Different theoretical approaches for the thermodynamic properties and the equation of state for multicomponent mixtures of nonadditive hard spheres in $d$ dimensions are presented in a unified way. These include the theory by Hamad, our previous formulation, the original MIX1 theory, a recently proposed modified MIX1 theory, as well as a nonlinear extension of the MIX1 theory proposed in this paper. Explicit expressions for the compressibility factor, Helmholtz free energy, and second, third, and fourth virial coefficients are provided. A comparison is carried out with recent Monte Carlo data for the virial coefficients of asymmetric mixtures and with available simulation data for the compressibility factor, the critical consolute point, and the liquid-liquid coexistence curves. The merits and limitations of each theory are pointed out.
The fourth virial coefficient of asymmetric nonadditive binary mixtures of hard disks is computed with a standard Monte Carlo method. Wide ranges of size ratio ($0.05\leq q\leq 0.95$) and nonadditivity ($-0.5\leq Δ\leq 0.5$) are covered. A comparison is made between the numerical results and those that follow from some theoretical developments. The possible use of these data in the derivation of new equations of state for these mixtures is illustrated by considering a rescaled virial expansion truncated to fourth order. The numerical results obtained using this equation of state are compared w…
Values of the fifth virial coefficient, compressibility factors, and fluid-fluid coexistence curves of binary asymmetric nonadditive mixtures of hard disks are reported. The former correspond to a wide range of size ratios and positive nonadditivities and have been obtained through a standard Monte Carlo method for the computation of the corresponding cluster integrals. The compressibility factors as functions of density, derived from canonical Monte Carlo simulations, have been obtained for two values of the size ratio ($q=0.4$ and $q=0.5$), a value of the nonadditivity parameter $Δ=0.3$), an…
A recently proposed rational-function approximation [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{84}, 041201 (2011)] for the structural properties of nonadditive hard spheres is applied to evaluate analytically (in Laplace space) the local density profiles of multicomponent nonadditive hard-sphere mixtures near a planar nonadditive hard wall. The theory is assessed by comparison with $NVT$ Monte Carlo simulations of binary mixtures with a size ratio 1:3 in three possible scenarios: a mixture with either positive or negative nonadditivity near an additive wall, an additive mixture with a nonadditive wall, and a nonad…
We construct a non-perturbative fully analytical approximation for the thermodynamics and the structure of nonadditive hard-sphere fluid mixtures. The method essentially lies in a heuristic extension of the Percus-Yevick solution for additive hard spheres. Extensive comparison with Monte Carlo simulation data shows a generally good agreement, especially in the case of like-like radial distribution functions.
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{76}, 031202 (2007)], Schmidt has proposed a Fundamental Measure Density Functional Theory for one-dimensional nonadditive hard-rod fluid mixtures and has compared its predictions for the bulk structural properties with Monte Carlo simulations. The aim of this Brief Report is to recall that the problem admits an exact solution in the bulk, which is briefly summarized in a self-contained way.
We compute the fourth virial coefficient of a binary nonadditive hard-sphere mixture over a wide range of deviations from diameter additivity and size ratios. Hinging on this knowledge, we build up a $y$ expansion [B. Barboy and W. N. Gelbart, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 71}, 3053 (1979)] in order to trace the fluid-fluid coexistence lines which we then compare with the available Gibbs-ensemble Monte Carlo data and with the estimates obtained through two refined integral-equation theories of the fluid state. We find that in a regime of moderately negative nonadditivity and largely asymmetric diameters…

Using density functionals from fundamental measure theory, phase diagrams and crystal-fluid surface tensions in additive and nonadditive (Asakura-Oosawa model) two-dimensional hard disk mixtures are determined for the whole range of size ratios $q$ between disks, assuming random disorder in the crystal phase. The fluid-crystal transitions are first-order due to the assumption of a periodic unit cell in the density functional calculations. Qualitatively, the shape of the phase diagrams is similar to the case of three-dimensional hard sphere mixtures. For the nonadditive case, a broadening of th…
Within a second virial theory, we study bulk phase diagrams as well as the free planar isotropic-nematic interface of binary mixtures of nonadditive thin and thick hard rods. For species of the same type the excluded volume is determined only by the dimensions of the particles, whereas for dissimilar ones it is taken to be larger or smaller than that, giving rise to a nonadditivity that can be positive or negative. We argue that such a nonadditivity can result from modelling of soft interactions as effective hard-core interactions. The nonadditivity enhances or reduces the fractionation at iso…
The mutual entropic depletion force felt by two solute "big" hard spheres immersed in a binary mixture solvent of nonadditive "small" hard spheres is calculated as a function of the surface-to-surface distance by means of canonical Monte Carlo simulations and through a recently proposed rational-function approximation [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{84}, 041201 (2011)]. Four representative scenarios are investigated: symmetric solute particles and the limit where one of the two solute spheres becomes a planar hard wall, in both cases with symmetric and asymmetric solvents. In all cases, the influence on…
