Dual-comb microscopy (DCM), based on a combination of dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) with two-dimensional spectral encoding (2D-SE), is a promising method for scan-less confocal laser microscopy giving an amplitude and phase image contrast with the confocality. However, signal loss in a 2D-SE optical system hampers increase in image acquisition rate due to decreased signa-to-noise ratio. In this article, we demonstrated optical image amplification in DCM with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). Combined use of image-encoded DCS interferogram and EDFA benefits from not only the batch amplification of amplitude and phase images but also significant rejection of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) background. Effectiveness of the optical-image-amplified DCM is highlighted in the single-shot quantitative nanometer-order surface topography and the real-time movie of polystyrene beads dynamics under water convection. The proposed method will be a powerful tool for real-time observation of surface topography and fast dynamic phenomena.
Detector nonlinearity is an important factor limiting the maximal power and hence the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in dual-comb interferometry. To increase the SNR without overwhelming averaging time, specific experimental conditions must be met to ensure that photodetector nonlinearity is properly handled for high input power. Detectors exhibiting nonlinear behavior can produce linear dual-comb interferograms if the area of the detector's impulse response does not saturate and if the overlap between successive time-varying impulse responses is properly managed. Here, a high bandwidth non-ampli…
Mid-infrared femtosecond optical frequency combs were produced by difference frequency generation of the spectral components of a near-infrared comb in a 3-mm-long MgO:PPLN crystal. We observe strong pump depletion and 9.3 dB parametric gain in the 1.5 μm signal, which yields powers above 500 mW (3 μW/mode) in the idler with spectra covering 2.8 μm to 3.5 μm. Potential for broadband, high-resolution molecular spectroscopy is demonstrated by absorption spectra and interferograms obtained by heterodyning two combs.
A theoretical analysis is carried out for the recently developed three-pulse photon echo spectroscopy employing dual frequency combs (DFC) as the light sources. In this method, the molecular sample interacts with three pulse trains derived from the DFC and the generated third-order signal is displayed as a two-dimensional (2D) spectrum that depends on the waiting time introduced by employing asynchronous optical sampling method. Through the analysis of the heterodyne-detected signal interferogram using a local oscillator derived from one of the optical frequency combs, we show that the 2D spec…
We use two femtosecond Erbium-doped fiber lasers with slightly different repetition rates to perform a modern type of Fourier transform spectroscopy without moving parts. The measurements are done in real time, and it takes less than 50 microseconds. We work with somewhat different spectral outputs from two Erbium-doped fiber lasers and employ spectral filtering based on a 2f-2f grating setup to select the common spectral region of interest, thereby increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. The interferogram is taken with a 20 cm long gas cell, containing a mixture of acetylene and air at atmosphe…
The impact of photodetector nonlinearity on dual-comb spectrometers is described and compared to that of Michelson-based Fourier transform spectrometers (FTS). The optical sampling occurring in the dual-comb approach, being the key difference with FTS, causes optical aliasing of the nonlinear spectral artifacts. Measured linear and nonlinear interferograms are presented to validate the model. Absorption lines of H$^{13}$CN are provided to understand the impact of nonlinearity on spectroscopic measurements.
