One versatile route to the creation of two-dimensional crystal structures on the nanometer to micrometer scale is the self-assembly of colloidal particles at an interface. Here, we explore the crystal phases that can be expected from the self-assembly of mixtures of spherical particles of two different sizes, which we map to (additive or non-additive) hard-disk mixtures. We map out the infinite-pressure phase diagram for these mixtures, using Floppy Box Monte Carlo simulations to systematically sample candidate crystal structures with up to 12 disks in the unit cell. As a function of the size ratio and number ratio of the two species of particles, we find a rich variety of periodic crystal structures. Additionally, we identify random tiling regions to predict random tiling quasicrystal stability ranges. Increasing non-additivity both gives rise to additional crystal phases and broadens the stability regime for crystal structures involving a large number of large-small contacts, including random tilings. Our results provide useful guidelines for controlling the self-assembly of colloidal particles at interfaces.
We study 2-dimensional binary mixtures of parallel squares as well as of disks. A recent cluster algorithm allows us to establish an entropic demixing transition between a homogeneously packed fluid phase and a demixed phase of a practically close-packed aggregate of large squares surrounded by a fluid of small squares.
Using density functionals from fundamental measure theory, phase diagrams and crystal-fluid surface tensions in additive and nonadditive (Asakura-Oosawa model) two-dimensional hard disk mixtures are determined for the whole range of size ratios $q$ between disks, assuming random disorder in the crystal phase. The fluid-crystal transitions are first-order due to the assumption of a periodic unit cell in the density functional calculations. Qualitatively, the shape of the phase diagrams is similar to the case of three-dimensional hard sphere mixtures. For the nonadditive case, a broadening of th…
We show that the formal procedure of integrating out the degrees of freedom of the small spheres in a binary hard-sphere mixture works equally well for non-additive as it does for additive mixtures. For highly asymmetric mixtures (small size ratios) the resulting effective Hamiltonian of the one-component fluid of big spheres, which consists of an infinite number of many-body interactions, should be accurately approximated by truncating after the term describing the effective pair interaction. Using a density functional treatment developed originally for additive hard-sphere mixtures we determ…
Based on fundamental measure theory, a Helmholtz free energy density functional for three-component mixtures of hard spheres with general, non-additive interaction distances is constructed. The functional constitutes a generalization of the previously given theory for binary non-additive mixtures. The diagrammatic structure of the spatial integrals in both functionals is of star-like (or tree-like) topology. The ternary diagrams possess a higher degree of complexity than the binary diagrams. Results for partial pair correlation functions, obtained via the Ornstein-Zernike route from the second…
We calculate for the first time the full phase-diagram of an asymmetric non-additive hard-sphere mixture. The non-additivity strongly affects the crystallization and the fluid-fluid phase-separation. The global topology of the phase-diagram is controlled by an effective size-ratio y_{eff}, while the fluid-solid coexistence scales with the depth of the effective potential well.
The results of Monte Carlo simulation of adsorption and wetting behaviour of a highly non-additive symmetric mixture at selective walls is discussed. We have concentrated on the interplay between the surface induced demixing in the adsorbed films and the properties of the bulk mixture, which exhibits a closed immiscibility loop. It has been shown that the wetting behaviour depends on the absolute values of the parameters determining the strengths of interaction between the mixture components and the surface, as well as on their difference. In general, an increase of the difference between the …
In this paper, we present a cluster algorithm for the numerical simulations of non-additive hard-core mixtures. This algorithm allows one to simulate and equilibrate systems with a number of particles two orders of magnitude larger than previous simulations. The phase separation for symmetric binary mixtures is studied for different non-additvities as well as for the Widom-Rowlinson model (B. Widom and J. S. Rowlinson, J. Chem. Phys. 52, 1670 (1970)) in two and three dimensions. The critical densities are determined from finite size scaling. The critical exponents for all the non-additivities …
Using fundamental-measure density functional theory we investigate entropic wetting in an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres with positive non-additivity. We consider a general planar hard wall, where preferential adsorption is induced by a difference in closest approach of the different species and the wall. Close to bulk fluid-fluid coexistence the phase rich in the minority component adsorbs either through a series of first-order layering transitions, where an increasing number of liquid layers adsorbs sequentially, or via a critical wetting transition, where a thick film grows conti…
