In this paper, we present astrophysical parameters of the open cluster King 13 based on the VI CCD and 2MASS JHKs photometric data. This is a poorly studied cluster, for which new results have been found in the present work. To identify probable members, we use proper motion data from Gaia DR2 catalogue. The mean proper motion of the cluster is determined as -2.8 \pm 0.2 and -0.88 \pm 0.14 mas yr{-1} and cluster extent is derived as 3'.2. Using color-magnitude diagrams, we estimate the age and distance of the cluster as 510 \pm 60 Myr and 3.84 \pm 0.15 kpc respectively. Interstellar reddening E(B-V) in the direction of the cluster is determined as 0.80 \pm 0.2 mag using color-color diagram. Mass function slope of the cluster is found to be comparable with the Salpeter value. The total mass of this cluster is derived as 270 M_{\odot}. The present analysis shows that King 13 is a dynamically relaxed cluster.
This paper presents an investigation on the four open clusters Czernik 14, Haffner 14, Haffner 17 and King 10 located near the Perseus arm of Milky Way Galaxy using Gaia DR2, 2MASS, WISE, APASS and Pan-STARRS1 data sets. We find normal interstellar extinction in twelve photometric bands for these clusters. Likely cluster members are identified as 225, 353, 350 and 395 for Czernik 14, Haffner 14, Haffner 17 and King 10, respectively by using Gaia DR2 proper motion data. Radii are determined as 3.5, 3.7, 6.2 and 5.7 arcmin for Czernik 14, Haffner 14, Haffner 17 and King 10 respectively. Mean pro…
We present reddening, photometric metallicity, age and distance estimates for the Frolov 1 and NGC 7510 open clusters based on CCD UBV photometric and Gaia data. Photometric observations were collected using the 1-m telescope of the TÜBİTAK National Observatory. Gaia DR2 proper motion data in the direction of two groupings were used to identify cluster membership. We determined mean proper motion values ($ μ_α\cosδ, μ_δ$) = ($-3.02\pm 0.10$, $-1.75 \pm 0.08$) and ($-3.66 \pm 0.07$, $-2.17 \pm 0.06$) mas yr$^{-1}$ for Frolov 1 and NGC 7510, respectively. We used two-colour diagrams to obtain $E…
The BVRcIc CCD photometry in the fields of six open clusters toward the Perseus spiral arm is presented. These data along with JHKs magnitudes taken from 2MASS catalog, have been used to determine cluster's ages, distances and color excesses. In addition, the gaps in mass function of Be 97, King 12 and NGC 7788 clusters have been revealed in mass intervals of 1.3-1.5, 1.4-1.6 and 1.5-1.7 solar masses, respectively.
A rarely studied open cluster, King 1 is observed using the 1.3m telescope equipped with 2k x 4k CCD at the Vainu Bappu Observatory, India. We analyse the photometric data obtained from the CCD observations in both B and V bands. Out of 132 detected stars in the open cluster King 1 field, we have identified 4 stellar variables and 2 among them are reported as newly detected binary systems, in this paper. The parallax values from GAIA DR2 suggest that the open cluster King 1 is at the background of these two detected binary systems, falling along the same line of sight, giving rise to different…
The satellite missions Hipparcos and Gaia by the European Space Agency will together bring a decrease of astrometric errors by a factor 10000, four orders of magnitude, more than was achieved during the preceding 500 years. This modern development of astrometry was at first obtained by photoelectric astrometry. An experiment with this technique in 1925 led to the Hipparcos satellite mission in the years 1989-93 as described in the following reports Nos. 1 and 10. The report No. 11 is about the subsequent period of space astrometry with CCDs in a scanning satellite. This period began in 1992 wi…
During the Hipparcos mission in September 1992, I presented a concept for using direct imaging on CCDs in scanning mode in a new and very powerful astrometric satellite, Roemer. The Roemer concept with larger aperture telescopes for higher accuracy was developed by ESA and a mission was approved in 2000, expected to be a million times better than Hipparcos. The present name Gaia for the mission reminds of an interferometric option also studied in the period 1993-97, and the evolution of optics and detection in this period is the main subject of the present report. The transition from an interf…
Gaia is a revolutionary space mission developed by ESA and is delivering 5 parameter astrometry, photometry and radial velocities over the whole sky with astrometric accuracies down to a few tens of micro-arcseconds. A weakness of Gaia is that it only operates at optical wavelengths. However, much of the Galactic centre and the spiral arm regions, important for certain studies, are obscured by interstellar extinction and this makes it difficult for Gaia to deeply probe. This problem can be overcome by switching to the Near Infra-Red (NIR) but this is not possible with silicon CCDs. Additionall…
