Open clusters are key targets for both Galaxy structure and evolution and stellar physics studies. Since \textit{Gaia} DR2 publication, the discovery of undetected clusters has proven that our samples were not complete. Our aim is to exploit the Big Data capabilities of machine learning to detect new open clusters in \textit{Gaia} DR2, and to complete the open cluster sample to enable further studies on the Galactic disc. We use a machine learning based methodology to systematically search in the Galactic disc, looking for overdensities in the astrometric space and identifying them as open clusters using photometric information. First, we use an unsupervised clustering algorithm, DBSCAN, to blindly search for these overdensities in \textit{Gaia} DR2 $(l,b,\varpi,μ_{α^*},μ_δ)$. After that, we use a deep learning artificial neural network trained on colour-magnitude diagrams to identify isochrone patterns in these overdensities, and to confirm them as open clusters. We find $582$ new open clusters distributed along the Galactic disc, in the region $|b| < 20$. We can detect substructure in complex regions, and identify the tidal tails of a disrupting cluster UBC~$274$ of $\sim 3$ Gyr located at $\sim 2$ kpc. Adapting the methodology into a Big Data environment allows us to target the search driven by physical properties of the open clusters, instead of being driven by its computational requirements. This blind search for open clusters in the Galactic disc increases in a $45\%$ the number of known open clusters.
In this study, we characterized 16 objects previously classified as faint or low contrast Galactic open clusters (OCs). We employed parameters associated to the OCs dynamical evolution: core ($r_c$), tidal ($r_t$) and half-mass ($r_{hm}$) radii, age and crossing time ($t_{cr}$). Relations among these parameters were exploited to draw some evolutionary connections. We also included 11 OCs with previous characterizations to provide wider coverage of the parameters space. The investigated sample spans a considerable range in age (log (t/yr) ~7.0 - 9.7) and Galactocentric distance ($R_G$ ~ 6 - 11 …
This work studies the candidate double and multiple open clusters (OCs) in the galactic sector from l = 240o to l = 270o, which contains the Vela-Puppis star formation region. To do that, we have searched the most recent and complete catalogues of OCs by hand to get an extensive list of 22 groups of OCs involving 80 candidate members. Gaia EDR3 has been used to review some of the candidate OCs and look for new OCs near the candidate groups. Gaia data also permitted filtering out most of the field sources that are not member stars of the OCs. The plotting of combined colour-magnitude diagrams o…
We analyze the 3D morphology and kinematics of 13 open clusters (OCs) located within 500 pc of the Sun, using Gaia EDR3 and kinematic data from literature. Members of OCs are identified using the unsupervised machine learning method StarGO, using 5D parameters (X, Y, Z, $μ_α\cosδ, μ_δ$). The OC sample covers an age range of 25Myr--2.65Gyr. We correct the asymmetric distance distribution due to the parallax error using Bayesian inversion. The uncertainty in the corrected distance for a cluster at 500~pc is 3.0--6.3~pc, depending on the intrinsic spatial distribution of its members. We determine…
Blue straggler stars are exotic objects present in all stellar environments whose nature and formation channels are still partially unclear. They seem to be particularly abundant in open clusters (OCs), thus offering a unique chance to tackle these problems statistically. We aim to build up a new and homogeneous catalogue of blue straggler stars (BSS) in Galactic OCs using Gaia to provide a more solid assessment of the membership of these stars. We also aim to explore possible relationships of the straggler abundance with the parent cluster's structural and dynamical parameters. As a by-product…
In the Gaia era, the membership analysis and parameter determination of open clusters (OCs) are more accurate. We performed a census of OC's classical Cepheids based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and obtained a sample of 33 OC Cepheids fulfilling the constraints of the spatial position, proper motion, parallax and evolution state. 13 of 33 OC Cepheids are newly discovered. Among them, CM Sct is the first first-crossing Cepheids with direct evidence of evolution. DP Vel is likely a fourth- or fifth-crossing Cepheids. Based on independent distances from OCs, W_1-band period-luminosity rela…
