In this paper we establish an invariant set bifurcation theory for the nonautonomous dynamical system $(\va_\lam,\0)_{X,\cH}$ generated by the evolution equation \be\label{e0}u_t+Au=\lam u+p(t,u),\hs p\in \cH=\cH[f(\.,u)]\ee on a Hilbert space $X$, where $A$ is a sectorial operator, $\lam$ is the bifurcation parameter, $f(\.,u):\R\ra X$ is translation compact, $f(t,0)\equiv0$ and $\cH[f]$ is the hull of $f(\.,u)$. Denote by $\va_\lam:=\va_\lam(t,p)u$ the cocycle semiflow generated by the equation. Under some other assumptions on $f$, we show that as the parameter $\lam$ crosses an eigenvalue $\lam_0\in\R$ of $A$, the system bifurcates from
$0$ to a nonautonomous invariant set $B_\lam(\.)$ on one-sided neighborhood of $\lam_0$. Moreover, $$\lim_{\lam\ra\lam_0}H_{X^\a}\(B_\lam(p),0\)=0,\hs p\in P,$$ where $H_{X^\a}(\.,\.)$ denotes the Hausdorff semidistance in $X^\a$ (here $X^α$ ($\a\geq0$) defined below is the fractional power spaces associated with $A$).
Our result is based on the pullback attractor bifurcation on the local central invariant manifolds $\cM^\lam_{loc}(\.)$.
We analyze the characteristics of the global attractor of a type of dissipative nonautonomous dynamical systems in terms of the Sacker and Sell spectrum of its linear part. The model gives rise to a pattern of nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation which can be understood as a generalization of the classical autonomous one. We pay special attention to the dynamics at the bifurcation point, showing the possibility of occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos in the corresponding attractor and hence of a high degree of unpredictability.
An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induc…
Heteroclinic orbits for one-parameter families of nonautonomous vectorfields appear in a very natural way in many physical applications. Inspired by some recent bifurcation results for homoclinic trajectories of nonautonomous vectorfield, we define a new $\mathbf Z_2$-index and we construct a index theory for heteroclinic orbits of nonautonomous vectorfield. We prove an index theorem, by showing that, under some standard transversality assumptions, the $\mathbf Z_2$-index is equal to the parity, a homotopy invariant for paths of Fredholm operators of index 0. As a direct consequence of the ind…
We discuss tipping phenomena (critical transitions) in nonautonomous systems using an example of a bistable ecosystem model with environmental changes represented by time-varying parameters [Scheffer et al., Ecosystems, 11 (2008), pp. 275--279]. We give simple testable criteria for the occurrence of nonautonomous tipping from the herbivore-dominating equilibrium to the plant-only equilibrium using global properties of the autonomous frozen system with fixed-in-time parameters. To begin with, we use classical autonomous bifurcation analysis to identify a codimension-three degenerate Bogdanov-Ta…
We discuss the nonlinear phenomena of irreversible tipping for non-autonomous systems where time-varying inputs correspond to a smooth "parameter shift" from one asymptotic value to another. We express tipping in terms of pullback attraction and present some results on how nontrivial dynamics for non-autonomous systems can be deduced from analysis of the bifurcation diagram for an associated autonomous system where parameters are fixed. In particular, we show that there is a unique local pullback point attractor associated with each linearly stable equilibrium for the past limit. If there is a…
A non-autonomous version of the standard map with a periodic variation of the parameter is introduced and studied. Symmetry properties in the variables and parameters of the map are found and used to find relations between rotation numbers of invariant sets of the autonomous realization of the period-two case of the map. The role of the nonautonomous dynamics on period-one orbits, stability and bifurcation is studied. The critical boundaries for the global transport and the destruction of invariant circles with fixed rotation number are studied in detail using direct computation and a continua…
This article describes a reduction of a nonautonomous Brusselator reaction-diffusion system of partial differential equations on a spherical cap with time dependent curvature using the method of centre manifold reduction. Parameter values are chosen such that the change in curvature would cross critical values which would change the stability of the patternless solution in the constant domain case. The evolving domain functions and quasi-patternless solutions are derived as well as a method to obtain this nonautonomous normal form. The coefficients of such a normal form are computed and the re…
In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions for the permanence of a family of nonautonomous systems of delay differential equations. This family includes structured models from mathematical biology, with either discrete or distributed delays in both the linear and nonlinear terms, and where typically the nonlinear terms are nonmonotone. Applications to generalized Nicholson or Mackey-Glass systems are given.
