We study the finite temperature localization transition in the spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator. Simulating the quenched approximation of QCD, we calculate the mobility edge, separating localized and delocalized modes in the spectrum. We do this at several temperatures just above the deconfining transition and by extrapolation we determine the temperature where the mobility edge vanishes and localized modes completely disappear from the spectrum. We find that this temperature, where even the lowest Dirac eigenmodes become delocalized, coincides with the critical temperature of the deconfining transition. This result, together with our previously obtained similar findings for staggered fermions shows that quark localization at the deconfining temperature is independent of the fermion discretization, suggesting that deconfinement and localization of the lowest Dirac eigenmodes are closely related phenomena.
In this talk I will emphasize the role of the Truncated Overlap Fermions in showing the equivalence between the Domain Wall and Overlap Fermions up to an irrelevant factor in the fermionic integration measure. I will also show how Domain Wall type fermions with a finite number of flavors can be used to accelerate propagator calculations of their light partner in the infinite flavor limit.
HMC histories for light dynamical overlap fermions tend to stay in a fixed topological sector for many trajectories, so that the different sectors are not sampled properly. Therefore the suitable summation of observables, which have been measured in separate sectors, is a major challenge. We explore several techniques for this issue, based on data for the chiral condensate and the (analogue of the) pion mass in the 2-flavour Schwinger model with dynamical overlap-hypercube fermions.
Recently, Narayanan and Neuberger proposed that the fermion determinant for a lattice chiral gauge theory be defined by an overlap formula. The motivation for that formula comes from Kaplan's five dimensional lattice domain wall fermions. In the case that the target continuum theory contains $4n$ chiral families, we show that the effective action defined by overlap formula is identical to the effective action of a modified waveguide model that has extra bosonic ghost fields. This raises serious questions about the viability of the overlap formula for defining chiral gauge theories on the latti…
We present a theoretical foundation for the Index theorem in naive and minimally doubled lattice fermions by studying the spectral flow of a Hermitean version of Dirac operators. We utilize the point splitting method to implement flavored mass terms, which play an important role in constructing proper Hermitean operators. We show the spectral flow correctly detects the index of the would-be zero modes which is determined by gauge field topology. Using the flavored mass terms, we present new types of overlap fermions from the naive fermion kernels, with a number of flavors that depends on the c…
The application of Random Matrix Theory to the Dirac operator of QCD yields predictions for the probability distributions of the lowest eigenvalues. We measured Dirac operator spectra using massless overlap fermions in quenched QCD at topological charge ν= 0, +- 1 and +- 2, and found agreement with those predictions - at least for the first non-zero eigenvalue - if the volume exceeds about (1.2 fm)^4.
Overlap fermion on the lattice has been shown to properly reproduce topological aspects of gauge fields. In this paper, we review the derivation of Overlap fermion formalism in a torus of three space-time dimensions. Using the formalism, we show how to use the Overlap fermion determinants in the massless and infinite mass limits to construct different continuum topological gauge actions, such as the level-$k$ Chern-Simons action, ``half-CS" term and the mixed Chern-Simons (BF) coupling, in a gauge-invariant lattice UV regulated manner. Taking special Abelian and non-Abelian background fields, …
We present selected recent results of the QCDSF collaboration on the localization and dimensionality of low overlap eigenmodes and of the topological density in the quenched SU(3) vacuum. We discuss the correlations between the topological structure revealed by overlap fermions without filtering and the confining monopole and P-vortex structure obtained in the Indirect Maximal Center Gauge.
Recently, Grabowska and Kaplan proposed a four-dimensional lattice formulation of chiral gauge theories on the basis of a chiral overlap operator. We compute the classical continuum limit of the fermion number anomaly in this formulation. Unexpectedly, we find that the continuum limit contains a term which is not Lorentz invariant. The term is, however, proportional to the gauge anomaly coefficient, and thus the fermion number anomaly in this lattice formulation automatically restores the Lorentz-invariant form when and only when the anomaly cancellation condition is met.