Fundamental parameters and physical processes leading to the formation of white dwarfs (WDs) may be constrained and refined by discovering WDs in open clusters (OCs). Cluster membership can be utilized to establish the precise distances, luminosities, ages, and progenitor masses of such WDs. We compile a list of probable WDs that are OC members in order to facilitate WD studies that are impractical or difficult to conduct for Galactic field WDs. We use recent catalogs of WDs and OCs that are based on the second data release of the \textit{Gaia} satellite mission (GDR2) to identify WDs that are…
A primordial group of open clusters containing NGC 6871 is confirmed and described through Gaia DR3 data and the previous literature. It is a star-forming complex containing at least six young OCs, including Teutsch 8, FSR 198 and Biurakan 2. Two nearby OCs (Casado 82 and Casado-Hendy 1) are newly identified and studied in detail and found to be also members of the cited group. The parameters of the components are sufficiently similar to postulate the case of at least six clusters born from a single GMC. None of the cluster pairs of the group seems to be an authentic binary cluster, with the p…
The separation of oxygen- and carbon-rich AGB sources is crucial for their accurate use as local and cosmological distance and age/metallicity indicators. We investigate the use of unsupervised learning algorithms for classifying the chemistry of long-period variables from Gaia DR3's BP/RP spectra. Even in the presence of significant interstellar dust, the spectra separate into two groups attributable to O-rich and C-rich sources. Given these classifications, we utilise a supervised approach to separate O-rich and C-rich sources without BP/RP spectra but instead given broadband optical and inf…
We present a study of the detectability of transient events associated with galaxies for the Gaia European Space Agency astrometric mission. We simulated the on-board detections, and on-ground processing for a mock galaxy catalogue to establish the properties required for the discovery of transient events by Gaia, specifically tidal disruption events (TDEs) and supernovae (SNe). Transients may either be discovered by the on-board detection of a new source or by the brightening of a previously known source. We show that Gaia transients can be identified as new detections on-board for offsets fr…

The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a public, high-resolution spectroscopic survey with FLAMES@VLT. GES targeted in particular a large sample of open clusters (OCs) of all ages. The different kinds of OCs are useful to reach the main science goals, which are the study of the OC structure and dynamics, the use of OCs to constrain and improve stellar evolution models, and the definition of Galactic disc properties (e.g. metallicity distribution). GES is organised in 19 working groups (WGs). We describe here the work of three of them, WG4 in charge of the selection of the targets within each cluster), W…
Open cluster dissolution rate and the initial cluster mass function in the solar neighbourhood. Modelling the age and mass distributions of clusters observed by Gaia
Open clusters (OCs) are recognised as excellent tracers of Galactic thin-disc properties. At variance with intermediate-age and old OCs, for which a significant number of studies is now available, clusters younger than 150 Myr have been mostly overlooked in terms of their chemical composition, with few exceptions. On the other hand, previous investigations seem to indicate an anomalous behaviour of young clusters, which includes slightly sub-solar iron (Fe) abundances and extreme, unexpectedly high barium (Ba) enhancements. In a series of papers, we plan to expand our understanding of this top…
A number of stellar open cluster (OC) pairs in the Milky Way occupy similar positions in the phase space (coordinates, parallax and proper motions) and therefore may constitute physically interacting systems. The characterization of such objects based on observational data is a fundamental step towards a proper understanding of their physical status and to investigate cluster pair formation in the Galaxy. In this work, we employed Gaia EDR3 data to investigate a set of 16 OCs distributed as seven stellar aggregates. We determined structural parameters and applied a decontamination technique th…
Context. Observations indicate that the fraction of potential binary star clusters in the Milky Way is either the same or lower than that of the Magellanic Clouds. The unprecedented precision in the parallax measurements by Gaia has allowed for the discovery of a growing number of new binary open clusters (OCs). Aims. We aim to survey the candidates of truly binary open clusters that are formed simultaneously, using information from the Gaia database. Methods. Based on the most recent catalog of open clusters, we investigated the interactions of adjacent binary open clusters in our Galaxy with…
