An approach to obtain the structural properties of additive binary hard-sphere mixtures is presented. Such an approach, which is a nontrivial generalization of the one recently used for monocomponent hard-sphere fluids [S. Pieprzyk, A. C. Brańka, and D. M. Heyes, Phys. Rev. E 95, 062104 (2017)], combines accurate molecular-dynamics simulation data, the pole structure representation of the total correlation functions, and the Ornstein-Zernike equation. A comparison of the direct correlation functions obtained with the present scheme with those derived from theoretical results stemming from the Percus-Yevick (PY) closure and the so-called rational-function approximation (RFA) is performed. The density dependence of the leading poles of the Fourier transforms of the total correlation functions and the decay of the pair correlation functions of the mixtures are also addressed and compared to the predictions of the two theoretical approximations. A very good overall agreement between the results of the present scheme and those of the RFA is found, thus suggesting that the latter (which is an improvement over the PY approximation) can safely be used to predict reasonably well the long-range behavior, including the structural crossover, of the correlation functions of additive binary hard-sphere mixtures.
The problem of demixing in a binary fluid mixture of highly asymmetric additive hard spheres is revisited. A comparison is presented between the results derived previously using truncated virial expansions for three finite size ratios with those that one obtains with the same approach in the extreme case in which one of the components consists of point particles. Since this latter system is known not to exhibit fluid-fluid segregation, the similarity observed for the behavior of the critical constants arising in the truncated series in all instances, while not being conclusive, may cast seriou…
A possible approximate route to obtain the equation of state of the monodisperse hard-sphere system in the metastable fluid region from the knowledge of the equation of state of a hard-sphere mixture at high densities is discussed. The proposal is illustrated by using recent Monte Carlo simulation data for the pressure of a binary mixture. It is further shown to exhibit high internal consistency.
Monte Carlo simulations on the structural properties of ternary fluid mixtures of additive hard spheres are reported. The results are compared with those obtained from a recent analytical approximation [S. B. Yuste, A. Santos, and M. Lopez de Haro, J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3683 (1998)] to the radial distribution functions of hard-sphere mixtures and with the results derived from the solution of the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation with both the Martynov-Sarkisov and the Percus-Yevick closures. Very good agreement between the results of the first two approaches and simulation is observed, with a n…
An equation of state for a multicomponent mixture of non-additive hard spheres in $d$ dimensions is proposed. It yields a rather simple density dependence and constitutes a natural extension of the equation of state for additive hard spheres proposed by us [A. Santos, S. B. Yuste, and M. López de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)]. The proposal relies on the known exact second and third virial coefficients and requires as input the compressibility factor of the one-component system. A comparison is carried out both to another recent theoretical proposal based on a similar philosophy and to the ava…
We construct a non-perturbative fully analytical approximation for the thermodynamics and the structure of nonadditive hard-sphere fluid mixtures. The method essentially lies in a heuristic extension of the Percus-Yevick solution for additive hard spheres. Extensive comparison with Monte Carlo simulation data shows a generally good agreement, especially in the case of like-like radial distribution functions.
The fourth virial coefficient of additive hard-sphere mixtures, as predicted by the Percus-Yevick (PY) and hypernetted-chain (HNC) theories, is derived via the compressibility, virial, and chemical-potential routes, the outcomes being compared with exact results. Except in the case of the HNC compressibility route, the other five expressions exhibit a common structure involving the first three moments of the size distribution. In both theories the chemical-potential route is slightly better than the virial one and the best behavior is generally presented by the compressibility route. Moreover,…
We show that the formal procedure of integrating out the degrees of freedom of the small spheres in a binary hard-sphere mixture works equally well for non-additive as it does for additive mixtures. For highly asymmetric mixtures (small size ratios) the resulting effective Hamiltonian of the one-component fluid of big spheres, which consists of an infinite number of many-body interactions, should be accurately approximated by truncating after the term describing the effective pair interaction. Using a density functional treatment developed originally for additive hard-sphere mixtures we determ…
A detailed analysis of two different theoretical equations of state for a binary mixture of additive hard disks [C. Barrio and J. R. Solana, Phys. Rev. E 63, 011201 (2001); A. Santos, S. B. Yuste and M. Lopez de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)], including their comparison with Monte Carlo results, is carried out. It is found that both proposals, which require the equation of state of the single component system as input, lead to comparable accuracy when the same input is used in both, but the one advocated by Santos et al. is simpler and complies with the exact limit in which the small disks are…
A universality ansatz for the contact values of a multicomponent mixture of additive hard spheres is used to propose new formulae for the case of disparate-size binary mixtures. A comparison with simulation data and with a recent proposal by Alawneh and Henderson for binary mixtures shows reasonably good agreement with the predictions for the contact values of the large-large radial distribution functions. A discussion on the usefulness and limitations of the new proposals is also presented.