We consider a mixture of small and big classical particles in arbitrary spatial dimensions interacting via hard-body potentials with non-additive excluded-volume interactions. In particular, we focus on variants of the Asakura--Oosawa (AO) model where the interaction between the small particles is neglected but the big-small and big-big interactions are present and can be condensed into an effective depletion interaction among the big particles alone. The original AO model involves hard spherical particles in three spatial dimensions with interaction diameters $σ_\text{pp}=0$, $σ_\text{cc}>0$ …
The fourth virial coefficient of additive hard-sphere mixtures, as predicted by the Percus-Yevick (PY) and hypernetted-chain (HNC) theories, is derived via the compressibility, virial, and chemical-potential routes, the outcomes being compared with exact results. Except in the case of the HNC compressibility route, the other five expressions exhibit a common structure involving the first three moments of the size distribution. In both theories the chemical-potential route is slightly better than the virial one and the best behavior is generally presented by the compressibility route. Moreover,…
The problem of demixing in a binary fluid mixture of highly asymmetric additive hard spheres is revisited. A comparison is presented between the results derived previously using truncated virial expansions for three finite size ratios with those that one obtains with the same approach in the extreme case in which one of the components consists of point particles. Since this latter system is known not to exhibit fluid-fluid segregation, the similarity observed for the behavior of the critical constants arising in the truncated series in all instances, while not being conclusive, may cast seriou…
We derive an exact, analytic expression for the fourth virial coefficient of a system of polydisperse spheres under the constraint that the smallest sphere has a radius smaller than a given function of the radii of the three remaining particles.
New proposals for the equation of state of four- and five-dimensional hard-hypersphere mixtures in terms of the equation of state of the corresponding monocomponent hard-hypersphere fluid are introduced. Such proposals (which are constructed in such a way so as to yield the exact third virial coefficient) extend, on the one hand, recent similar formulations for hard-disk and (three-dimensional) hard-sphere mixtures and, on the other hand, two of our previous proposals also linking the mixture equation of state and the one of the monocomponent fluid but unable to reproduce the exact third viria…
An equation of state for a multicomponent mixture of non-additive hard spheres in $d$ dimensions is proposed. It yields a rather simple density dependence and constitutes a natural extension of the equation of state for additive hard spheres proposed by us [A. Santos, S. B. Yuste, and M. López de Haro, Mol. Phys. 96, 1 (1999)]. The proposal relies on the known exact second and third virial coefficients and requires as input the compressibility factor of the one-component system. A comparison is carried out both to another recent theoretical proposal based on a similar philosophy and to the ava…
The demixing transition of a binary fluid mixture of additive hard spheres is analyzed for different size asymmetries by starting from the exact low-density expansion of the pressure. Already within the second virial approximation the fluid separates into two phases of different composition with a lower consolute critical point. By successively incorporating the third, fourth, and fifth virial coefficients, the critical consolute point moves to higher values of the pressure and to lower values of the partial number fraction of the large spheres. When the exact low-density expansion of the pres…
We present the extension of Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory to lattice models by constructing a density functional for d-dimensional mixtures of parallel hard hypercubes on a simple hypercubic lattice. The one-dimensional case is exactly solvable and two cases must be distinguished: all the species with the same lebgth parity (additive mixture), and arbitrary length parity (nonadditive mixture). At the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the latter case is considered. Based on the one-dimensional exact functional form, we propose the extension to higher dimensions by gene…
A simulation technique is described for quantifying the contribution of three-body interactions to the thermodynamical properties of coarse-grained representations of complex fluids. The method is based on comparing the third virial coefficient $B_3$ for a complex fluid with that of an approximate coarse-grained model described by a pair potential. To obtain $B_3$ we introduce a new technique which expresses its value in terms of the measured volume-dependent asymptote of a certain structural function. The strategy is applicable to both Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation. Its utilit…
A binary fluid mixture of non-additive hard spheres characterized by a size ratio $γ=σ_2/σ_1<1$ and a non-additivity parameter $Δ=2σ_{12}/(σ_1+σ_2)-1$ is considered in infinitely many dimensions. From the equation of state in the second virial approximation (which is exact in the limit $d\to\infty$) a demixing transition with a critical consolute point at a packing fraction scaling as $η\sim d 2^{-d}$ is found, even for slightly negative non-additivity, if $Δ>-{1/8}(\lnγ)^2$. Arguments concerning the stability of the demixing with respect to freezing are provided.
