the finite temperature properties of the fermion correlation function near the fixed point theory of the nematic quantum critical point (QCP) of a metallic Fermi system. We show that though the fixed point theory is above its upper critical dimension, the equal time fermion correlation function takes on a universal scaling form in the vicinity of the QCP. We find that in the quantum critical regime, this equal-time correlation function has an ultra local behavior in space, while the low-frequency behavior of the equal-position auto correlation function is that of a Fermi liquid up t…
The quantum critical point (QCP) in the archetypical heavy-fermion compound CeCu$_6$ doped by Au is described, accounting for the localized $4f$-electron of Ce, using realistic electronic structure calculations combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Magnetism trends in Ce(Cu$_{1-ε}$Au$_ε$)$_6$ are compared with those in Co-doped CeCu$_{5}$, which resides on the non-ferromagnetic side of the composition space of one of the earliest rare-earth permanent magnet compounds, Ce(Co,Cu)$_5$. The construction of a realistic Doniach phase diagram shows that the system crosses over a magnetic …
The work presents experimental results of precision magnetoresistance dr(H,T) measurements obtained for canonical heavy fermion compounds CeAl2, CeAl3, CeCu6 and substitutional solid solutions CeCu6-xAux (x=0.1 and 0.2) and Ce(Al0.95M0.05)2 (M - Co, Ni). The research was performed in a wide range of temperatures (1.8-30K) and magnetic fields (up to 80 kOe). The data analysis indicates that the most consistent interpretation of magnetoresistance of both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered Ce-based systems with strong electron correlations can be obtained through the approach developed by K.Yo…
The fractional quantum Hall effect has inspired searches for exotic emergent topological particles, such as fractionally charged excitations, composite fermions, abelian and nonabelian anyons and Majorana fermions. Fractionally charged skyrmions, which support both topological charge and topological vortex-like spin structure, have also been predicted to occur in the vicinity of 1/3 filling of the lowest Landau level. The fractional skyrmions, however, are anticipated to be exceedingly fragile, suppressed by very small Zeeman energies. Here we show that, slightly away from 1/3 filling, the sma…
We study an extended SU(N) single-impurity Kondo model in which the impurity spin is described by a combination of Abrikosov fermions and Schwinger bosons. Our aim is to describe both the quasiparticle-like excitations and the locally critical modes observed in various physical situations, including non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior in heavy fermions in the vicinity of a quantum critical point and anomalous transport properties in quantum wires. In contrast with models with either pure bosonic or pure fermionic impurities, the strong coupling fixed point is unstable against the conduction electr…
Non-Fermi liquids are strange metals whose physical properties deviate qualitatively from those of conventional metals due to strong quantum fluctuations. In this paper, we report transport measurements on the FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ superconductor, which has a quantum critical point of a nematic order without accompanying antiferromagnetism. We find that in addition to a linear-in-temperature resistivity $ρ_{xx}\propto T$, which is close to the Planckian limit, the Hall angle varies as $\cot θ_{\rm H} \propto T^2$ and the low-field magnetoresistance is well scaled as $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2 θ…
We perform a non-perturbative analysis of the strong interaction between gapless nodal fermions and the nematic order parameter in two-dimensional d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. We predict that the critical nematic fluctuation can generate a dynamical nodal gap if the fermion flavor N is smaller than a threshold N_c. Such gap generation leads to an additional is-wave Cooper pairing instability, which induces a fully gapped d_{x^2-y^2}+is superconducting dome in the vicinity of the nematic quantum critical point. The opening of a dynamical gap has important consequences, including the saturation …
The problem of pairing in anisotropic electron systems possessing patches of fermion condensate in the vicinity of the van Hove points is analyzed. Attention is directed to opportunities for the occurrence of non-BCS pairing correlations between the states belonging to the fermion condensate. It is shown that the physical emergence of such pairing correlations would drastically alter the behavior of the single-particle Green function, the canonical pole of Fermi-liquid theory being replaced by a branch point.