We find a representation for the determinant of a Dirac operator in an even number $D= 2 n$ of Euclidean dimensions as an overlap between two different vacua, each one corresponding to a bosonic theory with a quadratic action in $2 n + 1$ dimensions, with identical kinetic terms, but differing in their mass terms. This resembles the overlap representation of a fermionic determinant (although bosonic fields are used here). This representation may find applications to lattice field theory, as an alternative to other bosonized representations for Dirac determinants already proposed.
An overlap method for regularizing Majorana--Weyl fermions interacting with gauge fields is presented. A mod(2) index is introduced in relation to the anomalous violation of a discrete global chiral symmetry. Most of the paper is restricted to 2 dimensions but generalizations to 2+8k dimensions should be straightforward.
We discuss the impact of various improvements on simulations of dynamical overlap fermions using the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. We focus on the usage of fat links and multiple pseudo-fermion fields.
Lattice fermions in a fluctuating gauge field can show localization, much like electrons in a disordered potential. We study the spectrum of localized and extended states of supercritical Wilson fermions in gauge ensembles generated with plaquette and improved actions. When the Wilson fermion operator is used to construct the overlap kernel, the mobility edge, that is the boundary between the localized and extended states, determines the range of the kernel.
We briefly review the overlap formalism for chiral gauge theories, the overlap Dirac operator for massless fermions and its connection to domain wall fermions. We describe properties of the overlap Dirac operator, and methods to implement it numerically. Finally, we give some examples of quenched calculations of chiral symmetry breaking and topology with overlap fermions.
An overview of the current status of algorithmic approaches to dynamical overlap fermions is given. In particular the issue of changing the topological sector is discussed.
In order to construct improved overlap fermions, we start from a short ranged approximate Ginsparg-Wilson fermion and insert it into the overlap formula. We show that its polynomial evaluation is accelerated considerably compared to the standard Neuberger fermion. In addition the degree of locality is strongly improved.
I review the lattice formulations of vector-like gauge theories (e.g. QCD) with domain-wall/overlap fermions, and discuss how to optimize the chiral symmetry for any finite $ N_s $ (sites in the fifth dimension). In this formulation, quark propagators in gauge background can be computed efficiently through the effective 4D lattice Dirac operator.
We discuss the kernel spectrum, locality properties and the axial-vector renormalization constant of UV-filtered overlap fermions. We find that UV-filtered overlap fermions have a better conditioned kernel, better locality and an axial-vector renormalization constant closer to 1 than their unfiltered counterparts, even if the shift parameter $ρ$ is simply set to 1.
We perform a systematic study of low-lying eigenmodes of $H_w$ with various gauge actions to find the optimal choice for dynamical overlap fermion simulations, with which one may achieve lower numerical cost for HMC and better locality property of the overlap kernel. For this purpose, our study is made with emphasis on the distribution of low-lying eigenvalues and the mobility edge with and without dynamical overlap fermions.
We report on our efforts to implement overlap fermions on NVIDIA GPUs using CUDA, commenting on the algorithms used, implemetation details, and the performance of our code.
We present first results of classical-statistical real-time simulations of anomalous transport phenomena with overlap fermions. We find that even on small lattices overlap fermions reproduce the real-time anomaly equation with much better precision than Wilson-Dirac fermions on an order of magnitude larger lattices. The difference becomes much more pronounced for quickly changing electromagnetic fields, especially if one takes into account the back-reaction of fermions on electromagnetism. As test cases, we consider chirality pumping in parallel electric and magnetic fields and mixing between …
We study four dimensional large-N SU(N) Yang-Mills theory coupled to adjoint overlap fermions on a single site lattice. Lattice simulations along with perturbation theory show that the bare quark mass has to be taken to zero as one takes the continuum limit in order to be in the physically relevant center-symmetric phase. But, it seems that it is possible to take the continuum limit with any renormalized quark mass and still be in the center-symmetric physics. We have also conducted a study of the correlations between Polyakov loop operators in different directions and obtained the range for t…
In this contribution the costs of simulations employing domain wall and overlap fermions are estimated. In the discussion we will stay within the quenched approximation.