Based on fundamental measure theory, a Helmholtz free energy density functional for three-component mixtures of hard spheres with general, non-additive interaction distances is constructed. The functional constitutes a generalization of the previously given theory for binary non-additive mixtures. The diagrammatic structure of the spatial integrals in both functionals is of star-like (or tree-like) topology. The ternary diagrams possess a higher degree of complexity than the binary diagrams. Results for partial pair correlation functions, obtained via the Ornstein-Zernike route from the second…
We calculate for the first time the full phase-diagram of an asymmetric non-additive hard-sphere mixture. The non-additivity strongly affects the crystallization and the fluid-fluid phase-separation. The global topology of the phase-diagram is controlled by an effective size-ratio y_{eff}, while the fluid-solid coexistence scales with the depth of the effective potential well.
The structural properties of additive binary hard-sphere mixtures are addressed as a follow-up of a previous paper [S. Pieprzyk et al., Phys. Rev. E 101, 012117 (2020)]. The so-called rational-function approximation method and an approach combining accurate molecular dynamics simulation data, the pole structure representation of the total correlation functions, and the Ornstein-Zernike equation are considered. The density, composition, and size-ratio dependencies of the leading poles of the Fourier transforms of the total correlation functions $h_{ij} (r)$ of such mixtures are presented, those…
A theoretical model for polydisperse systems of hard spheres is said to be truncatable when the excess free energy depends on the size distribution through a finite number $K$ of moments. This Note proves an exact scaling relation for truncatable free energies, which allows to reduce the effective degrees of freedom to $K-2$ independent combinations of the moments.
In a recent publication[PRE 86, 04012 (2012)], Santos has presented a self-consistency condition that can be used to limit the possible forms of Fundamental Measure Theory. Here, the direct correlation function resulting from the Santos functional is derived and it is found to diverge for all densities.
In this paper, we present a cluster algorithm for the numerical simulations of non-additive hard-core mixtures. This algorithm allows one to simulate and equilibrate systems with a number of particles two orders of magnitude larger than previous simulations. The phase separation for symmetric binary mixtures is studied for different non-additvities as well as for the Widom-Rowlinson model (B. Widom and J. S. Rowlinson, J. Chem. Phys. 52, 1670 (1970)) in two and three dimensions. The critical densities are determined from finite size scaling. The critical exponents for all the non-additivities …
Polydisperse mixtures are those in which components with a whole range of sizes are present. It is shown that the fluid phase of polydisperse hard spheres is thermodynamically unstable unless the density of large spheres decreases at least exponentially as their size increases. The instability is with respect to the large spheres crystallising out into multiple solid phases.
The fundamental measure density functional theory for hard spheres is generalized to binary mixtures of arbitrary positive and moderate negative non-additivity between unlike components. In bulk the theory predicts fluid-fluid phase separation into phases with different chemical compositions. The location of the accompanying critical point agrees well with previous results from simulations over a broad range of non-additivities and both for symmetric and highly asymmetric size ratios. Results for partial pair correlation functions show good agreement with simulation data.