We present CCD $UBVI$ photometric study of poorly studied intermediate age open cluster SAI 35 (Juchert 20) for the first time. To accomplish this study, we also used LAMOST DR5, 2MASS, and Gaia EDR3 databases. We identified 214 most probable cluster members with membership probability higher than 50%. The mean proper motion of the cluster is found as μ_αcosδ=1.10 \pm 0.01 and μ_δ=-1.66 \pm 0.01 mas/yr. We find the normal interstellar extinction law using the various two-color diagrams. The age, distance, reddening, and radial velocity of the cluster are estimated to be 360 \pm 40 Myr, 2.9 \pm…
We present a detailed photometric and kinematical analysis of poorly studied open cluster IC 1434 using CCD VRI, APASS, and Gaia DR2 database for the first time. BY determining the membership probability of stars, we identified the 238 most probable members with a probability higher than 60% by using proper motion and parallax data as taken from the Gaia DR2 catalog. The mean proper motion of the cluster is obtained as emu_x= - 3.89 +/- 0.19 and emu_y= - 3.34 +/- 0.19 mas/yr in both the directions of right ascension and declination. The radial distribution of member stars provides cluster exte…
We present a CCD photometric survey for the search of variable stars in four open clusters namely Berkeley 69, King 5, King 7, and Berkeley 20. The time series observations were carried out for 1 and/or 2 nights for each of the clusters in the year 1998, which have led to identify nineteen variable stars in these clusters. Out of these 19 variable stars, five stars show delta Scuti like variability and two stars show W UMa type variability. In other stars, we could not find the periods and hence the type of variability due to the lack of sufficient data. The periods of delta Scuti type stars a…
In this study, we carried out CCD UBV photometry of eight open clusters, ASCC 115, Collinder 421, NGC 6793, NGC 7031, NGC 7039, NGC 7086, Roslund 1, Stock 21, and determined their reddening, metallicity, distance, age, and mass functions. We used new Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) astrometric data to separate cluster member stars from the field stars and obtain precise structural and astrophysical parameters. To identify cluster member stars we utilized an unsupervised membership assignment code (UPMASK), which is based on the photometric and astrometric data. The density distributions for the open…
The Gaia satellite is a high-precision astrometry, photometry and spectroscopic ESA cornerstone mission, currently scheduled for launch in 2012. Its primary science drivers are the composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Gaia will achieve its unprecedented positional accuracy requirements with detailed calibration and correction for radiation damage. At L2, protons cause displacement damage in the silicon of CCDs. The resulting traps capture and emit electrons from passing charge packets in the CCD pixel, distorting the image PSF and biasing its centroid. Microscopic models of Gaia…
The Gaia satellite is a high-precision astrometry, photometry and spectroscopic ESA cornerstone mission, currently scheduled for launch in 2012. Its primary science drivers are the composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Gaia will achieve its unprecedented accuracy requirements with detailed calibration and correction for CCD radiation damage and CCD geometric distortion. In this paper, the third of the series, we present our 3D Silvaco ATLAS model of the Gaia e2v CCD91-72 pixel. We publish e2v's design model predictions for the capacities of one of Gaia's pixel features, the suppl…
Gaia is the next astrometry mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), following up on the success of the Hipparcos mission. With a focal plane containing 106 CCD detectors, Gaia will survey the entire sky and repeatedly observe the brightest 1,000 million objects, down to 20th magnitude, during its 5-year lifetime. Gaia's science data comprises absolute astrometry, broad-band photometry, and low-resolution spectro-photometry. Spectroscopic data with a resolving power of 11,500 will be obtained for the brightest 150 million sources, down to 17th magnitude. The thermo-mechanical stability of t…
We present a study of six open clusters (Berkeley 67, King 2, NGC 2420, NGC 2477, NGC 2682 and NGC 6940) using the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard \textit{ASTROSAT} and \textit{Gaia} EDR3. We used combinations of astrometric, photometric and systematic parameters to train and supervise a machine learning algorithm along with a Gaussian mixture model for the determination of cluster membership. This technique is robust, reproducible and versatile in various cluster environments. In this study, the \textit{Gaia} EDR3 membership catalogues are provided along with classification of th…

We performed detailed photometric and astrometric analyses of the open star clusters Berkeley 68 and Stock 20. This was based on ground-based CCD UBV photometric data complemented by space-based Gaia Data Release 3 photometry and astrometry. 198 stars were identified as likely cluster members for Berkeley 68 and 51 for Stock 20. Two-color diagrams were used to derive the reddening and photometric metallicity for each cluster. The reddening for Berkeley 68 is $E(B-V)=0.520 \pm 0.032$ and $0.400 \pm 0.048$ mag for Stock 20. Photometric metallicity [Fe/H] is $-0.13 \pm 0.08$ dex for Berkeley 68, …