We study theoretically many-body equilibrium magnetic phases and corresponding thermodynamic characteristics of ultracold three-component fermionic mixtures in optical lattices described by the SU(3)-symmetric single-band Hubbard model. Our analysis is based on the generalization of the exact diagonalization solver for multicomponent mixtures that is used in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory. It allows us to obtain a finite-temperature phase diagram with the corresponding transition lines to magnetically ordered phases at filling one particle per site (1/3 band filling) in simpl…
The quasi-one-dimensional chiral charge density wave (CDW) material (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I has been recently predicted to host Kramers-Weyl (KW) fermions which should exist in the vicinity of high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone in chiral materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. However, direct spectroscopic evidence of KW fermions is limited. Here we use helicity-dependent laser-based angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in conjunction with tight-binding and first-principles calculations to identify KW fermions in (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I. We find that topological and symmetry considerat…
Fermionic superfluids can undergo phase transitions into different kinds of normal regimes, loosely characterized by whether Cooper pairs remain locally stable. If the normal phase retains strong pairing fluctuations, it behaves like a liquid of vortices, which has been observed in cuprate superconductors. We argue that analogous strongly correlated normal states exist in two-dimensional neutral fermion liquids near unitarity, where superfluid is destroyed by fast rotation. These states have non-universal properties, and if they develop as distinct thermodynamic phases they can be characterize…
We report results of magneto-acoustic studies in the quantum spin-chain magnet NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) having a field-induced ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. In the vicinity of the quantum critical points (QCPs) the acoustic $c_{33}$ mode manifests a pronounced softening accompanied by energy dissipation of the sound wave. The acoustic anomalies are traced up to $T > T_N$, where the thermodynamic properties are determined by fermionic magnetic excitations, the "hallmark" of one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. On the other hand, as established in earlier studies, the AF phase in DTN …
We describe the quantum phase transition of a Fermi gas occurring when the quasiparticle excitation energy has a minimum in momentum space which crosses zero on a sphere of radius k_0 \neq 0. The quasiparticles have a universal interaction which controls the physical properties in vicinity of the quantum critical point. We discuss applications to fermionic superfluids formed by pairing two fermion species, near the point where the densities of the two species become unequal.
This review summarizes recent developments in the study of fermionic quantum criticality, focusing on new progress in numerical methodologies, especially quantum Monte Carlo methods, and insights that emerged from recently large-scale numerical simulations. Quantum critical phenomena in fermionic systems have attracted decades of extensive research efforts, partially lured by their exotic properties and potential technology applications and partially awaked by the profound and universal fundamental principles that govern these quantum critical systems. Due to the complex and non-perturbative n…
We study finite-temperature properties of ultracold four-component mixtures of alkaline-earth-like atoms in optical lattices that can be effectively described by the two-band spin-$1/2$ Hubbard model including the Hund's exchange coupling term. Our main goal is to investigate the effect of exchange interactions on finite-temperature magnetic phases for a wide range of lattice fillings. We use the dynamical mean-field theory approach and its real-space generalization to obtain finite-temperature phase diagrams including transitions to magnetically-ordered phases. It allows to determine optimal …
We perform a detailed comparison of the Dirac composite fermion and the recently proposed bimetric theory for a quantum Hall Jain states near half filling. By tuning the composite Fermi liquid to the vicinity of a nematic phase transition, we find that the two theories are equivalent to each other. We verify that the single mode approximation for the response functions and the static structure factor becomes reliable near the phase transition. We show that the dispersion relation of the nematic mode near the phase transition can be obtained from the Dirac brackets between the components of the…
We use the X-boson method to study the heavy fermion superconductivity employing an extension of the periodic Anderson model in the $ U = \infty $ limit with a nearest neighbor attractive interaction between the localized $ f $-electrons and we show that higher values of the hybridization parameter implies in lower values associated to the maximum of the superconducting critical temperature $ T_{c} $, indicating that the real charge transfer between bands tends to destabilizes the Cooper pairing. Moreover, we show that superconductivity are constrained to the vicinity of a range of occupations…
In the present paper, the Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) with the nearest-neighbor (NN) repulsions is studied from the view point of possible bosonic analogs of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state in the vicinity of the Mott insulator (MI). First, by means of the Gutzwiller approximation, we obtain the phase diagram of the BHM in a magnetic field. Then, we introduce an effective Hamiltonian describing excess particles on a MI and calculate the vortex density, momentum distribution and the energy gap. These calculations indicate that the vortex solid forms for small NN repulsions, but a homogeneo…