We experimentally demonstrate a versatile technique for performing dual-comb interferometry using a single frequency comb. By rapid switching of the repetition rate, the output pulse train can be delayed and heterodyned with itself to produce interferograms. The full speed and resolution of standard dual-comb interferometry is preserved while simultaneously offering a significant experimental simplification and cost savings. We show that this approach is particularly suited for absolute distance metrology due to an extension of the non-ambiguity range as a result of the continuous repetition-r…
The phase information provided by the beat note between frequency combs and two continuous-wave lasers is used to extrapolate the phase evolution of comb modes found in a spectral region obtained via nonlinear broadening. This thereafter enables using interferogram self-correction to fully retrieve the coherence of a dual-comb beat note between two independent fiber lasers. This approach allows to forego the $f - 2f$ self-referencing of both combs, which is a significant simplification. Broadband near-infrared methane spectroscopy has been conducted as a demonstration of the simplified system'…
We present a dual-comb spectrometer based on two passively mode-locked waveguide lasers integrated in a single Er-doped ZBLAN chip. This original design yields two free-running frequency combs having a high level of mutual stability. We developed in parallel a self-correction algorithm that compensates residual relative fluctuations and yields mode-resolved spectra without the help of any reference laser or control system. Fluctuations are extracted directly from the interferograms using the concept of ambiguity function, which leads to a significant simplification of the instrument that will …
We present a 2-\mum frequency comb based on a reliable mode-locked Er:fiber laser with 100 MHz repetition rate. After shifting the spectrum of the amplified Er:fiber comb to longer wavelengths, a single-clad Tm/Ho:fiber is used as a self-pumped pre-amplifier to generate a coherent and broadband spectrum centered at 1.93 \mum. Subsequently, a cladding-pumped Tm:fiber amplifier boosts the system to a maximum output power of 4.8 W at 1.96 \mum. After compression in a compact grating compressor, our amplified Er:fiber/Tm:fiber hybrid system delivers as much as 2.9 W with a pulse duration of 141 fs…
Dual-comb spectroscopy is a promising method for precise optical spectrum analysis with fast data acquisition speed. However, its implementation and applications are often hindered by the complexity of optical comb systems. Here, as a compact and robust system, femtosecond imbalanced time-stretch spectroscopy (FITSS) with simple optical layout is proposed and demonstrated. The time-stretch interferometry from one femtosecond laser builds a mapping from the optical frequency domain to the radio frequency regime. In experiment, the absorption line of a hydrogen cyanide cell is encoded in the pro…
Many optical systems use acousto-optics for fast steering of light. However, acousto-optic (AO) light diffraction permits manipulation and shaping of light fields in a much broader sense including holography. While acousto-optic devices operate at incontestable speed, they are one dimensional (1D) diffraction devices depending on analog serial data transfer and as such have a mode of use distinguished from common 2D spatial light modulators. Combination with an amplified laser source allows to clock the serial buildup of AO diffraction patterns for avoidance of phase aberration in the output b…
A novel technique for divided-pulse amplification is presented in a proof-of-principle experiment. A pulse burst, cut out of the pulse train of a mode-locked oscillator, is amplified and temporally combined into a single pulse. High combination efficiency and excellent pulse contrast are demonstrated. The system is mostly fiber-coupled, enabling a high interferometric stability. This approach provides access to the amplitude and phase of the individual pulses in the burst to be amplified, potentially allowing the compensation of gain saturation and nonlinear phase mismatches within the burst. …
Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is useful for gas spectroscopy due to high potential of optical frequency comb (OFC). However, fast Fourier transform (FFT) calculation of a huge amount of temporal data spends significantly longer time than the acquisition time of an interferogram. In this article, we demonstrate frequency-domain DCS by a combination of DCS with lock-in detection, namely LID-DCS. LID-DCS directly extracts an arbitrary OFC mode from a vast number of OFC modes without the need for FFT calculation. Usefulness of LID-DCS is demonstrated in rapid monitoring of transient signal change a…
The pulse-energy scaling technique electro-optically controlled divided-pulse amplification is implemented in a high-power ultrafast fiber laser system based on coherent beam combination. A fiber-integrated front end and a multi-pass cell based back end allow for a small footprint and a modular implementation. Bursts of 8 pulses are amplified parallel in up to 12 ytterbium-doped large-pitch fiber amplifiers. Subsequent spatio-temporal coherent combination of the 96 total amplified pulse replicas to a single pulse results in a pulse energy of 23 mJ at an average power of 674 W, compressible to …
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has proven to be a powerful technique for studying tissue morphology in ophthalmology, cardiology, and endomicroscopy. Its performance is limited by the fundamental trade-off between the imaging sensitivity and acquisition speed -- a predicament common in virtually all imaging systems. In this paper, we circumvent this limit by using distributed Raman post-amplification of the reflection from the sample. We combine the amplification with simultaneously performed dispersive Fourier transformation, a process that maps the optical spectrum into an easily measure…