Using a fundamental measure density functional theory we investigate both bulk and inhomogeneous systems of the binary non-additive hard sphere model. For sufficiently large (positive) non-additivity the mixture phase separates into two fluid phases with different compositions. We calculate bulk fluid-fluid coexistence curves for a range of size ratios and non-additivity parameters and find that they compare well to simulation results from the literature. Using the Ornstein-Zernike equation, we investigate the asymptotic, r->infinity, decay of the partial pair correlation functions, g_ij(r). A…
The problem of demixing in a binary fluid mixture of highly asymmetric additive hard spheres is revisited. A comparison is presented between the results derived previously using truncated virial expansions for three finite size ratios with those that one obtains with the same approach in the extreme case in which one of the components consists of point particles. Since this latter system is known not to exhibit fluid-fluid segregation, the similarity observed for the behavior of the critical constants arising in the truncated series in all instances, while not being conclusive, may cast seriou…
We provide an exact mapping between the density functional of a binary mixture and that of the effective one-component fluid in the limit of infinite asymmetry. The fluid of parallel hard cubes is thus mapped onto that of parallel adhesive hard cubes. Its phase behaviour reveals that demixing of a very asymmetric mixture can only occur between a solvent-rich fluid and a permeated large particle solid or between two large particle solids with different packing fractions. Comparing with hard spheres mixtures we conclude that the phase behaviour of very asymmetric hard-particle mixtures can be de…
Monte Carlo simulations on the structural properties of ternary fluid mixtures of additive hard spheres are reported. The results are compared with those obtained from a recent analytical approximation [S. B. Yuste, A. Santos, and M. Lopez de Haro, J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3683 (1998)] to the radial distribution functions of hard-sphere mixtures and with the results derived from the solution of the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation with both the Martynov-Sarkisov and the Percus-Yevick closures. Very good agreement between the results of the first two approaches and simulation is observed, with a n…
An equation of state for a multicomponent mixture of non-additive hard spheres in $d$ dimensions is proposed. It yields a rather simple density dependence and constitutes a natural extension of the equation of state for additive hard spheres proposed by us [A. Santos, S. B. Yuste, and M. López de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)]. The proposal relies on the known exact second and third virial coefficients and requires as input the compressibility factor of the one-component system. A comparison is carried out both to another recent theoretical proposal based on a similar philosophy and to the ava…
To probe the effects of hydrogel particle additives on the water-accessible pore structure of sandy soils, we introduce a custom pressure plate method in which the volume of water expelled from a wet granular packing is measured as a function of applied pressure. Using a capillary bundle model, we show that the differential change in retained water per pressure increment is directly related to the cumulative cross-sectional area distribution $f(r)$ of the water-accessible pores with radii less than $r$. This is validated by measurements of water expelled from a model sandy soil composed of 2 m…
Relaxation of the additivity condition on the interaction length between unlike species in a binary mixture of soft disks opens up a rich variety of structures in both crystal and amorphous states with an associated diverse range of relaxation dynamics. We report on MD simulation studies of binary soft disks with negative deviations from additivity that include evidence of accumulation of crystal-like structures in metastable liquids prior to crystallization and the occurrence of a liquid to random-tiling transition.
The fourth virial coefficient of additive hard-sphere mixtures, as predicted by the Percus-Yevick (PY) and hypernetted-chain (HNC) theories, is derived via the compressibility, virial, and chemical-potential routes, the outcomes being compared with exact results. Except in the case of the HNC compressibility route, the other five expressions exhibit a common structure involving the first three moments of the size distribution. In both theories the chemical-potential route is slightly better than the virial one and the best behavior is generally presented by the compressibility route. Moreover,…
A detailed analysis of two different theoretical equations of state for a binary mixture of additive hard disks [C. Barrio and J. R. Solana, Phys. Rev. E 63, 011201 (2001); A. Santos, S. B. Yuste and M. Lopez de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)], including their comparison with Monte Carlo results, is carried out. It is found that both proposals, which require the equation of state of the single component system as input, lead to comparable accuracy when the same input is used in both, but the one advocated by Santos et al. is simpler and complies with the exact limit in which the small disks are…