A general class of nonadditive sticky-hard-sphere binary mixtures, where small and large spheres represent the solvent and the solute, respectively, is introduced. The solute-solute and solvent-solvent interactions are of hard-sphere type, while the solute-solvent interactions are of sticky-hard-sphere type with tunable degrees of size nonadditivity and stickiness. Two particular and complementary limits are studied using analytical and semi-analytical tools. The first case is characterized by zero nonadditivity, lending itself to a Percus-Yevick approximate solution from which the impact of s…
The chemical potentials of multicomponent fluids are derived in terms of the pair correlation functions for arbitrary number of components, interaction potentials, and dimensionality. The formally exact result is particularized to hard-sphere mixtures with zero or positive nonadditivity. As a simple application, the chemical potentials of three-dimensional additive hard-sphere mixtures are derived from the Percus-Yevick theory and the associated equation of state is obtained. This Percus-Yevick chemical-route equation of state is shown to be more accurate than the virial equation of state. An …
We study the thermodynamic stability of fluid-fluid phase separation in binary nonadditive mixtures of hard-spheres for moderate size ratios. We are interested in elucidating the role played by small amounts of nonadditivity in determining the stability of fluid-fluid phase separation with respect to the fluid-solid phase transition. The demixing curves are built in the framework of the modified-hypernetted chain and of the Rogers-Young integral equation theories through the calculation of the Gibbs free energy. We also evaluate fluid-fluid phase equilibria within a first-order thermodynamic p…
Using a field-theoretic approach, we derive the first few coefficients of the exact low-density (``virial'') expansion of a binary mixture of positively and negatively charged hard spheres (two-component hard-core plasma, TCPHC). Our calculations are nonperturbative with respect to the diameters $d_+$ and $d_-$ and charge valences $q_+$ and $q_-$ of positive and negative ions. Consequently, our closed-form expressions for the coefficients of the free energy and activity can be used to treat dilute salt solutions, where typically $d_+ \sim d_-$ and $q_+ \sim q_-$, as well as colloidal suspensio…
We show that the formal procedure of integrating out the degrees of freedom of the small spheres in a binary hard-sphere mixture works equally well for non-additive as it does for additive mixtures. For highly asymmetric mixtures (small size ratios) the resulting effective Hamiltonian of the one-component fluid of big spheres, which consists of an infinite number of many-body interactions, should be accurately approximated by truncating after the term describing the effective pair interaction. Using a density functional treatment developed originally for additive hard-sphere mixtures we determ…
The depletion interactions between two colloidal plates or between two colloidal spheres, induced by interacting polymers in a good solvent, are calculated theoretically and by computer simulations. A simple analytical theory is shown to be quantitatively accurate for case of two plates. A related depletion potential is derived for two spheres; it also agrees very well with direct computer simulations. Theories based on ideal polymers show important deviations with increasing polymer concentration: They overestimate the range of the depletion potential between two plates or two spheres at all …
Bacteria typically have a few thousand different proteins. The number of proteins with a given charge is a roughly Gaussian function of charge - centred near zero, and with a width around ten (in units of the charge on the proton). We have used the charges on E. coli's proteins to estimate the changes in the second virial coefficients of all its proteins as the concentration of a 1:1 salt is increased. The second virial coefficient has dimensions of volume and we find that on average it decreases by about twice the average volume of a protein when the salt concentration is increased from 0.2 t…
We describe a general simulation scheme for assessing the thermodynamic consequences of neglecting many-body effects in coarse-grained models of complex fluids. The method exploits the fact that the asymptote of a simple-to-measure structural function provides direct estimates of virial coefficients. Comparing the virial coefficients of an atomistically detailed system with those of a coarse-grained version described by pair potentials, permits the role of many-body effects to be quantified. The approach is applied to two models: (i) a size-asymmetrical colloid-polymer mixture, and (ii) a solu…
We study the theoretical phase behavior of an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres, of which the smaller component is monodisperse and the larger component is polydisperse. The interactions are modelled in terms of the second virial coefficient and are assumed to be additive hard sphere interactions. The polydisperse component is subdivided into sub-components and has an average size ten times the size of the monodisperse component. We give the set of equations that defines the phase diagram for mixtures with more than two components in a solvent. We calculate the theoretical liquid-liqui…
The depletion potential between two hard spheres in a solvent of thin hard disclike platelets is investigated by using either the Derjaguin approximation or density functional theory. Particular attention is paid to the density dependence of the depletion potential. A second-order virial approximation is applied, which yields nearly exact results for the bulk properties of the hard-platelet fluid at densities two times smaller than the density of the isotropic fluid at isotropic-nematic phase coexistence. As the platelet density increases, the attractive primary minimum of the depletion potent…