Using fundamental-measure density functional theory we investigate entropic wetting in an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres with positive non-additivity. We consider a general planar hard wall, where preferential adsorption is induced by a difference in closest approach of the different species and the wall. Close to bulk fluid-fluid coexistence the phase rich in the minority component adsorbs either through a series of first-order layering transitions, where an increasing number of liquid layers adsorbs sequentially, or via a critical wetting transition, where a thick film grows conti…
A recently proposed rational-function approximation [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{84}, 041201 (2011)] for the structural properties of nonadditive hard spheres is applied to evaluate analytically (in Laplace space) the local density profiles of multicomponent nonadditive hard-sphere mixtures near a planar nonadditive hard wall. The theory is assessed by comparison with $NVT$ Monte Carlo simulations of binary mixtures with a size ratio 1:3 in three possible scenarios: a mixture with either positive or negative nonadditivity near an additive wall, an additive mixture with a nonadditive wall, and a nonad…
Recent Monte Carlo simulation results for the contact values of polydisperse hard-sphere mixtures at a hard planar wall are considered in the light of a universality assumption made in approximate theoretical approaches. It is found that the data seem to fulfill the universality ansatz reasonably well, thus opening up the possibility of inferring properties of complicated systems from the study of simpler ones
Particle size polydispersity can help to inhibit crystallization of the hard-sphere fluid into close-packed structures at high packing fractions and thus is often employed to create model glass-forming systems. Nonetheless, it is known that hard-sphere mixtures with modest polydispersity still have ordered ground states. Here, we demonstrate by computer simulation that hard-sphere mixtures with increased polydispersity fractionate on the basis of particle size, and a bimodal subpopulation favors formation of topologically close-packed C14 and C15 Laves phases in coexistence with a disordered p…
An analysis of the direct correlation functions $c_{ij} (r)$ of binary additive hard-sphere mixtures of diameters $σ_s$ and $σ_b$ (where the subscripts $s$ and $b$ refer to the "small" and "big" spheres, respectively), as obtained with the rational-function approximation method and the WM scheme introduced in previous work [S.\ Pieprzyk \emph{et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ E {\bf 101}, 012117 (2020)], is performed. The results indicate that the functions $c_{ss}(r<σ_s)$ and $c_{bb}(r<σ_b)$ in both approaches are monotonic and can be well represented by a low-order polynomial, while the function $c_{sb}…

Density functional theory is used to study binary colloidal fluids consisting of hard spheres and thin platelets in their bulk and near a planar hard wall. This system exhibits liquid-liquid coexistence of a phase that is rich in spheres (poor in platelets) and a phase that is poor in spheres (rich in platelets). For the mixture near a planar hard wall, we find that the phase rich in spheres wets the wall completely upon approaching the liquid demixing binodal from the sphere-poor phase, provided the concentration of the platelets is smaller than a threshold value which marks a first-order wet…
We provide an exact mapping between the density functional of a binary mixture and that of the effective one-component fluid in the limit of infinite asymmetry. The fluid of parallel hard cubes is thus mapped onto that of parallel adhesive hard cubes. Its phase behaviour reveals that demixing of a very asymmetric mixture can only occur between a solvent-rich fluid and a permeated large particle solid or between two large particle solids with different packing fractions. Comparing with hard spheres mixtures we conclude that the phase behaviour of very asymmetric hard-particle mixtures can be de…
A binary fluid mixture of non-additive hard spheres characterized by a size ratio $γ=σ_2/σ_1<1$ and a non-additivity parameter $Δ=2σ_{12}/(σ_1+σ_2)-1$ is considered in infinitely many dimensions. From the equation of state in the second virial approximation (which is exact in the limit $d\to\infty$) a demixing transition with a critical consolute point at a packing fraction scaling as $η\sim d 2^{-d}$ is found, even for slightly negative non-additivity, if $Δ>-{1/8}(\lnγ)^2$. Arguments concerning the stability of the demixing with respect to freezing are provided.
The contact values $g_{ij}(σ_{ij})$ of the radial distribution functions of a $d$-dimensional mixture of (additive) hard spheres are considered. A `universality' assumption is put forward, according to which $g_{ij}(σ_{ij})=G(η, z_{ij})$, where $G$ is a common function for all the mixtures of the same dimensionality, regardless of the number of components, $η$ is the packing fraction of the mixture, and $z_{ij}$ is a dimensionless parameter that depends on the size distribution and the diameters of spheres $i$ and $j$. For $d=3$, this universality assumption holds for the contact values of the…
Different theoretical approaches for the thermodynamic properties and the equation of state for multicomponent mixtures of nonadditive hard spheres in $d$ dimensions are presented in a unified way. These include the theory by Hamad, our previous formulation, the original MIX1 theory, a recently proposed modified MIX1 theory, as well as a nonlinear extension of the MIX1 theory proposed in this paper. Explicit expressions for the compressibility factor, Helmholtz free energy, and second, third, and fourth virial coefficients are provided. A comparison is carried out with recent Monte Carlo data …
In a recent letter, Buhot proposes that entropy driven phase-separation in hard-core binary mixtures is directly related to a bond-percolation transition. However, at least for binary hard-sphere mixtures, calculations based on an accurate approximation to g_{ll}(r) demonstrate that n_b varies widely along the phase-boundaries calculated directly by simulations, implying that bond-percolation is unrelated to the phase-separation in these systems.