Spectroscopic ellipsometry is a means to investigate optical and dielectric material responses. Conventional spectroscopic ellipsometry has trade-offs between spectral accuracy, resolution, and measurement time. Polarization modulation has afforded poor performance due to its sensitivity to mechanical vibrational noise, thermal instability, and polarization wavelength dependency. We equip a spectroscopic ellipsometer with dual-optical-comb spectroscopy, viz. dual-optical-comb spectroscopic ellipsometry (DCSE). The DCSE directly and simultaneously obtains amplitude and phase information with ul…
A tapered semiconductor amplifier is injection seeded by a femtosecond optical frequency comb at 780 nm from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Energy gains over 17 dB (12 dB) are obtained for 1 mW (20 mW) of average input power when the input pulses are stretched into the picosecond range. A spectral window of supercontinuum light generated in a photonic fiber has also been amplified. Interferometric measurements show sub-hertz linewidths for a heterodyne beat between the input and amplified comb components, yielding no detectable phase-noise degradation under amplification. These amplifiers ca…
An optical frequency comb generated with an electro-optic phase modulator and a chirped radiofrequency waveform is used to perform saturation and pump-probe spectroscopy on the $D_1$ and $D_2$ transitions of atomic potassium. With a comb tooth spacing of 200 kHz and an optical bandwidth of 2 GHz the hyperfine transitions can be simultaneously observed. Interferograms are recorded in as little as 5 $μ$s (a timescale corresponding to the inverse of the comb tooth spacing). Importantly, the sub-Doppler features can be measured as long as the laser carrier frequency lies within the Doppler profile…
A mid-Infrared frequency comb is produced via an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an amplified 100 MHz Yb:fiber mode-locked laser. We use this source to make measurements of the concentration of the atmospherically-relevant species of CH4 and H2O over a bandwidth of 100 nm centered at 3.25 um. Multiple absorption lines for each species are detected with millisecond acquisition time using a virtually-imaged phased array (VIPA) spectrometer. The measured wavelength-dependent absorption profile is compared to and fitted by a model, yielding quantitative values of the atmospheric conc…
We present full phase stabilization of an amplified Yb:fiber femtosecond frequency comb using an intra-cavity electro-optic modulator and an acousto-optic modulator. These transducers provide high servo bandwidths of 580 kHz and 250 kHz for frep and fceo, producing a robust and low phase noise fiber frequency comb. The comb was self-referenced with an f - 2f interferometer and phase locked to an ultra-stable optical reference used for the JILA Sr optical clock at 698 nm, exhibiting 0.21 rad and 0.47 rad of integrated phase errors (over 1 mHz - 1 MHz) respectively. Alternatively, the comb was l…
Amplified bursts of laser pulses are sought for various machining, deposition, spectroscopic and strong-field applications. Standard frequency- and time-domain techniques for pulse division become inadequate when intraburst repetition rates reach the terahertz (THz) range as a consequence of inaccessible spectral resolution, requirement for interferometric stability, and collapse of the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) concept due to the loss of usable bandwidth needed for safe temporal stretching. Avoiding the burst amplification challenge and resorting to a lossy post-division of an isolate…
Broadband precision spectroscopy is indispensable for providing high fidelity molecular parameters for spectroscopic databases. We have recently shown that mechanical Fourier transform spectrometers based on optical frequency combs can measure broadband high-resolution molecular spectra undistorted by the instrumental line shape (ILS) and with a highly precise frequency scale provided by the comb. The accurate measurement of the power of the comb modes interacting with the molecular sample was achieved by acquiring single-burst interferograms with nominal resolution precisely matched to the co…
As optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) is extended to a broader range of applications, it is critical to improve the detection sensitivity of optical 2DCS. We developed a fast phase-cycling scheme in a non-collinear optical 2DCS implementation by using liquid crystal phase retarders to modulate the phases of two excitation pulses. The background in the signal can be eliminated by combining either two or four interferograms measured with a proper phase configuration. The effectiveness of this method was validated in optical 2DCS measurements of an atomic vapor. This fast phase-…
We report a simple technique to suppress high frequency phase noise of a Yb-based fiber optical frequency comb using an active intensity noise servo. Out-of-loop measurements of the phase noise using an optical heterodyne beat with a continuous wave (cw) laser show suppression of phase noise by \geq7 dB out to Fourier frequencies of 100 kHz with a unity-gain crossing of -700 kHz. These results are enabled by the strong correlation between the intensity and phase noise of the laser. Detailed measurements of intensity and phase noise spectra, as well as transfer functions, reveal that the domina…
Ultra-broadband long-period fiber grating with 10-dB bandwidth of 155 nm and 3-dB bandwidth of 415 nm is demonstrated around 1060 nm, which has been combined with a tunable ytterbium-doped fiber laser to generate optical doughnut beams in the spectral range from 1030 nm to 1099 nm, and the vector nature of generated optical fields are observed. The long-period fiber grating has also been used to transform the amplified spontaneous emission of an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier into a broadband optical doughnut beam.