Open clusters (OCs) are regarded as tracers to understand stellar evolution theory and validate stellar models. In this study, we presented a robust approach to identifying OCs. A hybrid method of pyUPMASK and RF is first used to remove field stars and determine more reliable members. An identification model based on the RF algorithm built based on 3714 OC samples from Gaia DR2 and EDR3 is then applied to identify OC candidates. The OC candidates are obtained after isochrone fitting, the advanced stellar population synthesis (ASPS) model fitting, and visual inspection. Using the proposed appro…
The Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) provided an unprecedented volume of precise astrometric and excellent photometric data. In terms of data mining the Gaia catalogue, machine learning methods have shown to be a powerful tool, for instance in the search for unknown stellar structures. Particularly, supervised and unsupervised learning methods combined together significantly improves the detection rate of open clusters. We systematically scan Gaia DR2 in a region covering the Galactic anticentre and the Perseus arm $(120 \leq l \leq 205$ and $-10 \leq b \leq 10)$, with the goal of finding any open cl…
The improvements in the precision of the published data in \textit{Gaia} EDR3 with respect to \textit{Gaia} DR2, particularly for parallaxes and proper motions, offer the opportunity to increase the number of known open clusters in the Milky Way by detecting farther and fainter objects that have so far go unnoticed. Our aim is to keep completing the open cluster census in the Milky Way with the detection of new stellar groups in the Galactic disc. We use \textit{Gaia} EDR3 up to magnitude $G = 18$ mag, increasing in one unit the magnitude limit and therefore the search volume explored in our p…

The Primordial group hypothesis states that only young enough open clusters (OCs) can be multiple, and old OCs are essentially single since the gravitational interaction between OCs in primordial groups is very weak, and the probability of gravitational capture of two unrelated OCs without disruption is very low. We test such postulate through four different studies using a manual search of Gaia EDR3 and extensive literature. First, we revisit the work of de La Fuente Marcos & de La Fuente Marcos (2009), which states that only ca. 40% of the OCs pairs are of primordial origin. However, no plau…
We determine the mass functions (MFs) and the dynamical parameters of 15 nearby open clusters (OCs) using the unprecedented data set of the Gaia Early Data Release 3. We select the members of each cluster by combining the photometric (colour and magnitude) and astrometric (parallax and proper motions) parameters of stars, minimizing the contamination from Galactic field interlopers. By comparing the observed distribution of stars along the cluster main sequence with the best-fitting synthetic population, we find the present-day MF and the binary fraction of the OCs, along with their dynamical …

By utilising Gaia EDR3 photometric / astrometric data, we studied the dynamical evolution from the obtained astrophysical, structural and dynamical parameters of the open clusters (OCs), Berkeley 10 (Be 10), Berkeley 81 (Be 81), Berkeley 89 (Be 89), and Ruprecht 135 (Ru 135). The Gaia EDR3 photometric distances from the isochrone fitting method are smaller than the ones of Gaia EDR2. The relaxation times of four OCs are smaller than their ages, in this regard, they are dynamically relaxed. Their steep overall mass function slopes mean that their low mass stars outnumber their massive ones. The…
Context: Open clusters (OCs) are widely used as test particles to investigate a variety of astrophysical phenomena, from stellar evolution to Galactic evolution. Gaia and the complementary massive spectroscopic surveys are providing an unprecedented wealth of information about these systems. Aims: The Open Cluster Chemical Abundances from Spanish Observatories (OCCASO) survey aims to complement all this work by determining OCs accurate radial velocities and chemical abundances from high-resolution, R$\geq$60\,000, spectra. Methods: Radial velocities have been obtained by cross-correlating the …