We study 2-dimensional binary mixtures of parallel squares as well as of disks. A recent cluster algorithm allows us to establish an entropic demixing transition between a homogeneously packed fluid phase and a demixed phase of a practically close-packed aggregate of large squares surrounded by a fluid of small squares.
The phase diagram of a binary fluid mixture of highly asymmetric additive hard spheres is investigated. Demixing is analyzed from the exact low-density expansions of the thermodynamic properties of the mixture and compared with the fluid-fluid separation based on the effective one-component description. Differences in the results obtained from both approaches, which have been claimed to be equivalent, are pointed out and their possible origin is discussed. It is argued that to deal with these differences new theoretical approximations should be devised.
We analyze the structure of the Fundamental Measure Theory for the free energy density functional of hard sphere mixtures. A comparative study of the different versions of the theory, and other density functional approaches, is done in terms of their generic form for the three-points direct correlation function, which shows clearly the main advantages and problems of the different approximations. A recently developed version for the monocomponent case is extended to mixtures of hard spheres with different radii, and a new prescription is presented to obtain the exact dimensional crossover of t…
Relaxation of the additivity condition on the interaction length between unlike species in a binary mixture of soft disks opens up a rich variety of structures in both crystal and amorphous states with an associated diverse range of relaxation dynamics. We report on MD simulation studies of binary soft disks with negative deviations from additivity that include evidence of accumulation of crystal-like structures in metastable liquids prior to crystallization and the occurrence of a liquid to random-tiling transition.
We consider binary mixtures of soft repulsive spherical particles and calculate the depletion interaction between two big spheres mediated by the fluid of small spheres, using different theoretical and simulation methods. The validity of the theoretical approach, a virial expansion in terms of the density of the small spheres, is checked against simulation results. Attention is given to the approach toward the hard-sphere limit, and to the effect of density and temperature on the strength of the depletion potential. Our results indicate, surprisingly, that even a modest degree of softness in t…
A detailed comparison between the Boublík-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland (BMCSL)equation of state of hard-sphere mixtures is made with Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of the same compositions. The Labík and Smith simulation technique [S. Labík and W. R. Smith, Mol. Simul. \textbf{12}, 23-31 (1994)] was used to implement the Widom particle insertion method to calculate the excess chemical potential, $βμ_0^\text{ex}$, of a test particle of variable diameter, $σ_0$, immersed in a hard-sphere fluid mixture with different compositions and values of the packing fraction, $η$. Use is made of t…
In fundamental-measure theories the bulk excess free-energy density of a hard-sphere fluid mixture is assumed to depend on the partial number densities ${ρ_i}$ only through the four scaled-particle-theory variables ${ξ_α}$, i.e., $Φ({ρ_i})\toΦ({ξ_α})$. By imposing consistency conditions, it is proven here that such a dependence must necessarily have the form $Φ({ξ_α})=-ξ_0\ln(1-ξ_3)+Ψ(y)ξ_1ξ_2/(1-ξ_3)$, where $y\equiv {ξ_2^2}/{12πξ_1 (1-ξ_3)}$ is a scaled variable and $Ψ(y)$ is an arbitrary dimensionless scaling function which can be determined from the free-energy density of the one-component…
In a previous work, a simple approach to derive the jamming packing fraction of a hard-sphere mixture from the knowledge of the random close-packing fraction of the monocomponent system was proposed. Now, an extension of that approach is applied to provide an approximate formula for the densest packing fraction of a given hard-sphere mixture in terms of the fcc close-packing fraction of a monocomponent hard-sphere system and of a single parameter encapsulating the dependence on the size ratios and the number of spheres in the unit cell. Comparison with recent results for such densest packing f…
We study the theoretical phase behavior of an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres, of which the smaller component is monodisperse and the larger component is polydisperse. The interactions are modelled in terms of the second virial coefficient and are assumed to be additive hard sphere interactions. The polydisperse component is subdivided into sub-components and has an average size ten times the size of the monodisperse component. We give the set of equations that defines the phase diagram for mixtures with more than two components in a solvent. We calculate the theoretical liquid-liqui…
A simple analytic theory for mixtures of hard spheres and larger polymers with excluded volume interactions is developed. The mixture is shown to exhibit extensive immiscibility. For large polymers with strong excluded volume interactions, the density of monomers at the critical point for demixing decreases as one over the square root of the length of the polymer, while the density of spheres tends to a constant. This is very different to the behaviour of mixtures of hard spheres and ideal polymers, these mixtures although even less miscible than those with polymers with excluded volume intera…