Recently a formulation of overlap fermions at finite density based on an analytic continuation of the sign function was proposed. We study this proposal by analyzing the energy and number densities for free fermions as a function of the chemical potential and the temperature. Our results show that overlap fermions with chemical potential give rise to the correct continuum behavior.
It is shown that free lattice Dirac fermions defined by overlap Dirac operator fulfill the Osterwalder-Schrader reflection positivity condition with respect to the link-reflection.
Studies of non-interacting lattice fermions give an estimate of the size of discretization errors and finite size effects for more interesting problems like finite temperature QCD. We present a calculation of the thermodynamic equation of state for free domain wall and overlap fermions.
I show how to avoid a two level nested conjugate gradient procedure in the context of Hybrid Monte Carlo with the overlap fermionic action. The resulting procedure is quite similar to Hybrid Monte Carlo with domain wall fermions, but is more flexible and therefore has some potential worth exploring.
We present a set of related Hybrid Monte Carlo methods to simulate an arbitrary number of dynamical overlap fermions. Each fermion is represented by a chiral pseudo-fermion field. The new algorithm reduces critical slowing down in the chiral limit and for sectors of nontrivial topology.
The overlap hypercube fermion is a variant of a chirally symmetric lattice fermion, which is endowed with a higher level of locality than the standard overlap fermion. We apply this formulation in quenched QCD simulations with light quarks. In the p-regime we evaluate the masses of light pseudoscalar and vector mesons, as well as the pion decay constant and the renormalisation constant Z_A. In the epsilon-regime we present results for the leading Low Energy Constants of the chiral Lagrangian, Sigma and F_pi. To this end, we perform fits to predictions by chiral Random Matrix Theory and by diff…
We present results of a hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm for dynamical, $n_f=2$, four-dimensional QCD with overlap fermions. The fermionic force requires careful treatment, when changing topological sectors. The pion mass dependence of the topological susceptibility is studied on $6^4$ and $12\cdot 6^3$ lattices. The results are transformed into physical units.
Using lattice overlap fermions, we have computed the 1-loop renormalization factors of several operators that measure DIS structure functions and weak amplitudes. Computer codes written in the algebraic manipulation language FORM have been used. The improvement of the operators is also discussed.
In a recent article Hasenfratz and von Allmen have suggested a fixed point action for two flavors of Weyl fermions on the lattice with gauge group SU(2). The block-spin transformation they use maps the chiral and vector symmetries of the underlying vector theory onto two equations of the Ginsparg-Wilson (GW) type. We show that an overlap Dirac operator can be constructed which solves both GW equations simultaneously. We discuss the properties of this overlap operator and its projection onto lattice Weyl fermions which seems to be free of artefacts, in particular the projection operators are in…
There exist chiral gauge models in two dimensions that have massless composite fermions. Two examples are presented and it is suggested that they be accepted as benchmark test-cases for generic proposals of non-perturbatively regulating chiral gauge theories in any dimension. We apply the overlap to the simpler of the two benchmarks and present the results of a numerical simulation of modest size.
We study quenched QCD just above the phase transition temperature using overlap Fermions. Exact zero modes of the overlap operator are localized. Chiral symmetry is restored, as indicated by the behavior of the chiral condensate after subtracting the effects of zero modes. The vector and pseudo-scalar screening masses are close to ideal gas values.
I apply a recently developed algorithm for reweighting simulations of lattice QCD from one quark mass to another to simulations performed with overlap fermions in the epsilon regime. I test it by computing the condensate from distributions of the low lying eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. Results seem favorable.