We study the theoretical phase behavior of an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres, of which the smaller component is monodisperse and the larger component is polydisperse. The interactions are modelled in terms of the second virial coefficient and are assumed to be additive hard sphere interactions. The polydisperse component is subdivided into sub-components and has an average size ten times the size of the monodisperse component. We give the set of equations that defines the phase diagram for mixtures with more than two components in a solvent. We calculate the theoretical liquid-liqui…
The structural properties of additive binary hard-sphere mixtures are addressed as a follow-up of a previous paper [S. Pieprzyk et al., Phys. Rev. E 101, 012117 (2020)]. The so-called rational-function approximation method and an approach combining accurate molecular dynamics simulation data, the pole structure representation of the total correlation functions, and the Ornstein-Zernike equation are considered. The density, composition, and size-ratio dependencies of the leading poles of the Fourier transforms of the total correlation functions $h_{ij} (r)$ of such mixtures are presented, those…
An approach to obtain the structural properties of additive binary hard-sphere mixtures is presented. Such an approach, which is a nontrivial generalization of the one recently used for monocomponent hard-sphere fluids [S. Pieprzyk, A. C. Brańka, and D. M. Heyes, Phys. Rev. E 95, 062104 (2017)], combines accurate molecular-dynamics simulation data, the pole structure representation of the total correlation functions, and the Ornstein-Zernike equation. A comparison of the direct correlation functions obtained with the present scheme with those derived from theoretical results stemming from the …
A method to obtain (approximate) analytical expressions for the radial distribution functions in a multicomponent mixture of additive hard spheres that was recently introduced is used to obtain the direct correlation functions and bridge functions in these systems. This method, which yields results practically equivalent to the Generalized Mean Spherical Approximation and includes thermodynamic consistency, is an alternative to the usual integral equation approaches and requires as input only the contact values of the radial distribution functions and the isothermal compressibility. Calculatio…
Adding plasticizers is a well-known procedure to reduce the glass transition temperature in polymers. It has been recently shown that this effect shows a non-monotonic dependence on the size of additive molecules [The Journal of Chemical Physics 150 (2019) 024903]. In this work, we demonstrate that, as the size of the additive molecules is changed at fixed concentration, multiple extrema emerge in the dependence of the system's relaxation time on the size ratio. The effect occurs on all relevant length scales including single monomer dynamics, decay of Rouse modes and relaxation of the chain's…
On the temperature, pressure and composition effects in the properties of water-methanol mixtures. I. Density, excess mixing volume and enthalpy, and self-diffusion coefficients from molecular dynamics simulations
We study and predict the interfacial tension, solubility parameters and Flory-Huggins parameters of binary mixtures as functions of pressure and temperature, using multiscale numerical simulation. A mesoscopic approach is proposed for simulating the pressure dependence of the interfacial tension for binary mixtures, at different temperatures, using classical Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD). The thermodynamic properties of real systems are reproduced via the parametrization of the repulsive interaction parameters as functions of pressure and temperature via Molecular Dynamics simulations. U…
We study the theoretical phase behavior of an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres, of which the smaller component is monodisperse and the larger component is polydisperse. The interactions are modeled in terms of the second virial coefficient and can be additive hard sphere (HS) or non-additive hard sphere (NAHS) interactions. The polydisperse component is subdivided into two sub-components and has an average size ten or three times the size of the monodisperse component. We give the set of equations that defines the phase diagram for mixtures with more than two components in a solvent. …
Dielectric measurements of the alpha-relaxation time were carried out on a mixture of ortho-terphenyl (OTP) with ortho-phenylphenol (OPP), over a range of temperatures at two pressures, 0.1 and 28.8 MPa. These are the same conditions for which heat capacity, thermal expansivity, and compressibility measurements were reported by Takahara et al. [S. Takahara, M. Ishikawa, O. Yamamuro, and T. Matsuo, Journal of Physical Chemistry B 103 (16), 3288 (1999).] for the same mixture. From the combined dynamic and thermodynamic data, we determine that density and temperature govern to an equivalent degre…
An analysis of the direct correlation functions $c_{ij} (r)$ of binary additive hard-sphere mixtures of diameters $σ_s$ and $σ_b$ (where the subscripts $s$ and $b$ refer to the "small" and "big" spheres, respectively), as obtained with the rational-function approximation method and the WM scheme introduced in previous work [S.\ Pieprzyk \emph{et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ E {\bf 101}, 012117 (2020)], is performed. The results indicate that the functions $c_{ss}(r<σ_s)$ and $c_{bb}(r<σ_b)$ in both approaches are monotonic and can be well represented by a low-order polynomial, while the function $c_{sb}…