A method to obtain (approximate) analytical expressions for the radial distribution functions in a multicomponent mixture of additive hard spheres that was recently introduced is used to obtain the direct correlation functions and bridge functions in these systems. This method, which yields results practically equivalent to the Generalized Mean Spherical Approximation and includes thermodynamic consistency, is an alternative to the usual integral equation approaches and requires as input only the contact values of the radial distribution functions and the isothermal compressibility. Calculatio…
We present a multilevel Monte Carlo simulation method for analysing multi-scale physical systems via a hierarchy of coarse-grained representations, to obtain numerically-exact results, at the most detailed level. We apply the method to a mixture of size-asymmetric hard spheres, in the grand canonical ensemble. A three-level version of the method is compared with a previously-studied two-level version. The extra level interpolates between the full mixture and a coarse-grained description where only the large particles are present -- this is achieved by restricting the small particles to regions…
Using a geometry-based fundamental measure density functional theory, we calculate bulk fluid phase diagrams of colloidal mixtures of vanishingly thin hard circular platelets and hard spheres. We find isotropic-nematic phase separation with strong broadening of the biphasic region upon increasing the pressure. In mixtures with large size ratio of platelet and sphere diameter, there is also demixing between two nematic phases with differing platelet concentrations. We formulate a fundamental-measure density functional for mixtures of colloidal platelets and freely overlapping spheres, which rep…
One versatile route to the creation of two-dimensional crystal structures on the nanometer to micrometer scale is the self-assembly of colloidal particles at an interface. Here, we explore the crystal phases that can be expected from the self-assembly of mixtures of spherical particles of two different sizes, which we map to (additive or non-additive) hard-disk mixtures. We map out the infinite-pressure phase diagram for these mixtures, using Floppy Box Monte Carlo simulations to systematically sample candidate crystal structures with up to 12 disks in the unit cell. As a function of the size …
We use hard-sphere generalized hydrodynamic equations to discuss the extended hydrodynamic modes of a binary mixture. The theory presented here is analytic and it provides us with a simple description of the collective excitations of a dense binary mixture at molecular length scales. The behavior we predict is in qualitative agreement with molecular-dynamics results for soft-sphere mixtures. This study provides some insight into the role of compositional disorder in forming glassy configurations.
The binodals and the non-ergodicity lines of a binary mixture of hard sphere-like particles with large size ratio are computed for studying the interplay between dynamic arrest and phase separation in depletion-driven colloidal mixtures. Contrarily to the case of hard core plus short range effective attraction, physical gellation without competition with the fluid-phase separation can occur in such mixtures. This behavior due to the oscillations in the depletion potential should concern all simple mixtures with non-ideal depletant, justifying further studies of their dynamic properties.
We study the theoretical phase behavior of an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres, of which the smaller component is monodisperse and the larger component is polydisperse. The interactions are modeled in terms of the second virial coefficient and can be additive hard sphere (HS) or non-additive hard sphere (NAHS) interactions. The polydisperse component is subdivided into two sub-components and has an average size ten or three times the size of the monodisperse component. We give the set of equations that defines the phase diagram for mixtures with more than two components in a solvent. …
We study the influence of particle size asymmetry on structural evolution of randomly jammed binary sphere mixtures with varying large-sphere/small-sphere composition. Simulations of jammed packings are used to assess the transition from large-sphere dominant to small-sphere dominant mixtures. For weakly asymmetric particle sizes, packing properties evolve smoothly, but not monotonically, with increasing small sphere composition, $f$. Our simulations reveal that at high values of ratio $α$ of large to small sphere radii, ($α\geq α_c \approx 5.75$) evolution of structural properties such as pac…
We report a molecular dynamics study of crystallization in highly asymmetric binary hard-sphere mixtures, in which the large spheres can form a crystal phase while the small ones remain disordered during the crystallization process of the large spheres. By taking advantage of assisting crystal nucleation with a patterned substrate, direct evidence is presented that there is a close link between the diffusive redistribution of the small spheres and the crystal formation of the large spheres. Although the addition of a second component with large size disparity will not alter the crystal structu…
We derive an exact, analytic expression for the fourth virial coefficient of a system of polydisperse spheres under the constraint that the smallest sphere has a radius smaller than a given function of the radii of the three remaining particles.