When extending bifurcation theory of dynamical systems to nonautonomous problems, it is a central observation that hyperbolic equilibria persist as bounded entire solutions under small temporally varying perturbations. In this paper, we abandon the smallness assumption and aim to investigate the global structure of the entity of all such bounded entire solutions in the situation of nonautonomous difference equations. Our tools are global implicit function theorems based on an ambient degree theory for Fredholm operators due to Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier. For this we yet have to restr…
We develop the Bohl spectrum for nonautonomous linear differential equation on a half line, which is a spectral concept that lies between the Lyapunov and the Sacker--Sell spectrum. We prove that the Bohl spectrum is given by the union of finitely many intervals, and we show by means of an explicit example that the Bohl spectrum does not coincide with the Sacker--Sell spectrum in general. We demonstrate for this example that any higher-order nonlinear perturbation is exponentially stable, although this not evident from the Sacker--Sell spectrum. We also analyze in detail situations in which th…
Given a nonautonomous and nonlinear differential equation \begin{equation}\label{DE} x'=A(t)x+f(t,x) \quad t\geq 0, \end{equation} on an arbitrary Banach space $X$, we formulate very general conditions for the associated linear equation $x'=A(t)x$ and for the nonlinear term $f:[0,+\infty)\times X\to X$ under which the above system satisfies an appropriate version of the shadowing property. More precisely, we require that $x'=A(t)x$ admits a very general type of dichotomy, which includes the classical hyperbolic behaviour as a very particular case. In addition, we require that $f$ is Lipschitz …
In this work we study permanence of hyperbolicity for autonomous differential equations under nonautonomous random/stochastic perturbations. For the linear case, we study robustness and existence of exponential dichotomies for nonautonomous random dynamical systems. Next, we establish a result on the persistence of hyperbolic equilibria for nonlinear differential equations. We show that for each nonautonomous random perturbation of an autonomous semilinear problem with a hyperbolic equilibrium there exists a bounded \textit{random hyperbolic solution} for the associated nonlinear nonautonomous…
We develop a general compactification framework to facilitate analysis of nonlinear nonautonomous ODEs where nonautonomous terms decay asymptotically. The strategy is to compactify the problem: the phase space is augmented with a bounded but open dimension and then extended at one or both ends by gluing in flow-invariant subspaces that carry autonomous dynamics of the limit systems from infinity. We derive the weakest decay conditions possible for the compactified system to be continuously differentiable on the extended phase space. This enables us to use equilibria and other compact invariant…
We obtain a result on the behavior of the solutions of a general nonautonomous Hopfield neural network model with delay, assuming some general bound for the product of consecutive terms in the sequence of neuron charging times and some conditions to control the nonlinear part of the equations. We then apply this result to improve some existent results on the stability of Hopfield models. Our results are based on a new abstract result on the behavior of nonautonomous delayed equations.
We consider discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations of n sites with periodic boundary conditions. These equations have n branches of standing waves that bifurcate from zero. Traveling waves appear as a symmetry-breaking from the standing waves for different amplitudes. The bifurcation is proved using the global Rabinowitz alternative in subspaces of symmetric functions. As examples, we present applications to the Schrödinger and Saturable lattices.
The harmonic balance (HB) method is widely used in the literature for analyzing the periodic solutions of nonlinear mechanical systems. The objective of this paper is to exploit the method for bifurcation analysis, i.e., for the detection and tracking of bifurcations of nonlinear systems. To this end, an algorithm that combines the computation of the Floquet exponents with bordering techniques is developed. A new procedure for the tracking of Neimark-Sacker bifurcations that exploits the properties of eigenvalue derivatives is also proposed. The HB method is demonstrated using numerical experi…
We establish new global bifurcation theorems for dynamical systems in terms of local semiflows on complete metric spaces. These theorems are applied to the nonlinear evolution equation $u_t+A u=f_λ(u)$ in a Banach space $X$, where $A$ is a sectorial operator with compact resolvent. Assume that $0$ is always a trivial stationary solution of the equation. We show that the global dynamic bifurcation branch $Γ$ of a bifurcation point $(0,λ_0)$ either meets another bifurcation point $(0,λ_1)$, or is unbounded, completely extending the well-known Rabinowitz Global Bifurcation Theorem on operator equ…
We introduce the notion of equilibrium index for statically isolated invariant sets of the system $u_t+A u=f_λ(u)$ on Banach space $X$ (where $A$ is a sectorial operator with compact resolvent) and present a reduction theorem and an index formula for bifurcating invariant sets near equilibrium points. Then we prove a new global static bifurcation theorem where the crossing number $\mathfrak{m}$ may be even. In particular, in case $\mathfrak{m}=2$, we show that the system undergoes either an attractor/repeller bifurcation, or a global static bifurcation. An illustrating example is also given by…
In this paper, we study stability properties of nonuniform hyperbolicity for evolution processes associated with differential equations in Banach spaces. We prove a robustness result of nonuniform hyperbolicity for linear evolution processes, that is, we show that the property of admitting a nonuniform exponential dichotomy is stable under perturbation. Moreover, we provide conditions to obtain uniqueness and continuous dependence of projections associated with nonuniform exponential dichotomies. We also present an example of evolution process in a Banach space that admits nonuniform exponenti…
\noindent We formulate an age-structured three-staged nonlinear partial differential equation model that features {\it nonlinear} recidivism to the infected ({\it infectious}) class from the {\it temporarily} recovered class. Equilibria are computed, as well as local and global stability of the {\it infection-free} equilibrium. As a result, a backward-bifurcation exists under necessary and sufficient conditions. A generalized numerical framework is established and numerical experiments are explored for two positive solutions to exist in the {\it infectious} class.

We numerically study solitary waves in the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We detect pitchfork bifurcations of the fundamental solitary wave and compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the corresponding eigenvalue problems to determine the spectral stability of solitary waves born at the pitchfork bifurcations. Our numerical results demonstrate the theoretical ones which the authors obtained recently. We also compute generalized eigenfunctions associated with the zero eigenvalue for the bifurcated solitary wave exhibiting a saddle-node bifurcation, and show that it does not change i…
We study bifurcations and spectral stability of solitary waves in coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (CNLS) on the line. We assume that the coupled equations possess a solution of which one component is identically zero, and call it a $\textit{fundamental solitary wave}$. By using a result of one of the authors and his collaborator, the bifurcations of the fundamental solitary wave are detected. We utilize the Hamiltonian-Krein index theory and Evans function technique to determine the spectral or orbital stability of the bifurcated solitary waves as well as as that of the fundamental one…