The contact values $g_{ij}(σ_{ij})$ of the radial distribution functions of a $d$-dimensional mixture of (additive) hard spheres are considered. A `universality' assumption is put forward, according to which $g_{ij}(σ_{ij})=G(η, z_{ij})$, where $G$ is a common function for all the mixtures of the same dimensionality, regardless of the number of components, $η$ is the packing fraction of the mixture, and $z_{ij}$ is a dimensionless parameter that depends on the size distribution and the diameters of spheres $i$ and $j$. For $d=3$, this universality assumption holds for the contact values of the…
We analyze the critical gas-liquid phase behavior of arbitrary fluid mixtures in their coexistence region. We focus on the setting relevant for polydisperse colloids, where the overall density and composition of the system are being controlled, in addition to temperature. Our analysis uses the complete scaling formalism and thus includes pressure mixing effects in the mapping from thermodynamic fields to the effective fields of 3D Ising criticality. Because of fractionation, where mixture components are distributed unevenly across coexisting phases, the critical behavior is remarkably rich. We…
By employing computer simulations for a model binary mixture, we show that a reentrant glass transition upon adding a second component only occurs if the ratio $α$ of the short-time mobilities between the glass-forming component and the additive is sufficiently small. For $α\approx 1$, there is no reentrant glass, even if the size asymmetry between the two components is large, in accordance with two-component mode coupling theory. For $α\ll 1$, on the other hand, the reentrant glass is observed and reproduced only by an effective one-component mode coupling theory.
We consider a new class of model systems to study systematically the role of molecular shape in the transport properties of dense liquids. Our model is a liquid binary mixture where both the molecules are non-spherical and characterized by a collection of parameters. Although in the real world most of the molecules are non-spherical, only a limited number of theoretical studies exist on the effects of molecular shapes and hardly any have addressed the validity of the hydrodynamic predictions of rotational and translational diffusion of these shapes in liquids. In this work, we study a model li…
Extension of Kirkwood-Buff theory: Partial enthalpies, fluctuations of energy density, temperature, and pressure, and solute-induced effects in a mixture solvent
We explore structural correlations of strongly asymmetric mixtures of binary charged colloids within the primitive model of electrolytes considering large charge and size ratios of 10 and higher. Using computer simulations with explicit microions, we obtain the partial pair correlation functions between the like-charged colloidal macroions. Interestingly the big-small correlation peak amplitude is smaller than that of the big-big and small-small macroion correlation peaks, which is unfamiliar for additive repulsive interactions. Extracting optimal effective microion-averaged pair interactions …
The fundamental measure density functional theory for hard spheres is generalized to binary mixtures of arbitrary positive and moderate negative non-additivity between unlike components. In bulk the theory predicts fluid-fluid phase separation into phases with different chemical compositions. The location of the accompanying critical point agrees well with previous results from simulations over a broad range of non-additivities and both for symmetric and highly asymmetric size ratios. Results for partial pair correlation functions show good agreement with simulation data.
A recently proposed rational-function approximation [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{84}, 041201 (2011)] for the structural properties of nonadditive hard spheres is applied to evaluate analytically (in Laplace space) the local density profiles of multicomponent nonadditive hard-sphere mixtures near a planar nonadditive hard wall. The theory is assessed by comparison with $NVT$ Monte Carlo simulations of binary mixtures with a size ratio 1:3 in three possible scenarios: a mixture with either positive or negative nonadditivity near an additive wall, an additive mixture with a nonadditive wall, and a nonad…
We examine the force between two charged surfaces immersed in aqueous mixtures having a coexistence curve. For a homogeneous water-poor phase, as the distance between the surfaces is decreased, a water-rich phase condenses at a distance $D_t$ in the range 1-100nm. At this distance the osmotic pressure can become negative leading to a long-range attraction between the surfaces. The osmotic pressure vanishes at a distance $D_e<D_t$, representing a very deep metastable or globally stable energetic state. We give analytical and numerical results for $D_t$ and $D_e$ on the Poisson-Boltzmann level.
The phase diagram of a binary fluid mixture of highly asymmetric additive hard spheres is investigated. Demixing is analyzed from the exact low-density expansions of the thermodynamic properties of the mixture and compared with the fluid-fluid separation based on the effective one-component description. Differences in the results obtained from both approaches, which have been claimed to be equivalent, are pointed out and their possible origin is discussed. It is argued that to deal with these differences new theoretical approximations should be devised.