We study various manifestations of structural crossover in the properties of a binary mixture of hard-spheres. For homogeneous mixtures that are sufficiently asymmetric, there is a crossover line in the phase diagram such that for thermodynamic states that lie on one side, the decay of the three bulk pair correlation functions is oscillatory with a common wavelength approximately equal to the diameter of the smaller spheres, and for states on the other side, the common wavelength is approximately the diameter of the bigger spheres. Using density functional theory we show that structural crosso…
Granular gaseous mixtures under rapid flow conditions are usually modeled by a multicomponent system of smooth inelastic hard spheres with constant coefficients of normal restitution. In the low density regime an adequate framework is provided by the set of coupled inelastic Boltzmann equations. Due to the intricacy of the inelastic Boltzmann collision operator, in this paper we propose a simpler model of elastic hard spheres subject to the action of an effective drag force, which mimics the effect of dissipation present in the original granular gas. The Navier--Stokes transport coefficients f…
Explicit analytical expressions for Helmholtz free energy, chemical potential, entropy and pressure of the multi-component dimerizing Yukawa hard-sphere fluid are presented. These expressions are written in terms of the Blum's scaling parameter $Γ$, which follows from the solution of the associative mean spherical approximation (AMSA) for the model with factorized Yukawa coefficients. In this case solution of the AMSA reduces to the solution of only one nonlinear algebraic equation for $Γ$. This feature enables the theory to be used in the description of the thermodynamical properties of assoc…
Population annealing is a sequential Monte Carlo scheme well-suited to simulating equilibrium states of systems with rough free energy landscapes. Here we use population annealing to study a binary mixture of hard spheres. Population annealing is a parallel version of simulated annealing with an extra resampling step that ensures that a population of replicas of the system represents the equilibrium ensemble at every packing fraction in an annealing schedule. The algorithm and its equilibration properties are described and results are presented for a glass-forming fluid composed of a 50/50 mix…
The demixing transition of a binary fluid mixture of additive hard spheres is analyzed for different size asymmetries by starting from the exact low-density expansion of the pressure. Already within the second virial approximation the fluid separates into two phases of different composition with a lower consolute critical point. By successively incorporating the third, fourth, and fifth virial coefficients, the critical consolute point moves to higher values of the pressure and to lower values of the partial number fraction of the large spheres. When the exact low-density expansion of the pres…
We use discontinuous molecular dynamics and grand-canonical transition-matrix Monte Carlo simulations to explore how confinement between parallel hard walls modifies the relationships between packing fraction, self-diffusivity, partial molar excess entropy, and total excess entropy for binary hard-sphere mixtures. To accomplish this, we introduce an efficient algorithm to calculate partial molar excess entropies from the transition-matrix Monte Carlo simulation data. We find that the species-dependent self-diffusivities of confined fluids are very similar to those of the bulk mixture if compar…
The scaled particle theory is developed for the description of thermodynamical properties of a mixture of hard spheres and hard spherocylinders. Analytical expressions for free energy, pressure and chemical potentials are derived. From the minimization of free energy, a nonlinear integral equation for the orientational singlet distribution function is formulated. An isotropic-nematic phase transition in this mixture is investigated from the bifurcation analysis of this equation. It is shown that with an increase of concentration of hard spheres, the total packing fraction of a mixture on phase…
We present a versatile density functional approach (DFT) for calculating the depletion potential in general fluid mixtures. In contrast to brute force DFT, our approach requires only the equilibrium density profile of the small particles {\em before} the big (test) particle is inserted. For a big particle near a planar wall or a cylinder or another fixed big particle the relevant density profiles are functions of a single variable, which avoids the numerical complications inherent in brute force DFT. We implement our approach for additive hard-sphere mixtures. By investigating the depletion po…
An analytic derivation of the spinodal of a polydisperse mixture is presented. It holds for fluids whose excess free energy can be accurately described by a function of a few moments of the size distribution. It is shown that one such mixture of hard spheres in the Percus-Yevick approximation never demixes, despite its size distribution. In the Boublik-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland approximation, though, it demixes for a sufficiently wide log-normal size distribution. The importance of this result is twofold: first, this distribution is unimodal, and yet it phase separates; and second, log…
The stability of liquid crystal phases in presence of small amount of non-mesogenic impurities is of general interest for a large spectrum of technological applications and in the theories of binary mixtures. Starting from the known phase diagram of the hard ellipsoids systems, we propose a simple model and method to explore the stability of the nematic phase in presence of small impurities represented by hard spheres. The study is performed in the isobaric ensemble with Monte Carlo simulations.