We have specifically investigated the free-space mode locking dynamics of erbium-doped fiber (EDF) mode-locked ultrafast lasers via nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) in the normal dispersion regime. To do so, we built a passively mode-locked fiber laser based on NPR with a repetition rate of 89 MHz producing an octave-spanning spectrum due to supercontinuum (SC) generation in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Most significantly, we have achieved highly stable self-starting NPR mode-locked femtosecond fiber laser based frequency comb which has been running mode locked for the past one year wit…
Beginning with a continuous wave laser at 1064 nm, we generate a 30 GHz electro-optic frequency comb which contains 100 lines spanning 3 THz. The initial comb is subsequently amplified, spectrally broadened in normal dispersion photonic crystal fiber, and then temporally compressed to provide 74 fs pulses with average power of up to 2.6 W. When launched into a second photonic crystal fiber with anomalous dispersion, a supercontinuum spanning 800-1350 nm is generated. Second harmonic generation allows for extension of the 30 GHz comb into the visible, yielding greater than 300 THz of total spec…
We report on the development of a high-power mid-infrared frequency comb with 100 MHz repetition rate and 100 fs pulse duration. Difference frequency generation is realized between two branches derived from an Er:fiber comb, amplified separately in Yb:fiber and Er:fiber amplifiers. Average powers of 6.7 W and 14.9 W are generated in the 2.9 $μ$m idler and 1.6 $μ$m signal, respectively. With high average power, excellent beam quality, and passive carrier-envelope phase stabilization, this light source is a promising platform for generating broadband frequency combs in the far infrared, visible,…
We present a 1.75-GHz self-referenceable frequency comb from a vertical external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) passively modelocked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The VECSEL delivers 231-fs pulses with an average power of 100 mW and is optimized for stable and reliable operation. The optical spectrum was centered around 1038 nm and nearly transform-limited with a full width half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of 5.5 nm. The pulses were first amplified to an average power of 5.5 W using a backward-pumped Yb-doped double-clad large mode area (LMA) fiber and then compr…
Optical frequency combs based on mode-locked lasers have revolutionised the field of metrology and precision spectroscopy by providing precisely calibrated optical frequencies and coherent pulse trains. Amplification of the pulsed output from these lasers is very desirable, as nonlinear processes can then be employed to cover a much wider range of transitions and wavelengths for ultra-high precision, direct frequency comb spectroscopy. Therefore full repetition rate laser amplifiers and enhancement resonators have been employed to produce up to microjoule-level pulse energies. Here we show tha…

We describe a coherent mid-infrared continuum source with 700 cm-1 usable bandwidth, readily tuned within 600 - 2500 cm-1 (4 - 17 \mum) and thus covering much of the infrared "fingerprint" molecular vibration region. It is based on nonlinear frequency conversion in GaSe using a compact commercial 100-fs-pulsed Er fiber laser system providing two amplified near-infrared beams, one of them broadened by a nonlinear optical fiber. The resulting collimated mid-infrared continuum beam of 1 mW quasi-cw power represents a coherent infrared frequency comb with zero carrier-envelope phase, containing ab…

On-chip optical resonators have proven to be a promising platform for generating Kerr frequency combs. Whispering gallery mode resonators are particularly attractive because of their small footprint as well as low threshold and power consumption. This performance can be attributed to two characteristics: the cavity quality factor (Q) and the cavity dispersion. The input optical field into the cavity is amplified by the cavity Q, enabling nonlinear processes to occur with low input powers. In addition, the total span of the optical comb is governed by the dispersion. In an optical cavity-based …
Cavity optomechanics has become a powerful tool to manipulate mechanical motion via optical fields. When driving an optomechanical cavity with blue-detuned laser the mechanical motion is amplified, ultimately resulting in phonon lasing. In this work, we show that a silicon optomechanical crystal cavity can be used as an optoelectronic oscillator when driven to the phonon lasing condition. To this end, we use an optomechanical cavity designed to have a breathing-like mechanical mode vibrating at $Ω_{m}/2π=$3.897 GHz in a full phononic bandgap. Our measurements show that the first harmonic displ…