Archival Vilnius CCD photometric observations are presented for the heavily reddened star cluster Melotte 105, resulting in colour-magnitude diagrams and spectral class estimates. There is considerable lack of agreement between studies for reddening, age, and distance for this cluster explaining why the archival data are being made available by this paper. The derived reddening E(B-V =0.34 +/- 0.04 mag and the distance V-M =12.9 +/- 0.3 mag directly from the Vilnius photometry. The Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Vilnius photometric data of the cluster were used to estimate the structural parame…
In this paper we develop a differential astrometric framework that is appropriate for a scanning space satellite such as Gaia. We apply it to the first of the GAREQ fields, which is the fruit of dedicated efforts within the Gaia project focused on measuring the relativistic deflection of light close to Jupiter's limb. This provides a preliminary assessment of: a) the observability of the relativistic deflection of light close to Jupiter, and, b) Gaia's astrometric capabilities under extremely difficult conditions such as those around a bright extended object. Inputs to our differential astrome…
This paper presents CCD multicolour photometry for the old open cluster NGC 188. The observations were carried out as a part of the Beijing--Arizona--Taiwan--Connecticut Multicolour Sky Survey from 1995 February to 2008 March, using 15 intermediate-band filters covering 3000--10000 Å. By fitting the Padova theoretical isochrones to our data, the fundamental parameters of this cluster are derived: an age of $t=7.5\pm 0.5$ Gyr, a distant modulus of $(m-M)_0=11.17\pm0.08$, and a reddening of $E(B-V)=0.036\pm0.010$. The radial surface density profile of NGC 188 is obtained by star count. By fittin…
Metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) are our local link to the earliest epochs of star formation and galaxy building. Studies of extragalactic GC systems using deep, high-quality imaging have revealed a small but significant slope to the color-magnitude relation for metal-poor GCs in a number of galaxies. We present a study of the M87 GC system using deep, archival HST/ACS imaging with the F606W and F814W filters, in which we find a significant color-magnitude relation for the metal-poor GCs. The slope of this relation in the I vs. V-I color-magnitude diagram ($γ_I=-0.024\pm0.006$) is perfectly …
Aims: On the basis of the PPMXL star catalogue we performed a survey of star clusters in the second quadrant of the Milky Way. Methods: From the PPMXL catalogue of positions and proper motions we took the subset of stars with near-infrared photometry from 2MASS and added the remaining 2MASS stars without proper motions (called 2MAst, i.e. 2MASS with astrometry). We developed a data-processing pipeline including interactive human control of a standardised set of multi-dimensional diagrams to determine kinematic and photometric membership probabilities for stars in a cluster region. The pipeline…
We present deep wide-field optical CCD photometry and mid-infrared Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS 24micron data for about 100,000 stars in the young open cluster IC 1805. The members of IC 1805 were selected from their location in the various color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, and the presence of Halpha emission, mid-infrared excess emission, and X-ray emission. The reddening law toward IC 1805 is nearly normal (R_V = 3.05+/-0.06). However, the distance modulus of the cluster is estimated to be 11.9+/-0.2 mag (d = 2.4+/-0.2 kpc) from the reddening-free color-magnitude diagrams, which is larger t…

Palomar 5 (Pal 5) is a faint halo globular cluster associated with narrow tidal tails. It is a useful system to understand the process of tidal dissolution, as well as to constrain the potential of the Milky Way. A well-determined orbit for Pal 5 would enable detailed study of these open questions. We present here the first CCD-based proper motion measurement of Pal 5 obtained using SDSS as a first epoch and new LBT/LBC images as a second, giving a baseline of 15 years. We perform relative astrometry, using SDSS as a distortion-free reference, and images of the cluster and also of the Pal 5 st…
We wish to measure the cool star rotation period distribution for the Pleiades-age rich open cluster NGC 2516 and use it to determine whether cluster-to-cluster variations exist in otherwise identical open clusters. We obtained 42 d-long time-series CCD photometry of NGC 2516 using the Yale 1 m telescope at CTIO and performed a number of related analyses, including PSF-based time-series photometry. Our data are complemented with additional information from several photometric datasets, literature radial velocities, and Gaia DR2 astrometry. All available data are used to construct an integrated…