We calculate the network fluid regime and phase diagrams of binary mixtures of patchy colloids, using Wertheim's first order perturbation theory and a generalization of Flory-Stockmayer's theory of polymerization. The colloids are modelled as hard spheres with the same diameter and surface patches of the same type, $A$. The only difference between species is the number of their patches -or functionality-, $f_A^{(1)}$ and $f_A^{(2)}$ (with $f_A^{(2)}>f_A^{(1)}$). We have found that the difference in functionality is the key factor controlling the behaviour of the mixture in the network (percola…
First-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations are performed on 6 and 12% Na in dense liquid N. A detailed description of structural and electronic properties leading to an understanding of the effect of Na-doping on the polymerization phase transition of N is presented. Compression of the mixtures from 5 to 90 GPa shows three distinct regions of characteristic local order separated by pressures near 30 and 65 GPa. Computation of Gibbs free energies of mixing shows that these mixtures are thermodynamically stable beyond 20 and 15 GPa for 6 and 12 % Na respectively.
We construct a non-perturbative fully analytical approximation for the thermodynamics and the structure of nonadditive hard-sphere fluid mixtures. The method essentially lies in a heuristic extension of the Percus-Yevick solution for additive hard spheres. Extensive comparison with Monte Carlo simulation data shows a generally good agreement, especially in the case of like-like radial distribution functions.
The demixing transition of a binary fluid mixture of additive hard spheres is analyzed for different size asymmetries by starting from the exact low-density expansion of the pressure. Already within the second virial approximation the fluid separates into two phases of different composition with a lower consolute critical point. By successively incorporating the third, fourth, and fifth virial coefficients, the critical consolute point moves to higher values of the pressure and to lower values of the partial number fraction of the large spheres. When the exact low-density expansion of the pres…
We investigate volume phase transition in gels immersed in mixture solvents, on the basis of a three-component Flory-Rehner theory. When the selectivity of the minority solvent component to the polymer network is strong, the gel tends to shrink with an increasing concentration of the additive, regardless of whether it is good or poor. This behavior originates from the difference of the additive concentration between inside and outside the gel. We also found the gap of the gel volume at the transition point can be controlled by adding the strongly selective solutes. By dissolving a strongly poo…
We construct a thermodynamic model for theoretical calculation of the boiling process of multicomponent mixtures of hydrocarbons (e.g., crude oil). The model governs kinetics of the mixture composition in the course of the distillation process along with the boiling temperature increase. The model heavily relies on the theory of dilute solutions of gases in liquids. Importantly, our results are applicable for modelling the process under elevated pressure (while the empiric models for oil cracking are not scalable to the case of extreme pressure), such as in an oil field heated by lava intrusio…
A universality ansatz for the contact values of a multicomponent mixture of additive hard spheres is used to propose new formulae for the case of disparate-size binary mixtures. A comparison with simulation data and with a recent proposal by Alawneh and Henderson for binary mixtures shows reasonably good agreement with the predictions for the contact values of the large-large radial distribution functions. A discussion on the usefulness and limitations of the new proposals is also presented.
In trajectory space, dynamical heterogeneities in glass-forming liquids correspond to the emergence of a dynamical phase transition between an active phase poor in local structure and an inactive phase which is rich in local structure. We support this scenario with the study of a model additive mixture of Lennard-Jones particles, quantifying how the choice of the relevant structural and dynamical observable affects the transition in trajectory space. We find that the low mobility, structure-rich phase is dominated by icosahedral order. Applying a nonequilibrium rheological protocol, we connect…
Using the Fundamental-Measure Density Functional Theory, we have studied theoretically the phase behavior of extremely confined mixtures of parallel hard squares in slit geometry. The pore width is chosen such that configurations consisting of two consecutive big squares, or three small squares, in the transverse direction, perpendicular to the walls, are forbidden. We analyzed two different mixtures with edge-lengths of species selected so as to allow or forbid one big plus one small square to fit into the channel. For the first mixture we obtained first-order transitions between symmetric an…
We report molecular dynamics results for the contact values of the radial distribution functions of binary additive mixtures of hard disks. The simulation data are compared with theoretical predictions from expressions proposed by Jenkins and Mancini [J. Appl. Mech. \textbf{54}, 27 (1987)] and Santos et al. [J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{117}, 5785 (2002)]. Both theories agree quantitatively within a very small margin, which renders the former still a very useful and simple tool to work with. The latter (higher-order and self-consistent) theory provides a small qualitative correction for low densitie…