This paper reviews the most popular methods which are used in lattice QCD to compute the determinant of the lattice Dirac operator: Gaussian integral representation and noisy methods. Both of them lead naturally to matrix function problems. We review the most recent development in Krylov subspace evaluation of matrix functions. The second part of the paper reviews the formal relationship and algebraic structure of domain wall and overlap fermions. We review the multigrid algorithm to invert the overlap operator. It is described here as a preconditioned Jacobi iteration where the preconditioner…
The action of the overlap-Dirac operator on a vector is typically implemented indirectly through a multi-shift conjugate gradient solver. The compute-time required depends upon the condition number, $κ$, of the matrix that is used as the overlap kernel. While the Wilson action is typically used as the overlap kernel, the FLIC (Fat Link Irrelevant Clover) action has an improved condition number and provides up to a factor of two speedup in evaluating the overlap action. We summarize recent progress on the use of FLIC overlap fermions.
We present two improvements to our previous dynamical overlap HMC algorithm. We introduce a new method of differentiating the eigenvectors of the Kernel operator, which removes an instability in the fermionic force. Secondly, by simulating part of the fermion determinant exactly, without pseudo-fermions, we are able to increase the rate of topological tunnelling by a factor of more than ten, reducing the auto-correlation.
We describe an explicit construction of approximate Ginsparg-Wilson fermions for QCD. We use ingredients of perfect action origin, and further elements. The spectrum of the lattice Dirac operator reveals the quality of the approximation. We focus on beta =6 for optimisation. Such fermions are intended to be inserted into the overlap formula. Hence we also test the speed of convergence under polynomial evaluation of the overlap formula.
Numerical experiences are reported with overlap fermions which employ the Brillouin action as a kernel. After discussing the dispersion relations of both the kernel and the resulting chiral action, some of the physics features are addressed on quenched backgrounds. We find that the overlap with Brillouin kernel is much better localized than the overlap with Wilson kernel. Also a preliminary account is given of the cost of the formulation, in terms of CPU time and memory.
We describe a conceptually simple, but important test for the overlap approach to the construction of lattice chiral gauge theories. We explain the equivalence of the overlap formula with a certain waveguide model for a simple set of gauge configurations (the trivial orbit). This equivalence is helpful in carrying out the test, and casts serious doubts on the viability of the overlap approach. A recent note by Narayanan and Neuberger which points out a mistake in our previous work is irrelevant in this context.
Overlap formalism deals with the construction of chiral gauge theories on the lattice. These set of lectures provide a pedagogical introduction to the subject with emphasis on chiral anomalies and gauge field topology. Subtleties associated with the generating functional for gauge theories coupled to chiral fermions are discussed.
We calculate the 1-loop renormalization of the fermion self-energy, all local fermion bilinears, as well as a set of extended bilinears which form a basis corresponding to moments of the parton distribution functions. We use the overlap action for fermions and Symanzik improved action for gluons. Our results are presented as a function of the overlap parameter rho and the parameters entering the Symanzik action.
We formulate the massive overlap fermions on anisotropic lattices. We find that the dispersion relation for the overlap fermion resembles the continuum form in the low-momentum region once the bare parameters are properly tuned. The quark self-energy and the quark field renormalization constants are calculated to one-loop in bare lattice perturbation theory. We argue that massive domain wall quarks might be helpful in lattice QCD studies on heavy-light hadron spectroscopy.
In the previous paper we developed a strong-coupling expansion for the lattice QCD with the overlap fermions and showed that Lüsher's "extended" chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in some parameter region of the overlap fermions. In this paper, we obtain a low-energy effective action and show that there exist quasi-Nambu-Goldsone bosons which are identified as the pions. The pion field is a {\em nonlocal} composite field of quark and anti-quark even at the strong-coupling limit because of the nonlocality of the overlap fermion formalism and Lüsher's chiral symmetry. The pions become massl…
We present results for the nucleon's axial charge g_A and the first moment <x> of the unpolarized parton distribution function from a simulation of quenched overlap fermions.