The distribution of member stars in the surroundings of an Open Cluster (OC) can shed light on the process of its formation, evolution and dissolution. The analysis of structural parameters of OCs as a function of their age and position in the Galaxy brings constraints on theoretical models of cluster evolution. The Gaia catalogue is very appropriate to find members of OCs at large distance from their centers. We aim at revisiting the membership lists of OCs from the solar vicinity, in particular by extending these membership lists to the peripheral areas thanks to Gaia EDR3. We used the clust…
Thanks to modern understanding of stellar evolution, we can accurately measure the age of Open Clusters (OCs). Given their position, they are ideal tracers of the Galactic disc. Gaia data release 2, besides providing precise parallaxes, led to the detection of many new clusters, opening a new era for the study of the Galactic disc. However, detailed information on the chemical abundance for OCs is necessary to accurately date them and to efficiently use them to probe the evolution of the disc.Mapping and exploring the Milky Way structure %to combine accurate chemical information of OCs is the …

Open clusters (OCs) are crucial for studying the formation and evolution of the Galactic disc. However, the lack of a large number of OCs analyzed homogeneously hampers the investigations about chemical patterns and the existence of Galactocentric radial and vertical gradients, or an age-metallicity relation. To overcome this, we have designed the Open Cluster Chemical Abundances from Spanish Observatories survey (OCCASO). We aim to provide homogeneous radial velocities, physical parameters and individual chemical abundances of six or more Red Clump stars for a sample of 25 old and intermediat…
Open Clusters (OCs) can trace with a great accuracy the evolution of the Galactic disk. The aim of this work is to study the kinematical behavior of the OC population over time. We take advantage of the latest age determinations of OCs to investigate the correlations of the 6D phase space coordinates and orbital properties with age. We also investigate the rotation curve of the Milky Way traced by OCs and we compare it to that of other observational or theoretical studies. We gathered nearly 30000 Radial Velocity (RV) measurements of OC members from both Gaia-RVS data and ground based surveys …
We use Gaia DR2 to hunt for runaway stars from the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We search a region extending 45° around the ONC and out to 1 kpc to find sources that overlapped in angular position with the cluster in the last ~10 Myr. We find ~17,000 runaway/walkaway candidates satisfy this 2D traceback condition. Most of these are expected to be contaminants, e.g., caused by Galactic streaming motions of stars at different distances. We thus examine six further tests to help identify real runaways, namely: (1) possessing young stellar object (YSO) colors and magnitudes based on Gaia optical ph…
Open clusters (OCs) are popular tracers of the structure and evolutionary history of the Galactic disk. The OC population is often considered to be complete within 1.8 kpc of the Sun. The recent Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) allows the latter claim to be challenged. We perform a systematic search for new OCs in the direction of Perseus using precise and accurate astrometry from Gaia DR2. We implement a coarse-to-fine search method. First, we exploit spatial proximity using a fast density-aware partitioning of the sky via a k-d tree in the spatial domain of Galactic coordinates, (l, b). Secondly, w…
We propose a mixture model of open clusters (OCs) in the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to measure the OC properties, including isochrone parameters (age, distance, metallicity, and dust extinction), stellar mass function (MF), and binary parameters (binary fraction and mass-ratio distribution), with high precision and reliability. The model treats an OC in the CMD as a mixture of single and binary member stars and field stars in the same region. The cluster members are modeled using a theoretical stellar model, MF and binary properties. The field component is modeled nonparametrically using …
Although a large number of Galactic open clusters (OCs) have been identified, the internal kinematic properties (e.g., rotation) of almost all the known OCs are still far from clear. With the high-precision astrometric data of Gaia EDR3, we have developed a methodology to unveil the rotational properties of the Praesepe cluster. Statistics of the three-dimensional residual motions of the member stars reveal the presence of Praesepe's rotation and determine its spatial rotation axis. The mean rotation velocity of the Praesepe cluster within its tidal radius is estimated to be 0.2 $\pm$ 0.05 km …