We consider binary mixtures of soft repulsive spherical particles and calculate the depletion interaction between two big spheres mediated by the fluid of small spheres, using different theoretical and simulation methods. The validity of the theoretical approach, a virial expansion in terms of the density of the small spheres, is checked against simulation results. Attention is given to the approach toward the hard-sphere limit, and to the effect of density and temperature on the strength of the depletion potential. Our results indicate, surprisingly, that even a modest degree of softness in t…
We apply a recently proposed density functional for mixtures of parallel hard cylinders, based on Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory, to study the effect of length-polydispersity on the relative stability between the smectic and columnar liquid crystal phases. To this purpose we derive from this functional an expression for the direct correlation function and use it to perform a bifurcation analysis. We compare the results with those obtained with a second and a third virial approximation of this function. All three approximations lead to the same conclusion: there is a terminal polydispers…
We study the theoretical phase behavior of an asymmetric binary mixture of hard spheres, of which the smaller component is monodisperse and the larger component is polydisperse. The interactions are modeled in terms of the second virial coefficient and can be additive hard sphere (HS) or non-additive hard sphere (NAHS) interactions. The polydisperse component is subdivided into two sub-components and has an average size ten or three times the size of the monodisperse component. We give the set of equations that defines the phase diagram for mixtures with more than two components in a solvent. …
A geometry-based density functional theory is presented for mixtures of hard spheres, hard needles and hard platelets; both the needles and the platelets are taken to be of vanishing thickness. Geometrical weight functions that are characteristic for each species are given and it is shown how convolutions of pairs of weight functions recover each Mayer bond of the ternary mixture and hence ensure the correct second virial expansion of the excess free energy functional. The case of sphere-platelet overlap relies on the same approximation as does Rosenfeld's functional for strictly two-dimension…
The morphometric approach is a powerful ansatz for decomposing the chemical potential for a complex solute into purely geometrical terms. This method has proven accuracy in hard spheres, presenting an alternative to comparatively expensive (classical) density functional theory approaches. Despite this, fundamental questions remain over why it is accurate and how one might include higher-order terms to improve accuracy. We derive the morphometric approach as the exact resummation of terms in the virial series, providing further justification of the approach. The resulting theory is less accurat…
We report a detailed study, using state-of-the-art simulation and theoretical methods, of the depletion potential between a pair of big hard spheres immersed in a reservoir of much smaller hard spheres, the size disparity being measured by the ratio of diameters q=σ_s/σ_b. Small particles are treated grand canonically, their influence being parameterized in terms of their packing fraction in the reservoir, η_s^r. Two specialized Monte Carlo simulation schemes --the geometrical cluster algorithm, and staged particle insertion-- are deployed to obtain accurate depletion potentials for a number o…
Colloidal systems are often modelled as fluids of hard particles (possibly with an additional soft attraction, e.g. caused by polymers also contained in the suspension). in simulations of such systems, the virial theorem cannot be straightforwardly applied to obtain the components of the pressure tensor. In systems confined by walls, it is hence also not straightforward to extract the excess energy due to the wall (the "wall tension") from the pressure tensor anisotropy. A comparative evaluation of several methods to circumvent this problem is presented, using as examples fluids of hard sphere…
We explore models of hard-rod fluids with a finite number of allowed orientations, and construct their bulk phase diagrams within Onsager's second virial theory. For a one-component fluid, we show that the discretization of the orientations leads to the existence of an artificial (almost) perfectly aligned nematic phase, which coexists with the (physical) nematic phase if the number of orientations is sufficiently large, or with the isotropic phase if the number of orientations is small. Its appearance correlates with the accuracy of sampling the nematic orientation distribution within its typ…
We investigate the dependence of the stickiness parameters $t_{ij}=1/(12τ_{ij})$ -- where the $τ_{ij}$ are the conventional Baxter parameters -- on the solute diameters $σ_{i}$ and $σ_{j}$ in multicomponent sticky hard sphere (SHS) models for fluid mixtures of mesoscopic neutral particles. A variety of simple but realistic interaction potentials, utilized in the literature to model \textit{short-ranged attractions} present in real solutions of colloids or reverse micelles, is reviewed. We consider: i) van der Waals attractions, ii) hard-sphere-depletion forces, iii) polymer-coated colloids, iv…
The integral equations for the correlation functions of an inhomogeneous fluid mixture are derived using a functional Taylor expansion of the free energy around an inhomogeneous equilibrium distribution. The system of equations is closed by the introduction of a reference functional for the correlations beyond second order in the density difference from the equilibrium distribution. Explicit expressions are obtained for energies required to insert particles of the fluid mixture into the inhomogeneous system. The approach is illustrated by the determination of the equation of state of a simple,…