Three aspects of symmetry structure of lattice chiral fermion in the overlap formalism are discussed. By the weak coupling expansion of the overlap Dirac operator, the axial anomaly associated to the chiral transformation proposed by Luescher is evaluated and is shown to have the correct form of the topological charge density for perturbative backgrounds. Next we discuss the exponential suppression of the self-energy correction of the lightest mode in the domain-wall fermion/truncated overlap. Finally, we consider a supersymmetric extension of the overlap formula in the case of the chiral mult…
Renormalizability of a lattice chiral fermion is studied at one loop level in the overlap formulation in four dimensions. The fermion chirality is examined including the self-energy corrections due to gauge interactions. Divergent terms breaking the chiral symmetry do not appear and the chiral fermion is renormalized, preserving the correct chiral properties without adding new counter-terms or tuning the parameters involved. The divergent part of the wave function renormalization factor agrees with that of the continuum theory. The overlap formulation of a lattice chiral fermion has passed the…
We present first, exploratory results of a hybrid Monte-Carlo algorithm for dynamical, n_f=2, four-dimensional QCD with overlap fermions. As expected, the computational requirements are typically two orders of magnitude larger for the dynamical overlap formalism than for the more conventional (Wilson or staggered) formulations.
We study cutoff effects at tree-level of perturbation theory for maximally twisted mass Wilson, overlap and the recently proposed Creutz fermions. We demonstrate that all three kind of lattice fermions exhibit the expected O(a^2) scaling behaviour in the lattice spacing. In addition, the sizes of these cutoff effects are comparable for the three kinds of lattice fermions considered here. Furthermore, we analyze situations when twisted mass fermions are not exactly at maximal twist and when overlap fermions are studied in comparison to twisted mass fermions when the quark masses are not matched…
We investigate chiral properties of the overlap lattice fermion by using solvable model in two dimensions, the gauged Gross-Neveu model. In this model, the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in the presence of small but finite fermion mass. We calculate the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone(NG) boson mass as a function of the bare fermion mass and two parameters in the overlap formula. We find that the quasi-NG boson mass has desired properties as a result of the extended chiral symmetry found by Lüscher. We also examine the PCAC relation and find that it is satisfied in the continuum limit. Comparis…
We present a comparison of a number of iterative solvers of linear systems of equations for obtaining the fermion propagator in lattice QCD. In particular, we consider chirally invariant overlap and chirally improved Wilson (maximally) twisted mass fermions. The comparison of both formulations of lattice QCD is performed at four fixed values of the pion mass between 230MeV and 720MeV. For overlap fermions we address adaptive precision and low mode preconditioning while for twisted mass fermions we discuss even/odd preconditioning. Taking the best available algorithms in each case we find that …
We summarize our recent investigations of lattice QCD with dynamical overlap fermions. We sketch algorithmic issues and our approach to solving them. We show our measurement of the topological susceptibility. We describe a computation of the chiral condensate using an analysis of the distribution of eigenmodes of the Dirac operator and Random Matrix Theory.
We consider overlap-Dirac fermions at non-zero bare coupling and for a small hopping parameter, or, equivalently, large $|M|$ with $M$ the domain-wall height. We prove the existence of a phase at large positive $M$ where the abelian axial group $U_A(1)$ is a symmetry, and the corresponding pseudo-scalar is an exact Goldstone boson. We also provide a conjecture for the phase diagram of asymptotically free gauge theories with overlap-Dirac fermions. In particular, we suggest that, for large gauge coupling, the massive-fermion phase at negative $M$ possibly extends to all $M<4$.
We present the results of a mixed action approach, employing dynamical twisted mass fermions in the sea sector and overlap valence fermions, with the aim of testing the continuum limit scaling behaviour of physical quantities, taking the pion decay constant as an example. To render the computations practical, we impose for this purpose a fixed finite volume with lattice size $L\approx1.3$ fm. We also briefly review the techniques we have used to deal with overlap fermions.
Overlap fermions are a powerful tool for investigating the chiral and topological structure of the vacuum and the thermal states of QCD. We study various chiral and topological aspects of the finite temperature phase transition of N_f=2 flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions, using valence overlap fermions as a probe. Particular emphasis is placed upon the analysis of the spectral density and the localisation properties of the eigenmodes as well as on the local structure of topological charge fluctuations in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition. The calculations are done on 16^3x8 la…
